Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Samba

To the cynical viewer, the glut of yellow cards this weekend will have had Christmas shopping and midweek cup tie written all over them, in ten-foot-high neon lettering, while the solitary red card smacks a little of both.

The weekend’s sending off, in the second half of Spurs’ Sunday humiliation at home to Liverpool, looked harsh from my already uncomfortable seat in the White Hart Lane stands. A high boot from Paulinho, connecting with Luis Suárez’s chest in an effort to reclaim a bouncing ball in midfield, incurred the wrath of referee Jonathan Moss, who was well within his rights to brandish red. The Brazilian is set to serve a three-match ban and will miss the Capital One Cup tie against West Ham in midweek, in addition to Gameweek 17 and 18 showdowns with Southampton and West Brom.

Also missing midweek cup action through suspension will be Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Spurs captain Michael Dawson. Their timely fifth yellow cards will now clear both to play through the busy Christmas league schedule without the threat of missing action. Is it too much to ask that their form will improve with the monkeys off their backs? Fans of their clubs and Fantasy managers alike will certainly hope so.

If that wasn’t enough, two more players also moved their quota of yellows past the ban threshold in Sunday action, as both Gabby Agbonlahor and Angel Rangel slipped from the tightrope. The duo picked up cautions against Manchester United and Norwich respectively and, having been knocked out of the Capital One Cup, they will serve these bans in Gameweek 17 instead – Villa, without a goal in their last two games, travel to Stoke, while Swansea face a rampant Everton.

Playing the long game in the build-up to the busy Christmas schedule, and maybe planning some time with the family through an enforced rest, there are no fewer than eight new faces donning their plimsolls and digging out their balancing sticks for Gameweek 17.

The Saturday fixtures saw fourth yellow cards for Michael Essien (in just his fourth domestic start of the season) and for Marouane Chamakh at Stamford Bridge, meanwhile at St James’ Park, bookings for Cheick Tioté and Morgan Schneiderlin meant they also clambered onto the Tightrope. Phillippe Senderos and the fit-again David Silva complete the Saturday sextet, with the latter’s caution perhaps sounding a note of caution to those looking to cover Sergio Agüero’s injury with the scheming Spaniard.

Sunday filled the final two places from the weekend, with José Cañas and Kyle Walker threatening to enforce additional rotation upon their managers as they await the draw for the next round of the squad-sapping Europa League.

Finally to close out the suspension shake-up, we have a number of players returning to the fold having served out their sequestration last weekend. Fabian Delph, Chico Flores, James McCarthy, Yohan Cabaye and Jonathan Walters are all now ready to take their places once again this week.

I'm not sure it will since they'll have no Aguero, which is a pretty major loss considering the form he's been in. Jovetic is far from an able replacement especially considering he has played veeeeery few minutes with the boys.

Bottom of last page so reposting:

Really tempted to get Walcott in for a hit. But this is what is bothering me.
Is he really nailed on to start every game during the Christmas period? Cazorla, Ozil, Walcott, Podolski and Wilshere are essentially fighting for 3 spots. You guys not worried about rotation?

Looking at I think isn't it just typical for JT to get points away to Arsenal? On paper though he's a bit dangerous to play but I agree that he's your best option. Looks okay, more so if no hits taken.

Honestly? Because I want to change the team quicker than what I have FTs available for. If Aguero hadn't gotten injured I'd probably wait, but I can't help thinking Mirallas will pay off the -4 going forward and next weeks FT is already earmarked Walcott in. Plan is JT & Sess -> Chester & Walcott (-4).

Feel Mirallas will be a great differential with Everton's fixtures and Deluf + Baines out (nailed + more set-pieces). I am struggling to find a way to get both Wally and Mirallas in soon that doesn't involve hits.

A conversation point that has probably been discussed, but was Moyes holding Everton back?

Everton have always been known (under Moyes) as a side who have a never say die attitude, a side that always try and get back in to a game if they were losing. Now, however, they look to be a side that wants to really kill off a team. Yes the basic styles of Moyes and Martinez are different, but now their attitude towards a game seems to have, if possible, gotten better. Passing and possession is one thing, but this new get as many goals as you can thing is both wonderful for the fans and Joe Public. Before they had a plucky guile about them, now they have retained that and gained a whole lot more. Each member of the team seems to believe if they do well enough in training or on the pitch they have a chance, I'm sure you can fill in those names yourself. What's more, the loan system, something that seemed so neglected in the past by the rotten half of Liverpool, has been embraced and to great affect. Shrewd buys and ever shrewder loans have pieced together something quite formidable, and the lack of purchasing in the open market at Old Trafford has lit a spot light on that.
Did Everton never knock on the door they always threatened to because the team wasn't complete, playing well enough or both? And if so, why not? Who's to blame? Is there any blame to be handed out or did Moyes really do as good a job we all thought he was doing a year ago? Or was he plateauing? Has the United job given great opportunity for a bucket of water to be thrown in the face of the club and waken them up to their true potential?
I look forward to seeing what will happen at the scum, and if this is just a lucky run or if a man who was very much in the running for the mighty Liverpool job, can lead them to glory, I hope not.
But my God, you just have to love Martinez, "you silver tongued devil you".

To be fair, Everton were bottom half team when Moyes started there. But they probably had plateaued and he'd gone as far as he ever would. At best a solid Europa League team.

Which is what he has now...

Had a fair bit of success with the old transfers of late. Coleman in this week, 10 points, Ward(Palace) in last week, clean sheet and a bap, Rooney & Hazard in GW13, brace for Rooney, goal and assist for Hazard! So satisfying when it pays dividends from the off

Just a thought on the Aguero rush to sell but have people considered that his price drop potential is limited. Given the numbers involved, it's safe to assume that the required sales will be there today for the price to fall. And some. As the price falls more will jump off the bandwagon and he'll drop again. Whether his third drop is Thursday or Friday, there will be a vast excess of sales over 100% so a lot of sales won't affect the price drop at all. Finally, Saturday will see him drop again probably as the majority of active owners ditch him. This will leave him at 12.2m but now sales will drop off. Even if he drops twice more, those who bought at 11.3m or less will lose money on the trade.
