The Digest – Gameweek 29

We look back on Gameweek 29 for the final time to focus on Cardiff’s talismanic skipper and Man United’s improving league form. The imminent double Gameweek 31 is also in our thoughts as Fantasy managers start to plan for squad restructuring in order to take advantage of the outstanding schedules:

THE PLAYER

Acquired in the summer from Tottenham by Cardiff City, Steven Caulker burst onto our Fantasy radars last weekend with an inspirational performance against fellow strugglers Fulham. Caulker’s haul of two goals and three bonus points capped a much-improved display from the Bluebirds, earning them a second win under new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Whilst the Welsh club have struggled to keep out their opponents, with just six clean sheets to date, Caulker’s weekend haul took his total to 101 points – this makes him one of only 11 defenders to pass the three-figure milestone this season. Indeed, he is the only defender from a bottom-10 side who has managed to breach the 90-point mark, thanks mainly to an eye for goal that has seen him find the net on four occasions, level with Martin Skrtel and only one behind top goal-scoring defender Seamus Coleman.

Immediate investment in the Cardiff defence seems unlikely, though, with a trip to Everton next weekend, followed by a single home fixture against top goal scorers Liverpool in Gameweek 31. The Bluebirds’ survival will be defined by the six games to follow this, however, with four of these fixtures against teams that are also battling to beat the drop. Stoke and Crystal Palace will pay visit to the Cardiff City Stadium, while trips to West Brom and Sunderland could also be tight encounters. Caulker, then, (priced at 5.2 in Fantasy Premier League) could offer the required combination of defensive grit and attacking potential to keep Solskjaer’s and our own Fantasy teams competitive to the final week of the season.

THE TEAM

Many column inches have been written about Premier League champions Manchester United this season  the majority of them hugely critical of David Moyes and a number of players considered Fantasy gold in previous seasons. There are subtle signs, though, that the tide may be turning for the Red Devils ahead of the upcoming double Gameweek and beyond.

Saturday’s 3-0 win at West Brom helped United to their third consecutive clean sheet as Moyes’ side starts to show a little more resilience at the back. Whilst Patrice Evra offers the reliability of starts and attacking potential, it is perhaps the budget-friendlier duo of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, with ownership of only 1.7% and 1.3% respectively, that could attract our transfer cash as we plan for the run-in – Moyes’ suggestion that he will utilise the pair more often for the remainder of the season bodes well for their game time.

Comfortable wins against Crystal Palace and West Brom and a goal in each match for Wayne Rooney demonstrated that the striker is emerging from the barren spell that saw him return only seven points in the eight Gameweeks preceding the Selhurst Park trip. Acquired by over 144,000 Fantasy managers for last weekend, Rooney was the most transferred-in player and returned a goal, assist and maximum bonus for his investors. Many will hold for the upcoming showdown with Liverpool, and the Gameweek 31 double with West Ham and Manchester City also looks likely to attract additional suitors.

Looking beyond the double, though, United have a very favourable run of home games to boost the prospects of Rooney, Robin van Persie and Juan Mata. Villa, Hull, Norwich and Sunderland all pay visit to Old Trafford, helping to offset tricky road trips to Everton and Southampton. The currently postponed encounter against Steve Bruce’s side, initially scheduled for Gameweek 34, has yet to be re-arranged and could, potentially, hand Moyes’ side another double. Whilst their bid to retain the title has fallen flat, Fantasy managers may have reason for optimism when eyeing up United’s assets as Moyes looks to finish the season on a high.

THE TALKING POINT

As preparation, planning and community comment for Gameweek 31 reaches fever pitch, our focus inevitably turns to maximising points potential from the 15 matches on offer that week. Fantasy managers are spoilt for choice, with five of the top seven sides facing a double, and it is likely that those who were particularly prudent with their trades in the Gameweek gone by are well placed to take advantage.

There are a number of factors at play here when assessing the remaining fixture schedules. Whilst the allure of the double understandably draws us in, due consideration should also be given to fixtures following Gameweek 31. Many have been considering moving on popular Chelsea assets such as Eden Hazard or John Terry in favour of teams with games in hand, but a quick glance at our season ticker reveals the Premier League leaders have arguably the best fixtures of all teams from Gameweek 32 onwards. Jose Mourinho’s little horses square up to Crystal Palace, Stoke, Swansea, Sunderland, Norwich and Cardiff over that period, with only a game against Liverpool looking problematic as they attempt to close in on the title.

