The Community Round Up

The shock news of Arsenal midfielder Theo Walcott’s long term injury left Wildcard plans and midfield lineups in tatters. Fortunately the community was on hand to rally round and provide a wealth of “Hot Topics” offering advice on how best to cope with his loss. Elsewhere, we examine how the community gave Ole Gunnar Solskjær a good going over plus provide an extended Community Tournament round-up featuring some rarely covered competitions, including one featuring some of the community’s most grizzled members.

The Hottest Topics

First off, World Cup motivation was the subject of Elninorules comprehensive list of players as he questioned whether their enthusiasm for an air ticket to Brazil could translate into Fantasy Football potential? A timely topic given Adam Johnson’s flurry this weekend.

That proved a welcome distraction from Wildcard fever which continues to sweep across the community, dominating discussion. Lachyas was among the latest to pen a guide to the Winter refresh. His look at the template Wildcard team includes a step by step guide, which builds around the “essential” Luis Suarez and identifies the cheap fifth midfielder as a vital component. Elsewhere, Evs decided to focus on the midfield big guns, asking whether we can afford to “go large” in the engine room and build around the “elites” that are Mesut Ozil and Eden Hazard.

The focus wasn’t all on goals and assists. Wildcard defenders also came in for some analysis with The Sarjeant’s informed post targeting those backline custodians with the most favourable run of home matches from Gameweek 24 onwards.

Talking of defenders, Dogba put forward a rather controversial post that pondered the merits of cashing in on the meteoric rise of Everton’s right-back Seamus Coleman.

The ubers, the term used to describe Fantasy managers that favour a cheap rotating backline, were also out in force to encourage others to look at budget defensive options. This week RonH asked the simple but often overlooked question, does rotating cheap defenders actually work?

Bucking the trend, Sporting a Beergut spoke up for those Fantasy managers resenting all the Wildcard talk and looking to make the most minor of changes. His post on the use of a so-called diet-wildcard provides low-fat food for thought for those who may have been planning major surgery.

Theo Walcott’s injury has undoubtedly rocked the community over the past week, with thousands in the market for a replacement. Ozil, Hazard and Yaya Toure were, of course, amongst the safe options touted by Beavis. Although Phaze 1 stirred the pot by asking, whether Toure could possibly keep up his relentless form.

Meanwhile, Matskm focused on the Arsenal midfield in more detail, pushing folk to take advantage of their form and kind run of fixtures to come.

The week also saw Cardiff unveil their new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær with one of our Norwegian community members, Slikk, on hand to give a thorough insight of the Norwegian’s managerial credentials and style.

Finally, Spencer sparked an interesting debate about how our mini-league rivalries influence our transfer decisions. Bentekkers was also investigating mini-leagues and has been busy developing a Google Chrome extension to give managers more details about their FPL leagues. Full details and link here.

The Community Tournaments

We start with the “Long and Winding Road” (LAWR) competition and among the league leaders going into Gameweek 21 were Christina who tops the Le Corbusier – Villa Savoye league. Evs continued to lead the Cloud Nine league and Champ stood proudly at the summit of the LAWR league entitled “Voicemail Slide”. LAWR’s organisers Doosra and Ginkapo have also announced early details of their “FA Cup of Tea” tournament, involving all 128 players in their head-to-head leagues across seven rounds. The competition starts in Gameweek 25 and the draw will take place in Gameweek 23.

Evs also topped the FFS Old Farts Club, a league dedicated to the community’s “older and wiser” members, but our moderator was in second in Team Senegoal’s league, behind Beric, ahead of this weekend.

Elsewhere, DonTheSpecialOne was in the lead of the The Puffinboy Memorial Cup, the league for veteran posters and named after one of Fantasy Football Scout’s very first regulars.

Kings of Lyon’s “Who wants to be a millionaire?” League is another tournament currently in progress. Set up back in Gameweek 8, this was earmarked for all those Fantasy managers that, at the time, were placed outside of the top million Fantasy Premier League players. The aim is to see how many can breach the Top 10k mark by Gameweek 38. Ahead of Gameweek 21, 60 of the 65 entrants were safely within the top one million and six are in the top 100,000. Amy Dexter leads the league with an overall rank of around 30,000.

In Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing league, 271 remained ahead of Gameweek 21 and he’s running three mid-season leagues to join, After Xmas, Millionaire Club and January Wildcard. Details here.

Meanwhile, at last I get to mention myself in this section, as ahead of Gameweek 21, I was in the lead in the FPL section of the Ironman league, a 12-strong league for those competing in the FPL, Metro and Sky Sports games. Gigging Order topped the Metro and Sky Sports components and remains in poll position for the title.

Finally, we’ve had a request from RonH to include the FFS Moderators and Contributors league standings. His interest is timely as, going into today’s games in Gameweek 21, Athletico Timbo had taken a shock lead over high-flying Evs with a bumper Saturday score of 60 points. Evs has since brought in 33 points today and trails Timbo by just a single point after our leader brought in another 17 points in Sunday’s games. Lower down, Granville was in 16th place, seven spots ahead of his ScoutCost co-host Mark. I daren’t say too much more on this – Mark will only edit it out.

I think everyone's suddenly trying to find extra cash for Sturridge over Ade and that makes Özil look like a luxury. I'm holding onto him though.

Two different double-ups looking tempting - Aguero & Negredo or Suarez & Sturridge.

Either one puts Aguero at least 2FTs out of reach for me (or a hit).

Ok lads here is a difficult one:

Keep Lukaka or keep Ade? I have the cash to upgrade to Studge. Looks like Lukaka is better option but more expensive too. Ade had awful game, attacking wise against Palace. zero shots on goal too. But I would love to have Ade in 3 weeks time for the City home game. He is assured for a brace in that game 😉

    Thoughts?

