PlayON Player Picks – £1,000 GUARANTEED GAME – FREE ENTRY FOR ALL NEW SIGN-UPS

For the final time this season, we turn our attentions to PlayON, the weekly Fantasy Football game. Avoiding those clubs where rest and rotation seems most likely looks the key to success this week – Man City and Liverpool will be looking to turn on the style in their final home fixtures, with the Reds clinging to the hope that West Ham can upset the odds and win at the Etihad to hand them the title:

Tottenham also have something to play for – Tim Sherwood’s side need a draw to clinch Europa League qualification. Unsurprisingly, then, those three teams are the focal point of this week’s PlayON picks.

This week PlayON has a £1,000 GUARANTEED POT on offer – you can enter the game on the multiplayer page here. PlayON is also giving away FREE ENTRY into the £1,000 GUARANTEED game for all new sign-ups between now and 13.00 on Sunday afternoon – no deposit needed.

PlayON’s new desktop and mobile sites for World Cup 2014 are three weeks away from going live – more details on them over the next few weeks.

If you’re new to PlayON, it is weekly Fantasy Football so you can dip in and out of playing throughout the season. Once your starting XI is built, you can compete for cash. You can challenge other players to one-on-one games, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and OptaJoe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged for free or for £1. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to be challenged and has a 51% win rate up to this point. You can also create an open challenge against anyone else on the site – just click the amount you want to play for and the number of slots (number of people who can accept your challenge) on the one-on-one page .

For a more in-depth introduction to PlayON, take a look at this season’s introduction article.

Goalkeeper – Joe Hart
The Man City number one comes in at 8.9m for a home clash against West Ham. In all likelihood, Manuel Pellegrini’s side need just a point to clinch the Premier League crown and look odds-on to prevail – Hart has two clean sheets in his last three matches, and with West Ham scoring just twice in their last trio of league fixtures, a home shut-out seems a likely outcome. Simon Mignolet sets you back a mere 7.0m for the Anfield clash with Newcastle. Granted, the Reds haven’t been the most resilient in recent matches, but bearing in mind the Magpies have failed to score in any of their last four road trips, a clean sheet could well be on the cards for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris is available for 8.7m and welcomes an Aston Villa side that have scored once in their last three away games.

Defender – Martin Skrtel
Priced at 9.6m, Skrtel is comfortably the most expensive option amongst Liverpool’s backline. As we’ve already seen on seven occasions this season, however, the Slovakian’s eye for goal has made him the most reliable defender for the Merseyside outfit and his aerial threat in the Newcastle box could be key once again as the Reds look to finish the season strongly. Tottenham’s Michael Dawson comes in at just 8.4m, and with Younes Kaboul suspended for the visit of Aston Villa, is sure to retain his start. Looking elsewhere, Chelsea’s Gary Cahill is priced at 9.6m for the Blues’ trip to relegated Cardiff. One of Jose Mourinho’s new batch of “Untouchables”, the centre-half will be hoping to help his side to a nineteenth clean sheet of the season.

Midfielder – Christian Eriksen
Available for 10.1m in the PlayON Player Price List, the Tottenham playmaker looks a canny acquisition this weekend. Eriksen has played a part in eight of his side’s 11 goals over the last trio of home fixtures – netting three times and providing five assists – and with visitors Aston Villa conceding four times in three of their last four on the road, the White Hart Lane outfit could be poised for a prosperous finale. David Silva comes in at a reasonable 9.3m for Man City’s game with West Ham and is likely to tuck in behind a lone striker once again if Sergio Aguero is ruled out, whilst Jordan Henderson is set to return to the Liverpool XI after serving a three-match suspension and, priced at 6.8m, could prove great value.

Forward – Daniel Sturridge
The Liverpool forward returned to the starting XI for Monday’s draw at Crystal Palace and was immediately back amongst the goals. Available for just 10.5m, Sturridge looks a sure starter at a time when a number of big-name strikers are either injury or rotation doubts, and with the Reds desperate to give their fans something to cheer about after their Selhurst Park capitulation all but ended their title hopes, the England international looks great value this Sunday. Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor is also easy on the budget at 10.8m for their favourable home encounter with Villa, whilst Edin Dzeko seems the safest bet as a route into Manchester City’ frontline. The Bosnian doesn’t come cheap at 12.2m, but he’s more than justified that valuation, having notched five times in his last three appearances to take the Etihad club to the brink of the league crown.

guys wanted to give a more beefy answer to some of the questions i didn't answer so well on the scoutcast. this isn't one of those this is how you should play the game if you want to succeed, it's simply a few things i do, they may be shared, they may be unique, they may even be things that you think hold me back, but i think a few of them could at least be interesting or generate further discussion. if not, don't read, simple as that. and yep i'm fully aware this doesn't hold as much weight as someone in the top 10 saying it.

