The Digest – Gameweek 28

Our last glance at the Gameweek gone by assesses the return to form of Villa’s talisman, the Fantasy potential on offer at the Britannia and the weekly armband frustration brought on by a certain Merseyside pairing:

The Player

Clearly, there is something about the turn of a New Year that seems to bring out the best in Christian Benteke. Last season, the big Belgian managed just five goals in his first few months at Aston Villa before embarking on a run of 14 goals in his final 18 appearances from January onwards and, as the current campaign picks up pace, he’s at it again.

With four goals in the first four Gameweeks, Benteke was quick to recapture the form of late 2012/13 before a hip injury forced him off against Norwich in mid-September. Returning to the first-team one month later, the Villa centre-forward looked devoid of confidence and, deserted by his predatory instincts in the box, was subject to significant sales after a run of 11 league appearances without another goal.

A weekend rematch with the Canaries had an altogether different outcome as Benteke battered Chris Hughton’s backline into submission with a display of power and pace that the Norwich boss admitted was simply too much for his side to cope with. After blanking in the New Year’s Day clash with Sunderland, Benteke has now served up five goals and two assists in eight league games and looks back to his barnstorming best, serving up the type of performance that made him a “must-have” for many when the season kicked off.

Priced at a reasonable 8.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Benteke could offer owners of the likes of Olivier Giroud and Emmanuel Adebayor a solution as the fixtures turn nasty for Arsenal and Spurs over the short-term. Granted, a blank Gameweek 29 and home clash with Chelsea will curtail our immediate interest but, following that, Lambert’s side still have to face Stoke, Fulham, Palace, Swansea and Hull in their remaining eight Gameweeks and also have a double to be factored in. If his current form continues, a bandwagon could soon be back up and running as Benteke looks to deliver over the run-in once again and fire the Midlands outfit to safety.

The Team

With a single defeat in the last five and some very favourable fixtures to follow, Stoke are starting to turn heads as Fantasy managers assess their options over the next few Gameweeks. A 1-0 win over Arsenal helped the Potters claim yet another big scalp at the Britannia last weekend – having defeated Chelsea and United and drawn with City and Everton in front of their own fans, Mark Hughes has ensured his new side remain formidable at home, with just two losses on their own patch thus far.

A trip to Norwich this weekend, at a time when 10 teams are without a fixture, could prove profitable but it’s the fixtures beyond that Carrow Road encounter which make Hughes’ side legitimate mid-price options. West Ham, Villa and Hull follow directly after, whilst Newcastle, Cardiff, Fulham and West Brom have all still to square up to the Staffordshire outfit – it’s little wonder our season ticker rates their run as the most favourable from this point onwards.

The FA’s decision to charge Charlie Adam with violent conduct yesterday may alter some managers’ plans – Stoke will appeal, but a potential three-match ban would be a real blow for Hughes, given the Scot had scored three times in the seven Gameweeks prior to the Gunners showdown. Jon Walters’ converted spot-kick last weekend means he has now scored or assisted against Liverpool, United and Arsenal in the last eight and may be worth a punt – if Adam is out, he’ll be next on penalties.

At the back, a first clean sheet in 12 attempts also bodes well for Hughes’ side ahead of their upcoming schedule. Whilst Erik Pieters, at 4.8, is the cheapest of the Potters regular back-four, Ryan Shawcross (5.4) looks the best bet – he has now earned eight bonus points over the club’s last three clean sheets and, with Robert Huth still battling back from a knee injury, the Stoke skipper holds the greatest appeal as Hughes looks to take advantage of the remaining matches and steer his side to mid-table safety in his first season at the helm.

The Talking Point

After playing second fiddle to Daniel Sturridge for the previous few Gameweeks, Luis Suarez returned to form with a bang last Saturday as Liverpool dismantled Southampton at St Mary’s. The Uruguayan’s 15-point haul, combined with his team-mate’s couple of points against the Saints, proved hugely significant in many a mini-league and again highlighted just how tricky the duo are making the armband decision.

Over the last few weeks, even the tactic of having both in our three-man frontlines has not been enough. Only twice in their last seven starts since Sturridge’s return have the pair posted similar weekly scores – as we mentioned in yesterday’s This Much We Know, if you got the Suarez/Sturridge captaincy call correct in the last five Gameweeks, you’d have racked up 122 points. If you were wrong each time, you’d have been left with 36 points.

