The Community Round Up

With the first Wildcards of January being fluttered, the community was abuzz with advice on the best picks, rotation pairings and formations for our newly-assembled teams. Elsewhere this week, the community attempted to decipher the secrets of some of the most consistent Fantasy managers around – is it skill or pure luck at work? We revisit this and other discussions, before calling in on the progress of a variety of tournaments taking place within the FFS community.

The Hottest Topics

With the January Wildcard available this week, there was a flurry of hot topics looking at the various strategies and key acquisitions available. Triggerlips’s post was one of the week’s most popular and contains some valuable advice such as anticipating price falls and delaying the Wildcard to the final Gameweek. Despite such advice, some Fantasy managers simply could not wait to start tinkering with their sides. Kingston and Wakey were amongst the early Wildcarders to make themselves known during our discussion.

Good on Zidane’s Floor was also on hand to offer valuable input on some of the potential January wildcard bargains. This includes those who are set to return from injury, with Southampton’s goalkeeper Artur Boruc and Liverpool’s left back Jose Enrique amongst the array of names offered up. Meanwhile, GK was busy researching wildcard formations and has supplied a list of some of the key bargains to earmark during the January sales.

The “ubers”, a term used to describe those who favour a very cheap defence, were also out in force this week in an attempt to convince Fantasy managers of the benefits of rotating a budget backline. In Koflok’s guide to cheap defensive rotation he also takes into account the need to include at least one premium defender, with Everton’s Seamus Coleman the pick of the bunch. Around Coleman he recommends rotating defenders from, among others, Hull, Stoke and Newcastle.

Another of our most popular wildcard posts during the last week was this epic guide to defender and goalkeeper rotations from Innsie.

Elsewhere, Granville had his say, stating that the Wildcard could prove the perfect time to ditch this season’s favoured 3-4-3 formation and opt instead for a 3-5-2 line-up with a cheap striker. Among the budget forward options he’s considering are Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez and Norwich’s Gary Hooper.

Gargamel’s Gargatron, the tool which helps Fantasy managers analyse their captaincy and bench decision, has been widely used among the community. He returned with a post this week to tell us of some updates, including the ability to show how far away from a particular rank you are in terms of points. Depressing reading for some – Mark should certainly steer clear.

Meanwhile, Lee AFC spotted that certain managers, such as our live Hall of Fame leader Evs and last year’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) winner Spiderm4tt, seem to be achieving an incredible level of consistency. He asked whether they are just lucky or among the most skilful FPL players around. Luck vs Skill – an age old debate and a definite can of worms.

The Community Tournaments

FFS UEFA’s league competitions have ended. Last week we had just enough time to reveal that our moderator Evs had scooped the English Premier League crown. The full list of winners also include rest of Europe winner Djerbil, Ligue 1 champion GoonerByron and Bundesliga victor Billy Ketsu. In addition, two other members of the Fantasy Football Scout team emerged victorious, with our resident physio expert Facer scooping the Serie A crown and moderator Athletico Timbo taking the title of La Liga winner. The FFS UEFA Council has also revealed that it has no plans for any further league competitions but instead will concentrate on tournaments such as its Beach Soccer World Cup.

Those topping In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues are Evs, Bootsy, Athletico Timbo, Billy Ketsu, Jambo17 and Koneheads.

Thomass‘ Big Bash League Tournament has now reached the knockout stage. In Gameweek 22 the semi-finals will take place where Evs and fellow moderator Torres Magic‘s Sydney Sixers take on our Sky game expert D1sable and BlueLion, aka Perth Scorchers. The other semi-final will feature Thomass and Giggs Boson‘s Sydney Thunder against Melbourne Stars, the team name of Pleased to Michu and Rohan.

In Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing competition 35 managers left, with 271 remaining. Blue Teets leads his After Xmas League. His Millionaire Club & January Wildcard League start in GW21. Codes to all TM’s leagues can be found here.

What is more important, Arsenal or Chelsea cover?

I only have 1FT and can't afford Ozil or Hazard in one go, so if Walcott is out would you go Oscar, Cazorla or neither and take a hit for Hazard/Ozil

Keep Walcott and upgrade your 5th mid or 4th defender if you're unhappy playing them.

What would you do if walcott is out for a while:
    A. Sign Eriksen which means I can buy Aguero without a hit later
    B. Sign Cazorla or other premium and bring Aguero in with the wildcard

    Chirces, kos, sagna, Baines, Chester

    G.Ramirez, özil, Oscar, hazard, eriksen

Ramirez is a great potentiall but it might be stretching it too far....
Can't you do Marshall instead of Davies? Good to have 2 keepers that actually play and you'll get a nice rotation the rest of the season.
You have extreme money in the defence and 2 maybes in front, go JRod instead of one and put the money on the other? Sagna to, lets say Bardsley or something in that pricerange will give you even more money to use on that 2nd striker...
But withvthat said i like your defence cause thats where i think thediffs will be found for many, the big teams will tighten up their defences as season progresses

Decent chance Ramsey will be fit for GM 21, so straight choice between him and Eriksen.
Eriksen could flourish under Sherwood but tough to look past Ramsey esp with his fixtures.

