Moving Target

Moving Target – Rickie Lambert

Liverpool kicked off their summer shopping spree earlier last month with the acquisition of Rickie Lambert from Southampton. Arriving at Anfield for a rumoured £4m, the 32-year-old was clearly delighted to return to a club that previously released him as a youth player:

“I can’t believe it. I’ve loved this club all my life. I left here 17 years ago – and I haven’t stopped loving it since. I have always dreamt of playing for Liverpool, but I did kind of think the chance of playing for them had gone. It wasn’t a chance I was expecting to get but I’ve been given it now and I want to get out there that I believe I am good enough and that I will perform and that I will help Liverpool. And as much as it’s a whirlwind that is happening for me at the minute with the way my career has gone, I want to make it clear that I feel I deserve to be here and what I’ve done deserves me to be here right now”.

The History

Raised in the Kirkby district of Liverpool, Lambert was a youth player at Anfield between 1992 and 1997 before he was allowed to leave. Subsequently plying his trade in the lower leagues for Blackpool, Macclesfield, Stockport, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers, he notched 105 times in 337 appearances, with 29 strikes in 45 matches for the latter in 2008-09 persuading Southampton to snap up his services in the summer of 2009.

Lambert’s contribution was key to earning the Saints’ back-to-back promotions as they climbed into the Premier League within three seasons of his arrival. Over 90 League One appearances for the St Mary’s side, he delivered 51 goals and 26 assists, before serving up 27 goals and 18 assists in just 42 Championship appearances in 2011/12.

Question marks were raised over his ability to produce at the highest level but Lambert answered them emphatically. In his first season in the English top-flight, he produced 15 goals and seven assists and followed that up with 13 goals and 11 assists in 2013/14 – indeed, he was one of only four players (Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez were two of the other three) to produce double figures for goals and assists in the Premier League season gone by.

At international level, Lambert was a late developer and wasn’t handed his first cap until last year – nonetheless, he has still flourished in front of goal, finding the net on three occasions from six appearances.

The Prospects

Since arriving in the Premier League with Southampton, Lambert has played in all but one of the subsequent 76 fixtures, with just nine of his appearances coming courtesy of the bench. A security of starts – boosted by a lack of European competition – and spot-kick duties ensured he was one of the most reliable mid-price forwards around, with 187 points and 179 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game over that period, but the move to Merseyside looks likely to place major question marks over his game time.

Luis Suarez’ summer move to Barcelona has seen Brendan Rodgers splash the cash in order to cope with the Uruguayan’s departure. The arrival of Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic clearly illustrates the Reds’ determination to strengthen in the final third, and while the club ultimately abandoned their pursuit of Loic Remy, it’s clear that Rodgers is keen to bring further options on board.

Frustratingly, Rodgers’ summer of restructuring leaves us with more questions than answers as to his likely formation and starting XI right now. The former Southampton striker could offer an option as the lone forward in a 4-3-3 or as part of a front two – certainly, his height and strength are viewed by many as affording Liverpool a “Plan B”; something that was tellingly lacking in the Gameweek 36 home defeat by Chelsea that proved devastating to their title tilt.

To label Lambert as a target man is doing him a great disservice, however. His touch and vision and ability to play in a more withdrawn central role could even allow him to be fielded at the tip of the midfield diamond behind a front two. This is more unlikely, with Rodgers perhaps inclined to look for the pace and trickery of dribblers like Raheem Sterling or Philippe Coutinho, but could come to fruition if the Merseysiders require an extra physical presence through the middle.

Dampening his appeal further is the fact that, in spite of a superb record from the spot which has seen him miss only twice over his entire career, Lambert confirmed in an interview with the club’s official website that he “won’t be trying” to take spot kicks off Steven Gerrard. A real boost for the skipper’s Fantasy fortunes, bearing in mind that 10 of his 13 goals arrived from the spot in 2013/14, though Suarez’ departure perhaps dents the Reds’ prospects of penalty awards for the season ahead.

As the Reds attempt to recover from Suarez’ departure, Daniel Sturridge seems the safest option for those starting the campaign with a Liverpool forward in place, then. In the long-term, though, Lambert’s arrival may allow Rodgers to be a little more careful with the former’s game time as the Reds make a return to European duties. Sturridge’s propensity for picking up injuries meant he only started 26 league matches for the Reds last time around and, with Suarez now out of the picture, extra cover will be crucial.

Looking at the fixtures, Liverpool’s prospects bode well for a strong start as they attempt to replicate the free-scoring form of 2013/14. Rodgers’ side face just one of last season’s top four in the first nine matches – a trip to City in Gameweek 2 – with home clashes against Southampton, Villa, Everton, West Brom and Hull, supplemented by trips to Spurs, West Ham and QPR, looking promising for a side that found the net 101 times last term.

While such a schedule suggests that the Merseysiders could be back amongst the goals again, whether the same applies to Lambert is another matter entirely. For now, Fantasy managers look set to steer clear and hope that Rodgers’ teamsheets offer us some indication as to where his intentions lie in the first season of the post-Suarez era.

    Taking shape methinks

    Speroni Green

Debuchy Davies Wisdom Vlaar (assuming Soton) Ward

    Mata Siggy Hazard Sanchez Albrighton

    Dzeko Rooney Remy

Will all go to crap when Cesar returns from Toronto for QPR but until then, happy enough. Might consider Hazard -> Fab but not sure on that point.

