The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

A goalscoring legend rolls back the years to put in a match winning shift that pockets him a double figure Fantasy haul. Elsewhere, West Ham’s resilience is on show to tempt our belated investment, while down at the Lane, Tottenham’s midfield personnel remain in flux as another popular target finds himself on the timber.

The Game Changer

In a season seemingly crowded by prolific, stand-out options in attack, it’s perhaps ironic that Fernando Torres should, at last, show a glimmer of former glories.

Today’s goal and assist returns in the dramatic win over City saw Torres deliver on the promise he had previously shown in recent matches. More significantly, his performance seemed to demonstrate a new hunger and confidence coursing through his veins as, time and time again, he took it upon himself to stretch the City backline with positive movement and surges between defenders. All this following a glaring miss that typified his previous displays at the Bridge.

It would be premature and foolish to announce that Torres is back but, having impressed in matches at Spurs and in the Champions League, the former Liverpool striker is beginning to chain together convincing performances. Today he capped it with Fantasy returns – a double figure haul no less.

As Chelsea’s expensive midfield options – Oscar and Eden Hazard – drew a blank, Torres is perhaps unlucky to find our forward lines so fully booked by other in-from options. It seems unlikely that Fantasy attention will come his way in the current landscape, but there’s little doubt that Torres’ form at least warrants our attention and recognition.

The Underused

Despite earning a fifth clean sheet of the season at the Liberty stadium today, West Ham’s defence remains largely ignored by Fantasy managers.

With under 6% ownership, keeper Jussi Jääskeläinen is the most popular member of Sam Allardyce’s resolute rearguard. While his 5.5 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag is perhaps an obstacle given the value offered by Southampton’s Artur Boruc, in front of him we have a cast to choose from across the price brackets.

Winston Reid is perhaps the jewel in the crown – a dominant centre-back of some standing, he already has a league goal to his name and top scores for Bonus Point System (BPS) points with 52. Below him, we find James Tomkins, a relatively new option having earned a recall in place of former favourte James Collins. Priced at 4.7, Tomkins arguably has a greater goal threat than Reid and is just as capable of earning bonus points given his aerial presence.

At the lower end of the scale, Razvan Rat now looks assured of starts as Joey O’Brien and Guy Demel battle for the right-back role. The Romanian is installed on the left and offers a route to Big Sam’s defence for just 4.5. He’s now started the last five and looks set to earn significant interest following today’s returns given the Hammers forthcoming schedule.

The Selection Poser

The Spurs midfield continues to cause concern for Fantasy managers, with Andre Villas-Boas today introducing Aaron Lennon into the mix. Having dropped Christian Eriksen to the bench at Villa last weekend, today it was the turn of Gylfi Sigurdsson to make way as Lennon took up the left flank role.

With Eriksen benched again, only seeing action with thirty minutes remaining, it’s rapidly becoming clear that our options in Tottenham’s engine room are limited to Paulinho and the emerging Andros Townsend. Both saw 90 minutes in the win over the Tigers, although Townsend was fortunate to end the match having been knocked unconscious after falling into the White Hart Lane crowd.

With Eriksen’s ownership plummeting following his recent relegation, it now looks set to be Sigurdsson’s turn to suffer losses – the Icelandic international is owned by almost 10% of FPL managers, having enjoyed a spurt of investment following a 16-point haul in Gameweek 4.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Seeing quite a few people WC this week is interesting. Being one of the few people with WC remaining (at this point, I only know Sheikh Emir who has a WC remaining), I admit I'm concerned.

So, needing some reassurance, I went and had a look at the potential DGW36 fixtures (basically GW34 + GW36) due to FA Cup Semifinals. Not too shabby.

DGW36 is too late to play the WC imo. Better invest it during another int break, or use it when your team face a serious injury/playing-time nightmare.

decent point. But somebody told me about a strategy of getting a big TV for the first half of season, and use it to get a great team for the later half and it actually paid off. I'm sure a WC need to be played early to achieve that.

