The Community Round Up

With the campaign drawing to a close, members of the Fantasy Football Scout community were preparing to roll out the red carpet and dish out end-of-season awards. We revisit the week’s discussions to call in on the names earning the plaudits, whilst also harking back to topics which assessed the merits of daring to be different and next season’s potential backline bargains. Elsewhere, we warm up for the World Cup by recalling a discussion that focused on a rather unique international clash. Finally, in our regular summary of the community competitions, we drop in on a new tournament that’s been testing our crystal ball gazing skills to their limit.

The Hottest Topics

Last weekend’s announcement of the PFA’s team of the year proved the catalyst for a glut of posts to honour your top players from the season. Our hot topic proved one of the most popular this week and, while your own selection shared several similarities with the PFA’s choice, some also reserved accolades for unsung heroes who had helped shape their Fantasy season. Granville was quick to point out the value provided by Emmanuel Adebayor during his purple patch, while Sunderland’s Vito Mannone was the undisputed keeper of choice, with the likes of Moin and Walrus Eggs among those dishing out the praise.

Robareid was also inspired to quiz the community for end of season favourites, this time focusing on most enjoyable players to own. Christian Eriksen was his choice, with the likes of Yaya Toure, Seamus Coleman and even Bryan Oviedo earning a mention amongst the discussion that ensued. It was a topic that was revisited only this weekend, with Kingston’s request for a roll call on the season’s FPL Heroes and Villains.

It wasn’t just players earning recognition in this week. Accounting on Chris decided to turn the subject of awards back onto the community itself, asking you for nominations for your favourite posters from the season, providing another of the week’s most popular threads.

Giggs Boson earned a mention in that particular topic and he was duly on hand to continue the retrospective theme, as he cast an eye back over the top Gameweek FPL point scorers. His post certainly highlighted the value in searching out differentials, as the discussion recalled the impact of André Schürrle’s Gameweek 28 tally and Gameweek 34’s surprise success story that was Jason Puncheon.

Looking forward, Andy1’s recent hot topic immediately assessed the assets on offer from relegated Fulham and Cardiff to ask which of their squad are likely to remain on our player list next season. Earlier in the week, we also prompted you to kick-off your plans by requesting your tips on the potential value defenders and goalkeepers on offer in the 2014/15 campaign. With the Everton, Crystal Palace and Chelsea rearguard all set for a hike in price, JimLad reckons that Newcastle could become a great alternative source of cheap defensive points. Meanwhile, Dufflinks had other ideas, pointing out that, without Europa League distractions, Swansea defenders are likely to perform better next season and could prove attractive investments.

Finally, The Sarjeant helped to ease us into World Cup mode by recalling one of the strangest international matches that has ever taken place, where Barbados and Grenada in 1994 took own goals to a new level of ridiculousness. Be sure to check out the chatter and the footage in his thread.

The Community Tournaments

The Sarjeant makes another appearance in this week’s round-up, this time as creator and host of the Punters Predictions competition for a contest that challenges entrants from the community to accumulate points for correct score and result predictions. Skogen89 led the way this week, with Ryan Giggs One More Year running in second.

Meanwhile, over in the Puffinboy Memorial Cup, a tournament dedicated to one of Fantasy Football Scout’s very first posters, DonTheSpecialOne looks to have secured glory: he goes into Gameweek 38 with an impressive 37 point lead.

What are the chances of Rooney playing midweek?

Even a 5 minute appearance would do me

I fondly remember some poster coming on here and predicting that RVP would demolish Crystal Palace in their home game early season.
That if we didn't have him, our season would be over.
        It didn't end sadly.

5m euros for nani is a steal for juve.. the guy hasnt been on form for a while but its worth a shot, if he can get inspired again he'll bring great value for that price. sometimes a player can get in a rut, i think nani still has lots of good things to come.

This season has been a disaster for some on the site, including myself.

Seeing how the bonus system has changed, how do you plan on changing your style of play for next season to ensure you don't have another nightmare season?

Whether it be less hits, different team balance (more premium defenders- CBs especially), or just chasing bandwagons.

    Thoughts/ opinions?

Yet there are 3 from 5 FBs in the top 5 scoring defenders?
FPL may increase the prices on CBs if this bonus system is to stay aswell?

What is interesting - of the top 12 scoring defenders 11 are from top 5 teams - so its definitely worth trying to get in 1 or 2 into the squads next season not just fill up with mid table players.

I feel like I have had a poor season yet I am somehow just about in the top 1k (maybe not for long!). Not sure what I will do differently.

Despite central defenders getting more bonus I seem to have had quite a few full backs as well like Coleman, Azpi and Ward.

Maybe go for two solid CBS like Kosc and Cahill.

CBs from good defensive teams, FBs from bad ones.

A lot of other considerations to be made as well. If Everton do adapt to 3 at the back and 2 wing backs Coleman or Baines will be huge.

I think, barring the odd super star, my team will only be players with PL experience (excluding the cheapies of course)

It's more weighing the risks. CBs from poor teams obviously are less likely to get the CS while FBs are probably more likely to get attacking returns.

I phrased it badly though, what I meant was that any defence I'm certain are strong I'll get CBs from, any defence I'm not sure of I'll get FBs from.

      Top 20k = disaster? Whoa.

I always seem to be quite a slow starter so I think my big change will be jumping on those bandwagons during the early part of the season and not being stubborn. Overall though, leaving transfers to Friday/Saturday has worked well. CBs definitely. I started off the season under the old mentality of attacking full-backs.

