The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

Another Anfield rout brings has a certain Uruguayan hogging the headlines again, whilst Brendan Rodgers teamsheet gives cause for a re-think when assessing his defensive assets. Meanwhile, at St Mary’s, Southampton’s blossoming form continues as they move to third, inspired by skipper Adam Lallana and a striker scrapping for World Cup recognition.

The Game Changer

The march of Luis Suarez seems unrelenting. Following the blank at Arsenal last time out, the Uruguayan returned to the scoresheet, notching a brace as Liverpool scored four for the second home match in succession.

The overwhelming favourite in our Captain Poll going into the Gameweek, Suarez repaid his Fantasy owners with another double figure haul and, with maximum bonus surely to follow, he will have registered 64 points in his six appearances since returning from suspension.

The Emirates blank has been the only blot in the copybook for Suarez, who has either scored or assisted in every other outing this season. Once again, he left Daniel Sturridge in his wake to well and truly banish any suggestion that the England striker can keep pace. The 1.8 gap between the two players is substantial but, given the consistency being shown by Suarez, his value as a recipient of the armband seems to justify the outlay.

Suarez now departs for Uruguay’s World Cup play-off with Jordan to return to league action for the Merseyside derby in a fortnight. While injury and fatigue could well be factors between now and that testing fixture, it seems unlikely to perturb would-be investors who will be drawn to Suarez in their droves, attracted by yet another bumper return.

The Underused

Rickie Lambert’s goal and brace of assists not only made a significant contribution to Southampton’s fine 4-1 win over Hull City, it meant that the World Cup hopeful has now notched in three of his last four home matches.

From nowhere, Lambert has edged his way back onto the Fantasy radar having recorded a second double figure return in the space of three Gameweeks.

Four goals and three assists are moderate season returns in the current climate where the top Fantasy strikers are promising goal-a-game returns. Even so, Lambert is priced at just 7.2 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and appears to be finding the form that will give him every chance of earning a spot on the plane to Rio, whilst perhaps even offering Fantasy managers a potential differential as we search for methods to break the current template.

With Romelu Lukaku recording a third blank in five league outings, we could yet see some traffic heading Lambert’s way following today’s returns.

The Selection Poser

The re-introduction of Philippe Coutinho to the Liverpool starting XI proved the catalyst for Brendan Rodgers to change his formation. A standard 4-4-2 was deployed, with Coutinho taking up a role on the left but given license to tuck inside. In defence, we saw Glen Johnson return at right-back after his absence at the Emirates but, more significantly, Dan Agger was reinstated in the centre, alongside Martin Skrtel. That meant no place for either Mamadou Sakho or Kolo Toure – the latter was missing from the matchday squad.

Toure is owned by almost 8% of Fantasy Premier League managers and, at just 5.0, was designated as the most favoured route into the Liverpool defence after keeper Simon Mignolet. The Ivorian now appears to face a major task to earn a recall to displace the Skrtel/Agger partnership, particularly with Sakho in the reckoning.

While most Fantasy managers will be focused on Liverpool’s attacking returns, today’s clean sheet could well be the sign of things to come. Although they conceded in their last home match, that was down to a dubious penalty against West Brom and with Norwich, West Ham and Cardiff the next three teams to visit Merseyside, the Liverpool back four could yet prove profitable for investors.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Prioritise the players you need. Aguero for starters. You might have to go Walker and Luk for Rat/Vlaar and Ag.

Completely disagree. In fact I couldn't disagree more. This season it has all been about captaining the big strikers. Aguero, Suarez, Sturridge, Giroud, Rooney. Cheap midfielders have scores as well as expensive ones. The main thing to have at the moment is the 3 strikers you own.