Fine lines, yet the logic behind selecting either is valid. Both players have blanked just four times this season (Suarez has scored/assisted in 19 of 23 appearances and Sturridge in 16 of 20) though it’s perhaps telling that only twice this season have they produced 10+ hauls in the same match.

With Sergio Aguero back in action for City and poised for three doubles from Gameweek 31 onwards, many Fantasy managers will be looking to those three to grab the goals, though the fear that the Argentine’s game time could be rationed as his manager looks to ensure he remains injury-free for the run-in may affect our armband decisions.

Certainly, City’s busy schedule is likely to persuade many to take a captaincy punt on Aguero or Yaya Toure over the Liverpool pair in the Gameweeks where Manuel Pellegrini’s side have an extra fixture. Even Sunderland’s Adam Johnson could be a legitimate contender, given that the Black Cats also have 12 fixtures to play over the final nine Gameweeks.

Beyond those options, could we look to those sides who have one steady source of points? Eden Hazard, for example, has already served up five sets of double figures at home and his final three fixtures at the Bridge see Stoke, Sunderland and Norwich pay visit. The above-mentioned Benteke also has a trio of favourable home fixtures (FUL, SOU, HUL) to help maintain his upturn in form.

There’s also a certain Dutchman to consider. For all United’s toils, Robin van Persie has still managed to score in eight of his last 10 league matches – granted, his double Gameweek 31 (whm, MCI) is not as enticing as Liverpool’s (car, SUN) but the champions’ final four home fixtures (AVL, HUL, NOR, SUN) suggest he could rival the Merseyside duo over the run-in and potentially make our captaincy call a little less fraught with frustration.

Is it fair to say that the team gymnastics many are going through centred around getting in Aguero for the DGW could end up with exactly the same result as those centred on getting him in post-injury on the January wildcard? Makes me loathe to focus all transfers on that one goal.

Yes. Previous time I was so keen on waiting. But the crowd here went crazy he rose 0.5 or something. I joined the party and we all know what happened later. The problem is that they have 3 doubles till the end and he could be 13m till then

mmm..Since his return from injury nine games ago Gerrard has amassed 55pts..Yaya only 48 in his last nine..Gerrard should be the top of our mid lists for the DGW...or very close to.

DEFENDER FOR GW 29 FOR A HIT

Hey guys ! I'm looking for a defender for GW29 for a hit. So I share my thoughts with you !

I looked at the options for GW29, focusing on CS, attacking threat and fixtures.

    1) Who could score at least 5 points in GW29 ?

CLEAN SHEETS : Well, a clean sheet would be enough. But do we really want to rely on that ?

    - WEST BROM : 7 games without clean sheets so I don't think they will keep a CS against the likes of Rooney, RVP or Mata. (I know ManU are shit, but still...)
    - MAN UNITED : In their last 10 games in PL, it's 50-50 in terms of CS. But we all know their defense is weak (0-2 against Olympiakos...) and West Brom have scored in the last seven games, including LIV and CHE.

    - CARDIFF : In the last 10 games, they conceded 2 goals on average. Fulham have recently scored against Liverpool, ManU and Chelsea...
    - FULHAM : 13 league games without a CS. Attacking is improving, but not defending. Cardiff are currently on 4 games without a single goal in BPL though !

    - CRYSTAL : the new system without Gabbidon doesn't seem to suit them. In their last 10 games, the only 3 CS they managed were with him. Southampton have only blanked against Chelsea and Liverpool in their last 15 games.
    - SOUTHAMPTON : Real chances of a CS against Crystal, although they conceded 6 goals in their last 2 BPL games (against Liverpool and West Ham).

    - NORWICH : Great home form. But the team is weakened by injuries and they conceded 4 at Villa Park.
    - STOKE : The CS against Arsenal was the first in 12 BPL games. They improved their attacking threat, maybe they are now focusing on the defensive duties as well. They will play against a side without two of their 3 top scorers (if Fer and Snodgrass don't play.)

    - CHELSEA : Solid defense. But you probably already have a Chelsea defender, right ?
    - TOTTENHAM : Against a top side like Chelsea, fighting for the title... I just can't see Chelsea blank in this game. But stats show that Tottenham can keep a CS with 5 in 10 games.

