Scout Picks

Scout Picks – Gameweek 36

Three of the top four supply this week’s Scout Picks with a pair of players apiece. We double up on Liverpool, City and Arsenal and also call upon a couple of United options as the Red Devils look to go on the attack in Ryan Giggs’ first match in charge at home to struggling Norwich:

We opt for David De Gea between the posts for United’s home game against Norwich. With so much uncertainty surrounding the back-four in Ryan Giggs’ first game as boss, the Spaniard looks a secure pick against a Canaries side that has failed to score in three of their last four fixtures and are sliding closer to the bottom three with every passing Gameweek.

Leighton Baines finally edges past Seamus Coleman as our Everton defender of choice this weekend. The Toffees will be looking to keep their bid for a fourth-place finish on track as they roll up to St Mary’s, and with Southampton failing to score in each of the last two since Jay Rodriguez’ season-ending injury, the visitors will be optimistic of delivering a fourth clean sheet in five. With two goals and a pair of assists in his last seven, the left-back has risen to third in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rankings thanks to his recent form.

Arsenal’s home game against Newcastle brings Laurent Koscielny into this week’s Picks. The Frenchman has dropped to 5.4 in FPL, with just 7% ownership, after a recent stint on the sidelines with a calf complaint. Fully fit once again, he has earned bonus on each of the last seven occasions his side have delivered a clean sheet and will fancy his chances of extending that streak, given that the Magpies have scored a mere two goals over their last seven matches.

Sunderland’s Marcos Alonso earns a rare call-up for a home showdown with Cardiff. The left-back has looked a real threat going forward in recent weeks and his underlying statistics may well come to fruition this time around – defensive returns could also be on the cards against a Bluebirds side that has scored just twice in the last three Gameweeks since tightening up at the back.

Having served up his highest haul of the season away to Hull last week, Aaron Ramsey looks in the mood to deliver the points for Arsenal’s home clash with Newcastle. The Welshman’s goal and pair of assists served a reminder of just how crucial he was in the first half of the season before injury deprived the Gunners of his services for three months – almost 250,000 Fantasy managers have snapped him up this week as Arsene Wenger’s side look for the win that will keep them ahead of Everton in the race for fourth.

A trip to fortress Britannia is no easy task but we cannot ignore the form of Christian Eriksen. The Spurs playmaker has delivered 55 points in his last five appearances and looks integral to his side’s prospects this weekend – Tim Sherwood’s troops have scored three or more goals in four of their last five, with Eriksen playing a part in nine of their 14 strikes over that period.

With three goals and an assist in the last two Gameweeks, Raheem Sterling more than merits a place in this week’s line-up. The Liverpool winger looks in irresistible form right now, and with Jose Mourinho threatening to field a weakened starting XI due to the upcoming Champions League clash against Atletico, the Reds will go for the jugular, knowing that a win would be a giant step towards clinching the title.

Yaya Toure looks poised for a return as City prepare to travel to Palace on Sunday afternoon. With David Silva ruled out through injury, the Ivorian’s goal threat from midfield will be more vital than ever as Manuel Pellegrini’s side look to end the Eagles’ five-match winning streak and stay within reach of Liverpool at the summit. Granted, Sergio Aguero’s return is likely to deprive him of spot-kick duties, but six converted penalties aside, Toure has still scored 12 times and provided five assists thus far.

In any given Gameweek, it’s almost an irrelevance who Luis Suarez squares up to, such has been his outstanding season. This weekend, however, is Liverpool’s most crucial match of the campaign so far, given that a victory over Chelsea would end the Blues’ title bid and bring the Reds a step closer to the crown – with both John Terry and Petr Cech sidelined, the Uruguayan will be confident of taking full advantage of Jose Mourinho’s patched-up backline in Sunday’s Anfield showdown.

City’s trip to Palace is far from straightforward this weekend. Tony Pulis’ side have registered four clean sheets in the last five, but if the visitors are to keep their title tilt alive, Sergio Aguero’s contribution looks key. The Argentine was handed just over an hour against West Brom on Monday evening but still found time to deliver a 12-point haul – Manuel Pellegrini’s side cannot afford any more slip-ups and can be expected to go on the offensive on Sunday, with Aguero leading the charge.

