Scout Scribbles – Johnson Concern for Liverpool

Glen Johnson’s ankle injury may be worse than first feared. Eden Hazard skips training for Belgium with an Achilles complaint. Jozy Altidore is passed fit after a recent hamstring problem, Rafael could be set to return soon for United, while Luis Suarez may have to make do with a role on the flank this season for Liverpool.

Johnson Ankle Worry

Liverpool issued an official injury update on Glen Johnson yesterday after the right-back pulled out of England duties. The Reds defender was subbed off towards the end of Sunday’s win over United with an ankle problem and the club revealed:

“After being examined by the club’s medical staff at Melwood, Johnson is required to rest his ankle this week. A further review will then take place to check stability and decide on further management. Therefore, Liverpool have not put a timeframe on Johnson’s return to fitness at this stage.”

The Scout Says: A spell on the sidelines for Johnson would undoubtedly be a bitter blow for Brendan Rodgers. The full-back has been an integral part of the defence that has registered three back-to-back clean sheets so far and with a kind upcoming schedule on the horizon, was set for increased investment. Fantasy managers could be afforded a real bargain, though – Andre Wisdom comes in at just 4.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and looks the obvious candidate to benefit if Johnson is indeed ruled out for any length of time. Martin Kelly, also at 4.4, is the other option available to Rodgers.

Hazard Concern for Belgium

Reports in The Mail suggest Eden Hazard has been forced out of training with Belgium due to an Achilles problem. The Chelsea winger has allegedly told his national team’s doctors he has been suffering with the problem for “two to three weeks” and has been ordered to rest ahead of Friday’s showdown with Scotland.

The Scout Says: With Belgium in a strong position to qualify for next year’s World Cup, it’s highly unlikely they will risk the wide man over the next week if the injury is any real worry. Certainly, any potential absence would have a major effect on Fantasy line-ups – while Jose Mourinho has a multitude of attacking midfielders to choose from, Hazard is the most popular midfielder in the FPL game and currently resides in over 24%. An injury update from the Belgium squad will be keenly awaited as his owners hope for a positive prognosis with 10 days still to go before domestic action resumes.

Altidore Hamstring Relief

Sunderland’s Jozy Altidore has been given the all-clear to resume training with the US national squad. The forward missed out on last Saturday’s defeat at Crystal Palace due to a hamstring injury and was expected to be sidelined for at least a couple of weeks but an MRI scan has shown there is no serious damage ahead of games against Costa Rica and Mexico.

The Scout Says: This will be welcome news for Paolo Di Canio after the weekend loss against the Eagles. Having sold Stephane Sessegnon to West Brom, the Black Cats’ boss awaits news on Connor Wickham, who has withdrawn from England Under 21 duty, and with Steven Fletcher lacking fitness and new loan signing Fabio Borini also short of sharpness, Sunderland will be more reliant than ever on Altidore ahead of a run of games which sees them entertain Arsenal, Liverpool and United over the next four Gameweeks.

Rafael on the Mend

United’s Rafael has conveniently handed Fantasy managers a heads-up via his Instagram account by revealing he is set to return to training next week after missing the start of the season due to a hamstring injury.

The Scout Says: David Moyes will be relieved by the Brazilian’s speedy recovery after seeing Phil Jones forced off against Liverpool with an ankle injury. The former Blackburn man has deputised at right-back in the Brazilian’s absence but has since withdrawn from England duties with the problem – a possible return for Rafael would bring him firmly back onto Fantasy radars ahead of a run which see the champions face four home games (CPL, WBA, SOT, STO) and a trip to Sunderland in the next six.

Suarez Set for Wide Role

Reports in this morning’s Times suggest Luis Suarez will be shifted to the flank upon his return to action for Liverpool later this month. The Uruguayan is due back in time for the Gameweek 6 trip to Sunderland and with Brendan Rodgers bringing in Victor Moses on loan, Philippe Coutinho could be set for a move to “the hole” behind Daniel Sturridge as the Reds boss rolls out a 4-2-3-1:

The Scout Says: Sturridge’s form certainly has been worthy of the lone forward role. The former Chelsea man has not only notched in each of the first three Gameweeks, he has now found the net 10 times in the eight games Suarez has been suspended for – a clear indication of his goal-getting abilities. Such a scenario would not only cement Sturridge’s appeal for Fantasy managers, it would also re-ignite Coutinho’s potential – the Brazilian has failed to produce any returns in the opening three Gameweeks and has resultantly been sold on by over 106,000 FPL managers. Sturridge missed training for England yesterday with the thigh problem that had bothered him prior to the United match but his absence is thought to be precautionary.

