The Community Round Up

The timing of winter Wildcards is proving crucial right now. While many in the Fantasy Football Scout community are hanging on until the bitter end of the transfer window, some of those who drafted in Sergio Aguero last week are perhaps regretting the decision to bring him in so soon. Our community writers were full of advice this week on Wildcard squads, ways to climb up the rankings and which Chelsea assets to select. The week’s hot topics examined defensive line ups and expensive forward lines, while the Members Tables took a cheeky look at Gameweek 22’s penalty-gate, which left Leighton Baines owners heartbroken. We take time out to revisit all this and, as ever, catch up on the latest ups and downs in our community tournaments.

The Community Articles

As Wildcards continue to be dealt, the current leader of the FFScout moderators and contributors league, Greenwindmill, took his turn to mull over the options, in the latest in our regular Rate My Wildcard Team series. Getting the right balance of heavy hitters, mid price punts and cheap bench players is proving key to his decision.

Selecting the right Chelsea players is a tricky task – not only are there numerous options, there’s also the threat of a possible blank Gameweek 27 looming large, should they progress to the Capital One Cup final. Thankfully Ruccells was on hand to look over the key Chelsea contenders. Meanwhile, Jaffalicious‘s focus was on getting the best cheap defensive rotation out of your wildcard as well as the pitch time and value of Chelsea’s key midfield trio of Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard and Oscar.

Another consideration for wildcarders is current rank, says Triggerlips. His excellent article on the best strategies for the remainder of the season has a strong focus on matching the best tactics to your current overall ranking. The ensuing discussion also spilled out into the main article comment section, where the community offered further rank-climbing tips.

Sergio Aguero is a player many are hoping will propel them up the rankings, but Ruth_NZ offers up some analysis to suggest he may not be the saviour some believe.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Defenders are proving tough to pick for those on a Wildcard. Among the most popular picks, according to (Charlie) Austin 3:16’s discussion on the latest must haves, are Chelsea and Southampton defenders.

Toaster’s look at the Arsenal options in defence will also prove crucial reading for those looking to assemble the best back lines, as will Ludo’s rankings of the Premier League’s best defences so far. This offers another strong argument in favour of drafting in Southampton and Chelsea defenders. Meanwhile, Ice thinks that Arsenal’s cut price defender Hector Bellerin looks primed for points, after seemingly wrestling the right back berth off Calum Chambers.

In midfield, the search for differentials continues. Southampton’s Eljero Elia is among the latest crop of names being considered but our resident Bundesliga expert Portsmouth Bubblejet, urges caution. The winger, who is on loan from Werder Bremen, had mixed fortunes in Germany, where his bursts of good form have proved short lived.

Another increasingly popular midfield differential is Crystal Palace’s Jason Puncheon, who looks revitalised under the watchful eye of new Eagles boss Alan Pardew. Walsh’s excellent look at how Pardew is utilising Puncheon in different ways offers hope to his new owners as well as some seeds of doubt.

Sticking with midfield options, we revisited Kroos Kontrol’s early January article on fourth midfielders, which looked at those who fall between heavy hitter and bench fodder status. In our discussion New Head Coach is For Kinnear believes Manchester City and Arsenal offer the best locations to find these potentially lucrative players.

Whether or not to draft in Chelsea’s 17-goal hero Diego Costa was the key issue being asked by Rozzo, as the community turned its attention to their forward lines this week. In the ensuing debate Granville argued having Fabregas provides enough cover for Costa’s goals, whereas Debauchy was among those looking to bring him back in on their wildcard.

For some, shoe-horning in Costa and Aguero is an option, despite both coming with weighty price tags. Rupert The Horse was on hand to look at the type of midfield Fantasy managers would be left with if they opted for this pricey pair.

It is not just winter Wildcards that some of the community are hanging onto, some still have their initial Wildcard at their disposal. Patio Kev was on hand this week with a word of warning for those holding back in anticipation of a raft of double Gameweeks later in the season.

Finally, Fiona B launched a Monday Morning Miffed discussion, with Aguero’s single point among the many grumblings. This looks like it could be a good regular hot topic in the frustrating Gameweeks ahead.

