Spot the Differential – Gameweek 22

A fit-again front-man is this week’s headline act as our regular Saturday morning article gets shifted to Friday evening. Also under analysis are a couple of wingers across the price ranges as we assess some overlooked alternatives for your perusal once again:

Andy Carroll

Finally free of the heel injury that has kept him in the West Ham treatment room for the first few months of the season, the big centre-forward made an immediate impression off the bench at Cardiff last week. Carroll was handed just 14 minutes as a late sub but still found the time to tee up Mark Noble for the visitors’ second and take the pressure off under-fire Sam Allardyce.

A look back at the last few months of 2012/13 highlights Carroll’s capabilities. After a stuttering start, he ended the season in fine form, producing six goals and four assists in his final 14 appearances for the Hammers. With Big Sam’s side tailored to the target man’s talents up front, regular service from out wide can be expected as Carroll’s aerial abilities look set to wreak havoc amongst top-flight backlines once again.

It’s not yet certain he’ll start against former club Newcastle tomorrow but his cameo against the Bluebirds may well persuade his manager to take a punt. With an eye-catching run of four home fixtures in six (SWA, avl, NOR, SOU, eve, HUL) from Gameweek 24 onwards, canny Fantasy managers may be looking to draft in Carroll (7.2 in Fantasy Premier League, 8.1 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team) before the potential bandwagon begins.

Jesus Navas

An injury to Samir Nasri in last week’s win at Newcastle looks set to boost the Spaniard’s chances of regular starts on the City right flank. With Nasri expected to be sidelined for up to eight weeks after being stretchered off at St James’ Park, Navas offers an intriguing route into Manuel Pellegrini’s free-scoring side ahead of four home fixtures in the next six Gameweeks.

At the Etihad, in particular, the summer signing from Sevilla has shone. Across his last seven home appearances, Navas has produced two goals, six assists and seven bonus points – delving further into his data, the winger has produced 43 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in five starts in front of his own fans.

With Cardiff, Chelsea, Sunderland and Stoke all paying visit between now and Gameweek 27, Navas – who also has a trip to Norwich on his agenda – may prove a canny investment for those looking for an alternative to the template-friendly Yaya Toure. At 8.3 in FPL, 7.6 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team he’s cheaper than the Ivorian (10.1) and David Silva (9.3) and, as his home displays have demonstrated, is more than capable of delivering for Pellegrini’s side.

Adam Johnson

The Sunderland wide-man was far from Fantasy radars heading into last week’s trip to Fulham. It’s understandable, though – Johnson had started just one of the previous eight league matches under Gus Poyet and had looked no more than a peripheral figure in the Black Cats’ battle for survival.

Handed a start on the right of a 4-3-3 at Craven Cottage, Johnson served up a 22-point FPL haul, courtesy of three goals, an assist and maximum bonus points to announce himself as a definite name to consider. With Poyet altering his tactical approach in order to get the most out of Johnson’s talents, the former Man City winger seems poised to play a significant role over the remainder of the season.

Coming in at 6.4 in FPL (7.4 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team), Johnson’s mid-price appeal may well persuade some to take a punt over site-favourite Ki Sung-Yeung (4.8). With three home games (SOU, STO, HUL) and a trip to neighbours Newcastle in the next four, the schedule certainly looks kind for Johnson and Poyet as the in-form Wearsiders look to scramble their way out the drop zone.

    Tonight's WC Version 1.0
This could be a long night.

    Mannone | Adrian
    Coleman | Azpi | Kolarov | Kosc | Bardsley
    Haz | Silva | Lallana | Eriksen | Gnab
    Suarez | Aguero | Sturridge

    0.2 ITB

Intention: 433 mostly, flexible enough to go 343 or 523 when needed.

If Azpi or Kolarov is dropped I have a decent mid to be first sub.
Gnab is there as a punt since he'll get decent game time, starts and sub appearances.

I'd like better Arsenal attacking cover for this weekend. But other than Wilshere, I don't see much of interest to replace a Liv or Man City player. So thinking I might as well wait for Ramsey and then one of my mid priced mids will make way for him.

    Thoughts appreciated.

