The Weekend Team News

Everton’s defensive problems continue as Seamus Coleman and Sylvain Distin remain on the sidelines for the visit of Villa. Arsene Wenger rules Jack Wilshere out Sunday’s clash with Palace. Papiss Cisse and Yoan Gouffran are both still doubts for Newcastle, whilst Loic Remy loses his red card appeal. Rickie Lambert looks set to return for Southampton, though Gabby Agbonlahor is still a concern for Villa:

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Jack Wilshere will miss the visit of Crystal Palace this weekend with an ongoing ankle injury, though hopes the England international will be available against Liverpool the week after. Wenger also conceded Aaron Ramsey will remain sidelined for four-to-six weeks after a thigh injury setback. Mathieu Flamini is suspended after his red card against Southampton, though Tomas Rosicky will return to the squad following surgery on his nose.

Everton’s defensive issues don’t look like abating this week. Roberto Martinez confirmed tomorrow’s game with Villa will come too soon for both Sylvain Distin and Seamus Coleman, whilst Antolin Alcaraz looks set to be out “for a while” with muscle fatigue. Though Martinez does expect the pair to be available for the game against Tottenham next weekend. Elsewhere, the Everton boss has confirmed that new recruit Lacina Traore is still 10-14 days away from recovering from a hamstring problem.

Paul Lambert has confirmed that Gabby Agbonlahor remains “touch and go” for the trip to Goodison Park, after a foot injury ruled him out of the Midlands derby in midweek. The forward will be assessed again but his manager has admitted the Toffees showdown may well be too soon.

Rickie Lambert has returned to full training ahead of Southampton’s trip to Fulham. Additionally, Mauricio Pochettino could be set to hand fit-again Victor Wanyama his first start since Gameweek 14 after he returned to the Saints squad in midweek.

Cardiff’s Mark Hudson looks likely to miss out with the hamstring problem that forced him off against United in midweek. Earlier this morning, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also confirmed Jordan Mutch and Kevin Theophile-Catherine are both in contention to return for tomorrow’s home game against Norwich.

Alan Pardew will assess the fitness of attackers Yoan Gouffran and Papiss Cisse ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby. The pair missed the stalemate with Norwich in midweek through injury and remain doubtful for the weekend. New signing Luuk de Jong is available after completing his move this week, however the forward is unlikely to be handed a start against Sunderland.

Meanwhile, the Football Association have dismissed Newcastle’s appeal against the red card handed to Loic Remy in midweek. The striker will now serve a three-match suspension with immediate effect. There was good news for Norwich, though, with the FA rescinding Bradley Johnson’s red card for his part in the Remy clash last Tuesday evening.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter stream as breaking news unfolds.

    Dzeko or Adebayor?

Dzeko is on form but has Chelsea and will be fighting for his place against Negredo and Jove.
Adebayor is certain of his place but Tottenham is not doing so well.

He is actually a good player who can play all attacking positions, has both skills and physics. Nobody can doubt that, even if he may have been frustrating at Chelsea sometimes.

I may like the Vucinic loan bid more, though. They could really use a player like him now that Ramsey, Wilshere and Walcott are all injured. Could give rest to Giroud once a while too. Meanwhile, a genuine CM able to play lower down the midfield would be useful right now. And right now Arsenal should think the moment, not the distant future.

Repost as lost in the deep, dank depths of the bottom of last page:

Have managed to hold my knee so far, but would really appreciate some fresh eyes.

If Aguero is confirmed out, my team looks something like:

Kolorov (CHE) Sagna (CRY) Bardsley (new) [Ward Coleman]

Januzaj (sto) Silva (CHE) Mirallas (AVL) Lallana (ful) Haz (mci)

    Suarez (wba) Bony (whu) [Aguero]

Have enough in the bank for Aguero -> RVP, but this would be for a hit. Would then bench Hazard.

Alternative would be Coleman - > Baines and bench bardsley.

    Thoughts?

Yeah, of course. All depends on the need to gamble.

It reads similar to the Bony one though - all logic points to it being a good pick, but you can't beat the consistency of the top strikers.

How to deal with a squad when you have 7 outfield players injured ?
1.transfer out dead players and take 12 or more pts hit
2.sort out strikers and take -4 pt hit ,then sort out defense later

    Open Controls
      • 10 Years
      10 years, 2 months ago

Look at every transfer on the basis of "Will he get four points more than him?"

If people are injured, their replacement will at least get 2 points more than 0 (in theory!), but they would still need to return points.

If you've got seven though, it will take a long time to get rid of all them, so hits may make long term gain.

Or do you need the instructions for closing your account? 😉 That's painful to read!

Away form and home form - are they actually indicators? Like why does Aston Villa plays better in away games? Why not in home games? Is there any logic? Why does Man City always scores at least 4 home matches? Why can't they keep the consistency in away matches? Why does Lallana performs only in home matches? Its the same game after all....

Villa are good on the break, so it works better away from home when they are being pushed back more

I.e. Weimann and Agbonlahor are very pacy, so if they are home and trying to build the play, this threat is wasted

Who knows what affects a player's form home and away but it's definitely a real phenomenon.

Villa - play counter-attacking football - this works best away.

City - they score plenty away from home - but their style at home means they dominate even more.

Lallana - some players like their home comfort - changing room, habits, pitch, fans - and of course they have more possession, more opportunities etc.

Aston Villa play better away from home because they sit back, soak up pressure and the attack on the counter. At home they have pressure on themselves from the fans etc to push on and go forward, which doesn't suit their style or personnel.

I understand what you all are saying... So, basically it comes down to the environment. They let the environment control the game... More possession at home, less away - this convention is because the teams try to play differently in two different scenarios - so why would that happen? Is it completely psychological?

I was thinking Rooney for free.

My ML has the funds to do Kun->Rvp, and that worries me.

I need to sell Coleman/Terry/JT to fund a Rvp move and I'm not keen.

Right lets start again. Already taken Lukaku out for Sturridge.

    A) Keep Aguero and Shift Coleman -4pts

    B) Shift Cabaye for another mid around 7 mil -4pts

    C) Shift both Cabaye and Coleman -8pts

Wait for Aguero presser, but getting rid of Cabaye is priority - if swapping Aguero for a cheaper striker affords you a premium replacement for Cabaye then all the better
      What about Aguero+Cabaye > Negredo+Mata or Silva?

I thought so the first games they played together, so I stuck with Sturridge for some GWs. Huge mistake. Suarez is twice the player Sturridge is really, risky business captaining Sturr over him.