My concern there would be Newcastle fail to score 25% of the time yet they feature a few times there.

Looking at stats for the PL season so far with my own discretion I need to thrash something out.

Hull Villa Stoke Cardiff Palace Sunderland and W Ham have failed to score in 40% or more of their games.

I'm looking at the games these teams play away as high percentage chance of cs.

Newcastle are only there 3/32 fixtures. It's hard to get a better rotation at their budget price but it depends how much you're willing to invest in your defence.

that's the age old question to uber or not to uber? For me defenders were buy cheaper and get some ammo up front yet we see this year more baps than ever for the back line. I would say as a rule never double up (even with keepers) and get your rotation home/away addressed right for the best probability of success. How much you pay depends on your team value but I don't pay for anyone over 6mil. I might have six mill players now but I didn't buy them at that price.

they leak goals and you get little from both? Not a personal fan of doubling up but loving the rotation combos. FYI though despite Cardiff having an easier time at home now the new manager is much more attack focused, could be holey at the back but worth watching the front men for Cardiff for that reason.

I would have too....... And looked stupid afterwards...

I actyally don't get the extreme fear ppl have against doubling up.
I started the season with double defenders from Southampton and Villa and Coleman as an always playing 3rd. Changed it later when Fonte broke to double Everton and still Villa. That then changed last week as Clark got susp, now i only have double Everton but it may well end up with to double's again....

Yeah i think it is the right thing to do.
It is just that one has to do the homework and study fixtures and stay away from teams like City and Chelsea that you never can be sure about who will play, but a lot of midtable cluds like Everton, Newcastle and this year Southampton are safe, we know which ones will play.....

They are a lot more expensive though tbf. Zaba and Baines are good for attacking points and so we are only talking about one cheap def and one cheap keeper. They have good fixtures every week and is splitting the risk any more profitable?

          Point taken.

On the risk splitting is open to greater profit I'd imagine.

One goal two clean sheets smoked compared to a goal a clean sheet.

I've been there this year it hasn't worked n it has I don't think I like it personally.

Tbh Rover I have had some decent money tied up in defence this season and my returns have been crap so far. Nothing worse than when Terry and Ivanovic together got me 1 point, Kos early season was a mare as well. I'm thinking of the cheap route myself now. If it goes tits up at least I wont have too much invested to get annoyed about it.

Similar defence to me, WR. Considering GJ > Baines and doubling up with Coleman. As most have Coleman now it gives rivals a predicament. Third defender is Koscielny and will use Bardsley / Chester if any of my big mids get injured / rested.

So I have 5 yellow flags, not too dissimilar to many, except I have stupidly already used my FT to catch a rise.

    Walcott, Rooney, Cabaye, Distin, Baker

While I will wait for news before doing anything, which option do you prefer if Walcott is out for more than 2 weeks:

    (A) Taking a -8, and doing Walcott -> Silva and Rooney -> Adebayor (or Lukaku) leaving a whopping 7.4m itb. This might JUST see me through, as I would be able to field 11 at least.

    (B) Take the plunge and WC for the following team:

    GK: Davis, Boruc
DEF: Terry, Koscielny, Burner (Ward) (Chester)
MID: Ozil (Walcott if fit), Hazard, Silva, Gerrard (Colback)
    ATT: Suarez, JRod, Adebayor/Lukaku

Leaving enough in the bank to switch Ade/Luka to Aguero, at the expense of Gerrard -> Ramsey, in a week or two.

Personally, I can't help but like option B, but I dislike the thought of using my WC in the first week, and I would like to know what others think.

Defense looks very solid and I personally like the eriksen differential pick. Do you have a plan to afford aguero if he goes mental though? Also, although it is mostly subjective, I wouldn't advise going for both Lallana and JRod, one or the other I think, given that Southampton are hardly the most prolific scorers.

Another handy tip for wildcarders is try not to pick too many players from one club.

By all accounts the weather could turn very cold and snowy this winter. Those cheap Cardiff players may look less attractive when Wales is under a foot of snow.

I feel like being on my WC and so few price rises happening, I should get Henderson, but he seems distinctly uninspiring. Not cheap enough to be a cheap 5th, not heavy hitting enough as a main four mid.

This is the FPL equivalent of a "first world problem", though I guess all FPL problems are first world problems.

