The ScoutCast – Episode 119 – Throaty

Feeling rougher than a Lee Cattermole tackle, I manage to patch myself up to share a microphone with Granville for another Podcast episode. Tonsils in tatters, the usual round of blows come my way as my co-host strolls into the mini-league distance with a comfortable three-figure lead.

We talk Rooney vs Aguero and rinse through the ScoutCast regulars, while I end up getting misty-eyed about Stephen Ireland – one of a select band of “soft spot” players who rise to the top of my watchlist at the first sign of a semblance of form. And I wonder why I’m struggling.

Isnt Howard and Jag delivering the points? And Terry just score a goal and Zab with assist?
And I doubt you can go better with your current strike force, adding ramsey hazard and yaya this is a good team.

p.s are you just trolling :p

Strikes me that Ozil is a top player and hence fixture proof. He owned England in the World Cup, has been owning in Champs league for years, a "tough game" against City isn't special imo. Will probably grab an assist.

Ok, he started 12 out of 15, but came on in two of the three he didn't start. If you got him for 4.5 then there are no better options. Madness to sell in my opinion given Everton's fixtures and the way Martinez has been bigging him up.

Don't agree. I dropped him so that I could get a third Everton player with more appeal (Howard).

I think he's a fantastic real life player but his FPL returns are no better than most of the other similarly priced mids.

But he's had quite a few subs on and off. In 4 of the last 7 games, he's played less than 60 mins. Probably nailed on this week though.

He also hasn't scored or assisted since GW6, which people keep glossing over. Gareth Barry has had three assists in that time.

Can I get away with this team this week?

    Mignolet
    Coleman Terry Chester
    Ozil Coutinho Ramsey Redmond
    Suarez Aguero Lukaku

    0.0 in bank 1FT

3 Liverpool at Spurs and 2 Arsenal at City, but nicely set up for next week.

For an uncertain starter like Torres it is a bit different because a bet is refunded if he doesn't start. So those odds make him favourite IF he starts.

Good old Torres can ruin anything can't he haha. I use the bookies odds but not to the extent I'd bring Torres into my team! In the case that you own Lukaku, though, I'd definitely put the armband on him with a degree of confidence this week

True to an extent, this affects the odds, but they will expect more people to bet on Suarez if anything since he is on fire.

For me it just means that the thing is intractable. I can't penetrate the interaction of the two factors enough to determine what proportion of the odds is the people factor, and what proportion is their estimate of the event. So I pretty much ignore them. Possibly going too far 🙂

This is the first season I've used them. Last season my captaincy score was very low so I decided to use something external to choose captaincy.

My average captaincy score this season has been 19.7 so pretty much double figures x2 on average

I'll take that, so not changing my strategy anytime soon!

Of course Suarez and aguero have boosted that average ridiculously lately though! Before that it was around 7 average, which I'd still take on any normal season.

I do think bookies odds are a fairly reliable indicator when compared with things like gut instinct, the captains poll (which reflects ownership) etc, but I would much prefer to know an odds compiler personally and ask him his honest opinion excluding the influence of betting patterns. These guys know their stuff!

Is it that simple though? Is there not a factor of artificially shortening the odds if they expect lots of bets?

If they expect lots of bets, but they think the bets are in their favour already, they will not feel the need to shorten the odds unless it gets to the stage where they can't afford the potential loss. For the major bookies, they can take a hit if they think it was a plus EV decision. Overall they'll win if they are making their odds shorter than their perceived actual odds. (If their perception is good!)

its good to be ahead of the rest with transfers but sometimes too early can be bad - look at walcott. personally i'd wait one more week, they're playing arsenal anyway so its not like its an easy fixture even if he starts?

I agree. But if Januzaj (or somebody else) doesnt play, Gabbidon comes to the rescue. If more than one doesnt play I have none. If I knew Januzaj would play I would not do the move, but since his gametime is so uncertain I think it might be worth it. In fact I am happy just by breaking even with the move since it accelerates the improvement of my team going into the christmas period. I think it is 95 % certain that Silva starts this weekend and I think City will crush Arsenal on Ethiad. I guess I am just trying to convince my self that it is a good move but thats what it is all about isnt it 🙂

sound enough move, i am looking at silva too. i was in the same situation last week with ravmo and rooney banned, had no bench. ended up wasting a silly transfer when all 11 played anyway 🙁 its a tough call when the bench is scarce.