Six goals in his last seven appearances indicates Wayne Rooney’s consistency. United may have toiled under David Moyes but the England international has still managed to pick up the points – Ryan Giggs will send out his side to play with the handbrake off as the champions attempt to finish the season with a positive run of performances and Rooney could take full advantage of a Norwich backline that has been breached 12 times in their last four road trips.

Swansea’s Ben Davies warms the bench for Swansea’s home game against Villa. Paul Lambert’s side have scored just once in the three matches since Christian Benteke was ruled out for the season and look particularly toothless up top right now, whilst Davies’ raids from left-back earned him an assist only last week in a crucial win at Newcastle.

Two goals and an assist in his last four appearances highlight Morgan Amalfitano’s flourishing form. Available for just 4.2 and with a double Gameweek on the horizon, the West Brom midfielder has the perfect chance to grab our attention as West Ham roll up to the Hawthorns, with a win set to take Pepe Mel’s men to within a point of their opponents.

Wilfried Bony is perhaps a little unlucky only to make the bench. The Ivorian bagged a brace and 13-point haul in the previous Gameweek to take his tally to 14 for the season – he looks in fine form as Swansea welcome Villa to the Liberty this weekend, with a win perhaps enough to clinch their top-flight survival for another season.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Well, seeing as the armband should go to Rooney this week I think it's A)...

The bookies have him @ -200 for any 'anytime goal' which is by far & away the best odds to score.

Further, you're making an investment in a DGWer w/ spectacular fixtures to boot...

Finally, we can beat the Nets but, god damn those refs are one tough nut to crack!

    Innsie's Weekly DZ Draft!

Pick 4 players for the upcoming GW only, with a total combined price of 23m (or less). Current FPL prices will be used. The weekly winner is the person whose combined 4 players score the most FPL points in the upcoming GW.

To nullify my advantage of picking first, I am not allowed to pick anyone from the top 4 (Liverpool, Chelsea, City, Arsenal).

    Rules:
    - No captains
    - Players can be picked from all 4 positions: GK, DEF, MID, FWD
    - A maximum of TWO players can be picked from the same PL team
    - A maximum of TWO players can be picked in the same position (eg. You can't pick 3 strikers)
    - Once a player has been chosen by someone, the same player cannot be chosen again.

Please make sure your 4 players are under the 23m budget to save me from having to go and check myself.

Note: The placings for last week's picks were:
1st: Nice to Finally Michu (28)
    2nd: Innsie (26)
    3rd: The Enlightener (24)

    My picks:
    Bony, Januzaj, Holtby, Ben Davies

probably will end up one of those stories that goes on all summer, and then Utd will publicly have to settle for their second choice.

IMO they'd be stupid not to pursue Roberto Martinez. Do Utd secretly hope Everton doesn't make the top four, because he's their man?

They'd be crazy to go for Martinez, it'd be making the same mistake of appointing someone in a similar position as was when they hired him Moyes, bar one FA cup trophy to his name but he relegated a fairly okay Wigan team.
Alright Laudrup only has a domestic cup name to his managerial name too but he's a legend of the game and would be capable of handling the egos and commanding respect at United, plus he seems like a smart guy and has won nearly everything in the game.
Heynckes would be an even better fit, he molded that Munich team and had them playing brilliant attractive football until Pep took over and had them play a possession at all costs snoozefest style.

Then what is the explanation for Brendan Rodgers, who managed the same Swansea team better than Laudrup could have?

I like Laudrup, but his "attractive football" and being a legend of the game really hasn't got him much to show for his efforts.

I think something may have been going on behind the scenes with Laudrup and Swansea. Perhaps something to do with his grandeur compared to the club's "modest" expectations.

Swansea won their first and only ever piece of silverware under Laudrup, I wouldn't say Rodgers did a better job they both did well. And if United could get Rodger now, they would.
Laudrup's previously said he wanted to manage smaller clubs to learn his trade as a coach and his name was being touted by the media as the next Real manager less than a year ago.

I don't see the appeal with Laudrup. He's a Danish AVB... all haircut and tailor and pedigree, but no end product.

Rodgers got 11th place with no Michu, Chico Flores, or Pablo Hernandez, Jon de Guzman.