So, CHELSEA, SOUTHAMPTON, STOKE and NORWICH seem to be the more likely to keep a CS. But it could so easily not be the case, you should probably rely on :

    ATTACKING THREAT :

Goals : Terry, Iva, Fonte (3), Lovren, Caulker, McAuley (2)
    Assists : Evra (5), Walker (4), Riether (3), Cahill, A.Cole, Shaw, Pieters, Ridgewell (2)
Bonus : Terry (22), Evra (18), Fonte (16), Walker, Vertonghen (15), Cole, Caulker (13), Iva, Cahill (12), Lovren, Shawcross (11)

    2) Does he have best fixtures that the one you're transferring out ?

Yeah, could it would be silly to transfer out a player who will outscore your new defender in the following weeks, no ?

    - MAN U : Being the only team with a GW29 and a DGW31, they seem a good pick.

    - CHELSEA : they can keep a CS against anyone really so go for it if you don't already have one.

    - STOKE, NORWICH : If you're not transferring out a player with DGW31, they seem to be the ones with the best coming fixtures.

    - SOUTHAMPTON : Mixed fixtures with NOR, tot, NEW, mci coming...

Based on this analysis, my top 5 defenders for GW29 would be :

    1) Terry, Iva, Azpi or Cahill : Why not double up ?
    2) Evra : for his DGW31 and attacking threat.
    3) Olsson (if fit), Bassong : cheap options with good fixtures.
    4) Fonte, Lovren : good attacking threat and GW29 but mixed fixtures
    5) Stoke defense : Shawcross and Cameron are too expensive to take a risk. Wilson at 4.3 is an option with good fixtures. If you believe their CS against Arsenal is a sign of good defending coming...

Great post. Seeing a lot of people mention Chambers but only 3 CS when he has started from 16 matches, he might be a good player and dirt cheap but that's not amazing is it? granted he was once injured and subbed off on 57 mins so lets say he has 4 CS from 16. He is playing well but it's not really reflecting points wise imo, good for cover against a rival with Boruc, Fonte et al though I guess. Also looking at their remaining fixtures they face only 3 sides (Newc, Man Utd, Swansea) who don't really have anything to play for, add that to Clyne getting a run out here and there and he doesn't seem as appealing as I once thought. Then again a plus side is they were defensively solid when Fonte, Lovren, Wanyama and Schneiderlin played together and they're all finally fit. I'm over thinking this for someone who is 3.9 aren't i?

Chambers is a good pick too if you really need a 3.9 priced defender. But I would rather chose a cheap option with better fixtures (Olsson if fit) or Fonte/Lovren with better attacking threat !

        Very good and useful post!

I'm taking a hit to do Kos -> Shawcross and field 11.. It's only really a -2 with Kos not playing this week, as well as Stoke's fixtures over the next 5 compared to Arsenal's and Shawcross being nailed on, a goal threat and good for BAPS I think it's a good trade off.

11 is impressive ! I would rather pick Lovren or Fonte though... Their fixtures aren't as good as Shawcross, but maybe they rotate well with your other defenders ? If so, their attacking threat could be worth the hit.

        6) Hold and field 10 (or less). Interesting how you've missed this option.

For -4 the player you get in should get over 4 points or look better than the options available next week:

From GW30, number of games left:
        12 - Man City, Sunderland
        11 - Everton
10 - Palace, Arsenal, Villa, Hull, Liverpool, Man Utd, New, Swansea, West Brom, West Ham
9 - Tottenham, Southampton, Stoke, Norwich, Fulham, Chelsea, Cardiff.

        With;
        Everton v Palace
        Everton v Newcastle
        Arsenal v Swansea
        City v Sunderland
        City v Villa
        Sunderland vs WBA
        - still to be arranged (cheers Beric).

That means Bardsley has CPL, nor+liv, WHM in the next four with two games in hand, while Everton have CAR, SWA, ful with two very tasty home games in hand.

The only option of these weeks playing players to rival these looks to be a Chelsea player (wise move but many of us are tripled already) or Evra, though two of his next four being LIV and MCI don't look great.

In conclusion then, unless you have a nonplaying player with less than 4.3 for a replacement or would like one of Suissguiness's players for the rest of the season (Chelsea or Evra), hold and do a transfer next week.

            Just adding my twopence! 🙂
I think it's worth doubling up if your alternative is Olsson. Look at the Suarez/Sturridge combo.
I don't understand why people are sometimes afraid of taking the most likely to succeed option.

Moving forward onto the DG in 31, I'm thinking of taking an 8 point hit to get to...

