Moving Target

Moving Target – Patrick Van Aanholt

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet finally ended the search for a new left-back last week by snapping up Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea. The 23-year-old arrives at the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract and is the Black Cats’ fourth signing of the summer, following Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones and Costel Pantilimon to the club:

After completing his move to Wearside, the Dutchman revealed he rejected other suitors in order to stay in the English top-flight and was quick to talk up his attacking intentions for the season ahead:

“I had a couple of offers from different countries but the Barclays Premier League is where I want to be, I want to show everybody what kind of player I am and what I am capable of doing. I am a left-back who likes to go forward and I like to take people on. I will also try to get some assists but I will do my defending first because that is where my role starts, it is all about helping the team and I think I will do a good job.”

The History

After progressing through the Den Bosch and PSV Eindhoven youth systems over a period of four years, Van Aanholt was snapped up by Chelsea as a 17-year-old back in 2007. Despite a seven-year stay at Stamford Bridge, the Dutchman played just eight times for the Chelsea first-team (delivering a goal and assist) and was mainly farmed out on loan by the London club after failing to displace Ashley Cole in the starting XI.

Spells at Coventry (20 appearances, one assist), Newcastle (seven league outings), Leicester (12 games, one goal and one assist) and Wigan (four appearances) between 2009 and 2012 afforded Van Aanholt little opportunity to establish himself as a regular, though.

A temporary move to Vitesse Arnhem in January 2012 finally helped him settle down and, over the course of two-and-a-half seasons on loan at the Dutch club, he finally found his form. After serving up two goals and five assists in 46 appearances in his first 18 months, Van Aanholt’s attacking forays came to fruition last season, where he produced five goals and five assists in 38 matches over all competitions.

At international level, the raiding left-back has represented Holland at youth level on 26 occasions, scoring once, whilst he’s also turned out a couple of times for the senior side.

The Prospects

With the versatile Phil Bardsley and on-loan Marcos Alonso both departing the club over the summer, Van Aanholt looks set to be handed a regular role at left-back for the Black Cats in the season ahead.

Yet to be listed in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, a price of 4.5 seems likely, whilst a cost of just 4.4 in the Sky Sports game makes Van Aanholt one of the cheapest first-choice defenders around.

Analysing his stats from last term, the Dutchman’s attacking displays bode well – a total of 52 shots over 29 appearances equates to 1.8 attempts per game, whilst in terms of creativity, he averaged one key pass per league match. Bearing in mind that Alonso registered 1.6 shots and created 1.1 chances per match during his loan stint, the Dutchman looks a like-for-like replacement for the Fiorentina man.

In terms of defensive prospects, Poyet’s arrival clearly made a significant difference to Sunderland’s resilience. After conceding in every match under Paolo di Canio, the Wearsiders managed 11 shut-outs in the remaining 31 league fixtures (six at home and five on their travels) and, with their backline options so kindly priced, many Fantasy managers are eyeing up the Black Cats ahead of a schedule which pits them against West Brom, QPR, Burnley, Swansea and Stoke in the opening seven Gameweeks.

With an average of 4.9 points per game under Poyet, though, it’s difficult to look beyond Vito Mannone as the best value route amongst Sunderland’s defensive options. The Italian’s heroics between the posts have already earned him over 13% ownership in FPL – the sixth most popular keeper – though if Poyet decides to alternate Mannone with Pantilimon as his number one as the season unfolds, Fantasy faith in Van Aanholt may take a turn for the better.

SKY game people! Which do you prefer: scores from last year in brackets.

    A) Shaw (132) + Debuchy (130 Sagnas points for better guide) + Sidwell (138) = Total 400

    or

    B) Van Aanholt (Sunderlands best def got 73)+ Tripper (guestimate of 65) + Hazard (209) = Total 347

Shaw to score more or less this season?
    Debuchy to match Sagna?
Sidwell to score as well at Stoke?
Van Aanholt and Tripper estimates accurate do you think?
    Hazard to better his score?

    Thanks

Tadic has vanished from most RMT's now. I'm guessing the exodus has a lot to do with that.

