The Digest – Gameweek 36

Our final look back at Gameweek 36 salutes Sunderland’s new-found saviour, as the Black Cats finally climb out of the bottom three. We also acknowledge Ryan Giggs’ immediate impact at the United helm ahead of the double Gameweek, and as many Fantasy managers look to chase down mini-league leads, we also assess the need for differentials over the run-in:

THE PLAYER

The subject of ‘The Team’ section in last week’s Digest, Sunderland duly delivered a 4-0 home victory against relegation rivals Cardiff, with Connor Wickham serving up a brace, an assist and three bonus points in the Wearsiders’ biggest win of the season.

On loan at Leeds United in the Championship only a month ago, the resurgent Wickham has now scored five Premier League goals in just three games, which have helped lift the Black Cats out of the bottom three, with a game in hand on the teams below them. Gus Poyet’s in-form outfit can now enjoy a double Gameweek 37, where they first visit Manchester United before hosting West Bromwich Albion, another side battling for survival, at the Stadium of Light.

Neither game will hold any fear for Sunderland, bearing in mind they have already having tasted victory at Old Trafford earlier this season in the Capital One Cup semi-final, whilst a further home fixture, against the now-safe Swansea City, brings the season to a close. Having earned 37 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in his last trio of appearances, Wickham’s outstanding form, allied with a bargain price of just 4.6 has already persuaded over 22,000 Fantasy managers to take the plunge – the bandwagon looks set to build at pace, with his endeavours up front looking increasingly likely to fire Sunderland to safety and provide the miracle his manager called for earlier in the month.

THE TEAM

Manchester United’s stuttering form under David Moyes has been a cause of real frustration to Fantasy managers all season. Renowned for their swashbuckling displays and never-say-die attitude during Sir Alex Ferguson’s lengthy tenure, the champions struggled for any semblance of consistency or self-belief this time round and finally called time on Moyes’ misery by bringing his brief reign to an end this time last week.

Interim manager Ryan Giggs predictably went for experience over youth in his first team selection, and with the focus on attack, United duly served up their most emphatic home win of the campaign. A 4-0 drubbing of relegation-threatened Norwich City strengthens our faith in the Red Devils’ main assets ahead of the upcoming double Gameweek, where Giggs’ side play host to Sunderland and Hull City in back-to-back home fixtures. Indeed, of the six sides set to feature twice in the upcoming round of fixtures, United are the only one to play at home on both occasions.

The clamour for Wayne Rooney’s signature has intensified after his 13-point haul at the weekend, whilst Juan Mata has also earned himself a bandwagon ahead of the weekend. Only Yaya Toure has been acquired by more Fantasy managers than either player after they both bagged braces against the Canaries – Mata’s cameo off the bench against Neil Adams’ side has certainly strengthened his claim for a return to the starting line-up against Sunderland at the expense of Danny Welbeck.

At the back, there’d be no real surprise if Giggs continues with the experience of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra – the weekend win was, after all, United’s first home clean sheet since January. Phil Jones seems to be in the driving seat for the right-back berth, though the return to fitness of Rafael may threaten his security of starts, and whilst David De Gea looks nailed on, many will be happy with Sunderland’s Vito Mannone as their chosen stopper for the run-in. United may have nothing more than pride left to play for at this stage, but as Saturday’s emphatic showing suggests, that may be more than enough to persuade Fantasy managers to jump on board as Giggs attempts to arrest their dramatic fall from favour.

THE TALKING POINT

The prospect of a double Gameweek so close to the end of the season presents the ideal opportunity for Fantasy managers to serve up triple-figure hauls and climb up the rankings. A combination of player form and fixtures suggest that we may see a final peak in the template this week and perhaps offers alternatives to those looking to chase down mini-league deficits.

In terms of coverage for the double, most actively managed Fantasy sides will be likely to have Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney, Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero and Vito Mannone as part of their starting XI – Wickham aside, this represents both the form players and teams with two games next week. The most popular captaincy choices are also likely to be from amongst this pool, leading to very similar returns and an ‘as you were’ outcome to our mini-leagues. Add to this the likely event that many will also be holding players like Luis Suarez and a Chelsea defender for the final Gameweek, and it becomes very difficult for significant ground to be made up –unless we are willing to gamble.

