Scout Notes – Gameweek 35 – Monday

Sergio Aguero grabs a goal and assist as City return to winning ways at home to West Brom. David Silva is stretchered off with his recurring ankle injury, whilst Yaya Toure is expected back in training ahead of the weekend trip to Palace. Pablo Zabaleta and Martin Demichelis also find the net, though a strike from Graham Dorrans ensures the hosts have failed to register a shut-out in five attempts:

Aguero Steers City to Victory
Manuel Pellegrini dropped Alvaro Negredo and handed Edin Dzeko a start alongside the Argentine in a 4-4-2 formation last night. Back amongst the goals for the first time since Gameweek 23, Aguero supplied the assist for City’s opener and netted the second before being withdrawn just after the hour mark, as his manager continues to court caution with his game time. With the maximum bonus also accrued, Aguero’s display highlights the fact that, whilst he may not be given the full 90 minutes just yet, he’s more than capable of delivering the returns regardless. As doubts hang over City’s other main men, his appeal is set to rise ahead of the upcoming double as the clamour for his acquisition intensifies amongst Fantasy managers.

Silva Concern for Pellegrini
After being all but ruled out by his manager in Friday afternoon’s press conference, David Silva made a rapid recovery in time for yesterday evening’s encounter. The Spaniard’s night lasted 69 minutes before a challenge from the Baggies’ Morgan Amalfitano saw him land awkwardly on the very ankle that forced him to miss last week’s home clash against Sunderland. Stretchered from the pitch in some discomfort, there will be real question marks over Silva’s chances of making next weekend’s trip to Palace, and with Pellegrini previously admitting his playmaker is unable to feature twice within a week, many owners may be looking for an exit route.

After the game, Pellegrini rolled out an update on Silva’s situation:

“Hopefully it will be a short-term injury. It is hard to tell without the doctors giving their assessment. David played the last games with pain in his ankle. That is why it was impossible for him to play against Sunderland because after three days he can’t recover from his problem. We will see tomorrow [Wednesday] what happens with him. His injury started with a kick some weeks ago and every week he plays in the last game with pain.”

Reports suggest Yaya Toure is due be back in training tomorrow, though, with the Ivorian potentially in line for a return to action in time for Sunday’s trip to Selhurst Park, providing he can step up his recovery from a groin problem.

City Defenders in the Points
It’s five games without a clean sheet for Pellegrini’s charges after the Baggies breached Joe Hart’s goal last night. City’s defensive regulars still managed to pick up the points, though, with Pablo Zabaleta and Martin Demichelis each grabbing a goal, whilst Vincent Kompany chipped in with an assist and a single bonus point – whilst their defensive resolve has certainly lessened, owners will be content for now after last night’s returns. The same can hardly be said for Aleksandar Kolarov, though – omitted from the starting XI for the fourth time in the last six games, the Serbian was afforded a two-minute cameo just before the final whistle, thus depriving Fantasy managers of a replacement off the bench. For many, last night’s frustrating turn of events may well be the final straw.

Dorrans in the Goals Again
The Scot grabbed his side’s consolation in last night’s 3-1 defeat, taking his tally to a couple of goals in the last four fixtures. With the maximum bonus points also picked up, Dorrans’ 10-point haul was his highest of the season and suggests that, at 4.4, he could be worth considering for the upcoming double Gameweek 37 as a means to free up cash elsewhere. With upcoming home showdowns against West Ham and Stoke also still to follow, his contribution could be key for a Baggies side that had won three and drawn one of the five matches prior to last night’s defeat.

Defensive Concerns for Mel
The Baggies were without Gareth McAuley for the Etihad encounter after the Northern Ireland international picked up a calf problem in training late last week. Pepe Mel’s problems at the back continued after Liam Ridgewell sustained an ankle injury which could even keep him out for the rest of the season. Chris Brunt owners won’t be too pleased by the news that he is expected to shift into the left-back berth if Ridgewell is indeed ruled out for the weekend game against West Ham.

Silva won't play both in the DGW anyway, Pellegrini has said he can't play twice in a week.

I'd get Ramsey in no matter what, Silva's injury just makes it easy imo.

Wait if you want to give Silva a chance for the dgw though.

    How am I looking after a -4?

    Boruc
    Smalling Coleman Vlaar
    DGM Eriksen Gerrard Nasri
    Suarez Aguero Rooney

    Bench: McGregor; Mirallas Cahill Ward.

Thinking Aguero (c) as a differential, as I don't think CPL will be that much of an issue for City's offensive power (plus, penalty potential). Thoughts appreciated.

Mirallas -> Ramsey worth another -4?

Whats the point in giving a manager a 6 year contract, if your just going to bag him the first sign of trouble? It was always going to be like this after Sir Alex imo and anyone would have struggled. Rash decision imo

It's hard to call it rash. I think Moyes is a decent manager, but it was clear United was a step above him. The players clearly weren't happy or motivated with him, his press conferences and post-match interviews seemed to suggest he thought the team were going in the right direction, and this squad should not be 7th place after winning the PL last year minus Fellaini and Mata.

The problem is if United were playing good football and not getting the results, you could argue that is a transition period and it'll come together next season. Instead, we became extremely one dimensional with no back up plan. It's why we couldn't beat the bigger teams, they can defend crosses all day long.

