Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 33

We scour the post-match reports and injury rooms after the weekend’s matches in order to discover those players who picked up problems over Saturday and Sunday’s nine matches:

Arsenal
The Gunners back-up keeper Lukasz Fabianksi missed yesterday’s trip to Goodison through illness.

Aston Villa
Fabian Delph missed Saturday’s home loss to Fulham with an Achilles problem, though Paul Lambert is confident the midfielder will be in contention for next week’s trip to Palace

“Delph trained on yesterday and was a bit sore. He’s feeling a bit sore at the back of his legs at the minute, hopefully he’ll be all right for next week. I think there was a risk that if he’s played he might have pulled something.”

Chelsea
Andre Schurrle picked up a foot problem in Saturday evening’s win over Stoke following a challenge by Charlie Adam. After the game, Jose Mourinho seemed confident the German would be available for tomorrow’s Champions League clash with PSG:

“I believe he will be okay to play. I like aggressive football and I can’t get inside the mind of a player to decide if the intention was to hurt or not, so it’s fine for me.”

Everton
Leon Osman was forced off with an eye injury just 10 minutes into Sunday’s win over Arsenal. After the game, Roberto Martinez confirmed the midfielder should be ready for the Toffees’ clash against Sunderland next weekend:

“Leon’s really lucky to avoid serious injury. He’s got a nasty cut that needed stitches on top of his eye and his eyelid was affected. But he’s fine and will be fine for the weekend.”

Hull
Tom Huddlestone missed the 1-0 win over Swansea with a back problem. The midfielder took to Twitter to reveal his omission was merely precautionary, with Steve Bruce perhaps having one eye on next weekend’s FA Cup semi-final with Sheffield United.

Liverpool
Daniel Agger missed yesterday’s trip to West Ham after picking up a knee problem in training, Brendan Rodgers has confirmed. Speaking to Sky Sports prior to the 2-1 Upton Park win, the Liverpool boss revealed:

“Daniel hurt his knee and had to come out of training and isn’t able to play. It shouldn’t be too serious – he’s just had to miss today and was touch and go.”

Man City
Yaya Toure picked up a knock in the home win over Southampton, Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed. The City boss is optimistic the problem is not serious ahead of double Gameweek 34.

Man United
Ashley Young was subbed off less than 20 minutes into United’s emphatic win at Newcastle after damaging ligaments in his hand, David Moyes has confirmed. Patrice Evra is also a concern for the Red Devils ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Bayern. The Frenchman revealed he was forced off at St James’ Park with an ongoing knee problem but told the club’s official website “I think I will be fit” to face Pep Guardiola’s side.

Southampton
Jay Rodriguez lasted less than half an hour of Saturday’s loss at City before being stretchered off with a potentially serious knee injury. Mauricio Pochettino admitted after the game he fears the Saints’ top scorer could be out for the remainder of the season. Artur Boruc and Gaston Ramirez missed the Etihad clash with a minor back problem and ankle knock respectively.

Stoke
Stephen Ireland missed out of the Potters’ visit to Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening through illness.

West Brom
Midfield duo Graham Dorrans and Zoltan Gera were both forced off with injuries in the weekend win at Norwich, according to the local press. Dorrans left the field on 77 minutes and was replaced by Gera but the Hungarian lasted just six minutes before sustaining a suspected hamstring problem.

A friend of mine works as a coach for Cardiff City and he keeps tabs with most other coaches at other clubs and he had this gem to tell me about Manchester United:

After 7/8 games, David Moyes called in the entire squad to watch a video, this particular video was about the defense of Everton, a certain game where they played with 2 back 4s, how they moved forward and back together in tandem and how Moyes wanted them to do just this...

From the back there is a hand raised for a question. it's Rio Ferdinand 'So this is how you want us to defend?' Moyes replies yes. Ferdinand puts his hand up again 'What did Everton win though with this defence?' Silence fills the room, Moyes begins to tear into Rio Ferdinand, 5 minutes later, Rio puts his hand up again 'What have you won as manager?'. Moyes calls off the meeting, this was when Ferdinand publicly slated Moyes' last-minute team selection also.

Shows the complete lack of trust and respect they have for David Moyes. It also shows how Ferdinand, as a senior player, is completely undermining the new boss, shambles! Just another outlook on the comedy in progress at United (I support United )

more like he was asked a question and answered, if you read his quotes all he said was that doing it this way made it harder to prepare mentally for a match and that he was just used to the old way under Ferguson..

and even still this is 100% different than calling out your manager in the middle of a team session.

Did you not hear that one? That was another apparently. In defensive drills Moyes is reported to have told his defenders to judge any situation by asking themselves "What would Phil Jagielka do?"

The other one was that Carrick was apparently made to watch 2 hours of Leon Osman clips to "improve his game" FML 😆

So Ive basically now planned out all my transfers up to GW37, beautiful.

    Mannone (Adrian)
    Coleman, Dann, Kolarov (Koscielny, Vlaar)
    Haz, Yaya, Barkley, Puncheon (Gerrard)
    Suarez, Lukaku, Aguero

    Unless injury strikes again.

This week, Aguero, Lukaku, Kolarov in (-4) (9 DGWers)
    Next, save transfer.
Then 4 point hit: Coleman, Hazard, Lukaku to Evra, Ramsey, Rooney
    Gerrard to Mata.

    8 DGWers in GW37. Beautiful.

Take a punt on my transfer in GW38 on someone with a good fixture. Maybe even Rooney to Sturridge.

I can see absolutely no problems with this, only thing is there is zero chance of me following through on this as I will get injuries, players will lose/gain form and I will change my mind. Nice outline to have though. Or Koscielny will fail to recover and i'll have to get rid of him. Or Barkley and Puncheon won't provide adequate cover as rotating 4th/5th mids. Any thoughts?

does decent have a different connotation in England than in the US?

here in the US, it's pretty much synonymous with "eh, it's ok"

      Brits always underplay things.

If we say something's decent, we mean its great.
If we say something's not bad, we mean its good, not average

      Likewise with negatives:
      Not great = Poor
      I've seen better = Terrible
In a spot of bother = Mortal peril

Tone matters too though, so 'its alright' said unconvincingly means its terrible and someone doesn't want to hurt your feelings

I've been trying to find a way to get Mata in, I can't see any other way, but once Hazard is gone, he's gone, will cost too much to get back. I'll also need to judge who else is fit. Rooney and RvP, especially RvP seem to hinder Mata. I think if they're both fit I'll avoid, if only one, I might go for it.

Yeah, but Hazard has Norwich the following week, does he not ? (Without checking , I think this is the case...). I have been wanting to do this as well, but Haz could easily do well on this run in, and my two rivals now don't have him, so he could prove useful for me to own...