Whilst those at the top of their mini-leagues will be more inclined to play it safe, for those still in pursuit, this is now the time for taking risks and bucking the trend. Wickham’s recent displays highlight this very fact – only now has he moved to 1% ownership – while West Brom’s Morgan Amalfitano, at just 4.3, has now scored or assisted in four of his last five and is owned by only 2%. Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko offer alternative in-form options for title-chasing City, Antonio Valencia turned in an impressive display on the United right flank on Saturday evening, whilst Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long were both in the goals last week for Hull. Indeed, we only need to look back to double Gameweek 34, where Palace’s Jason Puncheon outscored the premium-priced players with a 23-point return, as evidence of the fact that going against the grain could well provide the pay-off many desperately need.

Out of interest, who thought RVP wasn't essential at all this season as soon as FPL opened? Who thought he wasn't, then changed their mind after the Swansea game? Who thought he was, then quickly realised he wasn't? Who hates the word essential?

I was all over the shop with him.....one minute in, the next out. Ruined the start to my season.

Started without, brought in with WC in GW3 or 4.....missed all his point. Then he got injured.

I thought he wasn't, soiled myself a little after the Swansea game but stuck to my guns.

Just good luck really. If it weren't for injuries and the Moyes effect, he would have totally justified his cost this season, which was my main objection. I'll pay whatever the asking price is for Suarez this season.

On your second point, would he though? Wouldn't he need to be captain able every game to justify it. Also, i guess if Aguero stayed fit, it would make RVP's price even worse. Lots of factors, like you say though.

        Agree on Suarez.

I guess the existence of another reliable captain option diminishes the appeal. And perhaps if more big mids had stepped up this year, you could argue that they would have been more deserving of the funds.

I think the point I'm making (to myself, mainly) is that in principle, a player can be worth a very high asking price, which is what I initially doubted.

main reason he got the essential tag seemed to be for reliable captain, even though last season he got a tonne of 5s and 6s and actually very few big scores. for me that's not a good captain, that's reliable but hardly damaging to rivals

When I saw his price tag, it was quite obvious he would have to score top points in each and every match to justify it, so I didn't expect him to be an FPL essential or actually even a useful player given that his price tag meant you needed to downgrade other positions.

I didn't think he was "essential" at the start of the season, just seemed to pricey with Suarez having shown last season he had the stuff needed to wear the armband on a regular basis. Of course I didn't predict Suarez exploding like he did and RVP struggling with injuries. Didn't touch RVP until the Jan WC, in hindsight I shouldn't have touched him at all 😀

14m is a reasonable price for rvp becos every1 is expecting a repeat of last season which is being the top scorer. But it turns out not to be and the rise of suarez proves vital to y ppl not getting rvp. Next season he maybe arnd 12m imo which i think is a competitive price which provides a cheap alternative to suarez.

I started the season without him, intending to get him in once MUN's fixtures picked up. Having said that, I fully expected United to be a more conservative outfit under Moyes (though not as bad as they turned out to be). The main reason I didn't get him wasn't because of the price, but because I didn't expect him to match his previous returns.

I wouldn't look at only GW37, there is GW38 also to take into consideration. That game has Suarez running riot written all over it. You could spend that FT and cash you would be spending getting him back in GW38 on something completely different.

I think so too but hard times are what breed success, truly earned success. United can go two routes, they can become a team that tries to buy the league like certain competitors or they can go back to the drawing board and start again. This time they at least have more financial power behind them so restructuring won't be as painful but I would like a lot of areas to be considered.

As for gaining spirit, I agree it does take time but as we've seen this season, very few of the players currently have any spirit unless they're getting a pay rise/getting their own way.

They say no player is bigger than the club, I agree with this but I certainly believe there is more than just that. No player is bigger than the manager, the only big ego I want to see is the manager, the players have to kneel to him. That was the problem with Moyes, he was a decent and kind man who was pitted against some utterly massive egos. He never really got a foothold. Van Gaal... I've never seen a player bigger than Van Gaal, if he is he doesn't last long. A thorough readjustment of attitudes at this club, including the board, is required.

Hard times ahead but I cannot say I'm not excited either.

Well expressed. The problem that you have, is that:

            a) Your Financial Power is a chimera - your owners have seen to that
            b) You can't go back to the drawing board. The unpleasant and hasty defenestration of Moyes has put paid to that - you have already chosen "buying" the League.
            c) You have given Rooney and Nani huge and long contracts - will Van Gaal deal with that?

