The ScoutCast – Episode 119 – Throaty

Feeling rougher than a Lee Cattermole tackle, I manage to patch myself up to share a microphone with Granville for another Podcast episode. Tonsils in tatters, the usual round of blows come my way as my co-host strolls into the mini-league distance with a comfortable three-figure lead.

We talk Rooney vs Aguero and rinse through the ScoutCast regulars, while I end up getting misty-eyed about Stephen Ireland – one of a select band of “soft spot” players who rise to the top of my watchlist at the first sign of a semblance of form. And I wonder why I’m struggling.

I've been kinda wondering about that myself. It could be Coutinho's time to shine for a bit. The guy has talent and had a pretty good minutes to points ratio last season, so it's not going out on a limb to think that he should have some good points-return periods. A lot of guys tally it up for three-game stretches, or somewhere thereabout, and he might be due for such a run.

I wouldn't, Michu not really 100% (+ away to Norwich, home to Everton, away to Chelsea, away to Villa, home to City, away United)

Coutinho could get a lot more involved with Gerrard out

sorry for this repeatedly but doing some extensive fantasy analysis at 3:30am 😀

Which combo do you think will get more points:

    A:
    gw16 - howard (FUL) + dawson (LIV)
    gw17 - myhill (HUL) + ward (NEW)
    gw18 - howard (SUN) + mert (whm)
    gw19 - howard (SOT) + burner (SUN)

    B:
    gw16 - marshall (WBA) + jagielka (FUL)
    gw17 - myhill (HUL) + jagielka (swa)
    gw18 - marshall (SOT) + jagielka (SUN)
    gw19 - marshall (SUN) + jagielka (SOT)

I personally think B but it would involve an extra transfer in gw20 to sort out my second gk as marshall faces arsenal then

Def B and just play marshall GW20, there's always the save points and silly making a transfer on a keeper that then as you can activate your WC around about that time.

Would it be fair if someone captains suarez and gets 30 points while another captains Rooney and gets 2.

You can use the statistics to make an informed choice but at the end of the day luck plays the most part.

Of course it would be fair.
You can put it like this if you were to be so inclined :

Rooney is playing for a faltering United side. He may lose about 40% of his set pieces to RVP.
He may play a deeper role to make up for United's uselessness in midfield.

Suarez is the form player in the league. Tottenham are missing their two best defenders, Chiriches and Vertonghen. Gerrard being out may actually lend Liverpool more fluidity in their game.

Obviously Rooney is the better captaincy choice this week, but it all comes down to sheer dumb luck.

Something interesting I've just noticed is Suarez has scored 13 of his 14 goals this year vs the bottom 6 in the league. His other goal was a free kick vs Everton. It will be interesting to see if he can score many vs the better clubs as the year goes on. Aguero is a great price in my book to be top scorer anyway!

That's a good argument. I was gonna mention that I hoped it didn't turn into any kind of nationalism debate. In a way, both managers are probably better off where they are at. Jurgen a developing manager with fresh, vibrant ideas to experiment with while overseeing what is still a developing U.S. operation in the long run, and Roy with his history and experience in the manager role with an England team that has a much more rooted system where tradition is already deeply rooted.

All in all, I am just happy that someone with Jurgen's enthusiasm, competitive integrity, and understanding of the game on a more international level is at the U.S. helm. If nothing else, he has reached farther and wider than any other U.S. manager to uncover the best talent available.

In Australia 9 out of 10 times if you win the toss you bat first. On the 10th occasion you think about bowling, then bat first anyway

I must admit that I have no comprehension of cricket and its rules. Guess that's a U.S. thing. I don't think anyone over here has ever played the game. I used to watch Sky Sports here and there over the last few years when it was on one of the channels, and still with all the cricket highlights and chatter, I have no understanding. A simple overview of the rules perhaps? (I know, explaining the rules for any sport can be a difficult thing, so avoid it if you don't feel like it. I can always get on wikipedia or something).

Certainly in the first couple of fixtures, I think the Aussies wouldn't have been too put out bowling on here first though.

Is this a crazy move for a -4 point hit for next week (gw17)

    Remy out, Chamakh/Deulofeu in
    Cabaye out, Silva in

    Mignolet, Boruc
    Jagielka, Terry, Mert, Clyne, Burner
    Silva, Hazard, Ozil, Ramsey, Oviedo
    Suarez, Aguero, Chamakh

Would play 3-5-2 or 4-4-2. Leaves me with 0.5 in bank.

    Opinions & thanks in advance.

I have a certain appreciation for moves like that. With what I've seen from Deulofeu, there is no sign that says he won't keep getting points as long as he gets to play. He's a special talent and has an eye for things that the average cat just doesn't. Plus, Silva ain't no bag o' peanuts.

    Which three to play?

    Lallana / Ramsey / Özil / Ravel

The last three despite Arsenal away at Eithad, right?

        I'm feeling that too..

        But..

Özil .. Generally poor away, but 11-11-10 on the last three include one away.
Ramsey .. Highest ownership in the game. Huge damage if he delivers.

I'd play the first 3. I think you have to play your star players (Ozil & Ramsey) all the time. They are class & if anything will lift & play better against quality opposition.

Looking at one of these sets of midfielders on my WC:

    A) Ozil and Oscar

    B) Walcott and Hazard

I'm thinking B because there is more of a goal threat, what do you guys think?

Also are Bannan and Redmond good enough for the 2 cheapies? will Let me have Rooney, Lukaku, Suarez, Silva, Oscar/Ozil and Hazard/Walcott plus a decent defence.

I think I would rather have Hazard and Ramsey. The 2 cheap mids are fine as there aren't really any mids screaming out to be picked, and cash needs to be spent on a big front 3.

I would pick Ramsey although it's likely he'll be part of the double pivot when everyone is fit, would be interesting to compare his points ppg as one of the 3 behind vs one of the two deep.

Another quick question Gerrard/Coutinho and Aguero or Silva and Suarez?

Personally at the moment I would have Ozil over Walcott and Hazard over Oscar. But like I said plenty of time till that WC comes around, one or two or all 4 could easily have suspensions or injuries to contend with making your choice easier or clear cut.

I just want to say to anyone out there who is losing in their mini league or just unhappy with their FPL points in general that there are still plenty of time to turn that tugboat around! Being down 100 points or whatever at this present time ain't such a mountain. Just get your stuff in order and hope for some good captain picks. You can always make up ground. Yeah for Inspiration!

I overcame more than 100 points much later in the season once and also had quiet a big comeback in Fantasy MLS this year. Picking the right captain over opponents is the best way to narrow the gaps quickly. Of course, easier said than done, but very much possible.
