Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Gunners Shocked at the Emirates

Arsenal slump to a surprise 3-1 home loss to Monaco, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain emerging from the bench to grab his side’s consolation. The worries build for Palace up front, Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson miss Liverpool’s clash with Besiktas, whilst Billy Jones could return for Sunderland this weekend.

Wenger Unhappy with Defence

Arsene Wenger made just two changes for his starting XI for last night’s clash with Monaco, bringing in Hector Bellerin and Kieran Gibbs for Calum Chambers and Nacho Monreal in the full-back areas. The Gunners boss once again preferred Danny Welbeck to Theo Walcott on the right, whilst Olivier Giroud led the line before being hauled off on 60 minutes after an ineffectual display.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s strike off the bench wasn’t enough to prevent Arsenal’s run of nine straight home wins coming to an end and, after the match, his manager was far from happy with the display at both ends of the pitch:

“We missed chances and were a bit suicidal defensively. We were unlucky because the first goal was deflected, but the second and third goals were suicidal. It looks like we have lost our nerve and our rationality on the pitch. The heart took over the head, and at this level that doesn’t work.”

Wenger also commented on Giroud’s performance, saying that the Gunners’ forward spurned some clear-cut opportunites:

“I felt he had an off night tonight. He missed easy chances and it looked like it was not one of his best days.”

The Scout Says: Wenger’s damning assessment of Arsenal’s performance at the Emirates perhaps strengthens the idea that he’ll freshen things up for Sunday’s home clash against Everton. Bellerin’s shaky display may well allow Chambers a way back, whilst Monreal – having started each of the last six league matches – is likely to edge Gibbs back onto the bench. With regards to Arsenal’s attacking players, Walcott was handed 30 minutes after replacing Welbeck on the right flank and may well be in line for a start against the Toffees as Wenger alternates the pair, though Oxlade-Chamberlain’s strike also brings him into contention either in the middle or out wide. After a run of fine performances, Giroud did himself no favours on the night, failing to hit the target with any of his six attempts at goal. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old striker’s run of three goals and two assists in his last five league appearances should hold him in good stead going into Sunday’s match-up.

Worries up front for Palace

Crystal Palace face fresh injury concerns, with growing fears that Fraizer Campbell could be out for around a month with a hamstring strain. Meanwhile, Marouane Chamakh, who’s suffering from the same complaint, is not expected to recover in time for the Eagles’ match against West Ham United. On a positive note, club captain Mile Jedinak is now fully fit and midfielder James McArthur is in line for a start at Upton Park.

The Scout Says: Injuries elsewhere in Palace’s front line could see their joint-top league scorer, Dwight Gayle, spearheading the attack in Saturday’s early kick-off. The 24-year-old striker has been stationed out on the left wing for recent ties against Arsenal and Liverpool, and looks likely to be given the nod ahead of Glenn Murray – considering the seasoned frontman has only recorded one start this campaign. Gayle’s deployment in a more advanced role may lead to the reinstatement of Yannick Bolasie on the left flank, with the DR Congo international yet to be handed a start by boss Alan Pardew since his return from the African Cup of Nations. In midfield, the return of Jedinak and McArthur affords the Eagles boss a real dilemma after he fielded a 4-1-4-1 last week, with Jordan Mutch and Jason Puncheon in the advanced central positions.

Henderson doubtful for City clash

Liverpool midfield stalwart Jordan Henderson and playmaker Philippe Coutinho did not travel to Turkey in preparation for the Reds’ Europa League encounter with Besiktas. The former is carrying a minor ankle complaint, while the latter is being rested by manager Brendan Rodgers. Mamadou Sakho remains sidelined with a hip injury that forced him to sit out the Southampton clash.

Speaking to the press yesterday, Rodgers explained the reasoning behind Coutinho’s absence:

“I’ve had to leave out young Coutinho. He hasn’t travelled with us. He’s an outstanding young player for us, a key player and he’s played a lot of games consecutively for us. This was a game that I’d earmarked to give him some recovery in knowing he can stay at home, not travel and prepare and get ready for the weekend.”