        Spread vs weak looking bench.
Options vs being forced to play players.

actually your team plays better with 343..and u are still going to leave a 5m plus+4.5m def on bench..chester and ward are not weak players imo as they are good at home.

another bad point i can think of is that it is v hard to get in a high price player in the future..lets sae if u want to do eriksen->ozil you may have to make 3 transfers to do it.

my team looks lyk this after next week

          mcgregor davis
          baines kos chester ward brown
          silva hazard ozil lallana pennant
          suarez aguero sturridge

basically i leave nth much on the bench. the good thing about spread is when 1 player injuried you may not have to sell or forced to play a weak player. so it is your call.

I'm playing the big teams keep more CS in the second half of the season card, but trying to do it in the cheapest way, but with a plan B when those players are dropped.

I've grown bored of the rotating cheapies and fancy trying something new.

            It's only a game after all 🙂

Thanks for taking time to reply, much appreciated.

Baines is nagging away at me though. Whether to downgrade Eriksen to get Baines...

I'm doing the same with both Azpi & Kolarov

Torn between Ozil (and Ki on bench to be upgraded when I can do Ozil> Ram) or going to 7.5's now

I fancy Sturridge as my second Liv player, not really any other options since I'm not keen on Gerrard.

But I would like Giroud too. It's a dilemma for sure.

I don't care about second keepers - maverick me.

I will be playing a CPL defender this week. Though Stoke have been scoring goals as of recent. If I was brave I may punt on Williamson. Carroll is back but I think Newcastle can easily win that game.

I wouldn't consider Gnarby as gunner coverage. But as I said your 5th mid may get one start in the next 10 gw so not a big deal.

    Here's the team

    Mannone
    Chester, Terry, Coleman, Koscielny
    Eriksen, Cabaye, Yaya
    Aguero, Remy, Suarez

Subs - Marshall, Lallana, Bannan, B.Turner

Should I be playing Lallana? If so, who to swap him for?

    Cheers 😀

    Another sport joke...

A man and a friend are playing golf one day at their local golf course. One of the guys is about to chip onto the green when he sees a long funeral procession on the road next to the course. He stops in mid-swing, takes off his golf cap, closes his eyes, and bows down in prayer.

His friend says: Wow, that is the most thoughtful and touching thing I have ever seen. You truly are a kind man.

The man then replies: Yeah, well we were married 35 years.

Can Mertesacker, Sterling and Negredo rise tonight?

Hope I can grind out an extra 0.1m out of them before selling them on WC

I think I'd play Terry over Ward.

I think Ward has a better clean sheet chance then Terry. But 6.6 for a defender you have to play him. He has greater potential for goals and bps.

My current transfer decision depends on when i intend to play my WC....whats the views around here about pros/cons about playing in either gw23 / 24

    some factors i am considering:
    - 10 day vs. 3 day gap so better chances of price movements for gw23
    - know most team line ups beforehand (which is also a pro for playing gw24 as it would allow for punts in gw23
    - some of the top teams are playing against each other in gw23 i.e. eve/liv , ars/sot, tot/city so easier to plan strategy from gw24 onwards
    - any fixture swings?

    current team is:
    mannone (myhill*)
    mert distin* olson (chester burner*)
    hazard ozil coutinho* nasri (januzaj)
    suarez giroud lukaku*

    * = player i want to remove
this week's transfer: probably nasri >> silva

I would get Cout out for Silva this week. Double up on Man City against Cardiff. I will be wildcarding Gw23 for no other reason then I think I will get my highest gw total by doing so then. Everything you listed above could be a possible reason for a good wildcard week. Just got to go with the gut

Need some transfer help lads! 1 FT, £1.3m in bank. Obviously Lukaku > Aguero is the plan in next week or two but
    1. When?
    2. Which midfielder goes for who, to create the extra £2.5m?

    Mannone
    Koscielny Ward Coleman
    Ozil Cabaye Eriksen Hazard
    Suarez Rodriguez Lukaku

    Bench - Chester, Mutch, Turner

Good morning everyone. Not usually awake and on the site at this time but my (darling!) snoring husband is keeping me awake...again! Tried the gag, smelling salts and pillow but no joy, so to prevent manslaughter charge I thought I would distract myself! Some good posts and helpful suggestions- great anger management strategy thanks.
Doing well in my ml- currently top, just trying to work out whether to play my wc this week or wait
Ps- any cures for snoring welcome, probably better if they're legal as I don't thinking can play FPL in prison!

I tried a saline rinse and it seems to work for me. Or they sell a ball harness that forces you to sleep on your sides instead of on your back (I snore on my back). Best of luck! Wish my gf would wakeup early and browse fpl instead of waking me up when I snore