first of all it took me 8 gameweeks to break into the top 1 million so if you have a crap start hang in there, don't do anything stupid like a rage 20 point hit or even quit! it's a long season. also i wouldn't completely abandon your existing gameplan, don't suddenly give up on everything that has been good to you in the past. look where you can make tweaks or what might have changed but swapping all your thoughts for those of the managers who have had a good start means they have the extra points without the threat of a different set of players to quickly catch up and pass them.

    the form v fixtures debate
i'm a believer that fixtures generate form. think form is essentially another word for bandwagon so if you get it right with a form player you're up with the pack as tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands buy the form players. if however you get it right with a fixtures player you get ahead of the pack, you predict the form, you get in before it, you beat the bandwagons, you start a bandwagon even. the trade-off is probably that it's harder to get it right with a fixtures player, especially this season where it seems there have been an almost relentless stream of bandwagons paying off. to summarise, while i definitely don't ignore form, i give fixtures at least as much importance.

getting on the big players early
linked in with above i got most of the big scorers based on fixtures, so got suarez straight away, ditched hazard after gw1 then got him back for cardiff at home, a maybe fortunate 18 pointer. was quick on sturridge too. was very slow on ramsey, think i may have only got a couple of his goals. yaya toure i've only had for 3gw this season, all around christmas. of those matches he was rested for one, scored in the second and blanked in the third, so i've only had 1 of his 20 goals.

    exploiting stigmas
mentioned spending a lot in defence in the scoutcast. i think 343 has become so ingrained in our thinking over the years that it really is a stigma to spend a lot in defence. this is one thing i've tried to, and i feel succeeded in exploiting this season. not just spending a lot but then the tactical aspect of getting the right >5mil defenders. mainly the centre backs with good pass percentages, with exceptions like bursts of baines and kolarov. coleman would be an exception but he was 5.0mil! too cheap to worry about where he plays, and luckily he got so many goals his relative lack of bonus was never an issue. having this pool of 4 big defenders, sometimes even 5, i still play 343 a lot, but it just means when i do so i'm not hoping for clean sheets from my starting 3, i'm expecting them, the only thing i'm hoping for is the bonus to then come with it, and attacking points if you're lucky.
another stigma is that on players. classic one lately is demichelis. not that i think he's a weak player but you don't have to be a world beater to be a good fpl option, especially within a defence where you're effectively sharing points. without sounding all moneyball i think there will always be players undervalued and kept under the radar by fairly natural stigmas (and yeah i realise it wasn't clear demichelis was nailed for quite a long way into the season).
a final stigma is form related i guess. i think we can be a little hysterical on here at times. you can be almost essential one week then almost a joke of an option a month later. there are always opportunities to exploit the previously proven players being written off. take mata as an example, still the same player who was great in fpl last season, and chelsea were never title challengers with him so not too far off current man utd standard. it was right to be sceptical over him but once he got that position change against west ham i think you have to trust proven talent. my cheeky tactic lately is to raise the idea of a player here to see the mood surrounding that player, then if it's bad rather than get defensive or try to argue the case for them sneak off and that's your opportunity. that's your differential. not a differential for the sake of a differential, but a previously proven player (so one with obvious talent and pedigree) who you believe is good but now just happens to be a differential.

    saving transfers
the silva surfers famously has not been shy of hits this season and mark lately has regretted not spalshing out more with transfers earlier in the season. i've been pretty damn tight with hits, went about 20gw without taking one at one point. a lot of this was not necessarily tactical or trying to be tight it was down to saving transfers well in other ways meaning what may have been a 4 point hit was the free transfer. this was helped by having a squad, i purposely don't want to say bench options as i don't consider any of them bench players, if they are then i think you need a better player in their place (can still be very cheap, puncheon mutch etc). happy to play any 11 in the squad, which means when those annoying 2-3 week injuries come along if it's one of my best scorers that i know i'll want straight back i've just benched them where in past seasons i would have sold a lot. each time this saves 2 transfers, and not just that, it means you're first back on that big player when they return. a good example lately is koscielny who got injured a popular player and came back a couple of weeks later as a differential. the probable luck element of this is lots of my injuries to these good scorers have been in defence to the likes of terry, koscielny and coleman. having lots of big defenders means carrying one of them on the bench for a couple weeks didn't make the starting defence look ropey, it often just meant a switch to the standard 343. regarding coleman keeping was nothing to do with having to spend a lot more to buy him back.

    do go back!
you see "he's burnt me before" type comments a lot. i'd say never be worried about past failures with players, it may have just been the wrong time, a bit of bad luck, or if it was a red card or own goal a relatively freak thing. if it seems a good option now then do it regardless of what they did before for you.
    *vegetarians skip a sentence now*
i treat players like slabs of differently priced meat now, no emotional attatchment, don't care if i don't like them outside of fpl or how they've done for me in the past, they're just bits of meat with different potentials.
i treat players like slabs of differently priced quorn now, no emotional attatchment, don't care if i don't like them outside of fpl or how they've done for me in the past, they're just bits of tofu with different potentials.

