Moving Target

Moving Target – Patrick Van Aanholt

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet finally ended the search for a new left-back last week by snapping up Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea. The 23-year-old arrives at the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract and is the Black Cats’ fourth signing of the summer, following Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones and Costel Pantilimon to the club:

After completing his move to Wearside, the Dutchman revealed he rejected other suitors in order to stay in the English top-flight and was quick to talk up his attacking intentions for the season ahead:

“I had a couple of offers from different countries but the Barclays Premier League is where I want to be, I want to show everybody what kind of player I am and what I am capable of doing. I am a left-back who likes to go forward and I like to take people on. I will also try to get some assists but I will do my defending first because that is where my role starts, it is all about helping the team and I think I will do a good job.”

The History

After progressing through the Den Bosch and PSV Eindhoven youth systems over a period of four years, Van Aanholt was snapped up by Chelsea as a 17-year-old back in 2007. Despite a seven-year stay at Stamford Bridge, the Dutchman played just eight times for the Chelsea first-team (delivering a goal and assist) and was mainly farmed out on loan by the London club after failing to displace Ashley Cole in the starting XI.

Spells at Coventry (20 appearances, one assist), Newcastle (seven league outings), Leicester (12 games, one goal and one assist) and Wigan (four appearances) between 2009 and 2012 afforded Van Aanholt little opportunity to establish himself as a regular, though.

A temporary move to Vitesse Arnhem in January 2012 finally helped him settle down and, over the course of two-and-a-half seasons on loan at the Dutch club, he finally found his form. After serving up two goals and five assists in 46 appearances in his first 18 months, Van Aanholt’s attacking forays came to fruition last season, where he produced five goals and five assists in 38 matches over all competitions.

At international level, the raiding left-back has represented Holland at youth level on 26 occasions, scoring once, whilst he’s also turned out a couple of times for the senior side.

The Prospects

With the versatile Phil Bardsley and on-loan Marcos Alonso both departing the club over the summer, Van Aanholt looks set to be handed a regular role at left-back for the Black Cats in the season ahead.

Yet to be listed in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, a price of 4.5 seems likely, whilst a cost of just 4.4 in the Sky Sports game makes Van Aanholt one of the cheapest first-choice defenders around.

Analysing his stats from last term, the Dutchman’s attacking displays bode well – a total of 52 shots over 29 appearances equates to 1.8 attempts per game, whilst in terms of creativity, he averaged one key pass per league match. Bearing in mind that Alonso registered 1.6 shots and created 1.1 chances per match during his loan stint, the Dutchman looks a like-for-like replacement for the Fiorentina man.

In terms of defensive prospects, Poyet’s arrival clearly made a significant difference to Sunderland’s resilience. After conceding in every match under Paolo di Canio, the Wearsiders managed 11 shut-outs in the remaining 31 league fixtures (six at home and five on their travels) and, with their backline options so kindly priced, many Fantasy managers are eyeing up the Black Cats ahead of a schedule which pits them against West Brom, QPR, Burnley, Swansea and Stoke in the opening seven Gameweeks.

With an average of 4.9 points per game under Poyet, though, it’s difficult to look beyond Vito Mannone as the best value route amongst Sunderland’s defensive options. The Italian’s heroics between the posts have already earned him over 13% ownership in FPL – the sixth most popular keeper – though if Poyet decides to alternate Mannone with Pantilimon as his number one as the season unfolds, Fantasy faith in Van Aanholt may take a turn for the better.

Has anyone been able to get the RMT tool to do the calculations for the Mike it does during the season? Whenever I enter 15 players it does not add them up and give me a weekly total.

Am I missing a step or does it not calculate until I have an official week 1 squad?

      Same issues here...

Best thing to do is eneter 15 *random* players to fill out your squad.
(You won't receive a weekly score)

Then, *transfer* in the actual squad you intended to have & it'll recognise you've made changes & spit out a score for you.

Now, tinker away as each subsequent set of transfers you enter will produce a score.

I have several of those players so I think it is very sensible.

One I don't have but like is the Silva pick -- now is the time to get him since he does well until he is injured. When that happens you can easily swap him for half a dozen other premium options. Interesting.

Was looking for a way to upgrade Eriksen to Cesc or Hazard but now I've seen his stats I'm not sure I want to.

I've compared Eriksen and Hazard :

Hazard played 35 games, 2890 minutes, total of 202 points, which is 5,77 points a game, 6.29 per 90 minutes.

Eriksen played 25 games, 1976 minutes, total of 132 points, which is 5,28 points a game, 6.01 per 90 minutes.

Am I missing something here or is Eriksen really better value for money ?

Potentially, for sure. I'm just not totally sure what to make of Spurs. How will they play under Pochettino? What will Eriksen's role be? Hazard seems safer to me, I can't really imagine a scenario where he doesn't tear it up.

      Thems good stats for sure.

I guess the question mark over his consistency (he seems to score in bursts) plus the threat of being rotated with Lamela is the only problem with Eriksson.

I don't think they'll be rotated, I think they'll play in the same team. However, I do think there's a genuine risk of Lamela, rather than Eriksen, being the main man in behind the striker.

RMT please! had quite a few shuffles with my team since it re-opened but I always question everything leading to quite a few changes and plan on having a solid unchangable team by the 10th unless a player gets a knock or something that would force a change. If that does happen however, I'd rather dip into the bench of it isn't serious of course

    DDG (Myhill)
Debuchy, Cameron, O'Shea (Ward, Vlaar).. Ward-->O'Shea after GW1 and rotate Vlaar and Cameron
    Hazard, Tadic, Siggy, Sanchez (Albrighton)
    Remy, Rooney, Giroud
    1.5 in the bank

Dzeko-->Giroud after GW1 as my transfer unless he puts in an unbelievable performance
Leaving money in bank if people like Tadic or Remy does not work out and I need to upgrade. Also handy for players with fluctuated prices if they play well in GW1-GW2 so I don't need to change too much and lose a valuable -4

    Thoughts?

Just thinking ahead. I ain't sure of Dzeko yet despited Negredo injury. I want to wait and see will he be nailed and playing good for GW1 before I go for him. The only reason I have that transfer though out is to minimize the arsenal players in my team. I see goals galore against CP hence not starting Ward and have two good attacking players for Arsenal

what do people think about going for 2 heavy hitters in def/mid/attack for balance or are people more inclined to load up on mids this season?

    DDG (Myhill)
    Baines Cahill Debuchy (Davies Yun)
    Hazard Ramsey Mata Sigurdsson (Traore)
    Rooney Dzeko Kane

I know too back heavy and Kane is not a definate but if he is i like that team.

But Kane won't be a regular starter, that's the problem that you can't ignore. In which case you are relying on Traore (or 1pters from Kane). Looking at Everton's fixtures and the value on offer in DF (e.g Bavies or the many 4.5 players), I'd downgrade Baines for sure and get a decent striker

He won't be going to Liverpool, their interest ended when they signed Markovic. Besies, he is wildly inconsistent and has a dreadful final ball, having him in your team would only end in tears, especially seeing him do some amazing stuff and then blaze it over.
