Preamble

The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 32

So the gamble on the Wayne Rooney armband went slightly awry. Typically, Luis Suarez rained on my parade and punished my punt with another hat-trick on his way to a 25-point haul. To compound matters, Yaya Toure topped the Uruguayan, applying ample salt to my wounds as my rank drifted into further obscurity.

While this week’s ScoutCast was aptly titled – filled with moans and awkward attempts at justifying mistakes – I’ve only got myself to blame: dare to turn your back on this season’s limited number of true heavy-hitters and there’s every chance you’ll come out licking wounds. Quite simply, the supporting cast of Fantasy talent have failed to keep pace.

I’ve used this article before to focus on the midfield landscape and it’s pretty clear that this has hardly been resolved in recent weeks: Toure and Eden Hazard still dominate, with Adam Lallana occasionally flirting with double figures and Steven Gerrard exploiting set-pieces to join him.

Up front, however, the situation has become similarly settled – perhaps more so. The Liverpool strikers are currently monopolising our thinking and it’s likely that if you don’t own both Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, you’ve been forced to consider it very seriously or risk falling further adrift.

Again, the options are failing to run them close. Rooney, for all his efforts, is playing in a side devoid of confidence and lacking the fluidity to feed him the opportunity to rival the Merseyside hitmen. Romelu Lukaku, for his gradual grind towards a respectable goal tally, has lacked the potential to explode. Beyond that, we’re left looking at a cast of differentials, destined to fail in their attempts to outscore the Liverpool pair – Jay Rodriguez, Wilfried Bony, Olivier Giroud, Christian Benteke. I certainly hope that one of those names can emerge and genuinely turn in an end of season run. I won’t be alone.

Anyone looking above them in their mini-league will be wondering how they make up ground if, each time they differentiate their team from those above, they seem to slip further behind. From my experience last weekend, switching the captaincy from Suarez isn’t the answer.

So, inevitably, this can, again, come across as bitterness from a struggling Fantasy manager but my views on how the season has progressed are not totally tainted by my own plight. I had similar opinions on template teams last season on my way to a far more respectable rank.

For my money, it’s difficult to deny that injuries and United’s decline have exacerbated matters – we’ve been robbed of Theo Walcott, Michu, Robin van Persie and Sergio Aguero. Meanwhile Mesut Ozil has failed to live up to his billing and Santi Cazorla has struggled alongside him. This group of players could have been expected to offer viable alternatives to the current crop of names that dominate the ranks and offer mid-table Fantasy managers options. Without them, the season has settled into an all-too-familiar pattern of scoring, disrupted occasionally by the odd breakout performance from an unexpected source.

Regardless of rank and my ability to exploit how this season has developed, I’d be left hoping for a shake-up next term. Clearly the likes of Toure, Hazard and Liverpool’s “SAS” will enjoy price hikes going into the next campaign. Despite that, they’ll be established as hugely popular picks from the off. However, there will likely be another group of Fantasy managers who take a few risks – who back Van Persie, Walcott and Michu again in hope they can find the fitness and form to re-establish themselves as big factors in these games we play.

I really hope that the next campaign offers some reward for looking beyond this season’s big scorers. That’s not sour grapes, that’s just me craving more options when it comes to my Saturday morning decision-making.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Really great pre-amble article. Without taking anything away from those doing *really* well this year! it does sum up this season's FPL game.

I'd like to coin a phrase for the likes of Suarez, Hazard and Yaya - "point snorers". They score points so consistently, they make teams dull 😉

But that's just it... there isn't. Cabaye sold, Walcott injured, Mata/Valencia/Nani/Young non-existent. We're now down to the likes of Gerrard, Lallana, B-part Man Citeh midfielders and other mids where there's more luck than reliably frisking the fixtures.

Add your Sturridge (Lukaku even), Baines and 2 Chelsea defenders and you're good to go - for the entire season!

I think the point is to have them and then find your diffs elsewhere TS. Not having them is simply going to leave you struggling to keep up.

I don't see how different it is from when Ronaldo, Lampard and Fabregas were constantly banging them in

The only difference here is that people think that Yaya Toure is a classic defensive midfielder and never admit that he actually does push forward in attacks and is an incredible finisher so they never bought him in

I'm surprised by the responses tbh, the point isn't that there are a few big hitters this season (there always is), but the lack of alternatives where you can still compete picking equally as good options. The diversity of eligible players in which to compete is much less this year... There's a smaller pool to select from.

arent the same as last yr where the big 5 + suarez rvp dominates the points for most periods? just that last season all of those players play in attacking positions so its easy to identify and get them in asap..

while this season deep lying players such as ramsey yaya gerrard etc getting all the points..and sturridge also break the idea of "putting all in the basket"..thus we are more inclined to bring them in thus resulting in failures for some.

Yes...Sunderland did a good job on Liverpool last week despite losing...I'd expect Sherwood to have noted that ( if he's any good as a manager) and employ similar tactics...BR to keep things fresh would be my guess, but you'll be back to square one next week.

Don't agree. Can't think that Sherwood will go in with the same mentality as Poyet hoping for a 0-0 result. Think TS will go in trying to win it and subsequently be handed a bare-bottomed spanking by Liverpool.

As Mark alludes to in the article, I actually believe that last year was pretty much as template as this year can be looked at being - just a different kind of template. Michu for example (and the Power 5 midfield etc etc).

As Ive said before, adapting is key in this game, the changing of the FPL scoring rules, the shifting of the Premierleague itself from more defensive returns (when FPL first started) to more goals in the last few years.

Much like last year, I look forward to next year when everyone who had a good year this year and now thinks they are some kind of FPL god, will buy the same players to start the season with (Michu anyone?).

Then a few months down the line they will no doubt bitch about the fact that its the year of inadvertent or recreational manager. 😀

I think there were more options with the potential to rival the top points scorers week to week - I think there was less consistency on show. Maybe I'm kidding myself but it seemed that way.

I will agree that Walcott is a big miss. However, every year is near enough the same; a few key players emerge that are must haves really.

The consistency point may be valid, but for me that comes under the banner of adapt or die. I only hopped on the Yaya wagon 2-3 weeks back. When Aguero is back (and stays back!) I may actually ditch him, and i very much doubt ill buy him at the start of next season.

The article re read like sour grapes - and makes no mention of the vast array of quality defensive options available this year.
All summer we saw articles showing that the change in bonus payouts was going to benefit defenders, but that isn't mentioned here.
If you picked Yaya, Ramsey, Gerrard, Hazard, Sturridge from the start you might have been able to paper over a poor defence but if you did invest in a good defence it would have helped you keep pace.

A good point but hasn't there been a clear template here too?

Get on Southampton, then get on Arsenal, then get on Chelsea. In between that, get Hull and Palace cheapies with Manonne in goal.

Aside from Coleman's goals, it's been predictable enough I reckon. The trick has been when to move off one form defence to the next.

Surely every season there is a template defence, rarely will lots of tems get lots of clean sheets.
Midfield this year has been very poor for options but attack could pick up now especially if Aguero stays fit

Koscielny is protected in price on totalfpl but went down 0.1 last night, what the Hell, I needed that 0.1 for a future transfer.

Can't wait to sell Evra and Mata and be rid of United players.

Got 7 gameweeks to catch up on my rival's 50 point lead. He has SAS with Suarez captain. Do I take the risk and go with Lukaku(C) because he doesnt have him?

I don't think so. He usually lacks explosiveness.