Parr Boost for Palace

Crystal Palace left-back Jonathan Parr stepped up his recovery from an ankle ligament injury by turning out for the Eagles’ second-string side yesterday. The Norwegian, along with Paddy McCarthy, started the 2-1 defeat to Cardiff U21s before making way at the break in his first match since being sidelined towards the end of last season.

The Scout Says: Parr was a key player for Ian Holloway’s side last term and turned out 38 times in their promotion-winning campaign. His absence has afforded Dean Moxey the chance to deputise in the back-four but, once fully-fit, it’s likely that the Norway international will regain his starting berth – handing Fantasy managers another budget option, with a 4.0 price tag in the FPL game.

Ok, so now everyone is ignoring Soldado.

He scored 59 goals in 101 games for Valencia. That was without Lamela and Eriksen in his team

    That's +/- 20 goal in 38 FPL games(he has 2 in 3 already)

    You were warned.

He's 5th in my striker list. (Not including RVP).

Would take either a couple of injuries or a bad run of games for 2 other strikers before I got him in.

Although even if Sturridge gets injured, he's still worth it if he's outscored Soldado by more than 4 points in the meantime you can then transfer him out (for a hit if necessary).

FWIW I rate and have both currently.

          It's a really tough decision 🙁

Do you reckon Lamela could match Michu though since he's a goal threat but also has a great striker to supply?

Last season Hernandez more or less matched Michu from what I remember when they played together, I think the stats definitely supported that during last season at some point or maybe the whole season.

Also there's the fact that Rooney will give me some awesome United coverage :/

I don't think anyone is doubting Soldado's skills or achievements. But he has yet to prove himself in the PL. 2 of 3 yes, but both were well taken pens. In one of the matches he didn't even register 1 shot on target......hardly the stats of a 9.5m man. For that money it makes a lot more sense FOR NOW to bring Giroud, Studge, Lukaku or Benteke (all proven in the PL).

Lamela on the other hand could also be very dangerous.

    Guzan/McGregor

    Giroud/Benteke/Sturridge

Not keen on the keepers. I'd rather have Krul in the 5.0m price range and rotate with Westwood.

      Defense looks good.

Sess is a brave punt and one that could work out well. WBA have looked poor though and I'd wait to see how they set up first.
Toure isn't worth it imo - he's a DM (will never play further forward under Pellegrini's system) and he isn't gonna be scoring FKs every week.
Hazard is currently a doubt. As a current owner (I'm not WC'ing) I'm slightly biased in believing he'll come good, having been a tad unlucky so far. But there are good arguments to go with Oscar or Lamps instead. Lamela/Eriksen could be an inspired choice!

      Strikers are pretty much perfect.

    Evening all.

Posted this on the DZ earlier and got a good response (+10 and highlighted in green, oooh get me) - thanks for the responses anyone who's still awake. Anyway, thought I'd get your esteemed opinions on my current thinking:

    -------------------------

I thought I'd share a few thoughts that were swirling around my head as i walked to get my bread rolls earlier. Please feel free to tell me where i may be confused, as these will most likely inform my WC when I activate it. Sorry if any of the below have been covered.

    - A lot of people seem to be going off Soladao after 3 games. Under normal circumstances, 3 games is a good data set to work from, but in Spurs' case its almost certainly not. Spurs have obviously missed the link between mids and him, but with the 2 new signings they may have what they are looking for. If Soldado gets 1, 2 or 3 from open play in the next week or two, it'll change everything (you could say this about any striker, right) and he'll surely establish himself as a must have. Spurs have lots of new players, most of whom now have 3 games' exprirence, the 'click' could be just around the corner. I've got him, and I'm going to hold on for another 2 weeks.

    - With Ozil arrival, Walcott could be freed up for an (occasional) OOP. His disire to play up front is no secret, Arsenal are clearly light on strikers - maybe Wenger is planning to mould him into a true forward now the creative midfield part of his game can be picked up by Ozil. Ozils great strength is clearly providing assists (goal scroing record is nothing to be ignored, mind), however these seem to carry less weight this season, which leads me to....

    - Midfielders need goals to justify big price tags. With this in mind surely Michu is a must have? He's seems to have done everything but score? Admittedly, I've not seen the Swans play as yet, but they've not been dredful and the man has been in amoungst the action from all I've heard. Don't have him at the moment, but he'll almost certainly becoming in when I WC. It's been suggested that Europa League will afffect him, what's the general consensus here?

    - Negredo looks the best Man City option if he gets starts, again early doors. More time needed before making the final call on a City striker and see who the manager settles on, but he seems to be adapting as well as can be expected. At this stage, I'll be bringing in Tekkers and keeping Soldado and Sturridge, but this guy could definetly change my plans (and don't get me started on Lukaku). Another reason to wait another 1-2 weeks before the WC.

