The Community Round Up

Squad balance and the influence of the Fantasy Premier Leagues’s new Bonus Points System on our formations were amongst the key discussions taking place on the boards this week. We also look at some of our posters’ worst ever Gameweeks and catch up with the latest from our community’s leagues.

The Hottest Topics

The international break provides a useful time for Fantasy managers to take stock of their team. It’s a time to consider playing the market with a wildcard, saving transfers or waiting nervously for your players to return from their travels unscathed.

In our discussion on international break strategy, Newarse was among those looking to invest in Wayne Rooney ahead of Gameweek 4’s clash with Crystal Palace, while SAAB admitted he was “dying to” wildcard. Sadly Rooney’s head injury has since put paid to Newarse’s plans.

For those considering wildcarding over the break, though, Get In urges caution. Similarly, Triggerlips has also been looking at how much a wildcard is worth and wonders whether it could be best used later in the season when the double Gameweeks mount up.

Impressive Tackle’s post late last week on squad balance proved one of the most popular yet. He looks at the ideal spread of money across the team, which will come in handy for those currently on a wildcard.

Elsewhere, Southampton fan Bayern Badonde has been keeping a close eye on his team’s midfield in an attempt to help us better understand their mid-price options. With so many forward options on offer this will prove useful to those looking for an alternative to Rickie Lambert.

For many, especially those that captained Robin Van Persie or Edin Dzeko, Gameweek 3 was a horror show.  When we asked what has been your worst ever Gameweek, SW6 had last season’s Gameweek 2 tally of just 27 firmly etched in his memory. Similarly, Adam West will never forget selling Dimitar Berbatov just prior to the Bulgarian putting five goals past Blackburn for Man United.

Finally, the Bonus Point System continues to vex the community, especially the lack of points for assists. Blue Tiger was on hand to run the rule over the new system and show the dramatic changes it is making to our formations.

Community Leagues

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First – 2 Million+ Club league, open to those with an overall worse than two million in the first five gameweeks, Goyko Locos continues to lead the competitors epic race for a respectable rank. He is now 920,000th in the FPL game with no hits or wildcard. To join the other 18 teams in this league the code is 459213-545168.

Meanwhile, in Thomas and Peppie & Felix‘s Friends Life H2H Competition Thomass, Forca Inter and Daniel top each of their three groups.

Forca Inter is also one of the five league leaders in In Tommy We Trust‘s  competition. The other four are Smarty Pants, Tommy Tour, Mind Over Mata and Binji.

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing competition saw 47 knocked out, with 934 left. The safety score was 34. In his Early Bird league 475 qualified and 256 were knocked out.

With a score of 207 Dr Ennet leads Fifa Las Vegas’s league, closely followed by Somebody’s Gonna Get Lit Up on 205 and Messimerized on 199.

In FFS UEFA’s leagues Shipsontrev was the top weekly scorer with 68 points. Lateriser12’s captaining of Olivier Giroud earned him this week’s Order of Extreme Valour award. Special mention goes to The Light Knight for his audacious decision to hand the armband to Hatem Ben Arfa. Tommy Tour is another doing well. He sits in first place in their La Liga on nine pts and is 529th in the world.

FFS Uefa have also announced details of their latest tournament, which is open to 737 community members and based around the FA Cup. More details can be found here and the registration form can be found here. Those already involved in the FFS UEFA leagues and those who applied unsuccessfully to be a part of that competition have all been given an automatic space so do not need to apply.

@Aquafresca -- Do you have the contact info of Chemikills from TotalFPL? I had some questions about his regression models of the Bonus Points. I also wanted to let him know that that article by itself persuaded me to donate to the site (it was about time anyways, had been using it for 3 years)

Agreed, incredible, statistically robust analysis. Was surprised by how low the CS bonus came out though. Something like 0.8 for fullbacks and 1.2 for centerbacks if I remember at all correctly. Had taken a very small look at Terry and Vidic and seen they got 7 bonus from 3 CS which is 2.33, were those games exceptional, are they exceptional, or is the estimate off?