I'm feeling a big differential on the cards for those of us with the balls to stick

(or perhaps a switch to De Jong a few GWs down the line 🙂 )

Anyone got any idea on QPR midfield. Seems like one of them could be a bargain at 5.0. Thinking Barton cos of set pieces or Hoilett? Thanks

I saw a good few free kicks charged regardless in the WC.. Referees put down the spray and assume that's the end of it.. they stop watching.
Not much of an issue in the game anyway.. I'd rather cameras were introduced for any situation in which the referee decides to issue a red card. More important things.

He might do. At Southampton he played there some games (I think) and it was rumoured he may play there in the future.

The criticism of Lamela that existed last season still holds. He is physically not cut out for the PL. A few crunching tackles, and he may just become invisible.
Tremendous talent, and he may score some goals. He might grow stronger, too, so the potential is there. But to see aĺl this bandwagon-jumping after one good preseson game is nothing short of ridculous.

So it comes down to this (already have Rooney & Dzeko):

    A - Hazard / Sanchez / Austin (or another 6m)
    B - Fabregas / Ramsey / Giroud
    C - Hazard / Ramsey / Remy (or other 7.5)
    D - Fabregas / Sanchez / Remy (or other 7.5)

I'm currently on A but think I'm leaning towards D... what do you think?

It's safer to go with 'coverage' at the start teams form can and will effect individuals, it's better to double up only when you can see a team is doing well, has tasty fixtures and that by getting two players you're maximising points. In the case of Chelsea your talking about a team that doesn't score all that much so doubling up isn't recommended until proven otherwise. The season hasn't started yet and as such you can't properly judge the form of a team, or it's players.

Chelsea were the 3rd highest scoring club last year... So that's not an argument.

Chelsea also have a great run of fixtures to start the year with Bur, Lei, Swa & Avl as well.

Players being on the same team has little to do with how they'll score fantasy wise.

Mata & Hazard, Walcott & Cazorla, RVP & Rooney, Yaya & Silva & Nasri etc...

Its pretty clear *Double Coverage* isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I'm taking a shot on him and rooney as a 2 man strike froce (5 man mid)... With the plan to upgrade to sturridge once liverpool fixtures pick up. Worth a punt as that chelsea midfield should provide shit-tonnes of balls fed to him (SHOULD... haha). Just think of all those chances torres just spunked away, with somebody who can actually finish on the end of them instead 😉

This is a classic example of someone trying to convince everyone that the basis for their picks is correct. It is not true. Aguero is first choice, that is obvious. He will sometimes play alone, sometimes with jov, whether jov is up to with him or elsewhere. To claim dzeko is now first choice because he's 8.5 so he's in your team is false.

Finishing 12th would normally be considered a very good season for Saints.

Finishing in the Premier League with £100m in the bank would equate to them winning the champions league.

I really think they just need to stay in the PL, get s few decent youngsters through and build something for the next 10 years with that money.

It isn't luck, or rather lack there of, it's an apparent lack of ambition being shown by the club, for example; Lallana was willing to stay at Saints for as long as the club had ambitions to push on and possibly break into Europe, instead Cortese was dismissed due to free spending to boost to club (this was after Liebherr's death) and many players and the manager followed suit because Liebherr's children wanted the club to be run like a business, they wanted to remove debt and stabilise it. Unfortunately that means ambition is lost and as a result players wanted to leave. Personally I don't blame him.

Defence needs some work, if the £4ms don't play you could end up with two defenders each week and no increase, possibly a decrease in all three player's values which will affect you later in the season. If you want to keep that front line I think you need to spread the cash a bit more in defence and give up on a Chelsea defender.
Only other thing you can do is downgrade Sanchez or Hazard for some extra cash.

Scholes is adamant he would like nothing better than for the 22-year-old to prove him wrong.
He told Drivetime: “I always seem to upset people whenever I say anything. I don’t mean to, honestly!
“I played against Jack at 17 and thought what a player we’ve got here. And I don’t feel he’s gone to the next level yet. But you have to remember he’s had horrendous injury problems with his ankle and I’m sure the best is still to come from Jack. I hope so anyway because he’s an English midfield player and I want him to do well.
“And he’s playing for a good team at Arsenal as well. I think they could have a good season, especially if Aaron Ramsey stays fit, and they’ve made a great signing in Alexis Sanchez. So hopefully this is the year when Jack really comes of age.”
