The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

A stunning hat-trick from Luis Suarez maintains his devastating form and keeps Liverpool’s prolific “SAS” pairing on track. Meanwhile, at Old Trafford, a wonder strike from a lesser owned Austrian earns our attention, as David Moyes is forced to turn to his benched young starlet to help rescue three points and keep himself in touch with the leaders.

The Game Changer

We went in the Gameweek without a Premier League hat-trick this season – a statistic that was emphatically banished by Luis Suarez who single handedly dismantled West Brom at Anfield.

A superb solo effort opened his account, before two headers put the game to bed prior to Daniel Sturridge getting in on the act with a sublime fourth for Brendan Rodgers’ side. The Liverpool “SAS” produced again, then, taking their account to ten goals and four assists between them since the partnership was renewed in the Gameweek 6 win at Sunderland.

Incredibly, that has seen Daniel Sturridge score in every match since the return of Suarez, but, significantly, he’s now been overshadowed by his Uruguayan strike partner for the last two outings, with Suarez set to pocket 17 points this evening to add to the 10 gathered in the 2-2 draw at Newcastle.

Predictably perhaps, Suarez is emerging as the weapon of choice in this vibrant Liverpool attack but the consistency of Sturridge continues to make a case for doubling up on the duo. A trip to league leaders Arsenal next weekend will provide their sternest test yet – deliver again and the case for “SAS” acquisition will build to new heights.

The Underused

While he was on the losing side at Old Trafford, the performance and superb dead ball strike by Marko Arnautovic at last revealed his potential.

United’s tormentor in the first half, the Austrian was handed back his role on the flank as Peter Crouch returned to lead the attack for the Potters. Nevertheless, Arnautovic made his mark on his fifth Premier League start to suggest that he could yet be a key figure for Mark Hughes’ side and a factor in our Fantasy seasons.

Priced as a 5.5 midfielder, we’ve already seen Arnautovic deployed as a lone striker, while his propensity to shoot and ability at set-plays adds to his potential. Owned by less than 1% Fantasy Premier League managers, it’s likely that the Austrian will have to prove his worth again before interest begins to escalate given the competition for places in our midfield, even within his price bracket.

Even so, with home matches against Southampton, Sunderland and Cardiff to come in the next five, Arnautovic should have the opportunity to impress and draw further attention to his talent.

As a side note, Mark Hughes has confirmed, post-match, that illness forced Arnautovic to make way shortly after half-time.

The Selection Poser

While the Suarez vs Sturridge debate will be re-ignited and reassessed following Suarez’s superb haul, elsewhere it was the benching of Adnan Januzaj that will have caused some concern amongst his early adopters.

Having started in the 1-1 draw with Southampton, David Moyes elected to take the 18-year-old out of the spotlight for the visit of Stoke, only to turn to him in the final quarter to reinvigorate the ailing home side. Once again, Januzaj impressed, raising the expectations of the Old Trafford crowd whilst bringing fresh ideas and impetus to the United attack. Ultimately, his introduction was instrumental in their comeback which saw them earn the three points.

It’s not clear what this means for Januzaj – clearly, as we’ve previously indicated, Moyes appears to need the young winger’s influence right now. While today’s decision to start him from the bench will have caused some concern amongst his Fantasy owners, then, his performance will have at least confirmed his importance to the cause. It remains to be seen if that’s enough to see Januzaj start at Fulham in Gameweek 10.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    A) Eriksen > 5.1 mid (Morrison?) Lukaku>Rooney
    B)Eriksen> 6.4 mid (Lallana?) Lukaku >Negredo
    C) Transfer Toure or Kosc out.

I wouldn't bring Rooney in now. Wouldn't bring in Negredo either.

How about Suarez/Aguero? Have enough in the bank?
And what's the rest of your team?

Or how about Keep Lukaku. and Upgrade Eriksen to Silva/Hazard

Aguero costs 0.2 more than rooney so I would have to get a 4.9 mid for eriksen and not too keen on januzaj.. already have hazard.

        Boruc (Stekelenburg)
        Toure Kosc Zabs (Shaw Vlaar)
        Hazard Michu Ramsey Barkley (Eriksen)
        Gru Studge Lukaku..

0.3 in bank eriksen at 8.0 so I would have to fork out an extra m to get in silva..

I refuse to get Yaya, therefore my City options are basically Silva or Aguero (with an outside chance of Kolarov)

I can either do Ozil/Michu to Silva, Suarez to Aguero or Sturridge/Lukaku to Aguero, while downgrading elsewhere

Of the 23 Liverpool goals he's scored, he has scored more than once only 3 times it seems

Brace vs Newcastle away last season (in the 6-0 win)
Hat trick vs Fulham last season (3-1 win away)
Brace vs Notts County this season (4-2 win)

But he has scored in 8 out of 9 games this season, so I'm not willing to complain. Consistency like that is just incredible.