As mentioned above, United have a strong schedule to follow on from double Gameweek 31, but with Liverpool and City in the next two Gameweeks, many are parting company with their main assets. Mata is the most transferred-out midfielder this week thus far, with in excess of 20,000 already moving the Spaniard on, whilst Rooney and van Persie rank second and third in the forward exodus behind Emanuel Adebayor. The Tottenham man’s departure from over 50,000 squads may also be premature, with their final six games of the season seeing them entertain Sunderland, Fulham and Aston Villa whilst travelling to West Brom, Stoke and West Ham.

Emphasis on teams with fixture backlogs also dominates our thinking when assessing transfer targets for Gameweek 31. The FA Cup exits suffered by Manchester City and Sunderland at the weekend, and the conclusion to City’s Champions League fate tomorrow, will help to clarify the scheduling of further double Gameweeks in the near future. Both sides play 12 times in the final nine Gameweeks, whilst Everton also have a spare match (at home to Palace) yet to be scheduled, in addition to their upcoming double.

Finding a balanced approach between the quantity of remaining games and the quality of fixtures facing top-performing teams is key, then. Whilst the immediate potential offered by the double is likely to reap reward, it’s equally vital to have one eye on the run-in to ensure our short-term trades aren’t to the detriment of mini-league success.

There are some understandable concerns over Aguero's fixtures and that he by no means is guaranteed to bring in the points. But looking at his history from just this season, he's impressive.
15 goals in 1191 minutes. That's a great return. He has scored as follows:
    NEW- 1 goal, 1 assist.
    car- 1 assist
    MUH - 2 goals
    EVE - 1 goal, 1 assist
    whm - 2 goals
    che - 1 goal
    NOR- 1 goal, 3 assists
    TOT - 2 goals
    wba - 1 goal
    sou - 1 goal
    ARS - 1 goal
    CAR - 1 goal, 1 assist
    tot - 1 goal

Conclusion, it looks like he can score against anyone, home or away.
Note, he blanked twice in full games and had a 28 min appearance too.

Don't waste your breath, tried making this argument the last few days and all you'll get is the "but but but Lukaku is due because he's tall" arguments.

Can go both ways though, it can be deceptive but it can also indicate that with limited time he still manages to consistently be one of the best scorers in the PL. If it was an Aguero vs Suarez situation it'd be different but Aguero against Lukaku (who scores a goal every 161 minutes compared to Aguero's every 79 minutes) or Remy etc it seems a no brainer really. His returns are good and consistent.

he is one of the best scorers in the premier league, imo the best. but points per minute is such a dodgy fpl measure, coming off on 75mins is a negative yet is made to look like a positive

It can be deceptive of course but use it as a marker for performance is what I do. I agree that he's the best in the league, well that's what I think too at least. It is of course a negative but this season has had 4 full matches, a good few finished around the 85th minute and a lot more or injury related. That's the big issue, injury. That would be all that would put me off him.

Applebonkers beat me to it but yes stats are incedibly deceptive. Aguero has the better mins per goal ratio (79mins vs. 89mins) however only averages 7mins per game against Suarez 8mins.

Therefore Suarez has the superior advantage of a goal a game ratio whereas Aguero averages a goal every 1.13 games.

And that's a perfectly fair comparison as well, Suarez has played more time in matches than Kun. However you must also consider what ones are injury related/precautions, he's had a few 20 minute games and a few 40 minute games when he was struggling with injury problems. So it depends on whether you expect a recurrence of the injury or not. The point is that while he does not play as much as Suarez he is still more prolific.

Pienaar picked up a knock at the weekend and might not play against Cardiff.

    http://www.evertonfc.com/news/archive/2014/03/11/boss-won-t-rush-jags-back

As a Mirallas Sufferer, I thought I'd see if there's any trend in Mirallas's returns with and without Pienaar. Rather small sample sizes involved but Mirallas appears to do better without Pienaar. They've played most of the season together but Mirallas has scored 3 of his 6 goals in the short time without Pienaar (2 of those scored after Pienaar has been subbed off) and 3 of his 4 assists are without Pienaar too.

It's hard to put exact PP90-type figures on it because lots of the interesting stuff happens when they've started games together but been subbed off at different times. But still, I'm convinced enough to hope that Martinez decides to give Pienaar a few games to recover.

Any Toffees out there care to venture a guess at why this might be?

i would imagine it has alot to do with the link up play down the left between baines and pienaar which is excellent.. alot of their play seems to go down the left hand side especially and means mirrallas sees less of the ball.. thats my guess

Could be a similar issue to when Pablo H plays alongside Michu, Michu's returns decline noticeably. I reckon it's having 2 very attacking capable players splits the amount of possession that one player gets. I'd wager Mirallas has a lot more possession when Pienaar is not around.

