The Community Round Up

The shock news of Arsenal midfielder Theo Walcott’s long term injury left Wildcard plans and midfield lineups in tatters. Fortunately the community was on hand to rally round and provide a wealth of “Hot Topics” offering advice on how best to cope with his loss. Elsewhere, we examine how the community gave Ole Gunnar Solskjær a good going over plus provide an extended Community Tournament round-up featuring some rarely covered competitions, including one featuring some of the community’s most grizzled members.

The Hottest Topics

First off, World Cup motivation was the subject of Elninorules comprehensive list of players as he questioned whether their enthusiasm for an air ticket to Brazil could translate into Fantasy Football potential? A timely topic given Adam Johnson’s flurry this weekend.

That proved a welcome distraction from Wildcard fever which continues to sweep across the community, dominating discussion. Lachyas was among the latest to pen a guide to the Winter refresh. His look at the template Wildcard team includes a step by step guide, which builds around the “essential” Luis Suarez and identifies the cheap fifth midfielder as a vital component. Elsewhere, Evs decided to focus on the midfield big guns, asking whether we can afford to “go large” in the engine room and build around the “elites” that are Mesut Ozil and Eden Hazard.

The focus wasn’t all on goals and assists. Wildcard defenders also came in for some analysis with The Sarjeant’s informed post targeting those backline custodians with the most favourable run of home matches from Gameweek 24 onwards.

Talking of defenders, Dogba put forward a rather controversial post that pondered the merits of cashing in on the meteoric rise of Everton’s right-back Seamus Coleman.

The ubers, the term used to describe Fantasy managers that favour a cheap rotating backline, were also out in force to encourage others to look at budget defensive options. This week RonH asked the simple but often overlooked question, does rotating cheap defenders actually work?

Bucking the trend, Sporting a Beergut spoke up for those Fantasy managers resenting all the Wildcard talk and looking to make the most minor of changes. His post on the use of a so-called diet-wildcard provides low-fat food for thought for those who may have been planning major surgery.

Theo Walcott’s injury has undoubtedly rocked the community over the past week, with thousands in the market for a replacement. Ozil, Hazard and Yaya Toure were, of course, amongst the safe options touted by Beavis. Although Phaze 1 stirred the pot by asking, whether Toure could possibly keep up his relentless form.

Meanwhile, Matskm focused on the Arsenal midfield in more detail, pushing folk to take advantage of their form and kind run of fixtures to come.

The week also saw Cardiff unveil their new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær with one of our Norwegian community members, Slikk, on hand to give a thorough insight of the Norwegian’s managerial credentials and style.

Finally, Spencer sparked an interesting debate about how our mini-league rivalries influence our transfer decisions. Bentekkers was also investigating mini-leagues and has been busy developing a Google Chrome extension to give managers more details about their FPL leagues. Full details and link here.

The Community Tournaments

We start with the “Long and Winding Road” (LAWR) competition and among the league leaders going into Gameweek 21 were Christina who tops the Le Corbusier – Villa Savoye league. Evs continued to lead the Cloud Nine league and Champ stood proudly at the summit of the LAWR league entitled “Voicemail Slide”. LAWR’s organisers Doosra and Ginkapo have also announced early details of their “FA Cup of Tea” tournament, involving all 128 players in their head-to-head leagues across seven rounds. The competition starts in Gameweek 25 and the draw will take place in Gameweek 23.

Evs also topped the FFS Old Farts Club, a league dedicated to the community’s “older and wiser” members, but our moderator was in second in Team Senegoal’s league, behind Beric, ahead of this weekend.

Elsewhere, DonTheSpecialOne was in the lead of the The Puffinboy Memorial Cup, the league for veteran posters and named after one of Fantasy Football Scout’s very first regulars.

Kings of Lyon’s “Who wants to be a millionaire?” League is another tournament currently in progress. Set up back in Gameweek 8, this was earmarked for all those Fantasy managers that, at the time, were placed outside of the top million Fantasy Premier League players. The aim is to see how many can breach the Top 10k mark by Gameweek 38. Ahead of Gameweek 21, 60 of the 65 entrants were safely within the top one million and six are in the top 100,000. Amy Dexter leads the league with an overall rank of around 30,000.

In Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing league, 271 remained ahead of Gameweek 21 and he’s running three mid-season leagues to join, After Xmas, Millionaire Club and January Wildcard. Details here.

Meanwhile, at last I get to mention myself in this section, as ahead of Gameweek 21, I was in the lead in the FPL section of the Ironman league, a 12-strong league for those competing in the FPL, Metro and Sky Sports games. Gigging Order topped the Metro and Sky Sports components and remains in poll position for the title.