I got Sterling right before his price rise. It's like musical chairs of players I don't really want who won't rise twice. I was hoping someone would go on a haul in the Cup and then I could take my .1 profit. I think I'm thinking a bit too small and losing the plot, but yeah, you're right--the slow-transfer landscape is my oyster...

I was in Africa 3 or so weeks ago when I saw while passing a hotel that Aguero was out for up to 8 weeks. I desperately searched for Internet connection, and then I opened my eyes and realised that there is far more to life than a simple FPL transfer, and went on to enjoy my eye opening 3rd world experience sound in the knowledge that Aguero was sitting in my team getting 0.

As for Henderson, it's a no from me 😛

I don't see any reason past fixtures and price tbh. That's why I think I will be sticking to Soton GK's (they are a much better team, with very strong fixtures up to GW 30, and they look good for CS' once Boruc is back). Plus I will just have Burner as part of my template 3 man rotating defense, so his gametime in my team will be limited only to good home fixtures.

          That's the question innit?

And no easy answer, unless you go for someone like Mutch (that's who I have) and hope that the new manager's desire to play an attacking style helps his returns continue.

Personally I'd try to find the 0.4 and just go with Adebayor, who you can play every week.

Atm, my WC draft includes Adebayor and JRod alongside Suarez, with enough itb to switch Ade for Aguero whenever he comes back.

My reasoning being that as a short term punt, Adebayor at 4.1% ownership is a differential worth considering, especially given that he plays Palace at Home this week.

As for JRod, well he's the obvious cheap, nailed on 3rd striker with potential for goals. If you want alternatives you could look at Hooper at Norwich who is in good form, for 6.1, or even Gouffran at 6.4, but to me JRod is the pick of the bunch at that price.

atm, i dont have enough funds ITB to make a straight ft swap ade > aguero.
u recon that i need to have enough funds itb for kun so that i dont need to do a hit minus 4 right for KUn?

a minus 4 hit is approx = to 20,000 slots in Overal rank.

think ill have to do jrod + Ade as well. only way can do ade > kun straight for FT IN 2 WEEKS.

u dont recomend doing a minus 4 hit for Kun when he comes? reason being i was worried kun will take another 3 weeks and mayb wait 1 gw to see how many min he'll play no? that means 3-4 week of gw, thats a lot of pts.

btw, who is your 5th chap 4.5 mid? i cant afford mutch so thinking amalfitano 4.5 who has come down a lot or bannan (whose minutes are so erratic) or jwp

Depending on the situation with injuries, I may have no choice but to take a hit to get aguero in, though if there is any way around, I would always advise that. It depends, what did you have in mind as an avenue to Aguero for a hit?

As for the cheap mid, I am really stretched to the limit funds wise so I can't really afford more than 4.2 unfortunately. I chose colback, as he is probably the most likely of the 4.2 midfielders to get a full game more often than not, though none are attractive options. You could try Noone of Cardiff for 4.3? Started the last 5, scored in the cup and did well in the championship last year (something like 8 goals).

if i go Bony then to get kun would require a hit. think bony for 2-4 gw over JRod is not worth it , no?

I can't believe there is not at least one change an active player would like to make to their squad: a better back-up goalie, a better 4th / 5th df rotation. Not to mention the opportunity to build tv with a few double risers. So I am guessing the answer is no.

in truth i'll probably make 2-3 changes with the card, barring added injuries.

Anyone going with Baines + Coleman as they seem to be the 2 best attacking defenders in the game and are as good as any mid price midfielder? or is the loading on 1 defense too much?

I'm going with both vs Norwich if Walcott is ok.

with the wildcard giving you the opportunity to change your whole team I don't know why you'd really want to double up in defense..

        Because everyone has Coleman...

And in my case, it's a FT not a WC. Can't speak for Mr Flibbles.

Fixtures turn against that idea for me, playing my WC for GW23 or 24.

It's a bit too pricey for me. I think the likes of Zabaleta/Koscielny/Sagna/Azpilcueta will be in the same ball park at a 1 million less.

Of course, every night before I go to sleep I repeat, "coleman can't keep scoring every week, he just CAN'T," until I almost believe it.

Its going alright. No clean sheets is killing it though.

If you didn't get Coleman until 6.5 (now 6.7), and also perhaps foolishly went for early WC, would you just go for Baines at 7.4?

Essentially 0.8 for set pieces and decent differential (1,400,000 v 430,000).

Yeah I think if you got Coleman low 5m mark grand but 6.5m equalised vs all your rivals go for the throat get Baines.

Yes then I could drop all the other form players I have "Because they can't keep scoring can they" and get all the players who are doing nothing FPL wise "Because they must be due" Brilliant. I could have £30,000,000 in the bank too. 😉
