The Big Numbers – Gameweek 34

Our attentions turn to the weekend’s matches as we delve into the data this evening. We cast an eye over Villa’s in-form duo, assess a couple of Sunderland prospects and analyse the goal threat of Hull’s weekend hero and Liverpool’s little Brazilian as the two go head-to-head at the KC tomorrow.

Benteke still a decent prospect over the next 2 GWs, even though he is up against everton (in form defensively) and West Ham (also in decent defensive form)?

I live in Bournemouth and love the idea of watching premier league games locally. They also play nice attacking football. Thoughts on whether they'll stay up next year?

Any truth about Bournemouth having to play at Fratton Park next season then, due to a small press area at their ground, unsuitable for the Premier League?

It was mentioned on Goals on Sunday a few weeks ago - a quick Google search and I can't find much about it though. It would surely be a big deal if true.

I think they will need to strengthen in depth more than anything. If other good Championship footballing sides experience has shown they will struggle to maintain form throughout the season. They will also struggle if key players are injured.

I hope they stay up and I think early on in the season they have potential to create quite a few upsets, as Burnley and Leicester did. But as the season goes on weaker sides need to go back to basics (go Pulis if you will) and play boring.

I don't see bournemouth going Pulis. Have you watched them play? Attacking play is part of their fabric. We beat Birmingham 0-8. That says alot.

in that case they will be relegated. They will be competing against the likes of Aguero, Hazard etc. They won't be able to match the top sides across the season. To survive in the Premier League as a newly promoted side you need to know when to compromise and when to go full throttle. Blackpool are a prime example of an attacking side that failed to know when to compromise. It cost them dear by the end, but they did well with it early on.

I see what you're saying although losing to Chelsea, City and the like doesn't really matter. It's all about beating lower table sides and upsetting the occasional mid table side.

As you say though, strength in depth will make all the difference and 100M from TV rights and a billionaire owner should hopefully help with that!

For me it depends on their fixtures. An 'easy' one to start, and everyone piles on, making him a prime candidate for a price drop if he blanks as everyone jumps on to the next big cheap mid. I try to avoid players like this. But if he starts away at Chelsea, then it's a possibility.

I think we should hold on a tad. Championship players often boast huge figures coming into the PL and then don't get remotely as much in the PL.

Of course they won't do nearly as well. Still probably going to be the teams top scorer though.

Sadly I think they'll go straight back down. I agree with Jonty, I think they might need to "do a Pulis" with their squad, and I'm not sure they will. I can see them trying to go toe to toe with teams and getting torn apart (unless they strengthen considerably in summer).

I think they may be a team that the neutrals love, but that don't survive. A 2015-16 Blackpool basically.

Don't think they can survive more than 1 season. I was thinking last night about players which AFC can sign. 😀 I was thinking about Butland or Westwood, Trippier, Denayer on loan, Yoshida or Samba, Yun, Whelan from Stoke, Boyd, Sakho from Wolves and Rivierer from NUFC would be my prime targets. 🙂

At what point do we want the players we own, but haven't captained, to fail?

For example, this week, Sterling captainers are hoping for as little points as possible from Hazard, who is captained by 81% of the top 10k and 21% overall.

If we look at a week where there hasn't been a majority of people within the top 10k going with a certain captain, the last one being gameweek 31 (https://fpldiscovery.wordpress.com/2015/04/04/gw-31-transfers-and-team-selection-2/) with Kane at 33%, Austin 28%, Hazard 13%, then would it be beneficial for an Austin captainer's rank, if Austin blanked and Kane scored a hattrick? (didn't happen, but hypothetically).

And what about a Hazard captainer, Kane & Austin owner. If Hazard scored 2 points, Kane and Austin scored 15 points each - would this be a good thing for the Hazard captainer, who also owns, but hasn't captained, Kane & Austin? They're both very highly owned players, let's assume.

      • 10 Years

For Hazard, Aguero, Kane - I wouldn't mind if they blank if I don't captain them...too highly owned to make a difference.

For every other player, i want hattricks.

That's what I'm trying to understand - how highly owned is too highly owned to make a difference?

Hazard. Say he scores 10 points tonight and you haven't captained him. Well you have lost 10 points on 80% of your rivals right there. You have gained on no-one since 100% own him. You want him to blank in every game unless you captain him, end of story.

Of course, the points loss is mitigated by however many points your own captain (Sterling) scores. But it's still better for you if Hazard blanks. If he does than any earned points by Sterling are a gain over Hazard captainers that own Sterling and a double gain over Hazard captainers that don't own Sterling.

If Kane had less than 66% ownership when he had 33% captaincy, non-captainers would want him to score. If his ownership was over 66% you'd want him to blank.

The way I see it, if his captaincy% + ownership% in the top 10k exceed 100, people who don't captain him want a blank.

Thanks - that's the answer I was looking for, it seems to make sense.

He had 99.4% ownership amongst the top 10k, so yeah - I guess that whatever he does, it doesn't really matter, and because he's captained by 33%, that's an extra gain to them.

      2. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

Yep, that's about right I think. If 66.7% own (including you) and 33.3% captain (not you) then whatever he scores is a gain over 33.3% of rivals and an equivalent loss to 33.3% of rivals. So total 100 is the break even point.

Here's a table I created for Sunderland. Sort by the season overall and chance creation, crosses and corners - that gives an indication of Larsson's potential as a one week DGWK punt at 5.3m.
