Spot the Differential – Gameweek 36

As always on a Saturday morning, we scour the market for some overlooked options as the minutes tick down on another Gameweek’s deadline. All of our trio have left it late in the season but are finally starting to fulfil expectations and play a key part in their respective sides’ fortunes.

Lukas Podolski

In his first start of the season back in Gameweek 2, the Arsenal forward was quick off the mark and grabbed a two-goal haul and maximum bonus points in a 3-1 win over Fulham. Podolski’s campaign was immediately brought to an abrupt halt with a hamstring injury sustained against Fenerbahce in late August, however, and he failed to feature again until mid-December – climbing off the bench to bag a goal and assist against West Ham.

Having flitted in and out of the Gunners’ first XI over the subsequent few months, he finally seems to have nailed down a regular role, and with a security of starts boosting his match sharpness, the German international has finally flourished. Five goals and two assists in the last five Gameweeks, with a brace in each of his last two appearances, is indicative of Podolski’s current form – despite a role on the left of the attacking midfield three, he has still racked up the returns and looks a key figure in Arsenal’s push for a fourth-place finish.

Available for 7.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 8.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team, he now welcomes Newcastle and West Brom to the Emirates, and with a final day trip to Norwich also on the Gunners’ agenda, Podolski looks poised to continue his fine recent showings.

Marko Arnautovic

A somewhat enigmatic figure, the Austrian struggled to adjust to his new surrounds after arriving at Stoke last summer. With the Potters in a period of transition under new manager Mark Hughes, Arnautovic managed just a goal and two assists in his first five months in the English top-flight and showed little of the talents that persuaded the likes of Inter to shell out for his services in seasons gone by.

As Hughes’ tactics finally clicked, Arnautovic stepped up and has since become a crucial member of a side that has tasted defeat just twice in the last 12 matches and has comfortably secured their survival for yet another season. With two goals, three assists and five bonus points in his last six, the Austrian is now up to eight assists for the season and, as we witnessed in last week’s draw at Cardiff, is also now on spot-kick duties for the Staffordshire outfit.

Available for just 5.1 in FPL, 4.9 in the Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, Arnautovic now welcomes Spurs and Fulham to the Britannia – where Stoke have already beaten the likes of United, Chelsea and Arsenal – whilst a trip to neighbours West Brom on the final day of the season affords further reason for optimism, bearing in mind the Baggies have conceded three times in each of their last three at the Hawthorns.

Fabio Borini

Just two Gameweeks ago, Sunderland seemed dead and buried, but thanks to a couple of gritty away displays, Gus Poyet’s great escape looks very much on the cards. A draw at City was followed by an incredible victory at Chelsea, where Borini grabbed a vital spot-kick winner as the Black Cats moved to within three points of safety.

Whilst Connor Wickham may have been a little more prolific over the past fortnight, the Italian’s underlying statistics have been far more impressive and suggest he could be the cannier acquisition for those eyeing up the Wearsiders for the run-in.

Poyet’s side have three home games still to play and, crucially, all are against relegation rivals. Cardiff, West Brom and Swansea have yet to make their way to the Stadium of Light, and with a double Gameweek 37 trip to Old Trafford also thrown in, Sunderland’s recent exploits suggest they have the momentum on side to secure their survival. If the Wearsiders are to retain their palce in the Premier League for another season, Borini – priced at 6.2 in FPL, 7.5 in the Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team – will surely have a part to play.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

              Nah, have Nasri instead.
I'd have to drop Evra to Evans for that, which isn't the best sideways transfer.

Cahill is bugging me. I don't expect anything from him so is it worth a hit to get a Man U def? I only have Rooney atm so would likely take a hit next week anyway to get three for the dgw. If so which one? Budget not a problem.

I could also play Chester at Fulham instead of Cahill

Torn over this also, if you are going to do it it's obviously got to be Evra. A cleanie from Utd today and the hit has paid for itself, plus attacking threat from Evra, plus the double. Of course Utd could concede a bucketful, Evra could go off injured early and Cahill could get a goal. Aaaargh!

