The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

A goalscoring legend rolls back the years to put in a match winning shift that pockets him a double figure Fantasy haul. Elsewhere, West Ham’s resilience is on show to tempt our belated investment, while down at the Lane, Tottenham’s midfield personnel remain in flux as another popular target finds himself on the timber.

The Game Changer

In a season seemingly crowded by prolific, stand-out options in attack, it’s perhaps ironic that Fernando Torres should, at last, show a glimmer of former glories.

Today’s goal and assist returns in the dramatic win over City saw Torres deliver on the promise he had previously shown in recent matches. More significantly, his performance seemed to demonstrate a new hunger and confidence coursing through his veins as, time and time again, he took it upon himself to stretch the City backline with positive movement and surges between defenders. All this following a glaring miss that typified his previous displays at the Bridge.

It would be premature and foolish to announce that Torres is back but, having impressed in matches at Spurs and in the Champions League, the former Liverpool striker is beginning to chain together convincing performances. Today he capped it with Fantasy returns – a double figure haul no less.

As Chelsea’s expensive midfield options – Oscar and Eden Hazard – drew a blank, Torres is perhaps unlucky to find our forward lines so fully booked by other in-from options. It seems unlikely that Fantasy attention will come his way in the current landscape, but there’s little doubt that Torres’ form at least warrants our attention and recognition.

The Underused

Despite earning a fifth clean sheet of the season at the Liberty stadium today, West Ham’s defence remains largely ignored by Fantasy managers.

With under 6% ownership, keeper Jussi Jääskeläinen is the most popular member of Sam Allardyce’s resolute rearguard. While his 5.5 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag is perhaps an obstacle given the value offered by Southampton’s Artur Boruc, in front of him we have a cast to choose from across the price brackets.

Winston Reid is perhaps the jewel in the crown – a dominant centre-back of some standing, he already has a league goal to his name and top scores for Bonus Point System (BPS) points with 52. Below him, we find James Tomkins, a relatively new option having earned a recall in place of former favourte James Collins. Priced at 4.7, Tomkins arguably has a greater goal threat than Reid and is just as capable of earning bonus points given his aerial presence.

At the lower end of the scale, Razvan Rat now looks assured of starts as Joey O’Brien and Guy Demel battle for the right-back role. The Romanian is installed on the left and offers a route to Big Sam’s defence for just 4.5. He’s now started the last five and looks set to earn significant interest following today’s returns given the Hammers forthcoming schedule.

The Selection Poser

The Spurs midfield continues to cause concern for Fantasy managers, with Andre Villas-Boas today introducing Aaron Lennon into the mix. Having dropped Christian Eriksen to the bench at Villa last weekend, today it was the turn of Gylfi Sigurdsson to make way as Lennon took up the left flank role.

With Eriksen benched again, only seeing action with thirty minutes remaining, it’s rapidly becoming clear that our options in Tottenham’s engine room are limited to Paulinho and the emerging Andros Townsend. Both saw 90 minutes in the win over the Tigers, although Townsend was fortunate to end the match having been knocked unconscious after falling into the White Hart Lane crowd.

With Eriksen’s ownership plummeting following his recent relegation, it now looks set to be Sigurdsson’s turn to suffer losses – the Icelandic international is owned by almost 10% of FPL managers, having enjoyed a spurt of investment following a 16-point haul in Gameweek 4.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Pick 2 from Brady (SUN) , Townsend (eve), Ramsey (LIV)

Seeing as I have Ozil, I'm tempted to bench Ramsey.

Last time I benched him was Swansea away 🙂

I feel away from home though Townsend is more likely to get points, as Everton in particular aren't going to sit back.

Also have Johnson and Mignolet so I'd be strongly backing Liverpool in that sense

Very glad I have Dawson & Clyne. Normally pick Coleman as my 3rd defender & I'm set.

The top 2 with probably dry up due to harder fixtures & having an easy run for the 1st 9 GWs.

      Good post.