The Scout Says: Coutinho has started Liverpool’s last 19 matches in all competitions, so his omission from Liverpool’s midweek tie in Turkey should perhaps come as no surprise. The Brazilian midfielder has been in fine form of late, notching five assists in his previous nine league outings, and will be pivotal to Rodgers’ plan of attack against Manchester City. Doubts over Henderson’s fitness, however, are a real concern – compounded by the absence of Lucas Leiva and Steven Gerrard. The midfield general has started all but two of the Reds’ Premier League fixtures this term, with his industry in the centre of the park a key contributing factor to Liverpool’s five clean sheets in their last six outings.

Sunderland hopeful on Jones return

Sunderland trio Billy Jones, Jack Rodwell and Will Buckley could be available for selection against Manchester United. Manager Gus Poyet confirmed that Jones’ potential return on the weekend will go right down to the wire.

“Billy Jones will be touch and go so I don’t know if he is going to be available. We’re trying our best and he is much better but we have to take the decision on a daily basis.”

The Scout Says: As we saw last week after Patrick van Aanholt dropped to the bench, Gus Poyet seems undecided on his favoured back-four. The Black Cats boss opted for Santiago Vergini at right-back, allowing Anthony Reveillere to move to the left and displace the Dutchman, suggesting his pitch time is no longer guaranteed. It remains to be seen whether Jones’ availability will have any further impact – the former West Brom man has played just six league matches since arriving on Wearside this season and it may well be that the versatile Reveillere is the safest way forward for those looking to invest in the Sunderland defence – his average of 4.5 points per appearance is 1.4 greater than any other defensive team-mate ahead of clashes with Hull, Villa, Newcastle and Palace in the next six.

    DGW check:
So how many DGWers are people planning to have and which ones?

3 for me I think; Kane, Eriksen and Austin. Not interested in a defender; Spurs defensive stats are shocking and there will be rotation.

      Going with 4...

Vertonghen, Eriksen (VC), Kane (C) and Austin

Hit will be -4 but I feels it's worth taking for those 4.

I also have Yun but I'm thinking of still benching him in favour of Clyne, Fonte and Koscielny

    Scouters,

    Sturridge and Walcott owner here
    2 FTs and
    £2.3M ITB

If Daniel does not start today, he is line for being my C vs MCI.
But then, probably be on the bench midweek vs BUR.
So a candidate to be replace by DGWr Austin

Walcott, after yesterday result and exhibition, surely will start vs EVE.
But then again, will be on the bench vs QPR.
    So Eriksen in for DGW.

This combo help me to crawl back 30k (90k to 60k) places in GW 25, but then did the reverse dropping me another 20k (80k now).

If i go Sturridge -> Austin, should i do also Puncheone/Mane for Sanchez?

    Thanks for reading

That logic rarely works unless you get ridiculously lucky, predicting starts like that is so risky.

That said, spend one FT this week on something else and then re-assess.

        Yohan,
I was in 90k, i needed to take a few risks.
Daniel and Theo seemed the perfect ones. And they repaid, but then, the last GW, i find them on the bench..

I never thought that Brendan would play (for 90min) Daniel in UEL, and that Arsene preferred Welbeck to Walcott… even returning of the ACL operation (its 1 year gone…)

Now i need to re-think my selection.

I think Sturridge will do well, he's a good differential for you, I'd keep him.

My thoughts on Walcott are pretty well known on here so I'll spare you them, but I don't see any reason to panic and get rid this GW.

I'd use your FT on getting rid of Wasil this GW and then look to do Walcott to Eriksen for the double.

Ben Davies is Spurs' League Cup left back.

He has started 4 out of Spurs 5 League Cup games, including the two semi finals vs Sheffield Utd. The only game he missed was the 3rd match vs Newcastle, and he didn't make the bench, perhaps injured.

I can see Ben Davies starting vs Chelsea in the League Cup final. With Rose playing Fiorentina, having a break and returning for Prem action at home to Swansea.