Well you can't attribute all of Vidic/Terry's bonus points to the clean sheet. The coefficient on CS is estimating the effect of earning a clean sheet holding all other included factors equal. In reality, the blocks/clears/interceptions/minutes etc. also contributed to the bonus. If you included every factor that affects bonus in the regression then you'd probably have the exact coefficient, which would still be lower than Terry/Vidic because not every CB gets as much bonus as they do.

Passes is the biggest contributor for defenders. 3 BPS for short passes is a joke.

Yeah, the only other included factors apart from CS were goals, assists and the CB/FB binary variable. Blocks/clearances/interceptions/pass % etc weren't in there. I understood the CS estimate would give the bonus including the average effect of such stats. In fact, the CB/FB binary variable is there to account for the differences in these stats between CBs and FBs.

The interpretation on the clean sheet coefficient is something like, "If a player has a clean sheet, the model predicts a X (The coefficient value) increase in bonus, holding all other covariates constant." So that's holding whether the player was CB/FB constant, and how many goals/assists the player scored constant.

You can almost never entirely control for unobserved variable bias. Another example: How many goals were scored in the match. A clean sheet is likely worth more bonus in a match without goals, which both Vidic/Terry were involved in.

Yeah, as said it's the smallest of samples and I'd be interested to know what the average bonus per CS was for all defenders so far. But hypothetically, there shouldn't be a bias to the CS coefficient as a result of non-included factors, should there? They would cause the residuals to increase and hence reducd the usefulness of the model, but if the coefficient was say underestimating, surely that is a failure to minimize the residuals? Ie. If the coefficient was estimated closer to its true value, the residuals would shrink.

That's why I think the extra stats wouldn't be 'added on' to the CS coefficient but just increase the residuals.

Or if that's getting too hypothetical, try a practical example:

If we have modeled total bonus points = A x goals + B x assists + C x CSCB + D x CS - this may underestimate D (the CS coefficient) for some centerbacks and overestimate for some others, but it shouldn't underestimate most of them. It's meant to describe the entire bonus - there's no contribution from stats to add on.

I assumed the extra stats weren't added on because they weren't as easy to attain as goals/clean sheets/assists.

But just looking at it, I do think there's reason to believe that there's bias:

The omitted variables, take clearances for example, are certainly correlated with bonus because they are part of the BPS formula. They're also probably correlated with clean sheets, although I'm not 100% whether the correlation would be positive or negative. When an omitted variable affects either the independent variable (In this case, clean sheets) or the dependent variable (Bonus) your coefficient could be biased (Not the true value of the coefficient).

Also, I don't think higher residuals necessarily mean the coefficient is less true, it just means that the model is less certain that it is true, and by adding more covariates you reduce your degrees of freedom.

My question was about the r-squared stat. The highest it got by model 3 (which broke down CB vs. Fulbacks and also 1vs2 goals scored [which also has a small sample problem since I think it was just RVP & Campbell, right?]) was r^2 = .54. That's kinda low, only explaining 54% of the variability in bonus allocation, leaving almost half of the points distributed unexplained.

I wanted to know if I was missing something, or if the analysis was intentionally somewhat simplified to a manageable number of variables that are intuitive to understand / reason about.

Did that model restrict the population to just defenders? Reading it, I thought it was still including all players, which would mean that CBs were getting more bonus relative to all players, not necessarily full backs, but he interpreted it as CBs get an extra .51 bonus over fullbacks.

As to your R^2 question, my guess would be that it's a combination of two things 1) The relationship between goals/assists/clean sheets and bonus is not linear, so there's always going to be some error and 2) Omitted variables like clearances, blocks, passing and probably most importantly minutes.

It included all players, so I suppose that introduces a little more error since middies get a CS point too. However, knowing that one's defensive position (CB vs FB) is more predictive of bonus than assist vs. no assist is pretty important.

I still don't get why the r^2 barely moved though from model 1 to model 3 when the beta weights were quite high for the newly-added piece to each model. Probably its a sample size (degrees of freedom) issue I don't fully understand.

Hmm, yeah could be the sample size. I think it could also be that Bonus are 100% determined by the stats, and being a CB doesn't actually have a casual effect on bonus, it's just that CBs are more likely to have stats that lead to bonus. Just spitballing here. I try to not sweat the R^2 too much unless it's really really low.

