Moving Target

Moving Target – Stephen Ireland

In a somewhat surprising transfer deadline-day deal, Stoke boss Mark Hughes snapped up midfielder Stephen Ireland on a season-long loan from Aston Villa. The 27-year-old is the fifth new arrival at the Britannia this term and follows Erik Pieters, Marc Muniesa, Marko Arnautovic and Oussama Assaidi to the club as Hughes looks to restructure the Potters’ playing approach after succeeding Tony Pulis over the summer:

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Stoke Chief Executive Tony Scholes revealed the player’s previous performances under Hughes at the Etihad persuaded the Potters boss to acquire his services:

“Stephen is a player that Mark knows really well and when the opportunity arose he was keen to add him to his midfield and attacking options. Arguably the most successful period of Stephen’s career to date was when he played for Mark at Manchester City and we hope that he can rediscover that form.”

The History

A product of the Man City youth academy, Ireland joined the club at the age of 15 back in August 2001. The midfielder made his debut during the 2004/05 season but took his time to make an impact, producing a single goal and pair of assists across 47 appearances in his first couple of campaigns at the club.

After notching four goals and three assists in 33 appearances the following year, Ireland’s nine goals and nine assists in 35 league games across 2008/09 earned him City’s Player of the Year award under the guidance of Hughes but he failed to maintain his consistency. The Welshman’s dismissal in the early stages of the following season saw Ireland become a peripheral figure under Roberto Mancini and, after producing just two goals and a pair of assists, he was transferred to Aston Villa as part of the deal that took James Milner to the Etihad.

Ireland’s time in the midlands proved bitterly disappointing as his once-promising career began to fall apart. Over the next three years, he failed to convince a trio of managers and was handed a combined tally of 47 games by Gerard Houllier, Alex McLeish and Paul Lambert, producing just a single goal and four assists.

The Prospects

With just a year left of his contract at Villa, Ireland’s switch to Stoke means he is now effectively playing for his future. Despite failing to feature this term so far, the midfielder insists he is fully match sharp and is desperate to make an impact at the Britannia:

“I’m fit and raring to go. I don’t want to be eased in and I don’t want to have to take my time; I just want to get straight in there as fast as I can. I want to participate in whatever way I can, whether that be for the full 90 minutes or whether it be coming off the bench for the final five minutes. Whatever time I get I will give it everything I have. It’s been a long time in the waiting for me so I want to get going and show everyone what I am capable of.”

To an extent, Ireland’s situation mirrors that of his manager. Hughes was also written off by many after a hugely unsuccessful stint at QPR led to his dismissal last term and the pair have plenty to prove this time out – the new Stoke manager’s tactics are steadily making an impact, however, and have now harvested three straight wins in all competitions after a narrow Gameweek 1 defeat at Liverpool.

As the Staffordshire outfit become more accustomed to their new manager’s possession-based approach, it’s clear we can no longer view them in the same way as we once did under Pulis. Hughes’ 4-4-1-1 formation could certainly favour Ireland and hand Fantasy managers an intriguing cut-price prospect if he can nail down his preferred role in “the hole” behind a lone forward, though it’s uncertain whether he’ll be immediately handed a starting berth.

Indeed, much depends on where fellow new boy Marko Arnautovic ends up. If the six foot three Austrian – classified as a midfielder across the Fantasy games – is utilised as a lone forward, then he looks the one to consider, though a shift to the right flank would likely see Jon Walters moved into the middle, thus denting Ireland’s prospects.

Coming in at a mere 4.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.4 in the Sky Sports game, his lack of impact over the past few seasons means Ireland is particularly budget friendly. Fantasy managers will be understandably sceptical but if Hughes can help reignite the potential that saw him shine at the Etihad, we may have an unlikely cut-price contender on our hands.

Ok i'm doing quite terrilby at the moment and should have wildcarded 2 weeks ago to save cash :(.
    I've got this so far but I'm 3.6m over-budget:

    Mignolet Boruc
    Toure Coleman Ivanovic Collins Chester
    Walcott Lampard Toure Barkley Ward-Prowse
    Benteke Sturridge RVP

Suggestions for changes to save some cash?

DEF : too expensive for an RVP team - would go Toure -> Ben Turner (Cardiff) to save 1m
      MID : looks okay
      ATT : Go Studge 9.2 -> Lukaku (7.4) next week; save 1.8m

So you have 0.8m to go!

Got a real Koscielny v Mertesacker dilemma going on :
    a) who' s more likely to be rotated for the easier league games (difficult CL group to negotiate)
    b) who's more likely to get decent bps
    c) who's more of a goal threat
    d) is Vermaelen a genuine threat to either......if so, who & why

    Anybody got any views?

