Scout Notes – Gameweek 35 – Monday

Sergio Aguero grabs a goal and assist as City return to winning ways at home to West Brom. David Silva is stretchered off with his recurring ankle injury, whilst Yaya Toure is expected back in training ahead of the weekend trip to Palace. Pablo Zabaleta and Martin Demichelis also find the net, though a strike from Graham Dorrans ensures the hosts have failed to register a shut-out in five attempts:

Aguero Steers City to Victory
Manuel Pellegrini dropped Alvaro Negredo and handed Edin Dzeko a start alongside the Argentine in a 4-4-2 formation last night. Back amongst the goals for the first time since Gameweek 23, Aguero supplied the assist for City’s opener and netted the second before being withdrawn just after the hour mark, as his manager continues to court caution with his game time. With the maximum bonus also accrued, Aguero’s display highlights the fact that, whilst he may not be given the full 90 minutes just yet, he’s more than capable of delivering the returns regardless. As doubts hang over City’s other main men, his appeal is set to rise ahead of the upcoming double as the clamour for his acquisition intensifies amongst Fantasy managers.

Silva Concern for Pellegrini
After being all but ruled out by his manager in Friday afternoon’s press conference, David Silva made a rapid recovery in time for yesterday evening’s encounter. The Spaniard’s night lasted 69 minutes before a challenge from the Baggies’ Morgan Amalfitano saw him land awkwardly on the very ankle that forced him to miss last week’s home clash against Sunderland. Stretchered from the pitch in some discomfort, there will be real question marks over Silva’s chances of making next weekend’s trip to Palace, and with Pellegrini previously admitting his playmaker is unable to feature twice within a week, many owners may be looking for an exit route.

After the game, Pellegrini rolled out an update on Silva’s situation:

“Hopefully it will be a short-term injury. It is hard to tell without the doctors giving their assessment. David played the last games with pain in his ankle. That is why it was impossible for him to play against Sunderland because after three days he can’t recover from his problem. We will see tomorrow [Wednesday] what happens with him. His injury started with a kick some weeks ago and every week he plays in the last game with pain.”

Reports suggest Yaya Toure is due be back in training tomorrow, though, with the Ivorian potentially in line for a return to action in time for Sunday’s trip to Selhurst Park, providing he can step up his recovery from a groin problem.

City Defenders in the Points
It’s five games without a clean sheet for Pellegrini’s charges after the Baggies breached Joe Hart’s goal last night. City’s defensive regulars still managed to pick up the points, though, with Pablo Zabaleta and Martin Demichelis each grabbing a goal, whilst Vincent Kompany chipped in with an assist and a single bonus point – whilst their defensive resolve has certainly lessened, owners will be content for now after last night’s returns. The same can hardly be said for Aleksandar Kolarov, though – omitted from the starting XI for the fourth time in the last six games, the Serbian was afforded a two-minute cameo just before the final whistle, thus depriving Fantasy managers of a replacement off the bench. For many, last night’s frustrating turn of events may well be the final straw.

Dorrans in the Goals Again
The Scot grabbed his side’s consolation in last night’s 3-1 defeat, taking his tally to a couple of goals in the last four fixtures. With the maximum bonus points also picked up, Dorrans’ 10-point haul was his highest of the season and suggests that, at 4.4, he could be worth considering for the upcoming double Gameweek 37 as a means to free up cash elsewhere. With upcoming home showdowns against West Ham and Stoke also still to follow, his contribution could be key for a Baggies side that had won three and drawn one of the five matches prior to last night’s defeat.

Defensive Concerns for Mel
The Baggies were without Gareth McAuley for the Etihad encounter after the Northern Ireland international picked up a calf problem in training late last week. Pepe Mel’s problems at the back continued after Liam Ridgewell sustained an ankle injury which could even keep him out for the rest of the season. Chris Brunt owners won’t be too pleased by the news that he is expected to shift into the left-back berth if Ridgewell is indeed ruled out for the weekend game against West Ham.

I got him in last GW and am viewing it as a huge error of judgement.

He played very deep last night, doesn't make bursting runs into the box, and generally seems to play the game walking.

Leaving aside the fact that Mirallas to Nasri (-4) cost me 11 points, I'm now stuck with him and can't get Yaya for the double without taking a hit for a sideways move.

