The Dugout Discussion – Monday

Nine down, one to go as Swansea welcome Hull to the Liberty and hand us some Monday night football to sink our teeth into. Michael Laudrup’s side have offered Fantasy managers a strong source of points at both ends of the pitch in front of their own fans – three of the last four home games have produced a clean sheet and three goals or more for the Welsh outfit:

Jonjo Shelvey’s 14-point haul in the previous Gameweek saw the former Liverpool man earn himself over 161,000 new owners prior to the weekend deadline, though with Curtis Davies back on board after serving a one-match suspension, the Tigers will be hoping to turn in a resilient display.

The big news is that Michu is fit and available to lead the line for the hosts after recovering from ankle and knee problems. He replaces Alvaro Vazquez up top in one of three changes by Laudrup, as Gerhard Tremmel and Nathan Dyer come in for Michel Vorm and Alex Pozuelo. Robbie Brady drops out for the Tigers after a series of disappointing displays since returning from injury.

As always, our Dugout Discussion chatroom remains open right through to the final whistle.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Norwich FPL update

Lots of people looking at the Redmond / Fer debate, having watched them for every minute, here's a mini-guide for those perhaps wondering which one to get.

Fer is a natural box-to-box midfielder, but plays best in a slightly advanced position. Unfortunately due to the injury to Tettey (DM), Fer had to play further back in a 4-4-2 variation. Bradley Johnson has since been re-introduced allowing Fer to get further forward. He has a great engine, explaining why his goals recently have come 80+mins into the game, driving forward, catching teams on the break. He's great in the air and can strike a ball well. However, Hughton looks to be playing 4-4-2 at home against the 'lesser' sides, meaning a 5-10 yard drop back in play for Fer.

Redmond is a live-wire, extremely fast, ghosts pasts people and has already created a lot of chances. However, like all pacy, young wingers, he sometimes suffers from poor-decision making and wayward shots. The injuries to Pilkington and Snodgrass has resulted in a guaranteed place for Redmond as well as corner and free-kick duties. With the majority of our goals coming from set-pieces and counter-attacks, if we score, there's a big chance Redmond would have played a part.

    Fer = 5.8
    Redmond = 4.6

Fer perhaps has the bigger goal threat, but I just don't feel this is worth the 1.2m premium. For the next 4 weeks atleast, Redmond is a cracking option for the 5th midfielder berth. Redmond edges it, just.

Thanks Hooperman. Good analysis of the pair.

I didn't have much chance to watch Norwich live. Fer is in my memory a bit more than Redmond. It's probably because of his latest goal.

    Hello.

    Myhill | Gazza
    JT | Jags | Coleman | Shaw | Gabbidon
    Ramsey | Hazard | Yaya | Mutch | GERRARD
    Aguero | Suarez| Lukaku

    1.0 m in bank.

Need to get Gerrard out. Walcott and Silva seem the only decent replacements as Ozil is too far.

Should I wait and see if Silva gets 90 in midweek? As that would mean he'd be rested later. Or is there any other mid I have missed out on?

          Yeah, agreed,

also..., I think people might be getting tired of me pointing it out here, (or they might not have noticed), but Walcott's injury (abdominal wall hernia) is of a type that is notorious for recurrence and rarely heals up really well until PROLONGED rest. Makes me really nervous about committing to him as a foundation of my team

And they have way too many options for the three behind Giroud. And Ox and Podolski will come back soon enough.

Any reasons to be put off of Michael Turner?

Need to add a defender now that Chico got suspended. Was planning on moving him out soon anyway, but was going to let him play one more week. Now my backline options are:

Evans (avl), BTurner (WBA), Vlaar (MUN) -- but injured, Ward (che) -- don't want him to get anywhere near the field, and Chico (suspended)

And more guaranteed for at least appearance time than my former fifth mid (Januzaj)

FWIW, here's the whole squad, although you don't need it to answer the original question

Howard/Mignolet (planning to swap the two for home fixtures through the Jan window and then go back to one starter and a 4.0 backup)

          Defense as above (currently)
          Evans/Vlaar/Burner/Ward/Chico
          Ozil/Hazard/Ramsey/Cabaye/Oviedo
          Rooney/Suarez/Lukaku

82 points this week took me up to 78K overall, finally cracked top 100K and feeling in a groove with 8 straight weeks over 60 points.

True. Guess I've just mainly been looking to center backs if points were similar, because of the greater chance that they stumble into some BAP if they get a cleanie. Can't confirm right now, because FPL site is so wonky, but I think when I sort them by BPS (as opposed to actual Bonus), there was a fair difference between them, but I may be overemphasizing this issue.

It did lead me to go with Ward as my Palace defender though.... 🙂

planning to downgrade one of the big hitters to ward and upgrade boruc > howard...So who should i downgrade:

A: vidic...good fixtures but with utd, that doesnt really count..
B: mert...great form, but tough fixtures
C: dawson...good value, nailed on i reckon especially since vertonghen is injured..decent fix

Also, since everyone is putting up some informative posts, I'd been looking at which teams usually have blanks home and away as it helps in picking defense.

