Community

The Community Round Up

This week has seen the re-emergence of rotating defender strategies, a concept long thought lost, as premium defenders dominated the scoring in the first few weeks of the season.  The community has also been taking a look at potential improvements to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and its bonus points system, as well as airing their ongoing frustrations surrounding those pesky Yaya Toure- and Aaron Ramsey-owning casuals. We catch up with the week’s discussions, along with the very latest in our community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Among our most popular posts this week was Maxi’s soapbox-style discussion about team value and his criticism of those placing too much emphasis on how much their Fantasy squad is worth. He ponders whether money made on a player that is a season keeper really matters.

The structure and rules of the FPL game also came under discussion this week, courtesy of Evs. Among ideas to improve the game was Stinkfly’s suggestion that managers be restricted to just two players per team. Also, Gimli Son Of Gloin wants keepers to be given more points for a clean sheet, while Ryan called for defensive midfielders to get rewarded for their hard work protecting the backline.

Granville was also on hand to say his piece, aiming his ire specifically the Bonus Points System (BPS). He was concerned that a whopping seven players gained bonus points during Crystal Palace’s largely drab 1-0 victory over West Ham. Could the BPS be improved? Champ certainly thinks so, with his call to “bring back the man in the stands”.

With premium midfielders starting to pick up points, those who sing at the church of cheap defensive rotation were in good voice this week. Innsie’s post looking at the best options was particularly good, particularly for those already with a Crystal Palace defender. Bankst was another looking at rotation options, this time focusing on goalkeepers. A blend of Cardiff stopper David Marshall and Palace’s Julián Speroni was picked out as particularly enticing.

Talking of keepers, Evs was one of many in the unenviable predicament of having both his stoppers, Southampton’s Artur Boruc and Kelvin Davis, injured going into Gameweek 14. During his discussion about what his fellow sufferers plan to do he talked up (and ended up drafting in) Manchester City’s goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, while Hamerstergod was eyeing up Cardiff’s Marshall.

Boruc’s injury will have come as a blow to many a “casual manager” – those who put their trust in the bandwagons and adopt a fire-and-forget policy. On that front, HVT had a go at creating the the definitive ‘casual’ team. True to form this season, it turns out that he created a pretty impressive lineup.

And finally, ahead of Gameweek 14, Konig Luther provided this interesting post about how many points are needed to reach key ranking achievements. Giggs Boson was among those pleased to discover he was just a whisker away from the top 10,000 at the time.

Community Leagues & Cups

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing League has lost another 62 managers across Gameweeks 13 and 14, leaving 488 to continue on.

Evs, Bootsy, Athletico Timbo, Crouch Potato, Chazza and Koneheads currently lead In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues.  Meanwhile, his cup competition has reached the quarter finals stage with La Roja among the community names still involved.

In Fifa Las Vegas’s ‘Championship style’ competitionSomebody’s Gonna Get Lit Up and Champ are currently embroiled in the final, which is taking place over Gameweek 15.

A reminder that the FFS Paddy Power Cup Third Round was played out over this weekned’s matches – we’ll bring you a full run-down of the results and the draw for the next round on Tuesday.

Got a few Qs. Tried to make it as simple as possible, so would appreciate some response.

    a) Gerrard Ravel or Redmond Silva til Jan WC?

    b) Fer Kosc or Redmond Mert/Evra + 4?

    c) Burner Ravel or Kosc Jedinak?
Latter ones are just benchers, but we all know they will be in sometime during the Xmas period.

    c) Worth taking a hit to transfer out Jedinak to Silva instead of Ravel next week?

      A) Wait another week for Silva but I would still go with Gerrard (Wait for injury update as well) and Ravel

      B) Redmond/Evra for the coming 2 weeks then Mert (fixtures become easy)

      c) Burner and Ravel

      d) Yes

        A) Waiting on that Gerrard news before the transfer to either Redmond or Fer (question B).
Silva will be in next week for either Ravel or Jedinak depending on who I'm bringing in this week..