      ADRIAN Speroni
      KOLAROV SKRTEL COLEMAN Ivanovic Chester
      NOLAN GERRARD YAYA HAZARD Barkley
      SUAREZ(c) AGUERO JEALVIC

Would have 9 players playing a DG any suggestions or comments???

Looks pretty good. Not too sure about Skrtel, Pool has some pretty bad fixtures for defense after the DGW. You have 2 Chelsea who have the best run of fixtures GW32 on imo which is good.

The last time he got a start, he scored two (against Stoke). The next game he got a 9 minute cameo.

Scoring for Mourinho doesn't make a player any more likely to play.

But for a one week punt, with your eyes open, with the chance of being up against a really depleted Spurs defence, sure, go for it. Just know the risks.

The stats show that Romelu Lukaku hates me. Up to his injury in GW22 I had owned him 3 times.

      12 Gameweeks owning him = 2 goals, 40 points = 3.3 points per game
10 Gameweeks not owning him = 7 goals, 63 points = 6.3 points per game

Rom-Rom, why do you hate me so? 🙁

My "ordeal" with Benteke will be very similar. Had him thrice this season

        - once at the start, went swimmingly
        - straight after he returned from injury for 7 weeks, got about 12 points total
        - last 4 weeks before I ditched him this, 1 assist

        Grrrr

But Yaya has 2 more DGW after.

I'd love to bring in Gerrard but with a planned frontline of S A S & a midfield with Yaya & Hazard in it, it's not easy. Have to ship Lallana and downgrade Sterling to a 4.5. Doesn't seem worth it.

It's my logic for selecting Aguero over Yaya. The point I was trying to make was that I'd prefer Aguero because of explosive returns, a realistic armband option.

Yeah but is Aguero gonna stay healthy? I'm still chasing 1st in my ML cos of saving up for Aguero instead of spreading the cash around, get him, gets hurt. Ship but keep some $$ in the bank for when he comes back, comes back as a sub and scores + assist, alright get him, plays 45 mins and injured again.

Good thing is now I'm probably the only one in my ML who can afford SAS and the likes of Yaya & Hazard in a team.

If Adam and Stoke put in a rugged defence of the charge and go for the personal appearance, and put that in after 17.00 or later today would I be right in thinking the hearing would be next week and therefore Adam, whatever the eventual findings would be free to play this weekend?

I know Charlie is dirty but why are the FA picking on him but let Yaya off. FA are so corrupt.

      GW31 WC team:

      Adrian* ( Mannone)
      Coleman*, Chester*, Zab* (Ward, Azpi)
      Yaya*, AJ*, Hazard, Livermore* (Jedinak)
      SAS*

      Any comment?

Like the look of that, you're in good shape with that but I'd prefer Sterling over Livermore myself. Also not sure a city Def is worth it. Just my thought though

How are you fixed this week?

Yeah, I've learnt in the past that sometimes it bot the be all and end all. City have hardly been a reliable source of CSs so the selection to me would be relying on attacking retunrs

It's not clear cut but I'd be surprised if Zaba didn't get better returns than Cahill from here till the end of the season.

I'd agree on that. But Terry/Ivan would be a different proposition.I feel

        Interesting, I am going:

        Mannone/Adrian
        Coleman/Zabaleta/Ward/Bardsley/Chambers
        Hazzy/Yaya/Mirallas/Johnson/Noone
        SAS

        So very similar.

Only difference is you're going cheaper than Mirallas to bring in a Chelsea defender and I'm going with a Sunderland defender for the 3 DGWs instead of Chelsea. I think I prefer my route but it's marginal and our teams are going to be all but identical!

The only good thing about this GW is that nobody will bench the wrong player(s) 🙂

For GW30 and beyond, who would you prefer?

      A.) Sterling
      B.) Henderson
      C.) Johnson
      D.) Nolan
E.) Anyone else 7.5m or under.

D ) Think I'm going Nolan myself, he seems the more consistent. Sterling is a bit lopsided if you've already got Suarez/Sturrige at least

Too risky to drop Mirallas for Schurrle?
Won't have full team this week
      Boruc
      Ivan, Fonte
      Hazard, Sidwell, Lallana +Schurrle?
      Ade

Out-Sturridge, Suarez, Yaya, Coleman, Kolsc, Rosenoir, Lewis

      Thx

hopefully puncheon's fine marks the end of this affair and he takes his medicine, apologises to pulis if he needs to, and comes back with another point to prove. last time somethign went wrong for him, the penalty which caused all of this, he came back with winning goals in the next 2 matches