The Members Tables

When Kevin Mirallas took the ball off Everton’s usual penalty taker Leighton Baines and promptly missed against the Baggies last Monday, the Belgian became public enemy number one among the England defender’s 632,000 FPL owners. To lighten the mood Dub has constructed this cheeky table on the Mirallas Effect on Baines.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

As a testament to the success of the Scout Picks this season, which are compiled with help from a Community Champion, our picks now top @OFCProdigy’s Scout Picks Challenge. Following Gameweek 21 we leapt into first place with Mookie in second and Sticky Mockwell in third.

While Greenwindmill continues to top the FFScout moderators and contributors league he faces a new rival in Mark, who has leapt into second with an impressive Gameweek 22 score of 79.

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing competition, 508 teams survived after 48 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 33.

Elsewhere, Sarbab Das remains at the summit of the Long and Winding Road main league, while it was all change at the top of the Top 1,000 Any Season league, where Ross Gillard is the new leader.

In Red Lightning’s FFS January Wildcard League (352700-723212), Andy in Asia is the new leader despite not having played his winter wildcard yet. Entry remains open during the winter transfer window.

Meanwhile, in another of Red Lightning’s leagues, Aaron Thorburn still leads the Top 10k Any Season League and following Gameweek 22’s matches moved up to 32nd in the world.

Evening! Fancy having a look in at my current WC team?

    Panti - 4 mil
    Terry - Fonte - Jones - Bellerin - Baird
    Sanchez - Hazard - Fabregas - Cazorla - Puncheon
    Aguero - Austin - Kane

Still debating about the 3rd striker/5th mid positions, but Puncheon is mainly in there b/c the funds allow, and I don't see any obvious upgrades with the funds say a Boyd 5th mid would allow.

    What do you reckon?

Thanks for the feedback - I'm not sure I agree that it's overkill though. Why would anyone consider cazorla or Wally or Ramsey if anything more than sanchez was surplus? I think they represent strong picks in their own right.

Nevertheless, I appreciate the comment, I need the opportunity to justify my picks in my own mind and that can only come through critique. Cheers!

Puncheon to JWP/Boyd/Colback would give cash to get 2nd GK or upgrade Austin/Kane in future if required 🙂

      1. Geordienufc1
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

I considered upgrading my 2nd keeper but it was pointed out to me that a lot of Panti's points come away from home anyway. The Austin/Kane point is one that is more persuasive I think. I suppose it's difficult to visualise needing to draft in a mid-priced striker given the relative lack of viable options atm, and the relative glut of options at the budget level, but certainly something to think about.

        Cheers!

Not for rotation. Just for safety incase Pantilimon's match gets postponed due to weather or something 🙂

            • 10 Years
            9 years, 3 months ago

In the hypothetical scenario in which a 2nd keeper is required to sub on due to fixture postponement, I wouldn't imagine I'd be losing out on more than 2 points, as I likely would have just played the other keeper of a CS seemed likely. Given that reasoning, don't you think the .4 or .6 saving would offer better value?

            1. Holmes
              • 10 Years

Dont think that 0.6m or even 50m will have any value if its in bank. That 2pts will give an advantage over those going without 2nd GK, thats it 😛 Your points are valid though, Good Luck! 🙂

EL ..PISTOLERO has his points , though given the ppg of Sanchez Fab Haz , and an in form assoc. with good fixtures Caz , it could still be alright in a long run..you probably can expect a few low point gw for that combo , make sure you are ready for that..Bellerin Baird could be of rotation risk , Austin and Kane might continue their blanks , so try to reconsider another draft imo .

      1. Geordienufc1
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

One can never be 100% free of risk, although I don't feel my selections are really attached with too much risk. Bellerin is an area of concern, though at that price he's worth a punt imo (easily downgraded to PvA if he doesn't start next GW). Of course Austin and Kane COULD continue their blanks, but I dont think that's really a strong enough justification for not including them, especially considering there are so many other options at that price SHOULD they fail.

