Captain Sensible – Gameweek 35

Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Eden Hazard leads the way as Chelsea host Palace at the Bridge. The Belgian disappointed over the double Gameweek and blanked in successive matches for only the third time this season but with a win over the Eagles set to clinch the title, over 41% of voters have plumped for Hazard, who has served up double-figures in each of his last two at the Bridge.

Four goals in his previous three earns Sergio Aguero 15% of the votes cast as City make their way to Tottenham. The Argentine has thrived since Manuel Pellegrini switched to a lone striker system and served up a 19-point return against his weekend opponents back in October – his highest haul of the season. Bearing in mind that Spurs are without a home clean sheet since Gameweek 19, Aguero owners will be confident that his scoring streak is set to continue.

Leicester’s Jamie Vardy has picked up 7% backing for a plum home clash against Newcastle. The Magpies have lost seven successive matches under John Carver and have mustered a mere two clean sheets in 22 league outings – with three goals and as many assists in his last six, Vardy could wreak havoc as the Foxes look for a fifth win in six.

Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez have earned 7% and 6% of votes respectively as Arsenal make their way to Hull. The Tigers proved the shock troops of double Gameweek 34 after serving up back-to-back clean sheets but face a tough task in keeping their visitors at bay. Giroud has seven goals and an assist in his last eight in the league, whilst Sanchez – for all the talk of a lack of form – has three strikes and an assist in the previous four in all competitions. Encouragingly, the Chilean has already bagged a 13-point return against Steve Bruce’s side back in Gameweek 8.

Christian Benteke’s eight goals and an assist in the last seven is set to put Everton’s defence to the test this weekend. The Villa forward has two sets of double-figures in the last three in front of his own fans but with the Toffees conceding just two goals in the last six, only 6% are willing to hand the Belgian the armband. It’s worth noting that Everton have managed just two clean sheets away from home all season, though, with the last one arriving in Gameweek 23.

Raheem Sterling (3%) has the chance to redeem himself after failing miserably over the double Gameweek. With Mario Balotelli ruled out, Sterling could return to a central role at home to a QPR side that has managed a single clean sheet on their travels this term.

Harry Kane is surprisingly low down. Backed by just 2% of voters, the Tottenham forward faces a City side that’s conceded in each of their last eight outside of the Etihad and has lost four successive away matches.

Graziano Pelle could be an outside differential. With three goals in as many matches, he travels to Sunderland – a side he racked up 15 points against back in Gameweek 8, when the Saints hit the Wearsiders for eight at St Mary’s.

Juan Mata is backed by just 1% of voters as United look for their seventh straight home win. Louis van Gaal’s side entertain West Brom this time out, having scored 18 goals in their last six outings at Old Trafford.

Anyone else angry at your mates for basically giving up on your ML because they are lagging behind now?

They were all full of talk when it was still competitive, but now "they don't care and have better things to do." What's better than FANTASY LEAGUE??

If I knew I was going to be top of the page I would have not posted that 🙁

My "work league" ended up being 3 of us, and I'm about 200 points clear. It's worse than the SPL.

Same every year for me mate. They start off all cocky and by mid season when I've crushed their team and spirit they have given up.

It's a big problem. If you prefer the banter of your local league instead of the slog of the OR lark then you have to split the season up to maintain interest....Four quarterly leagues should do it... and the FPL site allows you to do that.

I would suggest doing a money league with them, but they are so bad at this that it'll be stealing money from them.

We have a money league and even here people are giving up, the top 3 is pretty clear.

    Two 50/50s this week.

    Hazard (C) over Aguero
    Playing Hendo over Albrighton

I'll be happy as long as I don't get both wrong 😆

    Lost on previous page...
Help me with my transfer this week:

    Ospina, Schmeichel
    Terry, Ivan, Skrtel, PvA, Schlupp
    Hazard, Sterling, Coutinho, Sanchez, Grealish
    Aguero, Vardy, Murray
    (3.6m in the bank)

    a. Giroud in for Murray (that’ll be my 3 Arsenal players sorted)
    b. Benteke in Murray (and then get either Ozil or Ramsey for my 3rd Arsenal player next week)

It basically comes down to whether Giroud is essential, or whether Benteke and a second Arsenal midfielder might be a better option…

    Thanks!

Aguero v Hazard for the (c) is a tough call

    Giroud also in the mix

Hazard definitely the safe way to play it. I'm really tempted to do Aguero(C) though. He loves Spurs!

Aguero for me, it's actually the first time in ages that I've not wavered with my choice. He tends to rip Spurs apart, and Chelsea's attacking stats are dire.

    Current team:

    Myhill
    Terry/Ivanovic/Skrtel
    Downing/Hazard/Sanchez/Herrera/Henderson
    Aguero/Kane

    (Bertrand/Bellerin/Murray/Hamer)

Chasing a 12 point lead. I have already made 2 transfers (-4) to facilitate bringing in Sanchez (hence having Herrera in there). The leader of my mini-league has 4.2 ITB which I'm 90% certain will be used to bring Sanchez back into his side.
Would it be wise to do Murray>Vardy for an extra -4, and then play Vardy over Herrera?

Guys i have some captaincy issues…Haz Giroud Aguero or Sterling...here's my thought process

Hazard - chelsea is going to attack ..title at the bridge…if i dont put him an he performs..my mini league challenge is over

Giroud - differential..away to hull who im 100percent sure cant keep 3 cleans in a row
Aguero - normally scores vs tott and the best bet according to the stats
Sterling - poor stats but with no balo or sturridge will be playing striker role…differential?

Can anyone come to a logical conclusion? who to pick?

Right then folks. I have 50 points to make up in the next 4 weeks so need some advice. The guy I'm chasing has all the usual suspects (heavy on Liverpool and Chelsea with Giroud, Kane and aguero.

    My current squad is:
    Migs myhill
Terry berty wolfchild van A Collins
    Hendo coutinho haz Silva Boyd
    Kane vardy aguero

I need yo differentiate without going bonkers!

Look at my post below haha, similar situation.

Punty side thinks Vardy. If he's likely going Hazard I think it's reasonable to go Kun if chasing.

Chasing down a deficit of 50, and feeling that with my team I could do it.

Who to captain? My rival will go Hazard.

    Davis K - (Pants)
    Ivan - Kosc - Skrtel - (Wolls) - (PvA)
    Siggy - Fabs - Hazard - Coutinho - Ramsey
    Vardy - Aguero - (Murray)

Obvious thought is to go Kun, but what are your thoughts on Vardy, Rambo or any of my 3 defenders?

I say Captain Aguero, he always scores against us. Chelsea will shut up shop as soon as they have a one goal lead.

    Currently have Fabregas, do I;

    A) Keep for GW35 or
    B) Transfer out for Sanchez now, rather than for GW36?

Will Sanchez's price be going up overnight?
