End of Season Awards – The Goalkeepers

As promised, the first End of Season poll is rolled out this afternoon as the Fantasy Football Scout awards get underway. To begin with, we focus on the goalkeepers, where the poll will be available on the middle column of the home page. Bear in mind that the vote is from an overall Fantasy perspective – overall points, price, performances and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) value should all come into consideration here:

Our five options have all merited their place in the list below. The league’s tightest defence, the number one keeper in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings, the best value stopper and the two most impressive in terms of points per game are all included. Next term, we’ll be hoping that the likes of Adrian can step up, having replaced Jussi Jaaskelainen as West Ham’s number one midway through the season, whilst Joe Hart and Allan McGregor will be hoping to put the form and fitness issues that have blighted their respective campaigns firmly behind them in 2014/15. For now, though, here’s our main contenders:

Wojciech Szczesny
The Arsenal stopper sits at the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) keeper rankings as we edge towards the final round of fixtures. Szczesny started the season priced at 5.5 after accumulating 102 points in 2012/13 but has comfortably surpassed that tally already – a current total of 157 points is joint-top with Per Mertesacker in the Gunners’ rearguard and superior to all but Olivier Giroud amongst Arsene Wenger’s charges.

The Pole is also joint-top with Chelsea’s Petr Cech in the race for the Golden Gloves award, with 16 shut-outs apiece and, whilst the latter is a real doubt for the weekend trip to Cardiff, Szczesny – one of only four stoppers to have played every minute of the season so far – could well be set for another shut-out away to Norwich.

Petr Cech
Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge has re-established the Chelsea defence as the meanest around. Initially, the Blues struggled to deliver defence returns, though – only four times in the first 16 matches did they manage to register a shut-out, conceding 11 goals in the space of just six fixtures between Gameweeks 10-15.

A change in approach from Gameweek 17 onwards has reaped reward, with Mourinho’s men keeping out their opponents 14 times in the last 22 games. A shoulder injury has deprived Cech of the chance to earn a pair of recent shut-outs against Liverpool and Norwich but, as mentioned above, no other keeper has registered more than his 16 clean sheets – for those looking to double up on the Chelsea backline, he’s been a reliable option week in, week out, with an average of 4.3 ppg only just less than Branislav Ivanovic amongst Jose’s backline regulars.

Vito Mannone
Sunderland’s summer signing from Arsenal warmed the Black Cats’ bench for the first ten Gameweeks before an injury to Kieran Westwood allowed the Italian to replace the stricken Irishman midway through an early-November trip to Hull.

In his first full start for the Wearsiders, Mannone set the tone for what was to follow by delivering a clean sheet in a 1-0 home win over Man City – his side’s first of the season. With 10 shut-outs to his name, the Italian’s heroics between the posts have been key to Sunderland’s survival – his total of 127 saves is second only to Cardiff’s David Marshall (144), despite failing to feature for the first few months. With six sets of 10+ hauls, 16 bonus points and an average of 4.6 ppg – higher than any regular stopper – Mannone has been an outstanding servant to the Wearsiders and Fantasy managers alike.

Artur Boruc
Priced at just 4.5 in the FPL, the Southampton stopper arrived quickly onto our radars after conceding a mere three goals in the opening nine league matches. Boruc’s contribution to the Saints has been vital under Mauricio Pochettino – they have managed just one clean sheet in the nine matches he has missed through injury, compared to 14 shut-outs in 28 games with the former Glasgow Celtic stopper between the posts.

Indeed, whilst Boruc’s reduced game time (due to hand and back problems) means Jose Fonte has outscored him amongst the St Mary’s defensive options by 147 points to 122, his average of 4.4 ppg is superior to the centre-back’s 4.2 and is bettered only by Mannone’s 4.6 amongst keepers.

Julian Speroni
The Argentine sits in fourth spot in the FPL keeper standings, with 144 points picked up thus far – just two less than Chelsea’s Petr Cech. After the first 10 Gameweeks of the season, though, Speroni – and, for that matter, the Palace defence, were far from Fantasy radars after shipping 21 goals in that run, without a single shut-out to his name.

Ian Holloway’s departure and the subsequent installation of Tony Pulis at the Selhurst Park helm was the catalyst for a stunning turnaround in fortunes, though. Speroni has proceeded to deliver 12 clean sheets in his last 27 appearances and, having started the campaign at a price of 4.5, has proven to be the best value keeper in the league, scoring 25 points more than any Palace defender ahead of next week’s trip to relegated Fulham.

It's a pity that Coutinho wasn't picked at all. I'm sure he'll be included in the next tournament.

