The Digest – Gameweek 16

Our last look at the Gameweek just gone includes Arsenal’s resurgent winger, the step up in performances from the Red half of Merseyside and the potential upturn in Fantasy prospects over at the Lane in light of Andre Villas-Boas’ dismissal.

The Player

It’s been a long time coming but finally, after 16 Gameweeks of the season, Theo Walcott is back in the Fantasy frame. While the main source of Fantasy discussion from Saturday’s nine-goal Etihad thriller centres around Sergio Aguero’s calf injury, the Gunners wide-man served notice that he’s set to offer us a timely differential prospect for our five-man midfields. Since recovering from abdominal surgery, Walcott had previously chipped in with a couple of assists over four brief sub appearances but his manager’s reluctance to hand him a first start since Gameweek 4 ensured most were happy to steer clear. Until now.

Walcott’s brace at the Emirates wasn’t enough to prevent his side slipping to a stunning 6-3 defeat but you have to put it in context – City had conceded just twice in the previous seven home games under Manuel Pellegrini. As Olivier Giroud continues to toil up top for the league leaders, with two strikes from open play in his last 10 league starts, Walcott’s eye for goal looks vital as Wenger looks to steady the ship – all the more so given that he’s set to welcome Chelsea to the Emirates next weekend.

With Aaron Ramsey finding a place in over 62% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) sides and fellow Gunner Mesut Ozil also fourth most popular midfielder with an ownership over 27%, Walcott – currently sitting in just 4% of sides – looks an ideal alternative to a template that has barely changed over the season.

Given that both Ramsey and Ozil chipped in with an assist apiece on Saturday, their owners will be happy to hold, allowing those Fantasy managers on the lookout for new blood to benefit from Walcott’s acquisition. After the Chelsea game, it’s West Ham, Newcastle, Cardiff, Villa and Fulham for Wenger’s side – a schedule that could well see the bandwagon pick up speed as Walcott looks to belatedly make a difference to our Fantasy campaigns and keep the Gunners on course for the title.

The Team

On Sunday afternoon, Liverpool rolled up to the Lane without their skipper on board for the first time this term. Sidelined for a number of weeks with a hamstring injury, many felt Steven Gerrard’s absence would see the Merseysiders struggle – he has, after all, created more goalscoring chances than any other midfielder in the Premier League so far. The collective lack of faith was summed up by our Captain’s Poll, where Luis Suarez was no more than fifth and, with a single clean sheet in their previous 12 league fixtures, Brendan Rodgers’ side were far from favourites in the eyes of many.

What transpired was a performance so ruthless it left Tottenham without a manager by this time yesterday after Daniel Levy handed Andre Villas-Boas his marching orders. A shift to 4-3-3 saw Joe Allen and Lucas provide a defensive shield in front of the back-four and not only delivered a rare clean sheet, but also allowed Jordan Henderson to forage forward through the middle in support of Suarez and help himself to a goal and assist in the 5-0 rout. At 5.9, Henderson’s new central role has attracted plenty new suitors already this week after his season-high haul of 13 points, while Raheem Sterling (4.9) has now started each of the last four and found the net twice.

With Philippe Coutinho and Sterling supplying pace and trickery out wide, neither Gerrard or Daniel Sturridge were missed as Suarez found the time and space to dismantle yet another top-flight backline and serve up his seventh set of double figures in just 11 appearances. Averaging 12.3 points per game, the Uruguayan has taken our Fantasy expectations to a new level this season –for all his consistency, Robin van Persie managed “only” 6.9 ppg for United last time around – a tally that looks positively paltry by comparison.

It’s fair to say that providing Gerrard was fit, he’d have played on Sunday but a stroke of fate has afforded Rodgers the opportunity to tinker. Perhaps by default, he seems to have struck upon a set-up that affords his side the balance at both ends of the pitch that he’s been striving all season to achieve. Upcoming trips to City and Chelsea will certainly test that theory but it’s becoming more than apparent that Liverpool, like Suarez, are a different prospect altogether this season.

The Talking Point

The dismissal of Villas-Boas, just one day after Steve Clarke’s departure from West Brom, takes the number of clubs to have changed manager already this season to five. Palace, Fulham and Sunderland have, to differing degrees, all benefitted from their decisions to pull the plug on previous managers. Tony Pulis has made a real difference to the Eagles’ defence and has brought the likes of Julian Speroni, Joel Ward , Barry Bannan and even Marouane Chamakh onto our radars. Rene Meulensteen has reignited Dimitar Berbatov as a Fantasy force, whilst Sunderland have defeated Newcastle and City at the Stadium of Light and registered three clean sheets in the last six under Gus Poyet.