    team value
i said on the scoutcast i don't care about team value at all. this was a poorly worded response, or at least i didn't expand on it enough (was over-conscious of talking over others, so that was why answers were in often strange short bursts). the point i was trying to make was i dont let price changes affect WHO i am buying at all, but i do let them affect WHEN i buy. once i establish a player i want i will get them very early in the week if it means getitng them 0.1 or 0.2mil cheaper. it's a risk but maybe like a thief who says they're still a thief because they've never been caught i do early transfers because i never get caught out. it's something crazy like 3 seasons now since i last got burnt, been lucky there.

linking that now being influenced by price changes point with everything as a whole really, i think playing your way is not only more rewarding and fun but can be more successful. the majority view is not always the best view, as much as more numbers can come to a better conclusion i think the majority can also hold a snowballed view which isn't necessarily beneficial. obviously be on the look out for new ideas all the time, just don't feel pressured by weight of numbers, or weight of price rises. i do appreciate that can be a tactic too however, for example buying a player you're not too sure of but knowing even if they don't score you will at least bank an extra few 0.1mils.

for those waiting to listen apologise in advance for a michael owen rivallingly dull voice. any hint of a remotely interesting accent i had got ironed out living in another country for 9 years. the result being the most nothing neutral and tbh dull accent in the world. luckily the other 4 on there are repping for #accents, expecially Evs, magnificent.

Like your exploiting stigmas point. I agree with you.about formations and definitely regarding players being.overlooked.

I think Stokes players especially.mf and fronting have been a good example.of that at times tgis season. Demichellis.is a classic example. Kompany and Zableta are the fashionable choices, but demis ppg has been fantastic.

Really good post mate and some great suggestions.

I would like to add to what you said if I may.

      1. I think it is important to be flexible and be willing to change your existing strategy if it is not working.
      2. I think it is important to start building your tea value as early as possible. Obviously don't just get someone because they will make you 0.1M this week if they have got hard fixtures coming up or you want rid of them really quick.
      3. To add to your point about investing in your defence, I think this is a good strategy especially at the beginning of the season where we don't have a lot of funds. The reason I say this is defenders generally have the best points per million per game (i.e. value for money)
      4. On Scoutcast last night I seen some of the guys refused to get Ramsey or Yaya all season or got them when it was too late. In response to this I think it is important to let the stats guide your decisions because you increase your chance of success.

1 yeah i think you have to be open to change, just not sure about full overhauls, more tweaking if that makes sense.
2 is definitely one that could be and has been discussed tonnes. think we'd be lying if we said there wasn't at least one point in the season where we weren't 0.1mil short of a transfer we wanted to make.
interesting point on 3. glad you didn't say more clean sheets early on as that's one thing i suspect is a myth.
the irony on 4 is i think some of the people most sceptical on yaya are those who look at the stats. i dont really look at stats yet was still very sceptical too.

There are actually more CSs for the 'lesser' teams early in the season, with few towards the end of the season (Crystal Pulis excepted). The bigger teams generally tighten up towards the end of season (e.g. Chelsea this season).

if that's hull based i fear that may be fixture driven too. hull seemed to have almost all of their best home fixtures at the start of the season

          1. When you look at evolution it shows us that you adapt or become extinct, this maxim applies to FF as well. 😉

          3. You are correct when you say it is a myth, as there are actually more CS at the end of a season than the beginning.

          4. The only stat I care about is points (obviously calculate other stats from this like PPM, PPMPG, PPG, etc) and use performance indicators to determine whether a player is worth purchasing or if its time to sell. I have an in an out list to which I apply recent fixtures and upcoming fixtures to work out who is best to leave and who is best to come in. Over the course of a season it gets more right calls than wrong ones.

just to add i didn't not get yaya due to stubborness. that would be breaking the bit of meats thing. stubbornness would be accepting that he's a great option and still not buying him. as hard as it may be to believe i have just never thought of him as a great option so that's why i ignored. his points have obviously been more than a great option, fpl is always trying to predict the future though and i just couldn't see him keeping it up the whole time. more recently he's not just kept it up but stepped up, so my opinion has changed on him.
had i known back in say november that aguero will have missed all the games he has since then yeah, i would have had yaya more, and for longer. it's just been frustrating that aguero has been so in and out so much rather than out long term

I'm 6 points behind in one mini-league, and 15 behind in another.... The one I'm 6 behind in I'm most interested in, as it's a league of 75 with a prize!

Assuming I unload Rooney to get Sturridge back, our main differences will be his Bony/Gerrard to my AJ/Sturridge. Given I will then have 5.0m in the bank burning a hole, would you advise a 4 pointer to get Gerrard for AJ?

I'm loathe to spend the points, but weeks of DGW AJ ownership has yielded very little!
