Moving Target

Moving Target – Jordon Mutch

After strengthening his defence with the acquisition of Rio Ferdinand and Steven Caulker, Harry Redknapp’s third signing of the summer saw Jordon Mutch arrive at QPR from Cardiff City. The midfielder has signed a four-year deal with the Loftus Road outfit and follows former Bluebirds team-mate Caulker back into the Premier League just three months after the Welsh club dropped down into the Championship.

Discussing his move with the R’s official website, Mutch was delighted to be given the chance to prove himself in the English top-flight once again:

“I don’t see a better place for me than QPR at the moment. The club is heading in the right direction and I’m really excited about the season ahead. I thought I had a good first season in the Premier League last year with Cardiff, so I was delighted when QPR came in for me and offered a route back to the top flight. I’m really happy to be here and hopefully we can do well this season.”

The History

Mutch spent five years in the Derby County youth system before moving to Birmingham City as a 15-year-old in 2007. Handed his debut by the St Andrews outfit the following year, Mutch was then confined to a wheelchair for three months after his rapid rate of growth caused fractures in both feet.

Fully recovered, he was sent out on loan to Hereford Town (four appearances) and Doncaster Rovers (two goals in 17 league games) in 2009/10 before being farmed out to Watford the following season, where he netted five times and provided six assists in 23 matches. Mutch was unable to convince the Blues of his worth, though, and, after a total of two goals and nine assists in 36 outings, was sold to Cardiff in June 2012.

The midfielder’s first season with the Bluebirds was far from impressive, though. Mutch failed to produce any returns over 22 Championship appearances and was far from our Fantasy radars when the Welsh outfit arrived in the Premier League last summer. Initially, his Fantasy fortunes looked non-existent after he was handed just one minute’s game time in the opening five matches but Mutch’s eye for goal prevailed, as he proceeded to serve up seven goals and five assists over the course of his first year in the English top division.

On the international stage, the 22-year-old has featured at youth level a total of nine times for England but is yet to make the step up to the senior side.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Redknapp requires a goal-getting presence in midfield to take the pressure off Charlie Austin up front. Last season, Junior Hoilett was top scoring midfielder for the R’s with just four goals in 38 Championship appearances and although the Canadian has impressed over the summer, Redknapp’ admitted Mutch’s record in the Premier League was a big factor in persuading him to splash the cash:

“Jordon’s a fine young player, with a big, big future. He’s already shown what he can do at this level with Cardiff last season with a decent goals return – and this move will provide him with a great platform to take his game on to the next level. He wants to learn and improve his game. He’s a good pro with a great attitude and this is a big opportunity for him at QPR.”

Despite being limited to 2,399 minutes for the Bluebirds last year, Mutch still managed a total of 55 attempts last year. This equates to 43.6 minutes per shot – put into perspective, it’s just behind Eden Hazard (41.5), Christian Eriksen (42.2) and David Silva (42.4). In terms of minutes per goal, the QPR new boy’s average of 342.7 minutes in 2013/14 was quicker than the likes of Adam Lallana and Juan Mata (355.8) and underlines his potential.

Indeed, Mutch’s arrival looks to put pressure on Hoilett for the season ahead. A recent change in tactics has seen Redknapp roll out a 3-4-1-2 formation over the summer, with Hoilett stationed behind the front pair, but the Canadian may be forced out wide or even onto the bench if the R’s boss turns to the more prolific Mutch to take up the role in “the hole”.

After proving himself as a genuine budget option last term, Mutch could be set for further investment once again. Yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, a cost of 5.5 (the same as Adel Taarabt) looks the likeliest scenario in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game on the back of last season’s heroics for the Bluebirds – more expensive than the likes of Hoilett and Joey Barton (5.0), for example, but as the numbers above suggest, Mutch’s frequency of attempts is more in line with pricier alternatives.

With home encounters against Hull, Sunderland and Stoke in the first five Gameweeks, Redknapp’s side have a decent opening run in front of their own fans. Certainly, trips to Spurs and United dent their opening appeal but, bearing in mind Mutch scored three times against Liverpool and also netted against Chelsea last season, it’s fair to say that Redknapp’s new acquisition has already shown signs that he’s more than capable of rising to the occasion.

Which would you choose (knowing that the rest of my midfield is Eriksen, Mata, Fab)?

    A/ Pelle + Sigurdsson + Albrighton

B/ Bojan + Sigurdsson + Henderson (+1M to upgrade my defence)

    C/ Bojan + Albrighton + Sterling/Nasri/Oscar/Coutinho (or someone else?)

He's been great for us, best striker in the eredivisie the last two years.

