The Digest – Gameweek 12

We take one last look at Gameweek 12 to hail the impact of Manuel Pellegrini on a certain Argentine. Palace’s recent resilience may be boosted by the arrival of Stoke’s former boss, whilst the captaincy issue in any given Gameweek seems to be whittled down to one of two South Americans:

The Player

Faced with the Premier League’s most resilient away defence last weekend, Sergio Aguero once again served up a huge Fantasy haul as City humiliated Spurs at the Etihad. While they’d put seven past Norwich in the previous home encounter, the visit of Andre Villas-Boas’ side seemed a different proposition, with Tottenham conceding a single goal on their travels prior to last Sunday.

The absence of David Silva made little difference to the hosts as Aguero tore apart the visitors’ backline, with a brace and assist in the 6-0 demolition helping him to 15 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points; his fifth set of double figures in 10 league starts.

Now up to 99 points for the campaign, Aguero’s prospects have been re-ignited by the arrival of both Pellegrini and Alvaro Negredo – a player his manager has described as “the perfect player for the Premier League”.

Incredibly, City have now scored more goals (26) at home than any side has managed in total and while their toils on the road may affect their title aspirations, Aguero’s form remains consistent, having produced the points in three of his four starts on the road. With 12 strikes and eight assists to his name already, the Argentine has already played a part in more goals than over the entire 2012/13 campaign under Roberto Mancini (12 goals, three assists) and with Pellegrini determined to go on the offensive, Aguero’s pivotal role in one of the most potent top-flight attacks we’ve seen for some time looks a gift-wrapped present for Fantasy managers as the season unfolds.

The Team

New boss Tony Pulis arrives at Palace in the perfect moment. Having leaked goals in each of their first 10 league matches, the Eagles’ ship has been steadied by caretaker boss Keith Millen, who has engineered back-to-back clean sheets against Everton and Hull, with a narrow win at the KC helping them climb off the foot of the table.

In his first match in charge, Pulis rolls up to injury-hit Norwich, with playmaker Robert Snodgrass and big-money forward Ricky Van Wolfswinkel both consigned to the treatment room . After that, it’s three matches in four at Selhurst Park (WHM, CAR, che, NEW) as Pulis looks to instill the resilience that helped the Potters to 30 clean sheets in the previous three seasons.

Certainly, judging by his time at the Britannia, we won’t be expecting a free-flowing brand of football – Pulis, essentially, is the anti-Pellegrini, and will be charged with no more than ensuring top-flight survival at whatever cost. If he can build on the defensive stability introduced by Millen, Pulis may yet bring Palace’s backline options into consideration – indeed, with a run of seven home games that reads (WHM, CAR, NEW, NOR, STO, HUL, WBA) he could hardly ask for a better chance to make Selhurst Park a fortress. With Julian Speroni at 4.5 in FPL and Danny Gabbidon, Joel Ward and Dean Moxey all just 4.0, there are budget options aplenty should the former Britannia boss make his mark.

The Talking Point

Aguero’s stunning haul against Tottenham kept Luis Suarez in the shade for once but the Uruguayan was also in the points, with a goal and assist in the Merseyside derby ensuring his incredible tally ticked over. While we saw a number of popular frontline options rack up the returns this week, with Romelu Lukaku, Olivier Giroud and Wayne Rooney all returning double figures, the explosive consistency of Suarez and Aguero is leaving the rest standing.

Since the Liverpool forward returned from suspension in Gameweek 6, the highest haul delivered from a Suarez-Aguero partnership over the subsequent seven fixtures has been (13, 7, 16, 17, 18, 16, 15) – right now, they are almost limiting the captaincy call down to just two players in any given Gameweek. Impressively, given that Aguero was sidelined for Gameweek 6, this means that he’s outscored Suarez in four of the six league fixtures he’s been available for since the Uruguayan’s return.

Indeed, despite the fact that Rooney has registered three sets of double figures in the last four (12, 12, 4, 11), it almost seems a gamble not to have the armband on either Suarez or Aguero at any point. The United frontman has averaged an impressive seven points per game this term, yet this still pales into insignificance against the South American duo – Suarez has managed 10.4, while Aguero has delivered nine ppg.

Whilst the likes of Lukaku, with seven goals and an assist in eight appearances for Everton, and Loic Remy, with eight strikes in nine starts for Newcastle, have more than delivered during their loan spells, no one can get near Suarez and Aguero right now. With Liverpool travelling to Hull this Sunday and Aguero welcoming Swansea to the Etihad, both look poised to deliver big time yet again – those managers bold enough to roll into the weekend without one or both in their front three face an uncomfortable couple of days.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    RMT GW13:

    Migs
    Terry | Coleman | Vlaar
    Redmond | Gerrard | Oscar | Ramsey
    Aguero(c) | Suarez | Lukaku

    Bench: Boruc, Brady, Chico, Chester
    0.2m in bank.

Have 1FT, but am thinking if I should save it since we have an upcoming mid week Game Week.

Would it be better to have 2FT to spend between Saturday and Wednesday? Or is there an improvement I can do in my team at the moment?

I need a little help on a transfer decision I've been struggling with all week...

I've already used 1FT this week doing Baines > Mertesacker...

I've decided to use the other FT to downgrade Ozil... and might take a hit to upgrade Brady as well...

I will eventually be getting Walcott just as soon as he is starting games and scoring, but the thing is I don't want to make the switch until I know for sure he's starting and on form...