Finally, we’ve had a request from RonH to include the FFS Moderators and Contributors league standings. His interest is timely as, going into today’s games in Gameweek 21, Athletico Timbo had taken a shock lead over high-flying Evs with a bumper Saturday score of 60 points. Evs has since brought in 33 points today and trails Timbo by just a single point after our leader brought in another 17 points in Sunday’s games. Lower down, Granville was in 16th place, seven spots ahead of his ScoutCost co-host Mark. I daren’t say too much more on this – Mark will only edit it out.

Think this is pretty close to sported now. Thought and opinions welcome. £1500+ waiting for me at the end on the season if I get this right.

    Coleman, Koscielny, Kolarov

    Hazard, Silva, Ramsey, Eriksen

Is it not a bit risky with Ramsey and Aguero possibly not starting + Kolarov a rotation risk?

This time around, I wasn't in the mood and thought I would make that clear. Sure, it's all silly, but I guess that's internet forums for you. Having 9 of the starting 11 at home for the upcoming GW (Cabaye away to West Ham & Lukaku away to West Brom are also decent fixtures, to that extent) - is it worth holding off the WC for another week?

    Mertesacker Bardsley Ward
    Ozil Hazard Cabaye Silva
    Suarez Lukaku Negredo

    Vorm Clyne Chester Pozuelo

    my punts for WC:

    1) Keep Sterling in the hope he continues his involvement (seems ahead of Coutinho atm imo)

    2) Lolorov! why not, can always get Kos/Azizp/Distin in for him later!

    Bad? or reasonable?

I think Sterling is a rotation risk now. You would want a sure starter for your 5th mid.

Kolarov,i like him.Currently he is ahead of Azpi in my WC plans. Reason being Azpi gets only 6 with a CS.no baps . Wheras Kolarov has CS potential, attacking potential and BAPS potential.

Which of these combos do you think look best?

    A) Boruc & Kos - total cost of 10.3m
    B) Szczesny & Clyne - total cost of 10.1m

I got both in B cheaper than current prices.

I expect A) will be the popular answer, but I'm probably going with Davis as backup keeper, so wouldn't it be better to start Szczesny every week and rotate Clyne, rather than having to start Boruc every week?

    Rest of defence would be:

    xxx, Davis
    Terry, Kolarov, xxx, Ward, Chester

Test Eagles Wild Card Run Down

As it stands this week here's a quick run-down on the essentials, options and differentials for pulling the trigger on a wildcard this GW (albeit with the results of tonight's game still at large).

    GOALKEEPERS

The cheap rotating pairs seem to be the most popular, and most effective, thus far ... as opposed to having an expensive GK to play every week with no coverage as a second. Decent rotating options include:

Mannone, Speroni and Boruc rotating with Krul, Szczesny or Marshall

    DEFENDERS

Essential: Mertsesacker / Koscielny, Coleman, Terry, Kompany / Zabaleta / Kolarov
Second-tier: Fonte / Lovren, Jagielka / Baines, Chiriches / Dawson, Caulker, Evra (when fit)
Budget: Ward / Gabbidon, Chester, Whittacker, Olsson, Bardsley, Hudson, Williamson
Differential: Azpilicueta, Skrtl, Rafael, Santon, Brown, Walker, McAuley

    MIDFIELDERS

Essential: Hazard, Ozil, Silva / Yaya, Gerrard
Second-tier: Lallana, Eriksen, Oscar, Ramsey, Navas, Cabaye,
Budget: Januzaj, Mutch (when fit), Sidwell, Redmond, Whittingham, Kim, Puncheon, Sterling, Arnautovic, Shelvey, Bentelab, Morrison
Differential: Mirallas, Henderson, A Johnson, Livermore, Dempsey, Osman, Bacuna, Cazorla

    FORWARDS

    Essential: Suarez, Aguero
Second-tier: Rooney (when fit), Sturridge, Giroud, Negredo, Welbeck, Adebayor
    Budget: Rodriguez, Chamakh, Berahino, Berbatov
Differential: Hooper, Crouch, Bony, Benteke (when fit), Torres (cough cough), Elmander

This, of course, is in my humble opinion ... am taking suggestions!

    Etheridge / Mignolet
    Coleman / Wilson / Turner / Clyne / Dawson
    Sterling / Morrison / Cabaye / Özil / Hazard
    Suárez / Lukaku / Negredo

1 FT, £3.8m in the bank.

    a) use 1 FT
    b) take a hit
    c) save FT
    d) WC

Tricky one, I think you can get away with just the one FT if no new injuries pop up. There is a risk of course there, as your squad is looking pretty thin. Wait ill friday news and decide then.

Etheridge, Wilson, Turner and Dawson can all go from your defence. Sterling and Morrison, and possibly Cabaye from your midfield. Fine up front although Lukaku has Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea all away in the next 5.

