Moving Target

Moving Target – Peter Odemwingie

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay made his eighth of the summer transfer window by acquiring Peter Odemwingie from West Brom on a three-year contract. The 32-year-old arrives for a reported fee of £2.5m, with the Welsh club beating Stoke and Swansea to his signature in a frantic transfer deadline-day scramble:

Speaking to the press after completing the deal, the Bluebirds boss admitted Odemwingie’s time in the top-flight with the Baggies was a key factor in his decision to splash the cash:

“I’m delighted to sign a player with a proven record of scoring in the Premier League. Peter’s record speaks for itself. He’s versatile, got great pace and does bring us that bit of experience we need. He’s an outstanding footballer at Premier League level, an intelligent footballer with a bit of guile. I spent a lot of time with him and he’s an intelligent and thoughtful person too. He’s going to prove an asset for Cardiff City of that I’ve no doubt.”

The History

Born in the Soviet Union, Odemwingie came through the youth system at CSKA Moscow before kicking off his career in Nigeria with Bendel Insurance. After notching 19 times in 53 appearances between 2000 and 2002, he was picked up by Belgian club La Louviere in the summer of 2002. Odemwingie’s time in the Jupiler Pro League lasted a couple of years – with nine goals accrued over 44 appearances he was snapped up by French club Lille prior to the end of the summer transfer window in 2004/05.

Having racked up 23 goals and 11 assists from 75 Ligue 1 appearances, the Nigerian was on his travels yet again, with Lokomotiv Moscow shelling out $14m for his services in July 2007. His time in Russia produced near-identical statistics, with 21 goals and 11 assists from 74 league matches before Odemwingie rolled up to the Hawthorns in August 2010.

The 32-yeard-old immediately took the Premier League by storm and, handing Fantasy managers a real cut-price contender for their three-man frontlines, produced 15 goals and nine assists in 32 games over his debut season. Odemwingie’s second year was far less successful, with 10 goals and three assists accrued from 30 appearances, while his final term at the midlands outfit proved something of a disappointment – a move to QPR was denied in the most public of fashions last January and, handed a peripheral role under Steve Clarke, he managed just five goals and three assists from 25 matches, with 12 of those games coming courtesy of the bench. On the international stage, Odemwingie has turned out for his country on 55 occasions and found the net nine times.

The Prospects

Mackay’s praise would certainly suggest the former Baggie hasn’t just been purchased to warm the Bluebirds’ bench all season. Although the Cardiff boss hailed the Nigerian’s versatility, it seems he is likely to earn most of his game time on the flank – Mackay somewhat tellingly admitted in an interview earlier this week that winger Craig Conway was omitted from the club’s 25-man squad as a result of Odemwingie’s arrival.

At present, Craig Bellamy and Peter Whittingham still look in the driving seat for the flank roles but, given that the former picked up a few injuries last term and the latter suffered from a lack of form and failed to find the net after October, Mackay has clearly drafted in Odemwingie as a viable alternative for the wing roles, with plenty of Premier League experience under his belt. Strength is depth is crucial for the Cardiff boss but the new boy’s arrival could cut into both Bellamy and Whittingham’s game time, with the likes of Craig Noone shifting further down the pecking order.

Coming in at 5.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.8 in the Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, Odemwingie’s classification as a forward across the Fantasy games looks problematic, though his adaptability could see him utilised through the middle late on in games if Mackay’s switches to a two-man frontline when chasing a result. Certainly, with Fraizer Campbell and Andreas Cornelius currently number one and two for the lone forward role, it would take a spate of injuries to promote him to a central position and bring him into our Fantasy thinking. For now, it’s a case of “wait and see” but as the season unfolds, there would be no surprise to see Mackay increasingly turn to the Nigerian’s experience and proven Premier League record as he looks to rack up the points to secure his side’s safety.

Top goal scorer odds for this season:

    1. RVP 2.5/1
    2. Sturridge 10/1

    That is all.

Odds offered by bookies are influenced heavily by the amount of money placed on different bets. A favourite is simply the bet that more people place money on. To put another way, it's the average probability as estimated by the betting public (less a bit for the bookies profit).

Actual probabilities is just the chance that something will happen though if I knew how to calculated this I'd be winning lots of money.

Alright, that's fair enough. Agree, there could be less separating the two than the implied odds imply.

The bookmakers make short odds for the one that's bet on the most. It's the same as England to win the world cup odds being much shorter in English bookmakers than their foreign counterparts.

Sturridge isn't a good shout due to niggling injuries. Giroud/Benteke worth a bet over RVP.

With all the buying of Hernandez. Do we think rotation will play a big part in Swansea's PL campaign?
Most teams have had reserves and changes, playing weaker teams for the group stages of the Europa. i.e Spurs, Newc etc I know it's speculation but do we think Laudrup will prioritise league position or qualification for the knockout stages?

There's been a lot of talk of how the 4 man back line is now the way to go. Getting 3 - 4 high price defenders to take advantage of the extra BPS from clean sheets.

This seems logical but equally there's many saying this is a short term trend and the once the midfielder's start scoring everything will return to normal and all those who went defensive will be sorry.

