Spot the Differential – Gameweek 22

A fit-again front-man is this week’s headline act as our regular Saturday morning article gets shifted to Friday evening. Also under analysis are a couple of wingers across the price ranges as we assess some overlooked alternatives for your perusal once again:

Andy Carroll

Finally free of the heel injury that has kept him in the West Ham treatment room for the first few months of the season, the big centre-forward made an immediate impression off the bench at Cardiff last week. Carroll was handed just 14 minutes as a late sub but still found the time to tee up Mark Noble for the visitors’ second and take the pressure off under-fire Sam Allardyce.

A look back at the last few months of 2012/13 highlights Carroll’s capabilities. After a stuttering start, he ended the season in fine form, producing six goals and four assists in his final 14 appearances for the Hammers. With Big Sam’s side tailored to the target man’s talents up front, regular service from out wide can be expected as Carroll’s aerial abilities look set to wreak havoc amongst top-flight backlines once again.

It’s not yet certain he’ll start against former club Newcastle tomorrow but his cameo against the Bluebirds may well persuade his manager to take a punt. With an eye-catching run of four home fixtures in six (SWA, avl, NOR, SOU, eve, HUL) from Gameweek 24 onwards, canny Fantasy managers may be looking to draft in Carroll (7.2 in Fantasy Premier League, 8.1 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team) before the potential bandwagon begins.

Jesus Navas

An injury to Samir Nasri in last week’s win at Newcastle looks set to boost the Spaniard’s chances of regular starts on the City right flank. With Nasri expected to be sidelined for up to eight weeks after being stretchered off at St James’ Park, Navas offers an intriguing route into Manuel Pellegrini’s free-scoring side ahead of four home fixtures in the next six Gameweeks.

At the Etihad, in particular, the summer signing from Sevilla has shone. Across his last seven home appearances, Navas has produced two goals, six assists and seven bonus points – delving further into his data, the winger has produced 43 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in five starts in front of his own fans.

With Cardiff, Chelsea, Sunderland and Stoke all paying visit between now and Gameweek 27, Navas – who also has a trip to Norwich on his agenda – may prove a canny investment for those looking for an alternative to the template-friendly Yaya Toure. At 8.3 in FPL, 7.6 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team he’s cheaper than the Ivorian (10.1) and David Silva (9.3) and, as his home displays have demonstrated, is more than capable of delivering for Pellegrini’s side.

Adam Johnson

The Sunderland wide-man was far from Fantasy radars heading into last week’s trip to Fulham. It’s understandable, though – Johnson had started just one of the previous eight league matches under Gus Poyet and had looked no more than a peripheral figure in the Black Cats’ battle for survival.

Handed a start on the right of a 4-3-3 at Craven Cottage, Johnson served up a 22-point FPL haul, courtesy of three goals, an assist and maximum bonus points to announce himself as a definite name to consider. With Poyet altering his tactical approach in order to get the most out of Johnson’s talents, the former Man City winger seems poised to play a significant role over the remainder of the season.

Coming in at 6.4 in FPL (7.4 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team), Johnson’s mid-price appeal may well persuade some to take a punt over site-favourite Ki Sung-Yeung (4.8). With three home games (SOU, STO, HUL) and a trip to neighbours Newcastle in the next four, the schedule certainly looks kind for Johnson and Poyet as the in-form Wearsiders look to scramble their way out the drop zone.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    WAC tinkering finally settled.

    Mannone (Krul)
    Cole, Sagna, Kolorov (Gabbidon, Chester)
    Hazard, Silva, Ozil, Sterling (Januzaj)
    Suarez, Aguerro, Giroud

    0.5 ITB

All 10 outfield players from the top 4 teams playing at Home this week. Could be a strength or maybe too narrow.

    Any thoughts or comments?

Was hoping to hold WC for gw 24 .Now figuring better to activate for 23 .
Will have FA Cup , Capital 1 and Champions League games in between and 10 days to fiddle.

High chance of some injuries and form increases over this period.

Anybody else think this may be the way to ?

Big Sam on Adrian: "If I had paid £10million for him everybody would be talking about him.

"But because I've done the job and got him for nowt everyone asks who he is.

      Very naive viewpoints people.

