The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Leicester

Having won just four of their first 29 fixtures upon returning to the Premier League, Leicester looked prime candidates for relegation less than 12 months after clinching the Championship. A sensational about-turn in form saw the Foxes drop just four points in the remaining nine matches – with only champions Chelsea getting the better of Nigel Pearson’s side – as a late rally saw them finish the season six points clear of the drop zone.

In our latest article for members, we assess Leicester’s roster, assessing their output in terms of goal threat and creativity.

The Friday PL matches (starting in 2016) will really change the dynamic of FPL. I had a momentary panic that it was starting this year.

        Yeah. One more season left.

I always thought it odd that the premier league didn't have Friday night games.

Yeah it is a bit odd. It'll be weird for Aus/NZrs having a game early sat morning and then the majority late sat night haha

Ah okay that's good then. Because of the slight time difference it's either 6-7am (without daylight saving) or 4-5am with daylight saving.

On the flip side for NZ though is that the night games are absurdly late. The early kickoff starts either at midnight or 2am depending on daylight saving.

Considering there's not much going on here i got a debate for you guys..
What kind of Championship midfielder finds it easier to make the step up to the EPL?
    A) A Pacy Winger
    B) A Set Piece Hog
    C) A Skilled Mid who plays in the hole?

Gonna try and collect some stats over the past 5 years.. got a feeling the Pacy wingers will win though. Pace is a great advantage at any level. Those fancy mids playing no.10 mostly get found out(Hoolahan, Taarabt, etc)... and apart from Charlie Adam i cant think of another set piece hog that had a breakout season in the EPL after the championship.
I've got my eye on Redmond.. Really hoping he comes in ?@under 5

Hmm that would be a good bit of research. I think A or C with a bit of B, although I'd probably prefer A over C.

I'm thinking Matt Ritchie could be a great option

highly doubt Redmond would come in under 5.

To answer your question though, I think the set piece hogs. Promoted sides tend to rely alot more on set pieces imo, and invariably the set piece takes tend to benefit. That said, they have to be reasonably strong set piece takers.

Snodgrass, Brady (when fit), Albrighton when played consistently.

all 3 play on the wing though.. though admittedly none of them are pacy 🙂 .. Gonna just go through some stats and make a list for fun though. got 3 hours off from work 🙂

I disagree. Snodgrass was very handy with his set pieces and occasional central role. Redmond was pretty average last time around as well and I'm not sure he's improved that much. I'm guessing you won't find a clear trend and it will be a mixed result. Also there is the slight problem of #10's often taking set pieces as well so maybe a combination of A, B, C improves the odds?

      1. Valar(Keith)
        • 14 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

Yup.. going through some stats and getting a lot of combos... for eg. Snodgrass played on the wing and took set pieces. Same with Albrighton and Brady. No.10's seem to get found out more often than not though and fall prey to formation shuffles in the EPL. Set piece takers and pacy wingers / a combo of both look like the go to mids.

Winger who is nowhere near penalties.. though he does take freekicks. I have a feeling he's gonna come in at an awkward price considering the hype around him. wouldn't be surprised by 5.5/6 though i too expect him to do well.

and i cant see kergomant or pitman playing much so wilson should be on penalties.. could be my go to cheap striker ahead of deeney. hence, why i'm trying to think of other options ahead of ritchie

Deeney might be moving to a new club so definitely worth avoiding. Wilson does look a good bet so it'd be interesting to see the prices.

Yeah a few clubs in the PL are looking at him because he'd be better value than Austin. Might be just a decoy to get Austin at a smaller price.

Yeah he takes all free kicks and no corners, but doesn't really have a chance at penalties.

But I think I may take a gamble on him as 4th mid, will probably come in at 5.5 with good fixtures, took the most shots/created the most chances last year in the Championship from bournemouth.

however, cech will take us to the next level, the way van der saar did when he joined united at the same age (33). our backline will be even better knowing that petr's behind them.

taking cech from chelsea will also land a psychological blow to mou and the blues.

After just one season in La Liga, Mario Mandzukic is on his way to Italy. I think Arsenal MUST buy one of Kondogbia or Schneiderlin, or this could be yet another non-title challenging season.

I agree Coquelin is really good, but he has not played 50 games a season ever yet in his career. With the back-up being Arteta/Flamini/Bielik, you'd expect him to 38 PL and 10+ CL games if he is not injured, can he keep it up?

Also being forced to play one of his backups for an extended period of time will not end well at all.

Even he won't, and he's much more of a forward. It's most taxing to play in CM, nobody does a whole season there, with CL included.

If they play Coquelin day-in day-out, he'll be injured by January and then they're in emergency to buy a new DM who'll be injured too when the big games are played in May (if Arsenal will get to play any).

Ticker handy but do wonder with some fixtures and how its calculated. Che home to Swansea should be a strong blue instead of white/grey. Costa and co. tend to shred the Swa defence.

