Moving Target

Moving Target – Jordon Mutch

After strengthening his defence with the acquisition of Rio Ferdinand and Steven Caulker, Harry Redknapp’s third signing of the summer saw Jordon Mutch arrive at QPR from Cardiff City. The midfielder has signed a four-year deal with the Loftus Road outfit and follows former Bluebirds team-mate Caulker back into the Premier League just three months after the Welsh club dropped down into the Championship.

Discussing his move with the R’s official website, Mutch was delighted to be given the chance to prove himself in the English top-flight once again:

“I don’t see a better place for me than QPR at the moment. The club is heading in the right direction and I’m really excited about the season ahead. I thought I had a good first season in the Premier League last year with Cardiff, so I was delighted when QPR came in for me and offered a route back to the top flight. I’m really happy to be here and hopefully we can do well this season.”

The History

Mutch spent five years in the Derby County youth system before moving to Birmingham City as a 15-year-old in 2007. Handed his debut by the St Andrews outfit the following year, Mutch was then confined to a wheelchair for three months after his rapid rate of growth caused fractures in both feet.

Fully recovered, he was sent out on loan to Hereford Town (four appearances) and Doncaster Rovers (two goals in 17 league games) in 2009/10 before being farmed out to Watford the following season, where he netted five times and provided six assists in 23 matches. Mutch was unable to convince the Blues of his worth, though, and, after a total of two goals and nine assists in 36 outings, was sold to Cardiff in June 2012.

The midfielder’s first season with the Bluebirds was far from impressive, though. Mutch failed to produce any returns over 22 Championship appearances and was far from our Fantasy radars when the Welsh outfit arrived in the Premier League last summer. Initially, his Fantasy fortunes looked non-existent after he was handed just one minute’s game time in the opening five matches but Mutch’s eye for goal prevailed, as he proceeded to serve up seven goals and five assists over the course of his first year in the English top division.

On the international stage, the 22-year-old has featured at youth level a total of nine times for England but is yet to make the step up to the senior side.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Redknapp requires a goal-getting presence in midfield to take the pressure off Charlie Austin up front. Last season, Junior Hoilett was top scoring midfielder for the R’s with just four goals in 38 Championship appearances and although the Canadian has impressed over the summer, Redknapp’ admitted Mutch’s record in the Premier League was a big factor in persuading him to splash the cash:

“Jordon’s a fine young player, with a big, big future. He’s already shown what he can do at this level with Cardiff last season with a decent goals return – and this move will provide him with a great platform to take his game on to the next level. He wants to learn and improve his game. He’s a good pro with a great attitude and this is a big opportunity for him at QPR.”

Despite being limited to 2,399 minutes for the Bluebirds last year, Mutch still managed a total of 55 attempts last year. This equates to 43.6 minutes per shot – put into perspective, it’s just behind Eden Hazard (41.5), Christian Eriksen (42.2) and David Silva (42.4). In terms of minutes per goal, the QPR new boy’s average of 342.7 minutes in 2013/14 was quicker than the likes of Adam Lallana and Juan Mata (355.8) and underlines his potential.

Indeed, Mutch’s arrival looks to put pressure on Hoilett for the season ahead. A recent change in tactics has seen Redknapp roll out a 3-4-1-2 formation over the summer, with Hoilett stationed behind the front pair, but the Canadian may be forced out wide or even onto the bench if the R’s boss turns to the more prolific Mutch to take up the role in “the hole”.

After proving himself as a genuine budget option last term, Mutch could be set for further investment once again. Yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, a cost of 5.5 (the same as Adel Taarabt) looks the likeliest scenario in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game on the back of last season’s heroics for the Bluebirds – more expensive than the likes of Hoilett and Joey Barton (5.0), for example, but as the numbers above suggest, Mutch’s frequency of attempts is more in line with pricier alternatives.

With home encounters against Hull, Sunderland and Stoke in the first five Gameweeks, Redknapp’s side have a decent opening run in front of their own fans. Certainly, trips to Spurs and United dent their opening appeal but, bearing in mind Mutch scored three times against Liverpool and also netted against Chelsea last season, it’s fair to say that Redknapp’s new acquisition has already shown signs that he’s more than capable of rising to the occasion.

Morning everyone. I've put my binoculars on these days, yesterday I came up with a potential 4.0 option in Bartley (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/7763485), today I've potentially found another 4.0 option who looks to be nailed on for the start of the Premier League season.