Whilst a trip to Southampton this weekend is by no means easy, the following four Gameweeks hand Tottenham the chance to bounce back from Sunday’s mauling. West Brom, Stoke and Palace all roll up to the Lane over that period and hint at a reason for optimism, allowing some of their main protagonists the chance to stake a claim for our consideration once again.

There’s no denying Tottenham toiled in attack but, despite their failings, still managed more shots than any other side in the Premier League in the first 16 Gameweeks. One look at the stats of a trio of their summer signings shows that the club aren’t lacking in firepower– Roberto Soldado scored 59 league goals in three seasons at Valencia, Erik Lamela managed 15 goals and five assists for Roma last year, whilst Christian Eriksen produced 17 goals and 36 assists in his final two seasons at Ajax. A bloated first-team squad led to continual tinkering from Villas-Boas and ultimately ensured that his numerous new acquisitions never had the opportunity to settle as first-team regulars – consistency of selection looks vital of Spurs are to improve.

At the back, it’s easy to forget that Spurs started the season with seven clean sheets in the first 11 matches, conceding just six goals over that period. The floodgates opened at City back in Gameweek 12 in a 6-0 defeat that Villas-Boas failed to properly recover from. With the Portuguese boss now banished, the slate can be wiped clean and potentially reignite our Fantasy interest in Tottenham’s potential as they look to regroup after Sunday’s humiliation at home.

I've expanded on my earlier idea of adjusting the season ticker settings for defenders and attackers to give more flexibility in what I want to contribute to the rankings.

This spreadsheet lets you cut and paste a user table from the members' area to choose any attributes that you want to factor into the season ticker. It is divided into Home and Away sections so remember to split your table. The tables I used are here but you can choose any attributes you like.

    Home http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4621/
    Away http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4626/

Paste the results into the spread and give a weighting to each attribute (expressed as a percentage). So if you are looking to buy a defender you might want to pull in the opposition stats for goals scored, chances created, big chances created etc and then give them different weightings. If you want to buy an attacker you'll be interested in opposition clean sheets, successful tackles and so on.

If an attribute is positive (e.g goals scored) put a 1 in rows 25 and 51 and if negative (chances conceded) put a zero.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhckzhyzXsRodFFrV3NRT2p4Y3BLWEU3Qkw3UWJfTFE&usp=sharing

Then paste the contents of cell A53 into the season ticker import and voila - your own rankings for the ticker.

If anyone is still reading, it calculates the difference to the average of each stat and multiplies it by the weighting to come up with a composite number. e.g. Arsenal have created 19 big chances at home this year and the average for teams at home is 10.05. Arsenal's value for this stat is 1.89 (89% over average) which is then multiplied by your weight to feed into the final number.

The final number, expressed as a percentage, is multiplied by 1100 as that is the neutral colour on the ticker.

You can have different attributes for home and away if you wish but order the teams in the same order in both home and away sections.

Incidently, do you know what the "out-of-the-box" season ticker values are based on? Also, the clean sheet/attacking points filters?

One for the scouts, not sure where the original values came from.

I had never noticed the attacking and clean sheet options in the ticker until I uploaded my own ones earlier. At that point I felt slightly foolish as the version at the time was quite similar, but now there is more flexibility over where the values come from.

I agree, it's handy because you can now compare it to any dataset.

I also feel quite foolish, because I didn't see the "import" option. I have been making my own rankings in excel from the season ticker, and using these as a factor in my own local tables e.g. if a team has been scoring well and they were previously ranked 2, I assume it will be a bit worse if they are now rank 6 etc.

This approach is much more sensical.

I think it's very important in look at different stats when buying defenders and attackers which is what started me on this.

If I'm buying a defender I don't care how the upcoming opposition does at the back, I only care how many chances they create, how many goals they score etc. Vice versa when buying attackers.

I realised I'd been interpreting Home and Away incorrectly so the settings were reversed - fixed in the spreadsheet now.

One other problem is if teams have had different numbers of games home and away someone's stats will be at a disadvantage. Need to factor that in, one way is to begin in Time Played as a column and divide all other absolute stats by that to level the playing field.