Apologies if I am coming across as arrogant at all, or unappreciative - I appreciate all feedback - thanks 🙂

you have your points , go the way you are confident with . Kane and Austin are still the main strike forces of their respective teams , so could be fine . Alternate between 3-5-2 and 4-4-2 accordingly .

GK: Sufficient - Panti is a great pick and I'd be happy having him as my only keeper. Just hope a Sunderland game doesn't get called off for some reason, or Panti gets injured.

DEF: Excellent. Love it. All 5 seem like great picks, you may have a few benching dilemmas!

MID: Hazard and Sanchez pick themselves. Fabregas' consistency is impressive and he's clearly a good pick too. Cazorla is a good option, although I think his output will reduce when the likes of Wally and Ozil are back in the team. I'd consider getting Boyd as a 5th mid as I don't like rotating attackers due to the unpredictability of attacking returns, and Austin and Kane have both scored in hard games on paper before which makes benching them risky.

FWD: Same 3 that I currently have. Lack of Costa is a slight worry but Austin and Kane are great value and your 4 big mids should give your midfield an edge over Costa owners. Time will tell whether avoiding Diego is the right decision or the wrong one.

Cheers innsie - really appreciate the thorough feedback! Caz is certainly the "4th midfielder" in this team - to be moved out easily if form should dictate. A shorter term pick I think, though I may reconsider his inclusion. Indeed, Diego is a risk. If he does explode in the next few weeks (worst case scenario) I do always have my initial WC to make the requisite changes.

        Thanks mate!

Cazorla still a good option then? Even with Ozil?

Was funny to see the Chavs crumble from 2-0 up for sure.

Boreinhos comments after the game were his usual standard, disgusting man.

Morning all. I am thinking about who to put as my 5th defender. Think it is between just go with Marney and save the bucks for a rainy day, or go with JWP. I plan to play 343 every week so unless JWP hits some incredible form he will likely be on the bench for ever. But the thing is that I dont have anything else to use the 0.4 on so it might be worth it to splash it on am 'expensive' 5th mid? What do you think? I also fear JWP being back on the bench when especially Mane returns

I don't believe in rainy day money. Get it spent.
If you need money at some point, well, cross that bridge when it comes.

Cheers. But do younthink JWP is the best 5th defender? He is not nailed as I can understand?

I'd probably just go with Boyd tbh.

Agree with Epicfail, spend the cash. The one exception might be if you were punting on a very cheap 3rd forward (Ayoze say) and would otherwise not be able to upgrade to anyone else

You mean 5th 'midfielder'. Boyd or JWP are the best bets IMO. The former is the safe option and the latter is more of a risk but with a better upside

    Heaton Panti
    Terry Clyne Hutton Wisdom Cameron
    Sanchez Hazard Fabregas AdM Boyd
    Kane Aguero Ings

I want Costa as near the top of ML and others have him...over the next few GW

    Fab to Cazorla
    AdM to Moses
    Ings to Costa

    Good moves? Thanks

What's the general consensus on this:

Have both Aguero & Costa? Which in turn has a detriment effect on your midfield

    Or

Have one of Aguero & Costa? But, you get too have a stronger midfield

      I have both.

I think that is the 100m £ question. There is possibly Sturridge to think about too, so having 2 premium forwards to allow a change might be worth considering

As it stands I have both, have a solid defense, but midfield pretty weak... Puncheon & Elia as my other 2 midfield starters

I totally understand that point Ryan..... & completely concur..... I think for more consistent/solid cap options having Aguero & Costa is best way

I for one will always captain Haz/Sanchez/Kun over Costa, so Costa is too expensive if you won't captain him I guess.

If you still have 2 WC and are planning on using one next week and the other for double GW

How many GWs are you likely to have between them and surely it must be worth some punts for the short period?

    Thoughts?

Players with form and fixtures over next 6 like Caz or Oscar must be high on the list unless you have significant value tied to replacemt players

      There won't be any DGW.

I have therefore divided the remaining season in two.

      24-31.

      32-38.

Are Everton in big trouble this season?

Crystal Palace A - Liverpool H - Chelsea A its quite possible they could pick up 0 points from the next three and be in the bottom three come a few weeks...could they be the best club to go down since West Ham with Lamps & Cole and co?