He bought Adrian to replace Jassi eventually, and has now started to ease him in.

After last week's heroics at Cardiff I guarantee he has the position to lose.

It really depends on your team. And where you are in your mini league. If I was to take a one week punt. I would take Giroud at home to Cardiff. It is a differential this week with many taking Sturridge in their WC team and with Aguero back Negredo could see less game time/ will not be the only target. But go with your gut, It usually give the best adivce

I feel like unless you want to run 4-3-3, that your defense is too pricey. That said, your team value is clearly much better than mine.

Is you are only gonna play 3 at the back, it will mean you are benching a very pricey defender no matter what. That with rotation risk might make you consider selling one of Azpi or Kolarov for a cheaper option.

How about this fellas, this could be the make or break for me. Choose an option, thanks very much:

    1. Boruc + non-playing keeper + Mertesacker

    or

    2. Boruc + Mannone + Koscielny

Basically would you downgrade Mert to Kos in order to have a 2nd keeper?

Kosc is better value but Mert will outscore him. I don't trust Boruc but I don't think having a non playing keeper behind him that big a deal.

I would probably mix it up Boruc, Non playing keeper, and Kosc. This would open up some nice funds for upgrade elsewhere.

After that week I switched to Szezcney and a non playing keeper and have never looked back. Though I see the advantage of it. I did the starter and back up keepers last year. Worked fine. Point is I believe one 100% starting keeper and one nobody is the way to go. Don't much care for rotation.

I will be downgrading Ozil (depending on form and other in my mini league) to Ramsey when fit. SAS forward line seems to be popular. imo I think Suarez is enough Liverpool coverage though I see the benefit especially if Sturridge can start finding the net like early on.

Yeah definitely. Well i think i'm in favour of the SAS route because i do firmly believe sturridge will hit the ground running and do really well, it's safer to have both imo, then again i do think Suarez is enough coverage, all depends on Mr Ozil, he's got todo well this gameweek.

Agreed. I may look into this SAS front line with my wc next week. If Sturridge price stay secure and Ramsey come back next week I could do. Welbeck (two punt), Ozil and Turner to Sturridge, Ramsey, Fonte.

Question for experinced FPLers. This is my second year playing FPL. Do you change your tactics in the second half of the season? I keep hearing how the big name teams tighten defensively in the run in.
Should I look to go bigger in defence? I have had Coleman since day 1 and curently have Mert and Fonte beside him.
I'm 33k in the world but 20 points behind in my mini League. I've been yoyoing between 50k and 150k most of the season. Played my WC last week got 83 points and stepped up a bit.
Should I gamble on the captaincy?
Is it wrong to refer to people above you as Evil Geniuses/ Nemesis/ Arch Enemy? 🙂 I picture him sitting in an underground lair, stroking a white cat, while minions do footie research for him....

I think the guy above me in my ML is a very lucky idiot.

It's all luck. I've always made the right moves!

I have been playing for 5 years now. Went from 1 million rank to top 50k. by changing strategy every second week haha. Just got to go with your gut and hope it turns out.

People above me in my mini leagues are all trolls. I picture them creating their team on the first day never checking their teams until the final day, seeing that they are ahead of me and just laughing.

Dont understand why everybdy is suggesting Giru over Sturridge .. Sturridge has scored more goals than Giru and he was injured for 8 weeks .
    Giru PPG = 5.5 , Sturridge PPG = 6.6

More about Arsenal coverage, majority feel Suarez is enough as Pool coverage.
      Couldnt blame them.

haha yeah i tink its more about coverage. though 1 thing i dun get it is if the best (it seems to me at least) way to get points is to double up suarez and sturridge..then why do we bother to think about coverage?

20 minute cameo could bring forth a hat-trick. Pretty sure he'll play, just not start

Sergio is coming back from a long injury, he played 20 minutes against Blackburn - we'll have to decide if he starts. - Pelegrini

        Doesnt look too good.

Ageuro when fit is a nailed on player for City.

So when the manager says he has to decide about him starting, it means he is not yet fully fit.
And I wont risk your main player agst Cardiff at home with Barca in 3 weeks time.

I'd play Chester out of those 2 but personally on my team Chester is my second sub haha. Sunderland have been playing real well at home hard to see them not putting one in.