He's a consistent performer in a VERY attacking side. 23 shots on goal from Everton this week. Wide-men and fullbacks are some of the best in the league. Supply is excellent.

But it's close - he, like Ade, can frustrate.

    Former Stars:

With the likes of Aguero & Ramsey coming back from injury in a few days time and yesterday's showing of Sturridge, do you plan to get back to SAS (Suarez-Aguero-Sturridge) to your team & a mid-priced to a budget 4th/5th rotating midfielder or just get a 4th big mid and get a decent 3rd striker?

For those who already used the JanWC, do you have plans to get any of them?

It did work for me a few GWs ago when I put it on Wally instead, and also missed another opportunity with Wally a couple of GWs ago, but still guess we've got to play the odds, and more often than not think we'll lose out as opposed to make headway.

People seem to think that if you get Sturridge as well then if you captain someone else and Suarez goes on fire then you will manage to at least cover his points, limiting the damage, but if you look at the times they have played together that has only happened a couple of times so don't see it as being a good alternative really.

I've just seen the Tiote disallowed goal.

As someone who didn't have a City defender, and whose Rival and Cup Opponent both had a City defender..... it pains me to say that when I did my refereeing exams I was always taught that exact situation was offside as the attacker is interfering with play.

Whether the rule is fair, or whether the interpretation/training is correct, is questionable. But I believe that's what referee's understand the rule to be.

      How come Laz?

Gouffran wasn't obstructing Hart's view and there's no "gesture" towards the ball.

I am going from memory based on the training I had, but I think the rationale was something to do with the opponent's presence distracts the goalkeeper.

You also have to consider that the rule was changed to prevent ridiculous incidences of when a goal is scored but is ruled offside because an attacker is somewhere by the corner flag. I doubt it was ever intended for an attacker to be within the 6 yard box.

That said, it does feel harsh because Hart was not getting anywhere near that! I probably prefer the old rule to be honest. It's not black and white anymore and I think FIFA mucked around with the rule for little benefit really.

That's not the rule now. It only applies if the player is obstructing the vision of the keeper. It's not about peripheral vision or distraction in this case. The rule is pretty clear.

I don't think the rule has changed since I passed my exams.

Like I said, I am only explaining how I was taught the rules of the game as a trainee referee, as I thought it would be of interest to some people.

          Sure.
          Here is the rule anyway

          Interfering with an opponent :-
If an attacker interferes with an opponent by either preventing them from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent's line of vision or movements or making a gesture or movement which deceives or distracts an opponent, then they are offside.

          I'm 99% sure that he didn't interfere.

            Thanks, I know the rule.

I'm sure, based on the training that I had, that the refereeing fraternity on the whole will consider the Newcastle player to be offside.

I'll tell you what they would probably say too.....

The Newcastle player, by moving out of the way of the flight of the ball, deceived the goalkeeper. If he did not move out of the way then the ball would have hit him, thus he has interfered with play.

Common sense says that Hart would never have got to that ball in a million years, deception or not, so Gouffran couldn't have possibly interfered with play.

Anyway all the ex-referees said the decision was wrong so that's good enough for me.

I agree that Hart would not have got there, but I don't think that is really a consideration under the rule.

Gouffran had to move out of the way of the ball for it to be a goal. He has made a movement whilst in an offside position that has affected play.

That's interesting about the ex-referees, who was it? I would like to see what they said.

Seems like we're going back in time with the whole doubling up on Sturridge thing.

Most people went against it earlier this season because we think Suarez will hog up all the points. Surprisingly, Sturridge pre-Suarez had 6.2 ppg and post-Suarez 6.8 ppg.

But will Liverpool score 5 goals every week though?

not boasting with those points, though: I'm "reasonably happy" mostly because I think my minileague opponents didn't really get advantage by using their wildcards. I'm not losing ground to them now and think their teams ain't really to be envied. And I still have a wildcard in my pocket. 😉

    Is Aguerro really that essential?

How long will it take for him to be up and running at his best/pre-injury form? Granted he is one of the finest strikers in the PL for a long time, still think it will take him a few weeks to get up to tempo.

For those who are struggling to carry 3 big name strikers - S/A with Sturridge/Ade/Lukaku/Negredo, isn't it better to go with Suarez and two of the above (Sturridge/Ade/Lukaku/Negredo), instead of Suarez/Aguerro and a cheapie (JRod/Hooper etc)?

Will life without Aguerro really be that dangerous with good cover (silva/yaya) and a good all round attack?

Aguero, on song, is potentially going to score more than Suarez. City's attack is formidable. There's not the same quality behind Suarez IMO. I'd take Silva over Cout, Yaya over Gerrard, Navas (Nasri) over Henderson/Sterling, Fernihdino over Lucas.

It's a good question. I'd say he's essential if his price doesn't upset the balance of your team too much, but i'm not going to sacrifice two or three other strong players just to have him, especially with Sturridge, Negrado and possibly Adebayor who will all score plenty.

Marshall and Migs don't rotate so well. I'd either Sub Mannone in for Marshall or Szezcesny in for Migs.
I'm also not sure on Skrtel, for 5.5 you can have Kolarov or Distin.

      Not good. Sorry.

You have spent way too much in the wrong places IMO (DF and GK).

Downgrade Migs - Liverpools defensive record is patchy - Especially while Agger/Enrique are out.

Marshall Mannone is a better combo.

Then yoy have 4 big defenders. I'd drop both Dawson/Skrtel to someone like Azpil + a playing 3.9

then consider upgrading Wellbeck. the Wellbeck Ade attack is horridly inconsistent.