There's no point giving him an extended stay in the hope that he completely changes his philosophy, training methods and learns the level of tactical awareness necessary at United. It'd have been unfair on him, and the amount of money he has already cost the club would quickly have risen. Cut your losses before it gets worse.

Where do United fans think the money for transfers will come from?

    1. The Glazers have no reserves as they saddled the club with debts to buy them (called leverage in business).
    2. United's poor season will dent revenues from around the world as a sizable proportion of the fans are glory supporters.
    3. They have lost CL revenue.
    4. Their Premier league season position bonus will be down.
    5. Moyes bought players in both of his transfer windows, not many but Fell and Mata were expensive.
    6. Liverpool and Everton's increased revenues form European qualification will see them push up prices in the market, not mention mourinho's desired reshuffle.

Unless they sell players that mostly aren't wanted by anyone there'll surely not be massive changes at OT..

It's been pretty well advertised that we have around £150 million we can splurge out on. We have sponsorship deals and revenue streams that most football clubs could only dream of - and if it secures Champions League football at Old Trafford next year, we will definitely spend.

That Chevy deal is really something mysterious. It smells fishy, it really does. Who on earth would have gone for that cheap trick, seriously!? How many fans did ManU claim they have again? it was some billions... or at minimum a billion or something. A ridiculous number in any case.

Yeah. What I always wondered is that when it was revealed that one of the main reasons why that contract was signed was those billions of fans that ManU have and that this number was based on a very fecked up interpretation of a cheap internet survey, how come did GM not cancel the deal. I was always pretty sure that they would have had a legal way to do it, especially as it was signed by one person who was fired because of it.

There may still be ways for them to squirm out of that deal, and i wouldn't be surprised if they did. I think it starts this year precisely, doesn't it?

additional debt will be leveraged. Some will come from player sales. Don't forget all the money they get anyway from the tv deal. They will be able to 'scrape together' £150m if necessary. Probably they won't manage to get any top players tho, as usual.

Yeah, that's true. The broadcasting payments will be higher in general. But not that high. It means, to quote BBC, that the winners may get as much as £100M in TV-rights. If last year ManU got £60M. I think it may be over £100M for the winners. And now that I think of it, that £40M is probably underestimation of what 7th placed will get, but seen that the rise is mostly in domestic money that is distributed half according to league position and amount of broadcasting time, it will not be more than what they got last season. Not sure how much ManU has been showed in UK, but I'd imagine this new unattractive style has not made them more broadcasted than they were before, I'd wager it has got them much less tv-time, and they are now 7th, that's a bit far from the top.

i'm not sure of all the numbers but they also get a lot of overseas tv deals and various other revenue streams

That's overseas included. Domestic money last season was less than £30M for ManU, and that was most of the lot obviously. Will be significantly less this season, both from TV_money and from prize money as they finish lower and are broadcasted less. Next season also missing CL, which usually makes ManU a huge check, tens of millions of pounds worth.

There will be less money in ManU next season than there was this season, and they are already about to spend £37M on some DM with zero international experience.

But, that said, the new domestic deal is more lucrative, so all teams together are going to get more than what they did before. That probably still doesn't get 7th placed ManU up to higher than what they got when winning. Maybe something like £30M-£40M is realistic? We'll see.

I dont think'll do too badly if they utilize their scouts and actually try to unearth some gems. There are several players in Portugal, Holland (as you know), Ukraine and Switzerland who would jump at the chance to play for United even if they are out of Europe.

A problem they will face though is that clubs know the difficulties which United face so will ask for a premium price

This is true, the massive personnel structure at united will be heavily tested here, though the scout team hardly worked last summer eh.

Shopping in Portugal is not for budget buyers, you find the prices most inflated just there. And that's just what ManU is about to do.

Holland, Switzerland, France, Belgium.... these are places where you can find top players for little money.

True, but that's more in the realm of Arsenal territory eh, hardly united's forte or where they want to be.

Tough deal to them then. Go to Portugal and you will overpay. Just look at all these Bebes, Nanis and Hulks strolling around.

France is very exploitable now, because they have this tight financial control that prevents them from keeping players with big contracts, so they have to sell rather easily. Germany is less exploitable each season, because they make huge money there. Belgium is a gold mine.

And, Mourinho is not desiring to reshuffle. He has said he needs to work with his young team longer to make them champions. He wants a new striker, that's all.

This was just an example. The six teams finishing above them will have more premier league money heading their way and for some European money too. Utd could easily be priced out of the market or forced to pay double what a player is otherwise worth. - Especially in this day and age when every club knows who other clubs are after.

A bit like Liverpool lost the competition for practically every player that anybody else wanted last summer, and ended up paying first rate prices for second rate players like Aspas and Luiz Alberto. Only good deal they got was Sakho, and that was probably because they were keen to react fast when a surprising opportunity was presented. That deal can turn pure gold to them.

Hah. Amazing. Totally crap GW, yet a green arrow and almost back to top 10k!!!! Now just a couple of good punts (must, because I have 2 players out of favor and 3 players injured, possibly 4), and I'm back in top 10k!!! In these conditions, that must be called a success.