But the CB/FB point is vital. If it's all players, then this section is misleading: "The way to interpret the above regression is that if a centre-back gets a clean sheet, they're likely to get 0.51+0.64 = 1.15 bonus points, whereas a full-back is likely to get on average 0.51 bonus points for a clean sheet."

The coefficient is measuring the difference between CBs and all other players, so it just means that CBs get more bonus relative to all other players, including midfielders, goalkeepers, and forwards as well as fullbacks. It doesn't tell us anything conclusive about CBs vs FBs.

just re-read it...your right. Its CB's vs. non-CB's, some of whom can't possibly benefit from a CS.

Agreed that it doesn't tell us much about FB vs. CB... but this info coupled with the goal scoring coefficients & the assist coefficients do lead me to believe that assist machine's are going to get squeezed out of bonus points (an insight that has probably already been established without all this nerd talk).

It is significant but leaves much of the variance unexplained. That's to be expected given all the possible factors affecting bonus it left out.

The thing is, the BPS formula is known. It is given on the FPL site. What we don't know is what kind of BPS distributions and hence bonus points we should expect in prsvdice. I think what this is showing is how well FPL events correlate to bonus points, which is to say, not incredibly well.

Hello all! I have this as my current squad:
    De Gea Boruc
    Ivanovic Kosc Shaw Reid Coleman
    Nolan Mirallas Walcott Brady Delph
    RvP Lambert Chamakh

I plan to make two changes and if I push through with those changes, squad will look like this:
    De Gea Boruc
    Ivanovic Kosc Shaw Reid Coleman
    Nolan PAULINHO Walcott Brady GUNNARSON
    RvP Lambert Chamakh

    What do you guys think?

For the Gunnarson slot, I am thinking of Redmond and even Barkley.

I have 2.8 left in the bank. Thank you!

      First thought: no.

      Second thought: Chamakh???

Third thought: Mirallas to PHernandez; Delph to Whittingham; Chamakh to Giroud or Benteke

Lastly: I think this whole strong defense fashion is going to go out of style, but I understand that is what you want to do, and have given advice to help you accomplish that which you wish to.

Regarding your last point: So are you saying I should have one budget defender instead of having five capable defenders at my disposal? Say I get Chester for one of the five defenders mentioned?

          Working backwards.

Switch Reid to Collins, and you can get Bentenke for Chamakh.

Read this about the new bonus system, it's what they're discussing in the first post on this page: http://totalfpl.com/Articles/181/testing-the-key-factors-for-bonus-points-under-bps

Regarding spending at the back. There has been an usual number of clean sheets to start the season and the new bonus system rewards defenders for that. My point would be that midfielders will not continue to fail to score, and the number of clean sheets per week will decline to norms. 3 weeks is a very small sample of a 38 game season.

Thank you especially for that point regarding spending at the back!

I was able to come up an idea of dropping Kosc instead and get Chester of Hull. With this move, I now have 4.2 in the bank. With my Chamakh priced at 5, I can drop him and get Giroud. I may have a -4 hit but I think it will be worth it. Thoughts on that?

-4 hit to upgrade Chamakh to Giroud or Bentenke seems worth it to me. Giroud's price just rose tonight, so no rush to decide with the break on. Might want to wait until after Bentenke & Giroud play their internationals to ensure you don't transfer in someone who gets hurt. Anyway, ask some other folks tonight or tomorrow about Giroud vs. Bentenke (or just read comments on other people asking the same question), and then decide.

I think so. His attacking threat is pretty nice and I've had him from the start. Maybe if I have a transfer to burn I'll swap him for a United/Chelsea defender, but if he stays healthy he should be right up at the top of defenders by the end of the year. There is the potential Micah Richards rotation I suppose, but for now I'm happy to keep.