Saying that, you can still field a decent team for next GW if you'd rather WC later.

TM, i really believe this week will see a lot of prices. You might get priced out of the team you want. And seeing there are quite a few changes to be made, why not WC now and save 2 trannies for the last week?

If your chasing the pack, does that affect your WC decisions? On one myself this week, and i'm torn between "safe" players, such as Silva, Ozil, Lukaku, Azpi, Rambo,Ericksen, Lallana, Cabaye etc, e.g. players that aren't quite essential, but are popular and will probably do well,

Or taking the odd risk, such as Willian, Kolarov, Welbeck, Adebayor etc, e.g player in form, but have question marks around them and greater risk.

Everyone will have a base of Aguero, Suarez, Coleman, the essentials, so you can hardly count them.

Well he passed to Kolarov, who did most of the hard work before crossing to Dzeko, so i wouldn't say 'created' at all. And otherwise he was poor. I watched the game. Read any decent match report they'll tell you, he was totally out of sorts. Just comparing to Hazard yesterday who was brilliant, scored, and got zilch.

I don't think the comparison to Hazard is fair, just for the BAPS sake. You do have to factor in the contribution of others in the team when it comes to BAPS.

This is true. Obviously just frustrated because i own Hazard :-). On paper i just look at the facts: Hazard - played brilliantly and scored a goal (no baps). Silva - Played poorly, no assists or goals (1 bap). I think i just need to let it go though 😆

    Heres the thing about wildcards

Team always looks great when you play them. Yet a few weeks later they can look terrible.
Reason is probbly because everybody includes the players that have performed well in the last few weeks.

Kolorov a prime example. A few weeks ago hardly anyone would of included him in a wildcard, A few good games and he suddenly this weeks hot choice. Doubtless in a few weeks time he will be rotated a few times , and people will be moaning that they wildcarded him in

WC Draft#1 - best way to use the extra cash?

If Puncheon is still on pens I quite like him and Januzaj for the next 4 weeks. After that I'd look to potentially upgrade to the likes of Lallana/Eriksen/Cabaye etc for my 4th mid.

    Szczesny(5.7), Davis
    Terry(6.0), Kolarov, Clyne(4.4), Ward(4.0), Chester
    Ozil(9.9), Silva, Ramsey, Puncheon, Januzaj
    Aguero, Sturridge, Suarez(11.1)

    Bank 1.5m*
(Numbers in brackets are my purchase prices)

    * I want to leave 0.7m cash in the bank for Ozil -> Hazard in GW23

Fair point. I guess it depends on what value you'd lose, but do you think there's any legs in starting with Ozil & Silva, then switching Silva -> Hazard next week, and then Ozil back to Silva in GW25?

Would mean losing Hazard for MUN, Silva for tot, CHE, and Ozil, for liv, MUN.

I have no real value tied up in any so am tempted with this...

So here's my first draft for a wild-card team to be put in place either next week or the week after:
    A)
    Boruc - Mannone
    Mertesacker - Distin - Clyne - B. Turner - Chester
    Özil - Silva - Hazard - Eriksen - Cabaye
    Suárez - Agüero - Adebayor
    [attack heavy, £0.1 left]

    or

    B)
    Boruc - Mannone
    Mertesacker - Distin - Clyne - Kompany - Azpilicueta
    Özil - Silva - Hazard - Januzaj - Cabaye
    Suárez - Negredo - Giroud
    [defence heavy, £0.2 left]

Which is preferable: A or B? Any likely improvements?

Nice ideas. I feel like I might have missed the Coleman boat and I'm hoping he doesn't score too much more this season. It's like Yaya Toure -- I think I've missed most of his points and the stats indicate he shouldn't keep up his current scoring rate.

    Morning DZ.

Was very tempted to WC last night. Baines might be a way to crawl up for me over Coleman. SHould jump on him asap. Here's the team, should I hit the WC button?

    Mannone / Harper

    Terry / Sagna / Koscielny / Vlaar / Chester

    Hazard / Silva / Ozil / Redmond / JWP

    Suarez / Lukaku / Adebayor

Have 3.5 in the bank too.

I was initially planning to WC in GW23. Tempted to do it this week though.

    TM and Absinthe,

Are you guys hitting the button?

I haven't seen Absinthe's team, but TM's team could do with some repairing I think, especially at the back.

40-60 on doing it. Could just take another hit to change 2 attackers.

What do you have in mind then? And is it worth taking a hit when you have the WC that you'l have to use soon now?

B for me, though you could go Rooney to Sturridge and Lallana/Eriksen to Silva?

        I could.. boils down to:

        Silva + Sturridge

        vs

        Ozil + Adebayor

      CS vs Ozil.
Ozil needs 10+ with CS & 6 without.