Why I can't drop Giroud yet

Giroud historically does far better in his 2nd year at a club as he embraces the club's system.

Follow the pattern and see if you can guess this year's totals for Giroud.

Last season Giroud had 11 goals and 5 assists.

Giroud had 21 goals and 12 assists 2011/12, his last season in Ligue 1, his 2nd at Montpelier:
    http://www.transfermarkt.com/en/olivier-giroud/leistungsdaten/spieler_82442_2011.html

In his first year at Montpelier in 10/11, he had 12 goals & 5 assists.

In 2009/10, Giroud had 21 goals and 7 assist in his 2nd season at Ligue 2 club Tours:
    http://www.transfermarkt.com/en/olivier-giroud/leistungsdaten/spieler_82442_2009.html

In his first year at Tours in 08/09 he had 9 goals & 2 assists.

Fair dues although you can't quite compare the competitiveness of the PL and Ligue 1.

Also believe if Arsenal are to challenge for the title, they will need to go shopping for a better striker in Jan.

I don't understand this thinking that Arsenal need a different striker.

As Wenger said before buying Ozil, its not about getting good players, its about getting the right players. Giroud fits the system. He does his share of ping-pong Arsenal passing, he unselfishly assists, and he leads the line to chip in crosses. What else does Wenger need there?

If anything, Arsenal need a better goalkeeper, and better quality on their bench.

As for comparing the PL and Ligue 1, I agree. But he wasn't at PSG exactly either. And, he is on track one quarter way through the season to meet his past season 2 tallies.

He has his positives of course but it doesn't change that he's still a donkey in front of goal squandering lots of good chances. Done a great job for Arsenal in this season so far, but will it sustain? Also been playing a lot, so they definitely need a good back-up striker for sure.

You can easily say from my views though that I'm biased. I am, don't rate him and never owned him on FPL.

Giroud is a great player but imo he is getting the big share of FPL points due to one big factor : No Walcott. When the speedster returns, i expect a turn in his FPL fortune as there'll be another beneficiary of Ramsey's form and "the world's best No. 10"'s genius play.

    A. Koscielny OUT, terry/ivanovic IN (0.0 left)
    B. Koscielny OUT, Reid/pieters IN (1.4 left)

Whoever comes in will start basically every week for the next month at least. Option B leaves money to go towards bringing aguero in for giroud.

    Mignolet
    Chico - Koscielny - Walker
    Michu - Ozil - Barkley - Oscar
    Lukaku - Suarez - Giroud

    (Lewis - RavMo - B. Turner - Chester)

Players who score 2 or more goals one week rarely do it the following week, but it certainly happens. Notably, scoring 2 or more goals 5 times during the season was tops last year (if that holds this year, Suarez and Aguero have only 3 multiple goal games left in them - goofy thought, I know, but food for thought)

Last year's stats (player & game weeks when they scored 2 or more goals)
          Suarez: 6, 12, 20, 21 & 28
          RVP: 3, 21, 34
          Rooney: 8, 15, 16, 24
          Michu: 1, 15, 16, 26
          Benteke: 17, 25, 35
          Lukaku: 22, 27, 38

Who to take out of my team ?

    A) Migs
    B) Michu
    C) Giroud
    Any potential replacements?
currently favouring Giroud to Aguero. but have a feeling giroud will score again against Liverpool & Man Utd.

Fair. Though Mutch at 4.4 might make an enabler. He's 5.5k in this round, though... how to see where/when players jump? I saw someone talk about Kun at 96% of a .1 increase earlier... is that onsite?

Bank 2.2m, 2 free transfers. Think I'm down to either of these - whatcha reckon?