I still have Mirallas in a number of teams so hopefully a few games without pienaar and it will help him and Barkley, who is in a few of my other teams.

No idea, maybe they occupy each other's space on the pitch?

How essential is Sturridge for the DGW, still not got him and fear he may kill me if don´t bring him in. On the other hand the strike force of Aguer, Suarez and Sturridge is very expensive. Could I get away with, for instance, Gerrard and Suarez?

    Re-post for a new post

A question I see come up a lot is whether to keep Mata or not, so I thought I'd delve a little deeper:

    Mata - 9.6m - owned by 11.5%
Remaining Fixtures - LIV, whu/MCI, AVI, new, blank, eve, NOR, SUN, sot
    Since joining United - 6, 7, 7, 3, 3, 3 - P.P.G = 4.833333
Picked up 5 bonus points in 6 games

Nailed on in the Premier League, no threat of rotation. Playing mainly out of position and is more likely to 'assist the assist-er'. On 1/2 of corners (Rooney takes the other side) and very little FKs.
Has a DGW coming up but not great fixtures, looking at his P.P.G, 9-10 points could be expected as a guide, unlikely to explode.

So to answer the original question, need to look at alternatives to Mata. For the purpose of this post, going to assume Yaya and Hazard are in people's teams and going to look round a similar price range, the player(s) must have a DGW also and the data used in the last 6 games.

Gerrard/Silva are the likely candidates, so lets look at them:

    Gerrard - 9.1%- owned by 10.2%
Remaining fixtures - mun, car/SUN, TOT, whu, MCI, nor, CHE, cpl, NEW
    Last 6 games - 8, 1, 9, 11, 2, 8 - P.P.G. = 6.5
    Picked up 4 bonus points

Also nailed on in FPL, playing a deeper role was 'suppose' to be detrimental too Gerrard points potential but with Penalties in his locker and the ability to pick a pass from seemingly anywhere, has the one of the Prem's most potent strikeforce, have scored the most goals over any other team. Suarez will keep winning him penalties.

DGW fixtures - car, SUN - points per game projection for the double = 13 - Doesn't have a blank in gw34 and with all the 'big guns' to play at home, Liverpool could be in for a decent run-in.

    Silva - 9.1m - owned by 4.3%
Remaining Fixtures - hul, FUL/mun, ars, SOT, liv, WBM, cpl, eve, WHU
    Points in last 6 games - 4, 5, 5, 2, 3, 3 - P.P.G. = 3.666666
    Picked up 1 bonus point

A lot depends on whether City progress in the Champions League to determine whether Silva is nailed on or not in the Prem, has a tendency to come off after 65-70 minutes for Milner/Navas.
You could argue that Silva and Mata are similar FPL-wise, due to their ability to 'assist the assister'. DGW potential - FUL/mun - points projection for the double is 7 points, FUL is a tasty fixture whereas other other is slightly trickier.

Summary: If your FPL team has more pressing concerns then I would deal with these first, If you have nothing else pressing then my option would be to transfer Mata > Gerrard, Gerrard has superior fixtures for the double, in greater form, greater points potential over the double than Mata or Silva. If Man City exit the Champions League, I would then perhaps consider Gerrard > Silva for the run-in, quite frankly their fixtures are amazing but can look into that at a later date.

Just because Mata has a double, doesn't mean he is immune to a transfer, especially to someone with a potentially profitable double.

    Cheers

Absolutely, Rooney and Evra are the only Man Utd players you'd probably consider, Mata would already be gone for a lot of people if it weren't for the double. If it means you can get Aguero then a no-brainer really 😀

It's really been a true rotation of the two up to this point. I think after City gets booted out of CL tomorrow and focus on league, Pellegrini will play Kolarov more.

I think it's fairly safe to say Kolarov will most likely get the starts in their remaining bigger matches: United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton. And I think he'll play their last match of the season vs West Ham. Whichever other matches might depend on how their rescheduled matches fall.

I'm going to assume he'll start tomorrow. That could mean he might be at risk against Hull on the weekend. Even the next weekend he could be at risk against Fulham with United 3 days later and Arsenal 4 days after that.

I guess that's a bit of the risk with Kolarov. I think him starting 8 of their 12 remaining matches may be optimistic.

    Getting giddy for the DGW.

Team as it stands with 1FT this week still and 2.3mil.

    Boruc (davies)

    Azpil Ivan Collins Olsson (gabbi)

    Hazard Yaya Lana (ince Kasami)

    Suarez Aguero Studge.

What do people think to getting Distin in for Gabbi?

Then the following week can do Olsson> Kolarov OR Davies > Mannone.

    Cech Mannone
    Coleman, Cahill, Kosc, Evra, Shaw