        B) The defenders will come in the coming 2 weeks so Mert it is

Based on that it seems like I will do

        This week Gerrard -> Redmond
Next week Jedinak Ivanovic -> Silva Merte

      A) Impossible to answer without knowing the extent of Gerrard's injury but if he's ready by this weekend, (doubt it), I'd choose him and Ravel
      B) Fer Kosc
      C) Burner Ravel
      D) No, Ravel has a good fixture this week.

        A) Will wait on the news, but very unlikely that a hammy injury is recovered within a week. Usually 2-3 weeks at least.

Assuming he's out, which one will you go with?

        D) I will keep Ravel this week regardless. It's from next week onwards, would you take a hit to keep him in your team instead of Jedinak?

Well if he's out for a while then Silva + Redmond would be better.

I probably would take the hit, it's always nice to have a 5th mid who has potential to pop up with the odd goal when you'll need him.

Cheers bud. Based on your answers, this will be my transfer

            Gerrard -> Fer this week
Jedinak Ivan -> Silva Burner (-4) next.

No Redmond due to answer in B and no Kosc due to C.

A - has two injured players in it, forget that.
      B - your doing a sideways transfer for a ht? Don't bother.
C - again it depends what players you already have.
D - wait until Silva plays 90 mins.

        A) Won't bring in Silva until next week. And assuming he's fit.

        B) It's actually continuing from A. Assuming I take out Gerrard, who will I transfer in this week. Redmond or Fer?

If I go Redmond, I have enough £ to do Jedi or Ravel (D), to Silva directly next week and Ivanovic to Mert / Evra the week after.

If I go Fer, I'll have to do both transfer immediately, thus a hit on next week.

        C) Fair enough. But long story short, either Kosc or Burner (rotating with Gabbi) will be my 3rd defender. And Ravel / Jedi is on 1st bench.

        D) Assuming Silva plays 90 min, which one will you go with.

I know this is all just scneario-ish. But I'd like to plan ahead as a contigency plan. Won't pull the trigger until there's definite news.

Fair point and most of the times this is always true especially for a long term plan.

But this is just for this GW and the next.

And you can say I like the planning aspects of this game and seeing people views on different scenarios, even if in the end my transfer didn't go through as I planned (and asked).

            I'm weird like that.

How does Rosenior to Distin and Gerrard to Silva/Oscar (pending fitness of all 3) sound like? team at the moment is
    Marshall (Davis)
    Terry GJ Burner Gabbidon (Rosenior)
    Hazard Ramsey Ravel Brady (Gerrard)
    Suarez Aguero Rooney
    1,5 million in bank

GJ has two decent ish fixtures. Even if Liverpool are shit at the back. Trust me I know, Skrtel scored two own goals for me!

Also, have you looked at GW17's fixtures? There isn't many decent matches to field your defenders in, Liverpool have a decent shout at a clean sheet that week.

Thanks all for the replies on previous post.

I agree how pants United are, but I think I should give Evra a few more chances (avl,WHM,hul, nor) to play in my team. Also, Terry should have his last chance (CPL) this week before considering to hold or sell him.

    Terry - Evra - B.Turner (Ward, Vlaar)

May get some more comments on the idea of taking -4pts hit for Vlaar >> Jagielka or Coleman? It's a move for long-term plan that may pay off this week if they get Baps as usual.

It is reverse out-of-position, so you don't get all of the bonus for clean sheets and you don't get as much if he scores, but at 4.4, Oviedo is locked in as a starter until Baines gets back.

    Rooney,Aguero,Suarez

Thinking of downgrading Evra to Distin to invest some money in the mid. Sess needs to go out. Any suggestions? Also is Migs to Howard worth it? Could do Evra>Kos/Distin and Migs>Howard. Thanks.

I need some help. I've been riding the top of my league for the whole season; but had a big slip with a bad captain choice (Suarez hitting 24 points; versus me going another direction).

I just did Mignolet out for Howard (no FT left). I need some help as to what I should be looking to do next week/going forward. How can I improve this team and would it be worth taking some hits (I'm more than 40 points back)?

    Howard
    Distin-Jagielka-Fonte-Lovren
    Yaya-Lallana-Ramsey
    Rooney-Suarez-Aguero

    Bench: Myhill-Bacuna-Meyler-Baker
    Bank: 0.3m

I imagine that I have to ditch those Southampton players; but who would be a comparable price and an upgrade?

    Thanks!