Since I will likely be starting Baines & Terry every week, and I don't really ever want to be starting Ward, I kind of need my other 2 cheapish defenders to rotate well. Unfortunately Toure and Clyne rotate terribly, so is it worth doing Toure -> a 5.4m or less defender this week for free?

Thinking Kos could be the best bet?

    Boruc, Davis
    Baines, Terry, Toure, Clyne, Ward
    Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas, Nolan, Ravel
    Suarez, Sturridge, Giroud

Bank 2.2m, 2 freebies (Sturridge -> Aguero will be the first freebie used)

I try not to look too far ahead as injuries/suspensions etc often get in the way, but looking at the next 4 weeks I'd definitely want to bench Clyne for GW12 & GW13, and Kos has (car,HUL) for those 2, which is pretty decent I think.

Kneejerked and took an 8 point hit.

But at least I'm reasonably happy with my team after a horrible Mark-esque Wildcard earlier (including a midfield of Ben Arfa, Moses, Eriksen, Michu and Jedinak.

    Present team:

    Migs (Davis)
    Terry-Williams-Coleman (Burner-Chester)
    Michu-Ramires-Mirallas-Ramsey (Jedinak)
    Suarez-Aguero-Rooney

    Did Eriksen/Vidic/Giroud => Ramsey/Williams/Aguero.

Probably stupid, but I got so fed up with my team that at least I can relax a little for a while.

How long will those getting Aguero keep him for?

If I get him, I may only keep for 2 weeks. Too short sighted?

Not if there's nothing more pressing. Mind you he has 2 home games following Sunderland (a) so you may want to keep if he performs in the next 2 anyway.

I'll just see how he goes. A direct swap for Rooney in gw14 is a possibility, depending on form and injuries.

Interesting fact. Swansea have kept a clean sheet in every game so far they haven't played on of the leagues top teams (Arsenal Liverpool Manchester Tottenham) except for Soton who are doing really great. Swansea defender a must for the next 3.

    So Williams or Chico?

Chico if you can afford the measly 0.2.

        Why?
Williams will probably get more BAPS then Chico (Chico has got only 1 bap this season when both of them have been on the pitch, whilst Williams has got 6 + both have scored 0 goals and provided 0 assists last season). As for pitch time, Williams has played 3300 minutes last season and has the armband

I got 99 problems but Vidic ain't one....

Did Vidic to Rangel and Giroud to Aguero.

Next week Sturridge to Suarez for the Aguero, Rooney, Sturridge front 3.....has to be the best frontline right?

Rvp benteke have something to say to the above statement,
Not to mention Sturridge lukaku and giroud did very well so far.

So it boils down to this

1 Ramsey and giroud both stay, no good captain choice this week, save a transfer
2 use the free transfer for giroud out aguero (c) in
3 take a hit to get both Ramsey and giroud out and bring silva and benteke.

    Torn.

What position does Williams play in? I thought he was a right back. He got 3 baps twice for 3 CSs where he started. With baps system favoring CBs, how come hes getting them when he doesn't score or assist?

    sturridge vs suarez

after this weekend is suarez the must have of the two? or do you think sturridge can match his returns?

and how comfortable would you feel captaining sturridge vs how comfortable captaining suarez? for example this week I wasn't so comfortable captaining sturridge but if I'd had suarez I might have put the armband on him

Not sure this GWs hattrick changes anything for me. I'd prefer Suarez, but not sure I'm doing Sturridge -> Suarez as I have other priorities than getting rid of a striker who has scored 8 goals in 9 games.

Morning guys! My team looks like this:

    Vorm, Stekelenburg
    Coleman, Mertesacker, Terry, Amorebieta, Shaw
    Eriksen, Barkley, Ramsey, Oscar, Michu
    Soldado, Sturridge, Giroud

    Would you wildcard this lot?
Or should I just stick to my plan and get rid of Soldado and Eriksen -> Brady and Aguero. Thanks in advance!