You're kidding right? Hulk doesn't even play as a brazilian, he plays as a european and he can't do half of what Cou does. Coutinho should have been in the starting 11 next to Neymar and Oscàr. Felipao has just been embarrassing with the choices. Bernard doesn't even play in Shakhtar and he's been complaining the whole season. Jo has never been a reliable player. Maicon doesn't make any sense.

          Jo is very good internationally.

Coutinho blows hot and cold repeatedly, if they could guarantee his form then he'd be in no doubt. But ahead of him are Lucas Moura, Filipe Luis, even Kaka. If Coutinho was to be in the team, all of them should be. As for Bernard, 25 appearances for Shakhtar since he joined. Maicon has done pretty decently with Roma this season too.

I'm not saying they're all the right choices but I'm much more surprised Luis or Moura aren't going.

Moura is a big surprise. Even in the Confeds he didn't get much game time, actually even at PSG its the same. Not sure why he doesn't get played often as anytime I've seen him he looks great, the only one negative thing I've noticed is he doesn't really have an end-product and sometimes it looks like he is running around like a headless chicken...

He plays fair minutes for PSG, in fact. Bit of a myth that he doesn't get fielded there.

It is true though that during spring he became a sort of luxury sub for them.

I think his biggest weakness is exactly what you allude to. He isn't a headless chicken but he's very selfish and as such gets himself into positions where he then can't get rid of the ball and subsequently looks headless! That's his biggest flaw, very gifted but perhaps they don't want too many selfish players spoiling chances.

Coutinho just isn't a top drawer player yet.. plays some nice passes and all that but generally only plays well once every few games. Not ideal for a tournament like the World Cup and definitely not a great impact player from the bench.

    Kolarov

If you had a defender who you knew would only play around 50% of the games you'd stay well away, yet with Kolarov this is actually a positive.

because under Mancini he played about 20% and they were really unpredictable. Plus he was more prone to 1 point cameos this season. All in all Pellegrini has been positive for Kolarov in FPL terms

Had a discussion with a friend about this yesterday.
100 million for Suarez would be a decent deal.
He'll be 28 in January and surely only has 2 years left playing at his current level of brilliance.
100 million + 60 million of 'pool funds to be spent by Rodgers is a delightful prospect. Imagine 5 players wort 20+ million brought into that squad.
I don't think it would be the end of the world for him to leave, despite his brilliance.
Don't make a ''Spurs'' point... Baldini / Rodgers is no comparison.

But Lloris has more points than Manonne and Boruc... anyway these 5 goalies have been the most owned by managers this season but not necessarily the ones who have the highest points

was Lloris better value than any of the keepers listed?

Well Lloris could save many shots in one game but still concede 2 or 3 goals because he is not helped by his defense. Manonne is only 9 points behind Lloris in the standings so of course Hugo is not better value

Not really, Mannone is running away with the goalkeeper award and he's 9th in overall GK points. Value and key performances will play a big part in these awards.

Right, the notion of value is very important in this case, it is true that Manonne performed well for his price.

This is purely from an FPL point of view, regardless of real life performances. Lloris is a very good goalkeeper but I don't think anyone wishes they'd owned him in FPL this season!

I don't understand your point, Lloris has more points than Manonne and Boruc in the FPL standings so he was still a better option FPL wise this year.

Without even doing the math I would be confident the rotation would out score him. Also, since sherwood has taken over, he has been a fpl no go zone. This coming from a Lloris owner this season.

No doubt a cracking keeper, but fpl wise, been better options over the season. De Gea has had a decent season, can't put him in just because he is a good keeper

Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar (Toronto FC, on loan from QPR), Jefferson (Botafogo), Victor (Atletico Mineiro)

Defenders: Dani Alves (Barcelona), Maicon (Roma), David Luiz (Chelsea), Thiago Silva (PSG), Dante (Bayern Munich), Marcelo (Real Madrid), Henrique (Napoli), Maxwell (PSG).

Midfield: Oscar (Chelsea), Fernandinho (Man City), Willian (Chelsea), Paulinho (Spurs), Ramires (Chelsea), Luis Gustavo (Wolfsburg), Hernanes (Inter Milan).

Attackers: Bernard (Shakhtar Donetsk), Neymar (Barcelona), Fred (Fluminense), Hulk (Zenit St Petersburg), Jo (Atletico Mineiro).

If you've not seen it. They have a keeper who hasn't played all season, a solid defence, too many defensive mids and a few non entities (Willian, Hulk, Maicon)

I thought Brazil would win before seeing this... Back to Spain now
