Scout Notes – Gameweek 14 – Tuesday

Marouane Chamakh grabs the only goal of Palace’s win over West Ham as Tony Pulis picks up all three points in his first home match in charge. The Eagles’ defensive resilience continues to impress as Sam Allardyce’s side draw yet another blank on their travels:

Eagles Budget Backline in the Points Again
After leaking 21 goals in the first 10 Gameweeks, with not a single clean sheet to their name, the Palace defence were virtual write-offs to Fantasy managers over the first few months of the season. The Eagles seemed incapable of keeping out opponents but, thanks to caretaker manager Keith Millen and Pulis’ subsequent arrival, we suddenly have a potential source of budget value at our disposal. Last night’s win means Palace have now registered three clean sheets in four and conceded just a single goal over those fixtures – the likes of Danny Gabbidon, Joel Ward and Dean Moxey still sit at 4.0 in FPL, whilst Julian Speroni (4.5) offers a potential replacement for Artur Boruc owners. With an outstanding run of home opponents on the menu (CAR, NEW, NOR, STO, HUL, WBA) Pulis’ backline regulars could well be worth considering.

Chamakh Heads onto Fantasy Radars
With his only goal of the season arriving back in Gameweek 2, it’s fair to say the Moroccan has had an underwhelming start to life at Selhurst Park prior to last night. The Moroccan’s winner against the Hammers served a reminder of the aerial ability that forged his reputation at Bordeaux and suggested that, whilst his time at Arsenal may have been ultimately unsuccessful, he may just have found an ally in Tony Pulis. Chamakh’s prowess in the air makes him the perfect target man for his new manager’s tactics, with set-pieces and delivery from the flanks looking essential to Palace’s survival bid. Coming in at a mere 4.7 in FPL, he’s the cheapest guaranteed starter up front around and, with the likes of Barry Bannan supplying quality balls from out wide, Chamakh may just appeal to those Fantasy managers willing to punt on a budget forward. We gave Bannan, at 4.4, a shout in yesterday’s Spot the Differential article and he backed up our hunch – the Scot has now started each of the last six and has scored or assisted both his side’s last two goals.

Another Stuttering Away Day for the Hammers
Sam Allardyce’s side rolled up to Selhurst Park off the back of a convincing weekend triumph over Fulham, but once again their failures on the road arose. Take away their 3-0 win at Spurs in Gameweek 7 and the Hammers have scored a single goal in six away games – clearly, the lack of cutting edge that saw them score just 11 times on their travels in 2012/13 has been far from remedied. The London outfit’s next two road trips are at Liverpool and United and, with a home clash against Arsenal also amongst their next four fixtures, Allardyce’s side look set for a testing time.

Morrison Falls off the Suspension Tightrope
The budget Fantasy favourite found himself back in the starting XI after being rested to the bench last weekend but Morrison is set for an enforced absence as the Hammers travel to Anfield this Saturday. Somewhat fortunate to only receive a yellow card for pushing Palace right-back Joel Ward in the face, the former United youngster has now accrued five cautions for the season and will serve a one-match ban for Gameweek 15. Morrison will, however, be available for the following week’s home game against Sunderland – the above-mentioned schedule may have many thinking twice, though. His owners will be hoping Morrison doesn’t fall foul to the new FA ruling which allows retrospective action – a law that came into place after a similar incident took place between Fernando Torres and Jan Vertonghen earlier in the season.

Is John Terry worth spending the 6.5 (nearly 6.6) on ?
It seems a lot of the top 10 have him and obviously he's 2nd in def rankings ,
In reality we have no problem spending around 6.5 on Cabaye / Sess etc and they can be frustrating to own to say the least and the way the current points (baps) is set up a 1-0 victory from team seems to be awarding your
defender 6/7/8 points which you you gladly take from your mid bracket mf on a given week ,
    Eg Terry 68 pts (6.5) / Mert 59 (5.9) / Lovern 62 (5.8)
    Mirallas 53 pts (7.3) / Cabaye 55 pts (6.5) / Sess 38 pts (6.6)
There are plenty more eg but it seems to me there is more Ppg available if you select the right def over your mf in a similar price bracket .
so is it a case this season of bring prepared to spend a little more on a defender than on midfielders ?

Yes and no. The caveat to ur point is that cheaper defenders will also score well eg. Coleman/Jagielka, Mert/Kosc, Evans, Nastasic etc...

Investing in the right ones is key. Obviously Terry is a good pick, and is good value. But is he better value than other, cheaper defenders? Or even better in pure point terms? That's what u need to assess.

I think Terry is a great pick btw.

You dont have regularly playing 4.0-5.0m midfielders that you can play each week on a rotation, with defenders you.

One of the things that baffles me often is comparing high-price defenders with mid-priced mids.

why? if you need to choose from playing 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 then comparing a def and a mid is what you need to do.