Evs, an opinion about the Yaya situation? Do you expect him to start and if so, what could it be his return, realistically speaking? The scout article really intrigued me, Paul not only assumes Pelle will risk another Silva disaster and get him in from the start, but considers him a good pick in what is practically one of his most difficult matchups of the season (see their difficulties away against STO, NOR, SUN etc). At first i was expecting his rival for a place in my team to outscore him by at least 10 points this round, but i'm starting to chicken out and, as everybody around me will have him, i would like to hear some strong arguments for the guy. The only one i could find is that in the absence of Silva he will be more advanced. Help, please?

Aside from him being a very good player a fantasy scoring machine who will start and has an upcoming dgw I think pressure is off City now that they have blown it and they will score 2 or 3
Who is his rival. I may buy him if he can outscore him by at least 10.
I don't have Yaya by the way. i'm only getting him next week as I unfortunately had done my trading before knew he was fit

Thoughts on Cahill to Evra for a hit?

    Pro's:
    - Its an almost certainty that Chelsea concede, particularly now Cech and Terry are out and facing the most potent strike force in the league.
    - More attacking threat from Evra
    - DGW coming up for Utd

    Cons:
    - It's a hit for a defender
    - Unsure how Utd will come out since Moyes was sacked

    Any idea chaps?

I'm looking at the same. The hit for a defender bit is irrelevant, especially with a dgw. The tricky bit is which def to get. Will Evra even play all 3 games?

Hard to say whether he'll get all 3, not sure the extent to his injury but he's a pretty robust player so if he's fit then no reason not to play all 3.

It depends on your bench option. If you ha e a decent enough sub to play instead, I'd wait until next week. If you have no confidence at all in your Cahill replacement then do it I'd say!

I took a hit to get Kosc. I rarely do hits and certainly not for defenders, but didn't want to play Azpi vs Liverpool.

Manchester teams are too poor / unpredictable so a great defender in a stable, reinvigorated Arsenal team with great fixtures made sense to me.

Evra seems the most nailed one to me. I think Giggsy will roll out a familiar back four - X, Ferdinand, Vidic and Evra - although the right back could be set for any one of Jones and Smalling with Rafael still sidelined.

Jeez i can get my head around a possible -8 this week...it could allow me a saved trannie next week though....

      Is Rooney + Ramsey+ a 4.4m DGW def worth a -8 is terry/punch/luk are the ones out?

Rooney and Ramsey in for a hit, yes - but I'm not entirely sure an additional transfer for a DGW 4.4m defender is worth an additional hit. Saw your team, I think you can start Chester. That's what I'm doing. Can't see any other good hits.

It is a high risk but a risk worth doing it. If you are losing 1-2 in a game and the game is nearing an end, you might as well sacrifice a defender and put an extra attacker into the field and hope that change will win you the game.

Team good to go? Subs in order etc?
Thinking if I play Sterling instead of Nasri I feel more confident not having Suarez as captain, and will captain Rooney..benching Ivanovic for Vlaar also..

    Mannone
    Baines Vlaar Coleman
    Gerrard Eriksen Sterling Ramsey
    Agüero Rooney Suárez

    Subs: Boruc Nasri Ivanovic Mariappa

Thanks and good luck this weekend!

The only real way of doing this is to note ahead what your rivals Team Value is, look at how many transfers he makes, and work out the most likely new boys from player prices

That is what I have been doing. We can see what transfers were made over the course of the season, but to judge what the ongoing transfers for the gameweek are, one can always judge through it by looking at their team value and the reserves in bank - before and after - and that will give you an indication of what kind and range (in terms of price) of player he has transferred in.

The problem is, people positioned above and below you may not have the same thinking - and that puts yourself at risk, and I think a risk worth doing especially at this time of the season. That will depend on your logical thinking when it comes to deciding who to bring in for a hit.