    A) Sturridge -> Aguero
    B) Giroud -> Aguero

If I do A) then I'll most likely do Giroud -> Benteke the week after. If not then I've no idea where to use either of my free transfers next week:

    Boruc
    Baines, Terry, Clyne
    Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas, Ravel
    Suarez, Sturridge, Giroud

      A but it's strange move, i know.

Your 2.2 should be invested to Mirallas. Don't think he's explosive/consistent enough to be played everyweek at 7.2m. Great fix/differential, i know, but monitor Silva/CHE mids or even Wally for that spot.

The only time i'd sanction a move like that is if a person has 2 FTs and no other worries.. You seem to follow that criteria(Nolan can be dealt with next week). A) for me.. Giroud @ 8.5 is bargain of the season material

Am I mad thinking of downgrading Baines to A. Williams this week for a hit.

    Everton next 6 = Tot (h), Crys (a), Liv (h), Stoke (h), MU (a), Ars (h)
    Swansea next 6 = Car (a), Stoke (h), Ful (a), MCI (a), New (h), Hull (h)

Swansea's points seem to be in defence until their attack starts firing. I've read the arguments re Baines & how you should hold him for the season but Williams should outscore him over the next 6 games. I can see Williams getting at least 3-4 cs in this period & Baines maybe 1 cs. I know Baines has that attacking threat but bp's seem to favour central defenders so far this season. Also if I do the trade it will result in a healthy bank balance of 3.1m allowing me to bring in a mf gun when the mf's start firing.

    Opinions appreciated.

Baines is seemingly an anomaly with Bonus Points though. He's picked up a fair few despite not being the centre back. Lots of passing I think through him. Plus naturally his goals.

Yeah I see what you mean. Baines has scored 10 bp's from gw's 2 to 5 but no bp's since gw6. Any reason he's only scored 8 points since gw6? A lot of people are selling him so are they seeing something I'm not.

I think it's price related. Think they want to free up cash to bring in Suarez and Aguero. Baines is a pretty hefty price and for that he needs to deliver. Also, Everton don't look like they'll keep many cleanies and don't exactly have an easy run in til January. Saying that, they'll all rush to get him back if he bags a couple of goals.

Granted, Baines is a very frustrating player to own...

i'd stick tbh.. Michu may not be scoring but has been playin well(apart from last night where he obviously knackered), while Barkley has TOT cpl LIV STK. no need to remove just yet

Is Rosenior nailed on? Worth it as a cheap 5th defender?

    Morning guys..
Finally West Ham's defense been highlighted. Reid as been a legend for me. 5 CS's and a goal plus a run of 5 good fixtures in the next 7. lovely

Suarez Giroud and Lukaku will do the job for you in the medium-long term.. Dont chase single GW points. maybe its the many times aguero has burnt me over the past 2 and a half seasons that is blindin me though.

I wouldn't drop any of that front 3 for Aguero though. But if you must, definitely Giroud purely because of fixtures. Lukaku will trickle points in over the season, keeper for me.

Vidic to Williams would be a good use of FT imo

    Aguero in for sturridge?

I think pelligrini will have to field him if he wants a chance at the cup

Having a real sub-par season and need some help badly!!
    Currently 600+k in the world..

    Mignolet (Steer)
    Chico Coleman Shaw (Wilson Chester)
    Ravel Whittingham Silva Ozil (Ramires)
    Rvp Giroud Sturridge

What should i do? I'm thinking of replacing Wilson and Giroud with a Villa defender and Benteke

      Ramires from Chelsea?

      Time to sell if yes.

Someone you can rotate with. Brady or Hernandez perhaps. West Ham defender looks better as suggested below.

I had brady but due to his injury i took him out. Planning to play 3 strikers each week. So should i keep Giroud for another week?

I think Giroud will have 2 quiet weeks. I am probably getting rid.

I'm short on .5m for the change. Would be short of .2m if i sell giroud for benteke also. Tomkins nailed on?

Tomkins has a greater goal threat as the article says, Tomkins if you have the funds.