Been loving all of the information surrounding all if the new signings and possible new lineups resulting from these new players. Here in Australia it's difficult enough to stay in touch with the premier league, let alone any of the European leagues where all of these great new players are arriving from. From what I can gather though, I believe this influx of players, especially those in the premium midfield bracket, will result in much more points for midfielders and much fewer points for defenders. This is just my opinion, but I believe that the change in bps and the introduction of several dangerous attacking players may have brought about an uneasy balance throughout the positions this season. In my opinion, any kind of formation or balance throughout a team could work this season, you just need the right players filling each position to make your formation viable. This opens doors to many new ways of playing the game. I've seen many hoping to deploy a 5-2-3 so far, but I don't think the enormous amounts of clean sheets can continue. I believe the only line where you shouldn't be trying to find a balance of budget and premium options this year is the forward line. Too many players have put their hands up already in the 8.7+ bracket to not consider 3 big hitters up top.

As for me then, I'll be looking to make the most balanced team possible, with a different lineup and formation likely each week. 1 good keeper and one budget friendly keeper that still plays full gametime eg. Migs/Szczesny + Boruc. In defence I'll be looking for a balance between big hitters such as Zabaleta and Vertonghen, and budget friendly gems like Chester and Collins. Midfield will be the most interesting line to figure out, and only in the coming few weeks will it become clear who the best options really are. For now though, the more expensive bracket has well and truly opened up. Only so many of these players can flourish FPL wise, so make sure you make your decisions on premium midfielders with FPL output in mind instead of almost bringing yourself to climaxing at the prospect of having a team with Ozil, Lamela and Silva in it. Having read a fair chunk of articles and comments, the most promising of the new midfielders on offer in my opinion is Eriksen, but only if he can hold down a starting role. Ozil's introduction into Arsenal should also boost Walcott, making him and Eriksen the 2 at the top of my radar in the premium midfielder bracket. Further down there are popular options such as Nolan, HBA and even Mirallas who could all do well this year. Whether or not you bother to choose any of the players in the mid price region is a whole other dilemma, with none seeming enticing enough yet to warrant a spot week in, week out. A place for a good budget price midfielder however has been critical so far. Depending on how big you plan to spend elsewhere dictates how many budget midfielders you will need. This is the only group of players that I am completely undecided about yet, with anywhere between 1 and 4 having the possibility of being viable. Up top, the main question still remains, rvp or non-rvp, a decision that will shape the rest of your team, formation and weekly captain picks. Other than that, it seems as if an expensive forward 3 is important. Despite the lack of goals so far this season, plenty of the premium forwards have got big returns. There seems to be a large number of good options, and only time will tell who will be in the best 3 at years end.

Good luck to anyone attempting something different or something new this year such as the 5-2-3, but I'll be playing a much more balanced formation. This year has brought a lot of new thinking and a new challenge that has made this game even more interesting and complex than ever, and I for one can't wait for this international break to finish so we can get stuck into it.

Good post... I read all of that, and agree with all of your sentiments...

I have a feeling that the dynamic will slowly shift back to favour the attacking players... at least leveling out this insane run of CS we've had so far...

I reckon all those WC wielding players squeezing in up to 3 budget midfielders, just to get RVP are going to regret it in the long term...

I still think 3-4-3 will be the optimum strategy going forward, but I am open to being proven wrong, and will adapt accordingly if I can be persuaded that these defender bonuses are here to stay...

Having said that, I think I will start to focus more on bringing in goal scoring midfielders as supposed to big assisters, since I am convinced by the small sample size that they are undervalued this year...

I'm talking about guys like Walcott, Lampard, Michu etc...

Watching the highlights, I'd assume he'll definitely have a share of set pieces, but since he's a lefty Walcott/Santi will probably duke it out for situations that call for a right footed free kick. No way to know about penalties until Arsenal get one, but I bet Arteta/Giroud won't give them up easily, record signing or no. Look at how stubborn Rooney was with RVP.

Record signing at Arsenal (by some distance) has got to account for something innit? Wouldn't move from Madrid easily until Wenger has promised him quite a lot.

Just looking at his stats for Germany last year where he's on most set-pieces

          8 games 5 goals 5 assists

Yeah, could be a great pick. Double digit goals and assists is a definite possibility, but I'm sticking with the known Wally/Giroud, mostly because I've already got him.

Walcott isn't really a good free-kick taker though. Santi was the better one and remember him scoring 2 screamers last year.

Corners? Perhaps Walcott is the one.