I believe the words "walk in the park" come to mind 😉

Expect him to be nailed at QPR, if he moves it will most likely be to Spurs where he will also be nailed on. Hard to ignore, Pelle another option if I want but getting a little concerned about how much time Soton will have to gel.

Looks like a good team to start the season with.
Only thing I would change is the lack or a Chelsea or United defender. With those fixtures 1 is a must. Not sure I fancy many Arsenal clean sheets, with Mertesacker not likely to start the season.

If Wisdom nails down RB he's the best 4m option.

Remy a good option if he stays at QPR - 3 good home fixtures in the first 5

I think LVG sees a 19-year-old on £100,000 a week, and doesn't want him to get too big for his boots, get him working hard early on.

If he was really worried, I reckon he'd keep it to himself.

It is indeed the very same dilemma. I have been punished one too many times by City strikers I think. Dzeko's position should be under major threat considering Jov was injured for so much of last season. 1 more top game from Jov and he can't be ignored.

I like the Toure pick, I think people forget just how many goals City were scoring last year.
I've gone for Silva in my initial line up but I definitely have a plan to get toure in pretty quickly if he starts well.
I'm not convinced by Costa yet but don't know much about him, I'm going to Stamford Bridge in a couple of weeks so I'll do some scouting!

I braved reading the rest and if i'm honest it's one of the poorest RMT's i've seen on here. I think you can do alot better.

Guzan each week is not good enough at all.

Pieters - Stoke don't keep that many clean sheets under Hughes.

Ramsey & Sanchez - Maybe only one of these is needed especially considering that Arsenal haven't exactly got a dream start fixture wise.

Defence in general is far too cheap and you don't even have 3 premium strikers to account for it.

I understand this is a 3-5-2 but I would downgrade one of Sanchez to say Eriksen/Sterling and upgrade your keepers and defence.

I like Stokes defence in a rotation tbh so I won't change that but if I put that new mid I suggested in I could get someone more nailed on from WBA?

TBH i'm not sold on those changes either as you really need a striker such as Jelavic/Long or better unless you plan to play 3-5-2 in which case Albrighton isn't good enough to be played each week IMO.

On the wing mainly. Think he has a fair bit of competition yeah, but not to say he's not higher up in the pecking order. Agree with AB, think he's more likely to start in a 4-4-2. They have 2 other wingers, and may yet buy more. He looks like the best 4.5 option as he's the most attacking, but it's just about how much game time he's gonna get

              Central midfielder I think.

30 appearances in the Championship for Leicester, 4 goals 2 assists. 7 Goals and 4 assists the season before.

Doesn't play every single game, but could be a decent punt with a low ownership. Albrighton's is pretty darn high.

    hazard . sanchez . lamela . siggy . poyet
    rooney . austin . dzeko

pretty happy with my front 3 and midfield, my only concern at the moment is my defence and a lack of a top defender..

will chelsea keep clean sheets early on in the season..? and if so, who to get, luis or cahill (leaning towards cahill currently)
shaw is apparently unfit and still unproven for lvg and united, is he worth the punt?
city have poor fixtures to start off the season, demichelis looks a good shout from gw6 onwards.
arsenal have mixed fixtures.. will debuchy be all he's cracked upto be or stick with what we know and get kos?

I think you need a mixture of player values in there, there's bound to be a couple of £5m defenders who outperform in their price bracket but having 5 is overkill when you only get to play 3.
I think you should spread the value something like this...

      5.5, 4
      6.5, 5.5, 5, 4.5, 4

My first RMT for this season - waited to see how some of the transfers went on, would be wasting too much time on it otherwise!!

    Feedback please!!

    Mannone
    Terry Cahill Vermaelen Debuchy
    Mirallas Hazard Mata
    Bojan van Persie Dzeko

    Krul
    Sigurdsson
    Albrighton
    Wisdom

Wisdom to come in if Vermaelen doesn't play or isn't already a United player by then.

Any weaknesses? Staying away from Baines for first 7 weeks - will get him in after Utd game, don't hinestly see his price rising at all with those opening 7 games including ARS CHE mun liv.

Initially went with Rooney and not Bojan, but that meant I couldn't double on Chelsea defence and had a 4.5 mid not Mirallas who scores pretty well for his price.

If you want good defence take 3 premium max. Get Ben Davies in place of Terry, saves you 1.5 and still leaves you with 4 defenders in top 5 teams. Then I would do rvp to Rooney and dzeko to costa. The 1. 5 you can use to either turn mirrallas to eriksen, or upgrade bojan a bit. That's what I'd try to do.

Mannone mightnt start so i would wait and see who starts. Bojan has been poor for last few years. I think tadic is a better option than mirallas especially with everton fixtures. Too much on defense for my liking.

Ok cheers for your views - just saw defenders racking up the points last season, and don't see any reason for change - Terry, Coleman and Baines were all in the OVERALL top ten, and cost only between 6 and 7 mil - just thought if I can get 3 top defenders in who play every game, I can leave them pointing while I play around a bit more up top. This Bojan is a major punt I do admit, and the goalkeeper situation i'll wait until gameweek anyway. Cheers!

OK.. first stab. 100m never seems enough, right?

Without wanting to be totally template - where are the howlers in this lot, if you don't mind..?

    De Gea - Given

    Rio - Davies - Flanagan - Ward - Evans

    Sanchez - Fabregas - Siggy - Erikssen - Albrighton

Adebayor - Dzeko - Diego Costa

    Defence a bit rubbish right?

          He can still play.

Malaria causes episodic illness. There is no cure.

This means that he will miss a lot of games.