    Presenting to you...err....Alan Hutton

Here is some of the information that I gathered from the following articles in the Birmingham Mail and the Daily Mirror:
    http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/aston-villas-alan-hutton-forgives-4002325)

'The Scottish defender feared for his Premier League future and a move away from Villa Park was looking inevitable. When Paul Lambert told him he was in his plans for the forthcoming season it came as a massive surprise.Hutton now appears to be Villa’s first choice right-back going into the 2014/15 campaign. It’s a massive turnaround from the past two seasons, in which he hadn’t played a single game during Lambert’s reign. Hutton has earned his spot after an excellent pre-season playing five games, including scoring the only goal at Walsall on Tuesday night in a 1-0 win. Lambert needs all his experienced players ahead of challenging season with the club up for sale and little funds for new players.'

Here is what Hutton had to say:

'It’s been a long time since I was involved so to be given this opportunity again is great. Who would have thought it could have happened? Certainly not me. With what has gone on in the last few seasons I thought my future would lie elsewhere. But the boss has given me a chance to show what I can do. I think I’ve had a decent pre-season and he’s stuck with me. I just have to work double hard now to show everybody I can play. I want to prove to everybody I’m capable of doing it.'

Another point worth mentioning is that Hutton and Wisdom rotate home and away perfectly over the season

    Cheers 😀

Yeh, my thoughts too. Those early Villa fixtures don't help. That's the problem with Moore at Leicester as well.

Why isn't anyone talking about Baird at WBA - isn't he a likely starter?

I agree with you. Have Hutton Bartley and Wisdom currently

It appears Hutton was loaned out to trim the wage bill and could now be number one, especially after manager turned down offer from QPR hes started the friendlies and scored too

Swansea may sign a replacement for Chico so that needs watching , but currently Bartley in pole position

You are both looking at it from a weekly perspective. If two or three rotating attackers for one or two spots get your starting xi more points than the one or two players you would have had instead over an extended period of time then it's a success. The odd week you bench more points than you play are meaningless in this context.
I'm not doing it now fwiw because none striker me as better than the regular starters but I've had success with it before

fair enough. I prefer the set and forget technique.

Question, has anyone ever done a comparison between one keepr every week vs 2 rotating? I would be interested to see the numbers of say Howard stand alone vs Krul/Mannone rotation from last year for example

I don't have a problem leaving points on the bench, true it's a bit annoying but at least it's unlikely your bench player is going to start losing value. What about all the points you've left in the stands (i.e. players not in your squad at all)?

In all seriousness Bojan could prove to be a decent option early doors....

    * Seems to be no1 choice for Stoke
    * Has some decent pre-season form
    * Is cheap
    * Stoke have some great early fixtures.

    So what's stopping me?

If he turns out to be a dud aka Boselli MkII then it would take some surgery elsewhere (after reinvesting the cash) to ramp up the forward line.

For that reason, I may stay clear of Bojan-elli 😉

Bojan always has decent pre season form
Hes a player who cant handle the physical side of the game and is easily intimidated.
He does well in friendlies because the intensity isnt there.

I think what's stopping you is track record. Bojan's like the sprinter who storms through the heats and then can't get out of his blocks in the final. Wherever he's gone he's failed to produce consistently. Didn't he only play for Barca because his Dad was Coach at the time he came through the ranks?

If I was looking at a cheap Stoke front 7 player it would be Odemwingie. Re-classified as a mid and with a track record of scoring goals against average opposition. Only question about him is if he's still #1 choice after coming back to training late from the WC

hmm I think it great that we now have all these 4m options...means we can probably set up some sort of three rotation + 2 big hitters and still put lots of funds into the forward lines

just a thought, there is a possibility that sturridge, rvp, rooney, aguero and costa will all be fit for gw2...how could you justify having a cheap 3rd striker with such outrageous potential around?

Aguero and Sturridge won't stay fit. Most already have Rooney and Costa to start off with too.

Once RVP is fit you'd probably want him instead of Rooney.

As for 3 expensive strikers, the money has to come from somewhere, and from the sounds of it even with a cheap defence you'd have to have a cheap midfield too.

FPL always produces unexpected bargains in all 3 positions and so the key is establishing the bargains early once the season starts.

Safest Stoke is Begovic or Shawx. The rest are a lottery.

Not sure Shawx is worth the same as a MUFC defender though. Even the £5m Stokies aren't nailed on either. It's poor value FPL wise, other than Begovic.

As far as I'm concerned Filipe Luis is nailed, he has to be.