Obviously, the teams at the top of the league have the highest scoring players... that's why they're at the top. Looking at the current top teams doesn't help you. Looking at a team that has consistently come in the top 5k in previous seasons could be helpful though.

Terry is a good pick. Chelsea have good fixtures and they can always keep a CS and Terry can also score. Plus he seems nailed on to start.

The teams that have gone for 5 big defs and terrible mids haven't done well. What you're forgetting is that cheap defs can score just as many points as expensive defs. e.g. the Soton defence. What's the point in the spending 7 on a def when you can get someone nearly as good for 4.5?
The difference between a 7m mid and 4.5m mid is massive though.

Also, you keep looking at short term results... Things are so easy in hindsight... You're assuming you know which big defender is going to score big in the next. Evra costs a bunch. If you'd had gone for him as your big defender, you wouldn't be doing as well as if you'd had picked Terry...
I can tell you that the teams that went for 5 big defenders after WCing in gw3 have not done well...

Lastly, even the best teams only keep a CS 1 in every 2 or 3 games. And if they are a top team, the bonus points usually go to their strikers/mids because the big teams also score a lot of goals.

Guys, I need your thoughts on this seeing it will take me 4 transfers and 3 weeks to get there:
    Speroni
Terry - Dawson - Clyne (Gabbidon, Chester)
    Hazard - Gerrard - Lampard - Ramsey (+benchfodder)
    Aguero - Rooney - Suarez

The attacking players are pretty unreal, the defense is solid, but there's a fear of rotation of course with 1 non playing midfielder.

I don't see any reason planning that far ahead. Also, after GW16 I don't think I'd go without Everton. Don't like Lamps for the Christmas period.

Mourinho isn't afraid to rotate him, if it wasn't for the Oscar injury and early Essien YC I'm not sure he'd come on, at least not that early. Then again he's in an awkward price range.

It's a god team but I'm not convinced at having 1 non playing midfielder when one of your mids is Lampard who will no doubt get rotated over Christmas. Also double Palace at the back is a bit iffy as well.

I think you gotta look at the odds more and not what actually happened. I mean anything can happen, Aguero could have gotten sent off, still wouldn't change the fact he was the best captaincy option by some distance. Suarez' scoring odds this GW are... way, waaaay up there.

This is similar to my thinking. Surely Ozil and Ramsey will remain the two players Wenger would always be looking to start, fitness permitting. By doing Ozil > Walcott (as many on here seem to have done) it seems like they're just increasing the chance of their player in that position not playing s full game.

With our away form I'm a little worried as well. Depends a bit on formation I guess, 4-3-3 is good news for Hazard we've played that the last 2-3 away games.

i honestly never expect much from hazard..Every game i watch him play he's scared to take shots and does not split defenses apart with passes. Happy he's done well for me uptil now but i am not confident whatsoever as far as returns are concerned

    Migs
Walker - Mert- Chico - Ward - Burner

    Nasri - Gerrard - Oscar - RMorrison - Townsend

    Aguero - Suarez - Remy

    Got 0.1 ITB. 1 FT

Could use an opinion on where to go from here.

Right now Im thinking Townsend - JWP (frees up 1.1 for me)

From there on, I can either go Nasri > Walcott and keep Remy/Lukaku as my 3rd forward option, or do Oscar > Walcott for a straight swap and upgrade Remy to Benteke (or Rooney, but would have to downgrade Nasri for that).

    Thanks for any views.

    Cheers

I feel it might be time to cash in on Ravel, had since 4.5 mill and don't like risk associated with his discipline. Apart from sunderland his next fixtures aren't great

    How about Ravel-->Brunt/Amilfitano (Norwich(H), Cardiff(A), Hull(H), next 3)

Lallana might struggle given Southampton's near-term fixtures. If you downgraded a defender to a 4m, could you manage Lallana > Nasri?

Too soon to punt on Lamela IMO. I'm watching him like a hawk myself but we have to wait until he starts scoring Premier League goals

Definitely. He obviously has the raw talent but he needs to adapt to the PL and AVB has given him very little time to do so. Sadly I think it might be next season before he becomes a real Fantasy prospect. At least by then he'll be priced according to this year's performance 🙂

it was also down to the lack of spaniards in the spurs team. when aguero came he had the likes of silva, zaba, yaya

Looking ahead what GW are people planning to use their Jan WC?

Think I'll be hitting it straight away on GW20. Don't really see many reasons to hold on to it any later. Can't pick out any really good runs.

2 potential reasons for holiding on to it. To see what your rivals do when they use theirs, and in case there is bad weather in January that causes games to be cancelled. If you don't have a pressing need to use it early, then why give your rivals the chance to see your team early on?

Don't know yet. December is a crucial month for me - had such an awful start and really need to start clawing back some points. Still have my main wildcard too, so hoping for some postponements and a huge DGW towards the end of the season that I can profit from!