Sure you're all busy but if not how about this for a radical idea probably of interest to England fans specifically but principle could be used for other countries:

With the constant criticism of the England team, lack of English players in the top division and perceived tactical, technical and coaching flaws as well as the insistence on picking players on loyalty (possibly sponsor satisfying too) rather than ability or suitability to play in a system. The only way this will change is probably under the guidance of some benevolent millionaire(/billionaire).

A club could then set about employing great coaches probably from national and club teams that already have success in international competitions. The player recruitment would be predominantly home grown talent, the academy would bring up new generations of English talents and the transfer policy would focus on buying the best English players available. All players that are signed or come through the academy will be required to follow the system and tactics the team coaches wish to employ and anyone falling foul will be transfer listed or frozen out.

The team would clearly require vast resources not least because the rewards would not be instant. However long term the team would extremely marketable to fans, media and sponsors and may even lead to copy cat teams being set up. This team would form the foundation of the national team with the inherent advantages of players playing together regularly in formations and under tactics they understand but which are flexible and suited to international tournaments.

All pie in the sky really but that is the only way I can see England becoming a serious threat in international tournaments. It would address tactics, player motivation (dealing with egos), historical English flaws basically.

The main thread is that EU law and inflated English player transfer prices prevents this approach becoming a FA mandate therefore benevolent billionaire with a vision is required. Anyone interested?

    (Conclusion: we're doomed)

Nice idea. One of the issues is that the best players would get snapped up by the top clubs, holding this team up.

I think the main reason is there is too much presure on clubs in the PL to give their young English players a chance. The money the make in the PL allows them to spend money on a more experienced/developed player. Until that is fixed there will be problems.

True. The rewards for success are great and cost of failure even greater so risk isn't really rewarded which is what filling the team with youth players would be. Villa have given this approach a good try though so there are some exceptions.

If you look at American Sports (no relegation) teams are prepaired to be crap for a few years. Take the Chicago Clubs as an example, they got rid of their better players for a whole youth system that they hope will let them contend in a few years.

It would be great if PL clubs could do that but if they did they would end up in League 1 in no time.

This is also true. I'm sure the top teams would sign up to this indeed a euro super league has been mooted for a long time. Would kind of suck not to have promotion or relegation though.

It's quite interesting what's going on in Turkey atm. They've introduced loads of legislation meaning clubs have are limited on foreign players and have to start a certaina mount of Turkish players. A lot of good foreign players have been sold and young turkish players been bough. Will be interesting to see how it affects their national team.

Nice idea and not at all beyond the realms of possibility.

If a charity-minded billionaire genuinely saw football as a community oriented social enterprise, then there is no reason why they couldn't bankroll it themselves.

I think it's a matter of time before the right sort of person came along, and it would take time. I would guess if it was to happen - it would be at a lower league team that rose up through the ranks.

In this case you would have to drill an entire club, its fans and its players with a specific mentality and a sense of loyalty, and to be prepared for slower gains and even failures while doing so. You would also have to strike the balance between keeping any stars later on - do you rely on the sense of loyalty you have instilled in them, or do you force the issue by paying them higher salaries - thereby going against your own principles of loyalty for loyalty's sake anyway? Realistically you would need a large wad of cash and a high degree of success to carry this out at top level.

You would also need to make the mission statement clear and unwavering to the media who seem to dictate what happens more than anyone else with the national team. Perhaps the billionaire could also launch a tabloid style national newspaper a la Marca for PR.

So that Yaya rise now means I can afford a team of

    Lewis Migs

    Vidic Walker Whittaker Collins Chester

    Ozil Lamela Wally Pablo Brady

    Giroud Studge Tekkers

Now my reasoning is that none of the big hitting mids have started firing so I don't mind taking punts on Ozil and Lamela, I can easily swap to some other mid if they do start firing. Arsenal triple up is of course a punt too but it's the same reasoning, I can swap if someone better emerges. Thoughts gents?

Too much riding on punts? By too much I mean too much cash. With your own reasoning, getting just Özil for either Lamela or Wally will be better unless you feel certain they will both explode in their respective first games.
I always used to start the season and a WC with at least one of the most expensive players in each bracket to be able to make those swaps without hits, just not sure you need 3 in the 'same' position.

It's a fair point but, being honest, I actually think Ozil and Lamela are two options that might do well straight out and there are no options in any bracket that appeal to me.

        Interesting.
It really depends heavily on how the Spurs midfield clicks and how Lampard looks like starting regularly.

I'd be worried about Luiz starting every week, could see a bit of rotation Pre champions league games. But the same can be said about Vidic.

I think Liverpool defence is a good idea at the moment, and Enrique is the most likely to bring in attacking points. Agger will attract more bonus in low scoring games though

Liverpool have improved since last season, but you can exclude the 5-0 home win as that doesn't really count.