    - 4-3-3 looks be the way to go. Cleansheets are easier to come by than goals from midfield at the moment, plus centrehalves seem to be attracting the BPS. A backline with coverage from Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man U could reap huge points and could be worth going with 2 x 4.5-5 mids. Of course, it's still early days and if the goals start raining in then we'd be back to 3-4-3/3-5-2 in no time at all. More time needed...

    - United need to play Kagawa or Zaha soon, they look stale to me and need players who can inject some life.

    - New boys are looking good - early days of course and it's a long season, but they don't seem to be push overs most predicted. Just ask Man City. Cat, meet pigeons...

Glad I've kept the WC the more i think about the above. Now, if I can just resist for another 10 days!

      Briefly:

      - Will be waiting on that click from the Spurs land. As for now only 2 choices stand out Soldado or Lamela. Will wait further before deciding who's the best pick.

      - Walcott is essential. Expect rank drops if you don't won him.

      - Michu is on the monitor. Reckon Lamela will take his place as scoring mid from the previous season.

      - City's attack is to prone to rotation. Staying off.

      - Not sure with playing 4 at the back. Once the goal avg per GW returns to normal that formation discussion could be dead already.

-Kagawa and Nani look appealing at that price. We'll need to wait a bit more on them.

      - Always a good decidion to keep WC. Gives you leverage forthe rest of the season and an edge over managers that have spent it.

Agreed. Barkley seems to be the most attacking of the 3 MFs so maybe Barry will be the DMF, McCarthy/Gibson the box-to-box and Osman/Barkley the more attacking.

Why I'll be going with Ozil, Wally and Giroud.

It seems like overkill but initially I can see no harm with this. Giroud is scoring, should be increased by Ozil. Walcott should benefit goalwise too. Ozil will be earning a good few assists. So far few of the premium mids, or any mids for that matter, are getting points. We know Wally is getting them. If Ozil kicks off then he's another mid getting good points, if not you can change to a different mid after a week or two. That's my take anyways, I reckon he's a good prospect and only increases the potential of the other two doing well.

All good picks, it just means you have triple blanks if the get held by the park the bus sides and you have less coverage from other sides, but with mids being so bad at the mo its not a big problem.

If Arsenal are 1-0 up, they might tighten things up and sub Ozil or Wally.
If they are 2 up, they might think "game over" lets rest the big guns.
That means the odds of them getting you w huge haul reduces.
If the score none, that's 3 blanks.
For this tactic tp be good, they need to be scoring about 3 a week in my opinion.
Arsenal arent that brilliant they merit such a tactic.
      Not something I would consider.
2 is fine. I like to cover big sides and "double cover" one who has good easy fixtures. I like to rotate that as the side with easy fixtures.changes.
So like, if I have Coutinho and Sturridge and.Walcott while Liverpool have nice games, I then switch to Coutinho, Walcott, Giroud when Arsenal get the better ties (for example).
      Never 3 though.

Interesting points certainly, I've always been okay with 3 players if I think it'll pay off. As I said with no other mids firing, I only really want Spurs mid coverage which I'll have, so currently it's not that big a deal but I will of course be swapping one of Ozil or Wally at some stage I am sure when someone else emerges.

Lukaku can't play GW4. Eriksen may not start the first game. Moses won't be first choice.

Midfield "cover" wanted for 2 of: Spurs, Man United, Chelsea.

    Paulinho? Lampard? Fellaini...?

Not willing to compromise my Sturridge-Giroud-Benteke forward line.

Can pretty much afford any two midfielders from those clubs. I'll be rotating Brady/Redmond so can afford Walcott + 2 other luxury midfielders. I'm thinking about keeping Ben Arfa too though.

Are we convinced Lamela will start GW4 then?

Coverage is a lie IMO if you end up with an average FPL prospect (i.e. potentially Fellaini at Man Utd) just for the sake of coverage. I do like Lampard out of that lot though.

Is Rooney (when recovered) becoming a viable RVP alternative again?
With Fellaini picking the ball up deep in midfield there's less need for Rooney to keep tracking back, so will spend more time forward. Plus with his performance and energy making such an obvious difference v Swansea, maybe Moyes has woken up to his importance? Plus the 3.5m difference. What d'you think?

Well, for the question to come up multiple times last season then he must have had a few weeks where he was the better option. Rooney has often been a good source of FPL points so, provided you use the 3.5 well, why not? But I think over the whole season RVP will be better - which is why the 3.5M becomes of paramount importance if you're going down this path.

does anyone think Campbell is in for a double rise ?

I could sell soldado for 9.6 ... wait for Campbell to rise twice and buy soldado back at 9.7

gives me 0.1 realisable value.. but its a little risky

think I should go with it ?