You should most definitely shift Aguero out right away or you will lose all the money you have made on him as his price plummets. Rooney is the obvious option and is going up in price so fast he will make you some money. There will be a 0.6 swing in price by Saturday!

You'll be able to get him back as he'll drop in price, in fact that has already started, you'll have more worries if you hang on to him while his price drops.

Why get rid? He is only out for a month.... SELL! he will drop in price by the time he gets fit. He will miss at least 4-5 gw which in fantasy time is a ton and will likely see his price drop by 0.5 if not more.

That is true, but he's the more attacking and at home. I don't think we have the players to become free scoring but there should be some sort of improvement with the managerial change. The differentials you've gone for aren't bad. Maybe just a couple too many of them. Can sort it out on Jan WC soon.

Myhill was decent, so Foster should be a good option.
I haven't looked at their fixtures for January & beyond, or how well they rotate with other teams... come January I imagine there will be a flood of analysis that we can all sink out teeth to into.

Not sure if anyone still subscribes to the myth of kick off time having an impact on the volume of goals you can expect but if anyone wants any stats in particular pulled out I have a decent volume of data in a spreadsheet and I can slice it pretty much any way you like.

Data points are: Day of the Week, Kick Off Time, General Time (morning, lunchtime, afternoon, evening), Season, Calendar Year, Home Team, Away Team, Home Team Goals, Away Team Goals and Total Goals.

I can save you all the time and bother of actually interrogating the data and tell you that whenever the sample size is large enough there is no significant difference in the number of goals scored at different times of the day or on different days of the week.

My data goes back to the 2000/01 season so covers more than 5,000 games. (Prior to this the data on kick off times is unreliable)

Was being lazy and not selecting any 'highlights' myself but here goes:

The average goals per game since the start of 2000/01 is 2.64
The average goals per game this season is 2.63
The average goals per game on a Saturday 3pm kick off since 2000/01 is 2.62
The average goals per game on a Sunday 4pm since 2000/01 is 2.67
The average goals per game on a Saturday 12:45pm since 2000/01 is 2.71

        Etc.

It really is very uniform other than where there have only been a handful of games played in a given timeslot.

If he went through with Suarez(c), I'm surprised he didn't repost that comment on the boards

The early Saturday kick off games this season have resulted in 40 goals. That's an average of 3 goals a game (as there was no early game for gameweeks 11, 13, and 14).

      None have remained goal less.

Indeed, this is why I'm careful to caveat my statements with the 'large enough sample size' gubbins. 13 games isn't enough to be conclusive in my eyes, the fact the average was 2.6 before the Man City - Arsenal game highlights that.

You can prove anything if you choose the right data set 😉

I would only add that for many FFSers, the psychology of having a captain fail early and then being on these boards or watching later matches for the resulting torment was perhaps a driving force for some to avoid it, consciously or not.

With Suarez as the FFS uber-captain, maybe not many on here will care as much about his performance and they'll be emboldened to let logic rule out over emotion (though maybe that's still emotion, now that I think of it).

I agree with all of this, I never had much of a problem with anyone who just feared a captain fail at the start of the weekend for those reasons, there have definitely been posters in the past who would repeatedly claim that kick off time affected the possibility of a game being high or low scoring though. Those are the folks I'm targeting 😉

Agreed, he just seems to be one of the only ones with a goal threat spark on the screen as well as in the stats tables. Hope he can get a spot, but that is quite a congested midfield.

I remember lots of people saying doubling up on Baines and Coleman was obvious when they had their first run of good fixtures. Not many did and I've not heard anyone say they're pleased with how it went. Coleman is (was?) a bargain. Baines isn't. Two of them isn't more of a good thing, it's one great thing plus one not so great thing.

Yeah, you were right that Coleman's prospects improved with Baines out, he's been a wonder. Though Oviedo has got forward massively too so maybe it isn't just one going forward at the expense of the other.

If Baines back is bad for Coleman, it becomes two not so great things and the argument for a double up is even weaker. Baines was hardly essential when he was playing.

Baines' attacking points have not been significantly better than Coleman's though. One of them was priced as a midpriced defender at the start of the season, the other was priced 2.0 more expensive.

For more than 3.0 less you can pick up a defender from teams that also really care about cleanies and are getting them - Cardiff, Palace, Southampton (once the fixtures clear up), heck, for 2.5 less, you can get Evans.
