The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

Saturday’s events were dominated by Manchester City’s seven-goal haul as they destroyed a hapless Norwich City at the Etihad. With the points still being calculated and the performances still fresh in our mind, Manuel Pellegrini’s side dominate our early Gameweek thinking…

The Game Changer

Red hot form, top of the Captain Poll, the most transferred in player ahead of the Gameweek. The scene was set for Sergio Aguero to deliver and he didn’t disappoint. Those who took a hit to bring in the Argentine must be delighted – his 15-point return, with maximum bonus surely to follow, offered a handsome pay-off.

As we’ve written on these pages in recent weeks – Aguero has built a case to be considered “essential” even before today’s performance against Norwich. Looking at his numbers now, the lure to invest in Aguero is almost overwhelming.

He’s now scored in his last five league starts – collecting seven goals and five assists in that devastating spell. That’s seen Aguero hit the top of the overall FPL rankings and, even in a season where a case of heavy-hitting strikers have performed, he’s become difficult to ignore.

The threat of rotation and Aguero’s propensity to suffer injury provide the caveats. While City’s Champions League campaign and Manuel Pellegrini’s options in Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic cause some concern, it should be noted that Aguero has only failed to start one match when fully fit – the trip to Stoke City in Gameweek 4. Having dropped points at the Britannia, we have to wonder if Pellegrini has had a rethink when it comes to his prolific marksman. There’s little doubt that he has now become central to their title ambitions.

Certainly the argument that Aguero is a rotation risk is becoming increasingly muted as it continues to be drowned out by a torrent of goals and assists.

The Underused

With our forward lines packed with quality, there is an understandable reluctance to jump on Aguero’s form. While today’s returns made that stance harder to justify, the David Silva option in midfield does at least present another route to attempt to cover City’s unquenchable thirst for goals.

Silva’s ownership still sits at just 6% tonight and yet his 8-point return, with perhaps bonus points to follow, will mean that the Spaniard has shown strong consistency. He’s now returned goals or assists in five of his seven league appearances, while bonus points tonight would see him challenge at the top of the current midfield form rankings.

Yaya Toure’s huge ownership is perhaps the reason behind the reluctance to adopt Silva as a midfield option. Another set-piece goal for the Ivorian today will likely see his owners keep the faith, however, there is a strong argument to say that Silva, a cheaper alternative to Toure, will eventually surpass his team-mate’s points tally. Toure has relied on goals from three stunning free-kicks this season, whilst Silva is everywhere, providing incisive passes in the attacking third and a good level of efforts on goal from open play.

While the floodgates remain wide open for Pellegrini’s attack-minded outfit, Silva’s consistent supply of points looks assured.

The Selection Poser

Sticking with Pellegrini’s side, his decision to drop Joe Hart to the bench and retain Costel Pantilimon in goal has given Fantasy managers food for thought. Hart has never been a major temptation given his price point but Pantilimon is a different matter. At just 4.9, the Romanian would provide the cheapest route into the City back four from here on in.

Today’s clean sheet was the first since Gameweek 4 but, with the fixture list improving and with City well capable of dominating matches and starving opponents of possession, they may now be a case to consider their rearguard with a sub 5.0 FPL asset on offer. The issue, of course, is just how long Pellegrini will keep faith with Pantilimon given that, in World Cup year, he will be under pressure to recall Hart to the City goal.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not copping another 0.1 on Silva. The plan was always to bring him in for Michu this week.

You reckon? I still think he'll do enough to justify his price tag but I guess we've reached the point where we're trying to score max points from our 3 striker spots and forgetting about midfield.

everyone's in a huff to get suarez and aguero

third striker is either rooney for those going all out on strikers
OR they're getting either benteke or lukaku for a budget third striker

giroud and sturridge are around 40% ownership and in no man's land as consistent performers, but not doing the astounding of aguero/suarez, and no longer budget

thus, ships to be abandoned for now... and once casuals see prices falling they'll scamper out like a pack of locusts

I think with the return of Walcott & Cazorla we will see Ramsey's offensive production suffer.

I don't know if he'll be able to get forward as much...

This isn't to say he isn't worth 7mil but, more that his current offensive output will fall off.

What are your transfers going to be? Pull some money from your defence to upgrade Giroud/Studge? Suarez is the best C option next GW imo.

rooney and rvp just beginning to strike a partnership and people shipping.

Crazy! Remember these guys have hardly played together, last season rooney was more withdrawn in games and played either midfield or behind rvp

Rooney this season is playing alongside rvp. It didn't really work the first 5-6 gw's as rvp seemed to be injured alot of the time or had a knock. Also it took them a few games to really get used to playing up front together (remember rvp is used to playing as main striker on his own majority of his career).

However it seems now the partnership is beginning to take off. The two are beginning to link up, the understanding is growing and the last 2 games in particular has shown this (with results).

My advice is to keep rooney if you have him. The partnership is at an early stage, it is only going to get better and more ruthless

interesting. I think a great partnership also brings assists though which is good for fpl.

Rooney and rvp were not a partnership last season technically though were they? Rooney playing behind rvp, he is now playing alongside him which makes them deadly.

In terms of FPL it means they will share points in my personal opinion, unless one side becomes more dominant. Like Suarez is in the SAS. They will be decent, but I think there wont be too many goals. I mean for example today both only had 1 shot on target vs a poor Fulham side

I agree that the changes made it difficult for them. But still, I think Roo will get like 16 goals 8-10 ast this season, great but I think we need to time owning him for specific runs

it is crazy bemba i agree, but this season is ludicrous, ive never seen a patient gameplay strategy go more unrewarded, whilest kneejerkin and buyin last weeks points seems to be a viable one

i was tellin all that itd be madness to sell studge last week given his form this season, but studge to aguero couldnt have paid off more as a transfer, and now im joinin em cos i can miss out and drop further behind.... 🙁

lamela won't play in away game to everton. He is most likely to start an easy on paper home game. Maybe he will play all of the remaining league cup.

I think so much chopping and changing in spurs mid doesn't help. AVB is still trying to understand what his best team is though.

He needs to probably give townsend a rest

True. Even though he's a defensive mid if he started further forward he's much more skilful than and has more scoring threat than the likes of Eriksen and Lamela and even Soldado. AVB nearly has too many options in attack. Siggurdson, Holtby, Defoie, Adebayor would get into most other 11s.

wont work.Theyve tried that both in corinthians and national brasilian team.he didnt perform well. he eve n said so. he needs to be 2nd defensiv mid because his whole thing is the surprise attack not common for def mis.
avb HAS to put dembele/sandro + paulinho - townsend, eriksen, lamela - soldado...bench sigur, lennon, defoe etc...and play this untill they get it right.

    don't understand people shipping ozil

he's the new fabregas of fpl, will continue to contribute near 20 point hauls because of his world class passing

no other midfielder in the pl is close to the assist threat he is

as time goes on and he adapts to arsenal and the pl, he will only improve

ramsey owners shouldn't be so comfortable

He's not the new Fabregas. Doesn't have his work rate, more importantly doesn't score same amount of goals. Assist pts same for all players but midfield goals are a big plus like Michu last season. Good option, bit pricey though.

Giroud was always going to go (because of my plan of having Ramsey, Walcott and Ozil) but it was going to be for Bentetke/Lukaku instead.