Ticker evaluates only the opponent, not the team whose fixtures you're viewing. That said, they're still wrong about Swans.

I think it's usefulness is precisely in considering only the opponent value. You have other tools to evaluate the team you're viewing.

This is a classic debate. As Camp Mou says above, it is only intended to highlight swings in opposition difficulty, it isn't supposed to predict likely results. You have to layer your own opinion of whether a team will take advantage of the fixtures or not.

It could try to take both teams into account but that would end up with Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal having almost unbroken blue fixtures and the promoted teams having nothing but red.

I can see the arguments either way but that's the situation and I think it's here to stay 🙂

My ticker says it's a terrific fixture for a Chelsea CS (Swansea only scored 19 away goals last season, and Chelsea got 11 CSs at home), and only 'light blue/grey' for attacking returns (Swansea got more away CSs than home CSs last season)

I agree that Swans is overrated in the fixture. Probably paying too much attention to overall results - Swans had relatively many CS's last season, conceded only 27 goals away from home (just 4 more than Chelsea), and finished 8th in the away only table as well as in overall. Results like the one at Emirates make them look like a strong away team.

    Everybody needs to calm down.

Forget about 38 weeks of rotation.

Look at the first 4 gameweeks(after which we have a break). My TV was 100.9m after 4 weeks in 2014/15.

Then look at the next 4 weeks,up to GW 8, after which we have another break. My TV was 103.6m after 8 weeks in 2014/15.

Yes, I know it's TV and not a "true" indication of money available, but we will be able to afford the star players.

                  Rooney/Costa/8m

                  ...and had 2x4.5m keepers and the cash for a 5.5m + 5m def.(and no 4m bench fodder)

Oh, and this team had 0.5 in the bank in GW 1!

Of course - those three mids were all 9.0 and the forwards were both 10.5. If you wanted to put the players you mention above in there (Kun+Haz+Alexis+Ivan) then you'll need an extra:

                    2m in defence
                    4m in midfield
                    2.5m in attack

                    (approximately, obviously)

I don't think there will be much movement in price of Mata/Ramsey/Cesc. Alexis will hopefully be rested to give us a couple of GW's to build TV.

Ivan is the one most will chop I'm sure.

I WC in Gw 5. That only led to 0.3m increase from TV from Gw 4, but obv set me up on all the bandwagons and led to a 1.8m increase in TV between GW 5 - 7.

I'm sure the same effect can be achieved with some FT's and a hit or two.

I just don't appreciate being "rushed" into decisions when it comes to transfers.

Why not just get 3 reliable defenders to start every week from good teams? There might be value in the United and Spurs defence alongside a big hitter like Ivanovic/Koscielny.

Don't want to pay 7.5- 8m for Ivan as fixtures are a bit iffy. Kos injury prone. Happier to buy Haz, Caz and co and take the free cleanie bps when they come.

Hand on heart I don't have a layout in mind - I'll be hopelessly swayed by players I think are bargains (but aren't really) and by whatever bandwagons are trundling off cliffs.

If I had to take a guess I'd say it will be dull and template along the lines of:

        4.5, 4.5 (or maybe 5.0, 4.0)
        5.5, 5.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0
        10.0, 9.5, 9.0, 6.5, 5.0
        10.5, 9.0, 8.0

But obviously that's pure speculation and a fully fit and rested Aguero/Sanchez in GW1 would probably change everything.

It's a myth. Select 2 top class defenders and look for the best rotation with your remaining 3 defenders. Your remaing 3 defenders should cost you roughly 13m.

Well I'm on a staggering 30 points so far, but will plough on. I think given JWP's early substitution and Hoffman not being the striker I was led to believe he was I will do those two out for Kane and Leitner/Can. I think England will score, they have to. I think Germany are just about the safest options out there.

Beradi is another good option, but I already have Belotti and Portugal look a tough side to beat.

      1. Christina.
        • 14 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

I had Leitner. Part of the reason I WC. He didn't turn out to be so influential as I thought. Also subbed early, although that could be due to them having a red card.

Hindsight is a brilliant attribute. With Sweden getting a red card early on and had Belotti taking the penalty it could have made a big difference.

No biggy, Maccy D's is for gambling. That's the way the tournie is set up and that's the way Im playing it.

I'd hate stick or twist if it felt like the main competition of the season but as it's a bit of light-hearted fun, where we don't know too much about a very short competition, I quite like just having a go. Fortunately for me, the C change worked out - Volland -> Berardi.

Those who think Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo's talent is out of this world might now argue the point with even greater conviction after a new galaxy was named 'CR7'.

Astronomers working at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) have found what they say is the brightest galaxy yet discovered in the early universe.

They have named it 'Cosmic Redshift 7' - abbreviated to 'CR7' - as a means of measuring the celestial body's place along the timescale of the universe.