But having said that, not looking to get rid of Walc one bit....just looking to double up with the fixtures looking really promising.

to rvp or not to rvp that is the question. Personally I would pick sturridge over benteke for fixtures but for me rvp is too expensive until you can sell you players for profit. When teams hit 105m you can consider him as that extra cash helps keep you from having a weak def or mid depending on how you play it.

What I like about the structuring of your side is the flexibility of going 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 depending on the fixtures of your low priced mids and your defenders. Think this is the best way forward right now...and am setting up my WC team with this concept in mind.

Anyone going or thinking one of these 2 defender options?

A--$5.5 range: Sakho instead of Mertz or Rio ferdinand
B--$4.5 : Mbiwa over Collins or Jenkinson

I'd wait on A until you're sure he'll regularly start. Could be rotation to ease him in.

what about B? Mbiwa could outdo Collins
also Jenkisnon so far has played 3 games all 90 minutes for Arsenal, looks like maybe he willnot suffer risk rotation?

Mbiwa is a reasonable shout but I'm not as convinced by NewC's defensive abilities compared to WH's. If Jenks holds his position he's a bargain, but I'm not convinced he will for much longer.

Jenkinson played last 2 matches 90 min. 1st match 60 min.
Last matches Arsenal has like 2-3 subs and Jenkisnon stayed all 90 min.

Yep Dawson not nailed on now.
Have gone Evra and Walker because they seem to be more nailed on. However im wondering if i should be concentrating on centrebacks.

I read something today about how Fellanis presence in the holding role would allow Evra to get much further forward, rather like Baines at everton, so hoping for some ttacking returns.

Is Vidic likely to be subject to rest? Or will it be Ferdinand? They seem to have a fair few choices at centreback , Evans not going be on bench all the time

Very hard to second-guess the way Mourinho will rotate for CL games but Chelsea's easier fixtures gives him more flexibility than City or United who will have selection problems. Ironically, it's the stronger players that we think are prone to rotation in these circumstances. Don't forget that Ivan can play CB too.

I agree about the price factor, but that and game-time aren't the only things to consider. terry and vidic have struggled with fitness the past few seasons. if they get injured, then you have to divert yourself away from your transfer plans.

Sat on my 1FT during international break watching my planned 2nd transfer (-4 for this week if necessary or free next week assuming nothing else comes up) become more expensive. So far Cabral dropped 0.1 and Hernandez risen 0.1 and may rise again before Wednesday night and definitely another by next week.

Got me thinking how much is TV worth in points at this stage of the season? Would you pay 10pts now for $1m additional in the bank to improve your side? Looking at it I feel I could use the $m to easily set-up team improvements that would pay back the 10pts over a course of the season.

Common advice on here is to wait until all international / Europe / cup matches finished and accept price changes as long as you can still afford the move (my current tactic). But, by the time I make my move I will have lost potentially $0.4m. If I had instead made my move on Monday before any price changes, worst case scenario is that an injury happens somewhere else in my team or worse still to the player I bought in that would force an extra transfer at 4pt cost.

Based on my $m / 10point trade off it would still have been worth it, right?? And there is a reasonable chance that nothing would go wrong and I have just cost myself $0.3-0.4m

team value is overrated because you only gain money if you sell the players you make profit on. 9 out of 8 times, the players who are rising are the ones who are performing well...so who would want to buy a striker after a hattrick and then sell after they've made a slight profit?

Get the players you want and who you think will score well, if you happen to get rises on them, then great. But don't bend over backwards chasing the coin. Points over profit

I take your point on sell-on value so really only cost me $0.2 on that front. I do think higher sell value can be turned into points over a season. And one way to increase sell value is to move earlier in the week for rising price players or when your player is falling. The risk is an injury later in the week. I would never change who I wanted just for transfer value, it's merely the timing of the change and making a few more early in the week "risky" transfers

Definitely not WC, that's a pretty good team.

That transfer looks pretty good, even for a hit. Though I'd consider getting a solid defender first instead of Toure as your backline is pretty weak if Clyne's out of favour too.

Probably Lamb > Studge / Benteke and Toure > Mert / Vidic / Walker is what i'd do