Kim and Toure -> Ravel and Johnson (if you cant afford Johnson look at Chicares, Evans, Rat, Williams, Vlaar)

      Nope.
Ramsey, Aguero, Suarez, Rooney are very solid picks
Boruc is a fine keeper, even with the fixtures
Coleman is okay - Everton doing well at the back
Oscar I've never been big on but hey he's not a bad pick
Townsend could yet come through - not a bad pick
Assuming Janujaz keeps his starts he's a good pick
Chester will be back soon and best at his price

In my eyes, only Toure, Ivanovic, Kim, Foster NEED to go. Kim and Foster are easily benched.

Olson looks fairly nailed on. I had in my team on week 1 and it took me a long time to lose him. He isn't as attacking at full back as I expected. I think there are better options in that budget...BTurner, Rosenoir, Baker ir for a little more Vlaar, Rat.

Doesn't that indicate that he isn't a good finisher? I bought him earlier in the season after watching him against Stoke. He was brilliant, all over the pitch, involved in everything and I thought he was unlucky to be out the points. But that just seems to be him in every game. Just my opinion though.

I think Hazard and Oscar both are good picks. Whatever we score, they probably have a hand in it. Though yes, the stats favour Hazard (more shots and key passes than Oscar) and him being on penalties when Lampard isn't on, its worth going for Hazard over him.

As for Coutinho, too many shots already, not a single goal registered. I don't know what's wrong with him in that area.

I agree with Santi being an option. Ozil is very over priced and is worth getting at £9.5m but Santi would be a good pick at £9m. I think Walcott back will definitely be the way to go.

All my defenders have terrible fixtures/injury doubts next GW. Pick 3 from:

Toure (eve), Shaw (ars), Coleman (LIV), Murner (new), Dawson (mci)

OR take a -4 to get Toure out, and if so who for?

My tale of woe in this week's decisions is a sad one.
It started with picking the wrong side of the Oscar/Hazard toin coss when I shipped Michu out.
Followed up with captaining Sturridge over Aguero for a correctly anticipated destruction of Fulham (albeit not featuring my part of the SaS)
And to put a cherry on top, there's the much considered decision to leave out Coleman for Barkley in anticipation of an open goal-fest at Palace...sigh.

Coulda been 16 points better off and looking forward to another City goal avalanche today
As it is I'm stuck on 29 and praying on Ramsey, Vertonghen and Ageuro to deliver some sort of respectability.

Sometimes I hate this bloody game.

I need funds for Sturridge to Aguero,
    Which is best?

    A) Migs to Myhill (have Boruc)
    B) Barkley to Ward-Prowse (for the bench)

    Other forwards Suarez & Rooney.

Man Utd's next 10 games are rather tasty. All 'Blue' on the ticker save home and away fixtures against Spurs (who don't exactly have a good record at Trafford, so that's a blue too for me).

car, tot, EVE, NEW, avl, WHM, hul, nor, TOT, SWA

Southampton (and to a lesser degree Swansea) are basically the opposite.

ars, che, AVL, MCI, new, TOT, car, eve, CHE, WBA

I have Boruc, Clyne and Chico going into this stretch (with Coleman, Faye and Murner), so as my thoughts turn to clean sheets over the winter I'm looking wistfully toward Man U defenders. I pinned a lot on Vidic at the beginning of the season and was disappointed with constant yellow, red flag and 2pt appearances.

So, who to consider? Is Evra the only player that can be nailed into the back 4 with 100% games started but is pretty expensive (I've .5m in the bank). Vidic - been absolutely riddled by injury. Evans also injury prone as is Jones - and both look overpriced compared to the likes of Glenn Johnson / Skrtel / Enrique...? (pretty good Liverpool fixtures coming up too)

    Thoughts?

I also have Boruc, Clyne and Chico, but I haven't been considering their defence really. It has no preferred CB pairing, and that is no good for clean sheets IMO. I was thinking about maybe just doing Clyne to Rat.

I have taken the gamble last game week and brought Evans in. I agree about the fixtures looking good and them being the way to go. Evans had started the previous 3 in a row. The rumour was\is that Evans is 1st choice centre back. If that turns out to be correct then £5m is an absolute bargain. Think the key is having a decent back up defender.