But I'm thinking its more than that, across the league teams look more organised and solid at the back and a lot of teams have improved the defenses over the summer:

Arsenal - Second best defense in the league last season and with same back line they will be strong again. Predicted goals against = 34

Aston Villa - Can't be worse than last season and are unlikely to get hit for 8 again. Predicted goals against = 55

Cardiff - One of the best defensive records in the Championship last season and look difficult to beat especially at home. Predicted goals against = 58

Chelsea - Mourinho is back his teams are always tight at the back, expect far fewer goals conceded this year. Predicted goals against = 30

Crystal Palace - Holloway's teams always bomb forward and leave the defense exposed, expect loads conceded. Predicted goals against = 70

Everton - Will probably concede more than last year but not by many as they have the same back line. Predicted goals against = 45

Fulham - Adding Stkelenberg and Amorebieta alongside Hangeland should improve them this year. Predicted goals against = 48

Hull - Only 52 conceded in 46 games in the championship could mean another good year for their defense. Predicted goals against = 55

Liverpool - Rogers has got the team set up his way now and with Migs, Toure, and Sahko joining the back line they won't let many in this season. Predicted goals against = 30

Man City - Have lost the defensive stubbornness of Mancini but still have a great defenders and two deep lying CM's for cover. Predicted goals against = 35

Man Utd - Vidic and Rio back fit with improving De Gea and cautious Moyes tactics will see far more clean sheets this season. Predicted goals against = 30

Newcastle - Had a shocker last year but if they get sorted and repeat 11/12 form they could do well. Predicted goals against = 55

Norwich - Solid at the back but had a few rough games last season which is unlikely to happen again. Predicted goals against = 55

Southampton - Much better under Pochettino, adding Lovren and Wanyama, will concede far less this season. Predicted goals against = 45

Stoke - Hughes not as defensively minded as Pulis but still a very solid team. Predicted goals against = 45

Sunderland - Look likely to have an awful season, expect loads of goals. Predicted goals against = 65

Swansea - Managed to keep same defense as last year but Europa league may stretch them a bit thin. Predicted goals against = 55

Spurs - New midfield looks to protect the defenders better, also adding Chiriches gives them more options. Predicted goals against = 40

West Brom - Had difficulties keeping clean sheets last year and don't expect much to change. Predicted goals against = 55

West Ham - Again look solid at home but tend to concede plenty away, expect similar season. Predicted goals against = 50

    Total predicted goals against 2013/14 = 955
    Total goals against 2012/13 = 1,063

    That's a 10% drop on last year.

I know this is just speculation but with the teams strengthening defensively (especially the top 7) plus 2 of the 3 promoted teams having good defensive records we may be seeing a low scoring year. Which could be a one off or it might mean a return the form of 5-6 years ago when Premier league teams actually had good defenses. Add on the new BPS and a defensive setup looks more and more the way to go.

But saying this. You could equally argue that the likes of Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea have improved their forward lines, which in turn leads to an expected increase in goals scored.

      So..

Some guys think that each team will concede the above stated amount of goals, therefore there will be 108 less goals scored this season.

Based on this opinion, we should invest in defenders?

I get the idea but you really are just plucking numbers out the air to try to show your point.

And there's no way us or Swansea will concede the same amount as Hull.

Thanks for the effort, and for sharing your thoughts.

If we look at data from the past 3 years, we see that the past two gameweeks have been somewhat of an anomaly.

The LOWEST average goals per gameweek (of the opening three GWs since 2010/11) was 2.0 (GW1, 2011/12).

GW1 THIS season harvested an average of 2.55 goals, HIGHER than the average of the previous 3 seasons ((2.6+ 2.0 + 2.7)/3 = 2.43).

GW2 averaged a measly 1.7 and GW3 an even measlier 1.44 goals per game. So off trend that the lowest average goals per game in the opening 10 gameweeks of the past seasons was in fact higher than GW2 and 3 (1.8 gpg, GW10, 12/13).

I'd argue that while we may see a decline in the average number of goals per game due to the defensive improvements of lower teams in relation to stronger teams, the average goals per game is unlikely to very much from a long standing trend.

      CHECK THIS OUT:

      In 21 seasons;
      - the lowest average goals per game is 2.45 (2006/7)
      - The highest is 2.81 (2011/12)
      - Average 2.61.

I think these number make the argument for 'keep calm and stick to your original plan' a very strong one.

I get it that people may be tempted to get all reactionary re: BPS and go for expensive defenders. What I don't get is why people think that the Premier League has suddenly become the domain of watertight defenses that guarantee clean sheets.

Nothing has changed fundamentally, and while bonus points are great, they're hardly the end all and be all of the game.

Good luck to those doing a solid four at the back, or even 5 as I've read on this thread. If the BPS river changes course, though, it's going to be messy getting your resources out of the defense.

    Anyway, carry on, then.

The two lowest scoring weeks for goals in the last 3 years, back-to-back. Won't continue, but defenders should pick up an extra bonus point or two for their clean sheets which makes me want to spend a little more on my defenders, but 5-2-3 is suicidal imo.

    Migs Given

Yesteray I mailed FPL as regards the incorrect placement of Danny Rose as a midfielder in the game. This is their reply,
Player positions are selected before the launch of the game and once the game is launched unfortunately they cannot be changed. As he was moving back to Tottenham his position as a defender was not certain until it was announced after the release of the game.

We apologise for any inconvience this causes,