Laudrup got 9th with those 4 last season, and is now on track for 11th/12th.

I don't understand your point... Laudrup signed those 4 players you listed, surely that should be an endorsement of his managerial vision rather than saying Rodgers did great without them...
He won the league cup with Swansea which is about as good as an end product you could possibly hope for with a club like Swansea, it's not like his brief wasn't to challenge for champion's leage

                So, what I mean is

                2011-12 (Rodgers) Swansea
                + Michu, Flores, Hernandez, DeGuzman
                + Laudrup

= a team that will finish this season inferior to Newcastle, Stoke and Crystal Palace????
... who are battling for 11th with Sam Allardyce's West Ham?

If I were a Swansea fan, I'd be begging Real to take him away.

I guess what I mean is that I enjoy watching Swansea, but they've lost something. They earned promotion, bought modestly, and stormed the PL with Championship players. (well, and Sigurdsson)

I watch them when I can, and they've lost the edge. They are not a team suffering with injuries. They didn't have their Yohan Cabaye leave midseason. They are not unlucky, they're just not good! And they're the same players as 2 seasons ago, so what's the problem?

A manager who lets this happen is NOT worthy of a top, top gig at a CL team, IMO.
I only know what I see for 90 minutes, and what I see is a team that isn't motivated.

You do know that Laudrup is not the Swansea manager anymore, don't you? Not trying to sound crass....just wondering.

yeah, I do, sorry I'm tired. I just did the math and they are
6-5-11 with Laudrup this season, and
                    3-4-6 since Laudrup left.

It's not science, so I know there are no formulas for "what's the problem here", but it seems to me that if Laudrup were a true managerial talent, it would be easier to see it in the numbers.

I think Laudrup may have soured on the whole Swansea gig. There was some shite going down behind the scenes, from what I remember hearing. He did well at first. The team was never great either, so it's not like he had a lot of top notch talent to work with. I'd like to see what he might be able to do at another club of bigger ilk. Would be interesting if nothing else.

Certainly Laudrup's pedigree is greater than AVB's. In general terms relating to football, at least. The guy was stellar on the pitch. AVB never played.......not professionally at least. And, not sure how he quite rose to such "prominence" in the first place. I was researching him a bit, and it kind of seems like he just fell into.....thanks to Sir Bobby Robson. It's almost a fairy tale story.

I'm not arguing whose pedigree is better/worse, only that pedigree may as well be a shiny sticker for all the good it does.

You may have a point there. A lot about life depends on timing, the person's dedication at the moment, and other variables. Luck is a big factor too, and encompasses all kinds of variables in and of itself. Both AVB and Laudrup had shiny moments in their past, and they will long benefit from those moments in time. It's kind of the same in all sports. In the NFL, for example, you see players moved around from team to team. Coaches get fired and then hired elsewhere. Once you're in the system, you're pretty much plugged in for life....barring some kind of major criminal activity or something.

Poorly worded, and "attractive" was about Heynckes... wanted to know whether you think Brendan Rodgers, who isn't a legend of the game, would have found a way to get United to the CL ?

I don't see what's wrong with Martinez. Clearly he has some of the abilities that you mention: capable of handling egos, plays attractive pass-y football, etc. Unlike Heynckes he already knows the PL.
They could do far worse. I'm not a Utd supporter, so I guess I don't care, in the end.

Martinez could be a decent manager of United but I think there's are at least half dozen better candidates out there. I'm not so certain he would be able to handle the egos in old trafford, he's never managed prima donna "superstars" as there aren't really any of those types at Everton.

In any case there's absolutely no chance that board will hire an Everton manager with no previous experience either as player or manager at the highest level.

    Hey guys....sorry to ask again but i have come up with a third option per my post above;

    Mannone,

    Ivan, Baines, Bertrand, Ward, Chambers
    Mata, Nasri, Eriksen, Mutch, Punch
    Aguero, Suarez, Lukaku

    Bank 2.0

    a) Baines/Lukaku > Demi/Rooney - 4 Hit (C) Rooney
    b) Ivan/Punch > Demi/Ramsey - 4 Hit (C) Aguero
    c) Baines/Lukaku/Punch>Rooney/Ramsey/Alonzo (or other