Not sure how safe Luiz is after the mistake the other day. Personally, I think Cahill has been much more solid this season. Maybe Toure + Ivanovic instead?

So based on the pattern of previous years we should expect price changes sometime in the next 5 minutes (around 1.40). Don't shoot me if they don't happen though. Better to be warned and safe than miss them completely 😉

I know, I know. Thanks for the replies. My shambolic captaining continues.

We were crunching some numbers last week and after "the incident" on Saturday I am down to less than 50% of potential maximum for my captains, at less than 5ppg. TorresMagic figured something in the 60-70% range was good stuff, I think around 7ppg. It takes a few minutes but is a nice way to measure how you're doing.

You need to take care in your initial set up to pick solid 90 minute week in week out players.

I don't know how in to the game your mates are, but you can also bring your subs in for the Sunday or Monday games in addition to the starting 11.
So picking for fixture rotation for the Sunday games can reap big rewards. Mainly those teams playing in Europe, particularly the Europa league who always play Sundays after the Thursday games.

Give it a whirl next year BigAndy, you might really get in to it.

FPL without doubt has the best formatting of the site and ease of access to all the info you want. I haven't come across any other game as well and easy to use or as comprehensive stats and info.

Both Studge and RVP scored this week and both could have bagged a few more, plus Fulham away is a great fixture for RVP and Aguero might get rested against Norwich (although i doubt it)

Ditching RVP just as he comes into form is probably a bad idea, especially as Moyes has figured out that resting him is a bad idea

I'm composed now (OK that's a lie) but 25 minutes in to the games today I was BRICKING it. I'd captained Rooney over Suarez and Suarez had scored twice and Rooney had done nothing. I thought I was looking at my first captain fail of the season in the worst way possible.

The goal, assist and 3 bonus for Rooney saved me. While I'll obviously greedily look at Suarez's score and wish I doubled it, I'm pleased with the12x2 from Rooney, I'd jump on it any other week.

Remember though you only lose the difference in score between the two players. ie. 17 -12 = 5. Not actually as bad as it appears, people often assume it's the difference doubled.

Yes, huge relief for me too when RvP notched. It always seemed a risk but it was the Arsenal game I was eyeing nervously this morning. I thought Ozil, Giroud & Ramsey would put me to the sword. I wouldn't have captained Suarez because I thought WBA would be harder to break down, but I'm just pleased I had him in my team. Last season, I didn't manage a single hat trick.

Same here, I was terrified of my own team Arsenal as I didn't own Ozil. I didn't captain Suarez for the same reason, thought WBA would park the bus and counter fast.

For some reason I got several hattricks last season, I think it's because I love explosive players. Bale, Walcott, Suarez. Can't remember if I got one from RVP.

Mostly luck. The only player there that I believe I actually brought in for the hattrick was Bale against Villa as I saw he'd been moving central. The others were unexpected. I should have expected the Suarez one!

what is the most amount of hits you have taken at once? considering a -12 hit myself for next week as the two players i want are close to rising, and i can't afford if they go up.

Needs to be players you'll keep for 12 weeks or more for that (a 1/3 of the season)

Took that size hit early in the season once. Chose to take hits early and save my WC for springtime

well one of the is for aguero, and the other is to free up cash so i can actually afford aguero and wally when he comes back

I did it this week. Abject failure at captain but I have fixed the bones of my team, especially the midpriced midfield wasteland, so I now have three elite mids that give me flexibility and a higher ceiling. Defense is much better if GlenJo is not hurt.

But it would have been nicer if Benteke hadn't done what he did while Rooney did what he did.

Imagine if you could predict with absolute certainty the best scorers each week.

Now there's probably a potential 120pt team every week so even if you needed to take 11 hits every week to get that team you would only lose 44 pts from the 120 leaving 76pts every week.

This would give a end of season score of 2888 and would win FPL every season.

My point is 'hits aren't a bad thing as long as they work'

Indeed. I wonder if Mutch (4.4) is becoming an option too? He seems to be getting full games now.

Mutch lacks the danger appeal. Fantasy team wise, having RavMo on the team sheet with the Uruguayan just seems harmonious

There's always the danger he'll be dropped 😉 But yeah, RavMo is the sexier option.

yes but benteke isn't that explosive. he is a consistent but not really captaincy material. and while lukaku can be explosive he isn't 100% nailed for 90 mins at everton yet

Could be the forward line I end up with. Certainly looks good, but with one striker from Villa and one from Everton - is it actually as robust as it looks?

I know. But a Tekkers type from poor side who gets all their goals and baps often beats a giroud type who only gets some if them for a better club