He was arguably the best, if not one of the best, left back(s) in the world last season. He played for a club that won its domestic league and was a CL runner-up. He's 28 and should have started for the Selecao if Scolari wasn't such a coward. He was also given the #3 jersey.

You don't spend big money on someone like that, and he doesn't leave the club he's excelling at, just to rotate with a right-footed right back who deputized last season (albeit did very well in the role).

I'm sticking with Dzeko for now. And just monitor as the season progresses. He's a pure goalscorer who will lead the line for at least the first few weeks. Then there are others the same price or cheaper you can always switch to if necessary (Giroud/Bony/Pelle)

I would like Dzeko, but I think he is too unsure of starts, especially when Aguero is back. If he gets starts he is an excellent option.

I like fab very much (but I currently have no room over for him either).

Which part of your team have you found hardest to choose so far?

I've heard quite a few saying MF has been hard to choose (Cesc v Haz, Rambo v Sanch etc...) but I think that these are nice problems to have and just demonstrate an abundance of options for us to choose from.

Attack is more limited in options, but the ones there are very sound and obvious and allow for a range of different approaches. I'd say the keeper situation is the same.

Leaving the DF. Which has been a total minefield for me. I haven't touched my front 8 or GK's in more than a week but change my DF around every day. Chelsea DFers rotation, Cameron, Bavies, Utd options nailed?, Mariappa, the 4.0 conundrum. It's a bleeding nightmare!

    What about you guys?

Always defence, its by far the most important.
The rest will be constantly changing with transfers, but need thre defence to be right

This. At the cheap end of the market it's a minefield identifying those nailed-ons within the right rotations. You really want them to do a job for at least 10 GWs while you use transfers for the bigger hitters.

Yeah. Midfielders are hard because there are too many good options. Defenders are terrible because of the nailed-on-ness-factor, especially for 4.0´s 😛

I’ve settle on the defense with Baines and Caulker anchoring that surrounded by O’Shea and Taylor or another 4.5er. Midfield you have your standards. the Hazards and Matas. Up front has to be the hardest part. I’ve gone the boring route and have taken up Rooney and Sturridge. While I will be switching between Bojan and Weimann from time to time.

Anybody here saving money for the first transfer to be able to upgrade to the one that hits the ground running?

I currently have 2m in the bank and have a good team anyway I think. Thinking about loosing Krul to a 4.0 and have 2.5 in the bank.

    How about you?

Riviere's quite the differential but good on you. My concern would be gametime for Cameron and Davies (if it's Ben - Curtis is nailed on). You might find Hutton playing more than you'd like.

Had a little tinker with my team tonight, and ended up with Matic as my 5th midfielder.

His pts per min was the same as Henderson last season, and since both played full games that means pts per game also.

Nailed on, in a top team, good assist potential, all for 5.5m.

Anyone else thinking of going with him?
I know a 4.5m gets you more elsewhere, but really thinking about it, does it?

Meh. 5.5 is too much for a 5th mid as it is, then when you consider he'll be the deepest of Chelsea's entire MF, the appeal just lessens.

And yes, the extra mil for me was most welcome to spend elsewhere.

Don't do it. He'll never be a prolific FPL scorer and 5.5m is too expensive for a 5th mid. Having Matic will also restrict you from getting 3 (good) Chelsea players if they hit some form/good fixtures.

I say 5th midfielder, but I also have a 6m in Siggy & Bojan. So the three of them would rotate as necessary.

He doesn't need to be prolific at that price. He's good for 8 or so assists and a couple of goals I reckon, which for the cash is pretty damn good.

Taking up the 3rd Chelsea slot is valid, but not overly concerned.

Ssshhhh - I've got him but I'm the only one 😉

He'll play regularly, but rarely get more than 3 points. I do however fancy him for the odd header at a set piece.A slow burner, he should end up with a good PPM rate at the end of the season.

Plus I think he can be better than that, he's got a very good eye for a pass.

Not on Europa League qualifying for those with Hull players. If they win tonight they will be playing on 21st and 28th August. Stoke (H) and Villa (A) are the fixtures after those games.

Depending on who and where they play in EL they could end up with a let-down in one of those games. Their longest scheduled journey during the season would have been to Southampton so it's not like they are used to traveling long distances between games 😀

Already have Ward, had Caulker but downgraded him to Rosenior so I could get Hazard back in the team.

Not sold on QPR defensively, but Caulker offers good attacking returns so I see the logic.