    Mannone
    Demichelis-Cahill-Coleman (Collins-John)
    Ramsey-Lallana-Mata-Eriksen (Januzaj)
    Agüero-Suarez-Giroud

    CB - Mangala
    LB - Shaw
    CM x 2 - Kroos, Carvalho
RB - As back up to Rafael. No more of this Smalling/Jones business

    Job done.

Get LVG in to steady the ship, so much experience, one pretty much everything at club level and loves to play young players which will be great for Januzaj's development.

Gives us a better shot at signing Kroos with LVG the man who brought him through.

Also, it's just a power play to get a new contract that puts him on the same level as the likes of Thiago and Gotze.

Main player at a club like United who have what, one season out of the CL - or a rotation player at a club like Bayern.

Both clubs are equal in stature if we're being honest, Moyes hasn't destroyed our history in 10 months and we ran Bayern pretty damn close even with him at the helm. Players will want to join.

He's not a rotation player though. He's started virtually every game this season, including the important ones.

I can't see players who play for top European clubs wanting to move to Man U this Summer. You'd be better off targeting the likes of Lallana and Shaw, and then players at lesser sides (Carvalho etc.)

30M+ for a left back with potential. He's still very vulnerable defensively.

I'm sure there's better prospects out there (not English!) for cheaper prices.

Kroos is just trying to get a better contract, why would he leave Bayern for a non-CL team.

Again, one season without CL isn't a massive deal. United will be back in it next season, that is pretty much guaranteed. Kroos has always dreamt of playing for United - he hasn't kept that a secret. If SAF was still managing, I reckon he'd have already agreed a transfer.

Agreed £30m is a lot, I wouldn't look past £20m personally but he has shown he is worth it and he has so much time to develop even further, it could be a great bit of business.

I disagree, missing out on the CL is huge for players, surely they'd rather wait 12 months and see if they are going to be back in the season after.

And saying you'll be back in the top 4 next season guaranteed is a step too far. Whilst I do think you'll recover well next season, City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, even Spurs and Everton will all have a chance of finishing ahead of you again next season.

That doesn't solve the Mata / RVP / Roo / Kagawa / Welback conundrum where they all want to play in just 2 positions.

United have the money to spend, it's just a case of spending sensibly. Thing is, we're going to have so many outs this summer (likes of Evra, Cleverley, Rio, Vidic, Nani, Anderson all pretty much guaranteed exits - even Hernandez, Young maybe) there will be funds made available for re-investment.

If we bring in the right coach, the board will happy give him the funds to secure Champions League qualification next year.

Ginter and a more experienced player to line along with him like Garay.

      CM

Carvalho is expensive but regardless, Song should be signed.

      LB

I'd take Coentrao. Others available though. Same at the RB. They need to decide if they're going to persist with wingers.

This has already been covered in the papers - he is guaranteed game time at United, whereas the other two have other options. Chelsea and Liverpool are out of the race for him, Shaw is just now deciding whether he wants to move now or not.

Is anyone 6.8 or less worth a hit for Kevin Nolan?

Desperate to get rid of him but can't see any viable options and am prioritizing Rooney in as my first transfer.

Sess isn't a bad shout actually, I've been considering Amalfitano.

All of these look dubious shouts for a hit though, and after my disaster hit this week (Mirallas to Nasri), I'm wary of doing the same again this GW.

    now then all!

i know my dilemma is a mental one, any advice please... A or B?

    A) rooney nasri sturridge, less hits

GW36 Mutch > Ramsey, Lukaku > Rooney (4 point hit)
GW37 Baines > Alonso, Puncheon > Nasri (4 point hit)
GW38 Rooney > Sturridge, Coleman > Skrtel (4 point hit)

    or

    B) suarez in and out, rooney, mata, yaya, wickham, gerrard but more hits

GW36 Mutch > Ramsey, Suarez > Rooney, Puncheon > Mata (8 point hit)
GW37 Sterling > Yaya, Lukaku > Wickham, Coleman > Chester (8 point hit)
GW38 Rooney > Suarez, Mata > Gerrard (4 point hit)

yes there'll be hits involved but i often do, am 30 and 60 pointsd ahead in my 2 leagues.

    many thanks

I'm considering something similar but can't figure out if it's worth it. To bring in Roo for Luk I'd need to take a -8 by either:

          (a) Lallana - Eriksen / AJ / Sterling
          (b) Downgrade Coleman to e.g. Sagna / Kos / Smalling
          (c) Downgrade Howard to a 3.9m and play Mannone (which I plan to anyway)

Or could do one this week, Roon the next.