When he first arrived everybody laughed as he never scored a goal playing with AZ but he turned out to be the goalscorer we needed. Now we are all in tears because he left...

Eredivisie is not the PL though and that's keeping me getting him from the start.
If you look at Bryan Ruiz, he was the best player in the Eredivisie and I had really high hopes him doing ok in the PL but we all know how that ended.

Same with Tadic, took over where Ruiz left and was oustanding for Twente the past years but it's wait and see for me.

True agree, but will either actually be in your starting 11? or just sitting on the bench?

point is, if fixtures are the argument, that would suggest you plan to play them, otherwise you would go for the player who over the entire season will outscore the other.

    Why a defence of 6.5 - 5.5 - 4 - 4 - 4

    Is better than

    A defence of. 6.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4

    1. The first defence has two playwrs that play every week with just one of the other three playing
2 The second defence has one player that plays every week , and two from the other four

So defence one has to pick one player from three or 33% of available resources
While defence two has to pick two from four 50% of resources
There is a better chance that the first defence will have better fixtures

Defence one having two top defenders is also likely to have better attacking returns as the 5.5 player should perform better than any of the 4.5 ones . And the 4 player that is chosen for team one will likely be on a good fixture so that spot could also do well

When we look at the bench, team 1 works better every time as there always only 8m sitting on the bench , while the second team has 8.5 or 9

The only thing team two has going for it is that its. Easier to construct, there are more 4.5 options available, although there appear no real standouts
Team one requires more work and research, but hopefully there will be enough 4 players available, its starting to look that way

Good points, but your last point it most important. I just dont think there will be 3 at 4,0 who will play enough games. It may look that way now, but a couple of transfers and your plan is ruined.

Problem with option 1 is the uncertainty associated with 4.0 defenders. Nobody seems to know for sure (or with reasonable doubt) which of the 4.0 defenders is going to be a guaranteed starter

I agree, but the amount of work you put in finding a 4.0 defender that you think is going to start might be completely ruined by :
          - a last minute signing that will replace your 4.0 defender
          - all the uncertainty surrounding their starting or non-starting status

Besides, those 4.0 defenders are probably from sides that might not be the most solid defensively

Or if vermaelen went to utd then a 4 could turn to a 4.5

      Agree on most part.

But your point about Defence One is really about 2 starters and 3 rotating guys for a spot. Price doesn't count much, since some 5.0s are worth a spot week in, week out.

I, for example, am going for 6.5 5.0 4.5 4 4 which is similar with Defence One and I'm comfortable with it.

Exactly the same layout as mine. The issue with 5.5s is I don't really trust United just yet, and don't fancy Debuchy hugely early doors either. Whereas at 5.0 there's a few I reckon can be played every week as well, be it Caulker (home cs potential and goal threat all the time), Clyne (fixtures post GW-1) or Davies should he lock down a spot.

Caulker is a good pick for the first 3 GWs at the very least but I have no room for him 🙁 Ferdinand is decent alternative for him for the remaining 3 spots imo.

Question marks on United D iI know but it's the LVG effect. I'm still with him atm.

going with 3x4.0 effectively gives you no bench for defence, and if we consider the fact you have all your money poured into the front 8, chances are a couple of injuries will have you without a full XI since you have to field at least three at the back (and no matter what happens up field, these boys will always come in)

I don't want to waste loads of transfers sorting out a third defender if those 4.0s fall out of the frame as they are likely to do (hence the price) - a 4.0 replacement (when you already have three!!) is going to be impossible to find.

Considerin Lukaku now has a season with Everton under his belt and starts off with Leicester followed by a home game against his ex club and then away game against his ex club im considerin goin for him over dzeko. the guaranteed 90 mins a game does help too

Can he play 90 though? For me that's one of his downfalls. He gets tired quickly and when Europa kicks in he won't manage two games a week. But he could kick off the season with a bang with those fixtures, as you point out.

Are the player projections based purely on stats over the last few seasons or do they take other influences into account (i.e. changes of manager)? They have Rooney to outscore RVP over the season, and Crystal Palace to only keep 9 clean sheets. Surely Palace will keep more than 9 with Pulis at the helm, and isn't the general consensus that RVP will be better under LVG?

            Thanks. 😉
If he plays well, then he'll make that spot his own. I think he can given the easy fixtures they have to begin with

None are nailed for certain. Hutton and Moore seem the most likely atm. Bartley too if Chico leaves and Swansea don't sign another CB.

Sunderland's new left back is quite popular. No one's seen him yet.

          I'm asking.

I can't think of any solid reasoning myself, but if you have heard something to make you think its a must, I'd love to be in the know.