I have only myself to blame for the terrible season, not the BPS or price thresholds, so besides my stubborn reluctance to get the obvious points scorers the biggest mistake I made was my misuse of the January WC. Instead of pruning I chopped down trees because I assumed a Wild Card was a mandatory existential moment. I got rid of some strong performers in search of a new squad.

I think full backs in weaker teams could be good. Seeing far more 3 CB and wingback formations. For the defensive premium teams CBs will remain FPL gold. Terry, mert etc have proved to be worth the extra cash.

chase fewer bandwagons and stick with reliable picks.

as an example i remember seeing Mark's team early in the season with players like arnautovic, eriksen, moses, gayle, ben arfa. these are all gambles imo - they can come good but they're all unknown risks. while its ok to punt on a couple (some new players can come good, like Michu the year before), but when you load your team up full of punts then it can start to go bad very fast.

Been a terrible season on my part as well. Not blaming the bonus point system though. Have just had a lot of really bad player choices I feel. Putting way too much trust in United-players. Drafting in a player like Lamela and keeping him on for way too long. Not jumping on the Ramsey and Yaya bandwagons early on.

Still a bit unsure on what to do differently next season though. Having been in the US this year at least I'll be able to watch more games next season, seems to help, numbers don't always tell the whole story (ie. Yaya).

depends why you're writing off full backs. zabaleta and ivanovic for example are bad for bonus due to fouls. there are extremes though, always been pretty dirty and reckless. there are plenty of full backs who don't foul so much and plenty of centre backs who do foul lots

What changes have been made in Bps? 1st season, so cant compare the system
I am planning to go cheap in defence with 1 premium defender in 1st half of season and getting more premium defenders in 2nd half, will try to bring defenders with more bonus pts potential rather than attacking, pts for goals scored by defenders is less in FPL as compared to Espn, I would rather pay 6m-7m for midfielders than for defenders(except Baines)
In 1st half of season, I was in good position bcoz I used to play my own way, but in 2nd half, I started following the crowd which resulted in some major falls/fails, will try to follow my own feelings next season

Compared with previous seasons, defenders and goal-scorers got more bonus points and midfield assist merchants get less. Midfielders got fewer assists than previously, because the assist rule changed too.

The effect was that, especially at the start of the season, 4-3-3 and 5-2-3 formations became good alternatives to the standard 3-4-3, and better than last season's popular 3-5-2.

I sold Yaya and Sturridge at terrible times in the season just because i though they cant continuous and their fixtures weren't up to it. BIG mistake, always go with form!

Don't rest on last seasons laurels/perceptions of players and teams.

I missed out on Ramsey's start of season form and Toure all season (got him for the first time ever this week), largely because I was sitting there thinking "they can't keep this up..!" "ramsey is awful!!!" "toure is a defensive midfielder!!" until it was almost too late.

Make more early transfers to build team value early/mid season. I played more cautiously than previous seasons by waiting to bring in risers at the end of the week and my team value lagged behind rivals for 3/4 of the season.

Hope that Suarez goes off the boil a bit next season so there is some captaincy variation!!

Is luck the real key to it this year ?

I usually struggle to get in the top 100k but this year I am doing very well.

      Why ?

1 Coleman since GW1 (partly bcos he is Irish - and I never sold him)
2 Pre season games were a big help this year (had Giroud from gw1)
3 Suarez bought week he came back (but just pure luck - could have easily been studge)
4 Yaya & Ramsey both bought before their value got totally out of hand (had to get city coverage when Aguero got injured)
5 Short term punts almost all coming off and then getting rid in time - eg AJ, Brunt,
6 Dumping players at the right time AJ,

      but most importantly .....

      7 Becoming a FFS member 🙂

Stick to a 1-2-2-2 formation - a keeper you can rely on, 2 big team CBs (eg Cahill & Mert), 2 big hitters in midfield (eg Hazard and Walcott), 2 big forwards.

Get the ones you evidently need to quickly in the season - early WC or hits - then only gamble around them. One defender, 2 mids, 1 forward. No more gambles than that.

This season has not been a disaster for me, just a little bit frustrating that I still haven't quite made it into the top 1k.

Next season I will probably do a couple of things differently:
      1. Follow the Silva Surfers example and be less resistant to taking the right kind of hits.
      2. Place less reliance on the RMT tool, and don't worry too much if it doesn't agree with my plans.

Apart from that, my biggest missed opportunity was not getting Luis Suarez in immediately he had completed his ban, but that circumstance is unlikely to present itself again next season.

And try to remain flexible. Don't complain if the bonus system or something else changes and old systems don't work as well as they used to - just adapt to the new situation.

Good evening all .... been away since the debacle on Saturday.

Like most other ppl I am hit with major injuries ...

Rooney, Aguero, Ramsey, Chester, and doubts over Yaya (seems to be ok now)

What is the consensus about what to do with the likes of Roon & Aguero in particular ?

There are several of us in the same boat - we have all these (inc Azpi). I've compounded my own problems by having Chambers and Noone. It's bad enough for this week, but the lack of definite news for several of these for the last game will be even worse.

subconscious check list on full backs.

    1) inferior or equal assist/goal threat to the centre backs inside?
    2) more of a card magnet to the centre backs inside?
    3) the centre backs inside usually get to 30 passes at a high accuracy percentage?
    4) team don't keep a decent amount of clean sheets?

if even one of those is a yes i'd avoid