Danny Rose could be a risk worth taking for the DGW, he has a lot of upside, but not without risk. 2 goals 3 assists and seemingly favourite for the Prem games.

      Current Game-week is currently GW26.

      Previous Game-week is currently GW25.

Last match is the most recent match in which the player actually played.

      So Rooney's Last match is Current game-week (GW26), not Previous game-week (GW25).

Haven't been around for a few days but just read the hot topics re DGW. My $0.02.

One thing I've learned from DGWs in the past.

It's safer to go with as many "sensible" DGW players as possible. You have way more to lose than gain if you go without.

A nailed on attacker is guaranteed 4 points. In the case of a Spurs mid, you're likely to get 1 CS point.

If your 4th mid is someone like Boyd/AJ/Siggy who has a low upside for the GW, I would even take the hit to get someone like Matt Philips.

For me, I'll definitely be going with Kane, Eriksen and Austin. Considering a hit/s potentially for Matty Philips and/or Jan Vertonghen, if I can fit them in.

That goes without saying on any given week let alone DGW.

I wouldn't recommend getting players like Mason or Dier, who have low upside or aren't nailed on for example. From the pool of "sensible players", it makes sense to get as many as possible albeit for hits.

Exactly. Last thing I want to see in a DGW is Le Donkey making an appearance in the last 10 minutes of the game for a gorgeous 1 pointer while Austin tearing it apart against the Londoners.

Probably. They had to bring him on at half time the other day. Poch has surely learnt his lesson.

I agree with getting the sensible players which is why I was going to potentially play with 10 this week (if PVA is out) and then get Eriksen, Austin and Vert/Rose next week for -4 but I don't think I can justify a Spurs defender. Leaves you in a crap position for GW29 (mun) and I can see 1 cleanie (if lucky) in the double itself.

I don't think any of the DGW players are worth taking a hit for except Kane and Eriksen. No doubt one of two of the others will end up paying back the 4 points but, on average, they aren't worth it IMO.

I think he will start, Sunderland usually play with 5 at the back against the bigger sides, at least on the road. Keep imo. 2 fts prior to the double as well.

Hey Balders, reckon we'll concede at least one tomorrow?

    - No, Monaco have scored just 26 goals in 25 games in Ligue 1. Koscielny will have old man Berbatov in his pocket for 180 minutes over this tie!

..i'm sad now. Tbf couldn't have argued against you there, but it was always possible, that we were gonna put in a headless-chicken performance after that first goal

Why use a transfer getting rid of a guaranteed starter when he has PVA in his starting 11? PVA to Dawson imo.

PVA > Dawson could back fire

PVA was only dropped one game, not out the question he will get his place back

Dawson is a cb playing at full back. I think he will keep his spot but it is not certain

Defoe away to Man U, Ings, cisse, sakho all have great fixtures. Could also back fire of course but I'm taking the chance

      Defoe > one week punt
      Or
      PVA > long term replacement

      Next week
Defoe / one week punt > Austin
      Caz > Erik
And maybe PVA > rose (-4) if you kept PVA and he is dropped again

Giroud was going to be my captain this week. Stick with that or go Aguero?

I still like Giroud, Monaco was a tough game no matter what anybody says and Everton have been a bit rubbish at the back this season.

    Post your DGW Team. 😎

    Pantilimon
    Alderweireld Dawson Bertrand
    Sanchez Eriksen Hazard Silva
    Kane (C) Austin (v) Aguero

    Subs: Jones, Wollscheid, Lucas
    2.4M ITB

Perhaps doing Jones>Ivanovic after the DGW or saving that money to upgrade elsewhere.

      Probably

      Panti
      Bertrand, Wolly, Terry
      Eriksen/Silva , Sanchez, Hazard, Mane
      Kane (C), Austin, Aguero

      Krul | Boyd, Naughton, Bellerin

      Panti

Might do a -4 for Jones to Vert/Rose if I'm feeling frisky.