Here is the list until this GW:
Arsenal: 1 (No blanks at home) || (1 blank away United)

Aston Villa: 7 (Liverpool, Tottenham, Everton, Sunderland) || (Hull, West Ham, Fulham)

Cardiff: 8 (Everton, Tottenham, Arsenal) || (West Ham, Norwich, Aston Villa, Stoke, Crystal Palace)

Crystal Palace: 8 (Tottenham, Swansea, Arsenal, Everton) || (United, Southampton, West Brom, Norwich)

Chelsea 3: (No blanks at home) || (United, Everton, Newcastle)

Everton 4: (West Brom, Tottenham) || (Cardiff, Crystal Palace)

Fulham: 5 (No blanks at home) || (Newcastle, Chelsea, Southampton, Liverpool, West Ham)

Hull: 6 (Aston Villa, Crystal Palace) || (Chelsea, City, Tottenham, Arsenal)

    Liverpool: 2 (Southamton) || (Arsenal)

Manchester City: 2 (No blanks at home) || (Stoke, Sunderland)

These are the first ten teams. Interesting things from these are that Fulham, even after being whipping boys do not blank at home but have away day blues.

Also, City and Arsenal, Chelsea also do not blank at home EVER. Villa are worse off at home in terms of scoring. Hull on the other hand have blanked against all the big boys but score against others (including Swansea).

Lemme know if this is in any way useful, otherwise it would be pointless to do part II 😛

West Brom will likely score after last weeks display where they missed too many chances.

          Stoke defenders are overpriced now.

            Gecko,

Your point seems irrational to me. They may or may not be likely to score, but the fact they missed too many chances last week doesn't mean they are more likely to score this week, you could argue the opposite is true if anything.

Re: stoke defenders...I haven't actually got any lol. I have Chester for Hull who face Stoke at home.

Having said that I agree with your ranking of the 5 😀

West Btom are actually decent away from home (only blanked twice and one of them was Everton). Norwich are really leaky.

From the games I've seen of Brom, they create chances, just that they failed to score last week. Not a good chance that'll happen two weeks in a row.

Yeah, not disputing that, I've watched very few WBA games in full this season so you know a lot more than than me by the sounds of things.

Just picking you up on the logical fallacy in your reasoning. 🙂

"Not a good chance that'll happen two weeks in a row"

If you think about it, since the first event (not scoring last week) has already happened, it does not factor into the chance of the second hypothetical event happening (them not scoring again this week)

Soz mate, I get pedantic about this sort of thing!

Bring Cabaye in to midfield? He's done wonders for me since I got him a while back. Delivers nice corners and so much of Newcastle's attack has run through him of late. More nailed on for time than Ravel. Suspended for the next game, obviously, so it's a play for the longer run.

In short term, could pick up a bit more money in short term by bringing in Oviedo for a 5th midfielder. Yes he is reverse out of position so you won't get the full points for clean sheets and you get shorted a bit if he scores, but if you look at him instead as being 4.4 and nailed on for time until Baines gets back and playing for a team that has a bunch of winnable fixtures coming up, he's a pretty appealing option. Don't think you will find better at 4.4 for a fifth midfielder

We have the same number of points!
      1. Clyne will probably be fit by next week.
      2. Get GJ out for anyone. Liverpool don't do clean sheets. Recently even Spurs have stopped.
      3. Coutinho is a waste of 8.5. Transfer him out for Silva whenever he comes in.
      4. Williams has bad fixtures after next week. Sell him then.

No other problems as such. The frontline is immense.

All of your Everton is belong to me.... 🙂

Howard, I'd guess, but you might want to make sure you have a capable replacement on hand for the week when he gets his fifth yellow. He's prone to picking one up for wasting time at the end of a match. He does it at international level as well. It's intentional and fairly well-controlled, it seems, but I could see him doing it again in advance of one of their more winnable fixtures, just to get the suspension out of the way.

Don't think you'd go wrong doubling up on defense, though, even though Martinez has had naysayers about his defense from the start of the season.

How many players will people have for Arsenal vs Chelsea in GW17? Lots of people have Arsenal players and some of us will be looking to take advantage of the Chelsea Palace game this week, could be an issue for the following gameweek.

I have Terry, Ivan (yep - big double up fail) as well as Ramsey and Özil. Also looking to do Coutinho to Hazard but having second thoughts now....

No to B, C. Ozil has a few tough games, so try and get him GW18 or 19.

Oscar may or may not be starting at the weekend. See if he gets a few minutes midweek or something. He's a bargain at the current price.

So, wait on D. or else just do A.

      or go E (Silva).

I was comfortably in first; until a rival cloned my team. I then had a captaining mishap the day Suarez hit 24 points. He jumped over me.