So with that in mind, I'm thinking about Ozil > Oscar this week, to take advantage of a few good Chelsea fixtures, then switch to Walcott later on (probably GW18)

Making that switch allows me to upgrade Brady to an 8.5m mid, and I'm thinking Coutinho...

So essentially it's Ozil & Brady > Oscar & Coutinho (-4) giving me...

      Migs
      Mertesacker Terry M.Turner (Clyne B.Turner)
      Oscar Coutinho Ramsey Barkley (Januzaj)
      Rooney Suarez Aguero

Would make those moves or would you keep Ozil and/or Brady?

      Thanks

            you're a rich manager..... 🙂
I'd keep Ozil for now.... wish I had him 🙁 .... u can take sess.... he was fool not to score a couple last week... my only fear is, Steve Clarke may not give him a start.. otherwise he's good to give you 8 points at least...

I'm not sure why since I haven't been chasing price rises this year... been making my transfers later in the week recently... only have 106m in TV...

I guess I'm not doing too badly if I can afford 2 premium defenders, 2 premium mids and Rooney/Suarez/Aguero, mind you I expect most guys on here will be able to afford a team like that quite easily...

Sess looks OK, but I'm not that convinced by him tbh...

              Thanks

It just feels like the wrong time to make any changes... The only midfielder I'd be eager to get into my side is Walcott, and he's not 100% yet. Ozil is on pens if Arteta is out...

        Honestly, I think I'd save.

      Mignolet / Lewis

I'm slightly concerned that he is on the suspension tightrope myself, and I already have Rooney, Barkley and M.Turner as well on 4 YCs, so that's why I haven't gone for him...

But he is the best 5th mid around IMO, and he will have plenty of joy on the flanks against Fulham...

Good move if he can avoid a booking...

Sort wilson out. I did last week for Mert. Got lucky...but pretty much anyone is better than Wilson right now. Also with rotation looming over Christmas you will need a playing bench.

Also spurs have a terrible fixture as do Cardiff defensively...that leaves you a defender short this week.

Rest all looks pretty good...brady might be worth keeping an eye on.

        reposting this with revised timeline

        Last night I took this:
        Migs, Lewis
        Clyne, Rosenior, Coleman, Burner, Rat
        Ravel, Hazard, Gerrard, Januzaj, Ramsey
        Suarez, Aguero, Rooney

        and did:
Rooney -> Lukaku and Rosenior -> Terry

next week I plan on doing:
Gerrard -> Lallana and Burner -> GJ

and then the week after that do Ramsey -> Walcott and Januzaj -> Barkley (hopefully, may be just shy of enough cash by then if any of the 4 players go up too much)

in the end, hopefully leaving me going into GW 15 with a team of:

        Migs, Lewis
        Clyne, Terry, Coleman, GJ, Rat
        Ravel, Hazard, Lallana, Brady, Walcott
        Suarez, Aguero, Lukaku

look good? I like the look of it..by the time I have this team, it will only be the first week of December..can then stick for GW16 and start to save my extra FT for luxury or emergencies

Difficult one. I would have said Sess until that shocking performance on Monday. Probably would still say Sess though. He gets in more advanced positions.

He'd be brilliant if he played in his preferred role. With Lowton fit i thought that would happen but Lambert seems to favour him at right back for some reason.

Still good value, but he could have been incredible as a right winger on set pieces with favourable fixtures over the next 8GWs.

Amalfitano rotates perfectly with Ravel.. looking out for a 5.2 mid. is he worth a punt? looked decent from the little i've seen of him.. will he play in defense with Ridgewll out?

          Aguero for Christmas:

Obviously Kun is red hot at the moment and with a game at home to Swansea who are looking to get the Etihad Rolling Treatment, who can blame you for wanting to get him in. A tough encounter against Valencia on Thursday night wont do the Swans any favours either.

However - looking at the run of fixtures into Christmas and over that period I am still a little wary due to potential rotation, the away form of City and the home games that they do have are hardly seen as push-overs apart from a 20+ pointer on 28/12 against Palace!! My guesswork below:

01/12 Swansea (home): easy home win, surely a continuation of home form of late
04/12 West Brom (away): goals for sure - but City away form?
07/12 Southampton (away) 3 days after Brom away against a tight Southampton defence at home
14/12 Arsenal (home) never write them off at home but Arsenal are starting to show signs of shut outs in defence
21/12 Fulham (away) easy win, I can see Kun picking big points up at the Cottage
26/12 Liverpool (home) I fancy goals on both ends here, although Liverpool showing form, their goals against away from home is in favour for City
28/12 Palace (home) a mad scramble to get Aguero in for the armband no doubt
01/01 Swansea (away): an away win expected again but depends on the form they show within this period

How do you think the form of City will affect Aguero? Will he get rotated and if so which games? Should Rooney owners be looking to swap him in due to suspension looming or should they ride it out as United fixtures are looking tasty.

i see it more like aguero will get taken off early rather than rotated, plus their away form should improve.
He has proven he can still get points no matter other team or result.

Thoughts on a move this week. 1 FT.

            Boruc (marshall)
Coleman / Terry / Dawson (Wilson, Turner)
Ozil / Sess / Snodgrass / Morrison (Januzaj)
            Rooney, Suarez, Aguero

            Need to drop Snodgrass.

Is Lamps going to stay in the middle? Ramsey a safer play? Save and make 2 moves on the short week next GW?

Start Januzaj for Snoddy and next week get rid of Snoddy and Wilson

For Wilson look at Baker AVL 3.9 or Gabbidon CPY 4.0