              Well if I may

              a) Would surprise you a bit. The Glaziers siphon money from the club, there is no question of this but even recent negotiations such as cutting interest payments by about £10 million a year and, surprising too, continually growing profits. The money of course is required for debts but United has cleared a large amount of those debts already, relationships with creditors are improving because the payment is reliable. Money is still going to be an issue of course but financially United still have more power than they did.

              b) I honestly think the issue with Moyes was he was a nice guy. I do believe he was mistaken in sacking the backroom staff but aside from that it was attitude and ego. The Glaziers, at the end of it all, are businessmen. The sacking of Moyes was a shambles but why do you think Van Gaal is being sought after now? They wouldn't go after a man with Van Gaal's reputation and expect him to bend to suit anyone, if they wanted to continue as they are they'd give Giggsy the job. That's my take but certainly I could be wrong.

              c) Now, this is the stuff I want to see fixed. I would be astounded if one or even both of these players are allowed stay on those contracts under Van Gaal. I think he could sell. Rooney took advantage of a desperate Moyes, something I'll never ever forgive him for. He knew Moyes was desperate and upped the ante, I would like to see both gone and if Van Gaal can't do it, nobody will.

Let me promise you one thing that I know. It wasn't Moyse who agreed that contract.

Just look over his lifetime with Everton. You will get the idea.

I agree with you, the shadow of Fergie looms large.

Moyes didn't agree the contract, not at all but Rooney took advantage of seeing the club in disarray because he is and always has been a mercenary. This pushed the boundary and I fully believe Ferguson got involved.

It's funny, if I'm not mistaken, before Fergie there was a similar problem at United with former successful managers being appointed to the board and then controlling the club. You'd think they'd learn the lesson.

They've had big egos all along, part of what makes them good players. How managers handle it though is different, though I'd say both under AVB and Moyes the players should take most of the blame for things going that sour.

          yeah, that's true.

What I don't understand is that they are willing to go to such lengths to undermine the coach, that in the end they undermine the whole club (Everton - ManU game as an example).

Selling a fit rested player with 5 in 3 games for an out of form tired striker with 1 in 3 is lunacy ?

If Benteke was fit and 10m with no form everyone would get him for DGW.

It's Wickham's price that's putting people offside his form can't be.

Lazy to take a hit n a transfer to buy back suarez. Simply not worth it. Not to mention wickham would not be my captain. So assume suarez 6pts against palace + the cost of 2 transfers u would need wickham to score at least 14pts to be justified. N most ppl would reinvest the cash which means even hardee to get suarez back.

Yeah, makes sense. I'm conflicted because in one league people below me have Mata, in the other, they have Yaya. Money riding on both...

Half-tempted to 8-point it and get both, but that involves selling Suarez and Ramsey, which sounds completely bonkers.

Sensible or not, would love to own both atm! Just as you...would've been a -8 for Mata been as well for me and I decided to hope Giggs pulls off some post-campaign rotation stunts...including Mata.

I couldn't decide so did a -8 for both but didn't have to sell Suarez. Did Baines, Gerrard and Lallana > Jones, Yaya and Mata. Think I would prefer Yaya but ML rival has Mata and only 12 behind me.

Azpilicueta -> Demichelis for a hit.
    That's too risky, right?

    Reasons to stick:
    - Chelsea at the bridge could easily get a cleanie.
    - It's not that likely for Demi to score more than a cleanie + 4.

    Reasons to twist:
    - I depend too much on the Chelsea CS, as i have Cahill as well.
    - Demi has a home game in GW38

Let the record show, I am chasing 24 points in my ML.
My rival will have no Chelsea and probably no City def.

Yeah you reckon Gerrard is the one to go? Rival has him so could be risky but it's either Ramsey or him to go I reckon. Not sold on RVP, waaay too expensive for me and has had a dodgy season. Borini a very interesting shout though!

Cech being injured was his own fault. Trying to slam dunk the bar for some reason.

        1. Evra
        2. Vidic
        3. Jones
        4. Ferdinand (would be 2 if I was confident he would play both games)

      A. Play RVP, Alonso (-8)
      B. Play Rooney, Baines/Chester (-4)
      C. Play Suarez, Baines/Chester

      Thanks! 🙂
