Moving Target

Moving Target – Kieran Trippier

Mauricio Pochettino’s quest to shore up Tottenham’s leaky defence continued apace last week with the capture of Burnley right-back Kieran Trippier on a five-year deal.

The former Clarets defender – who carded the third-highest Fantasy Premier League score (118 points) among his team-mates last term – lauded the quality of Spurs’ squad, insisting he’ll do his utmost to forge a route into their starting XI:

“When I first heard that the club was interested I didn’t have to think twice because it’s such a big club and now I just can’t wait to get started. I’m very keen to perform in training every single day, do the best I can and hopefully get the nod from the gaffer. Whenever I get a chance, I want to do well for the other players, the staff and, of course, the fans. The squad here is unbelievable, there’s so much quality in the team and I’m really looking forward to starting work in pre-season and being a part of that. I’ll take every opportunity I get with both hands and hopefully play my part for everyone at the club.”

The History

The Bury-born Trippier learned his trade as part of Manchester City’s youth set-up from the age of nine. Having captained the Sky Blues’ triumphant reserve side in the 2007/08 FA Youth Cup, the rampaging right-back penned his first professional contract.

Trippier joined Championship outfit Barnsley on a one-month loan deal from February 2010 but only managed three appearances due to injury. The former England U21 international made the switch back to the South Yorkshire club the following summer, originally joining on a six-month loan deal that was extended to encompass the full campaign. Trippier recorded 41 appearances in all competitions throughout 2010/11, notching two goals and six assists, and claiming the Young Player of the Season award.

Burnley then sought to recruit Trippier on a season-long loan deal as a replacement for their outgoing right-back Tyrone Mears, before signing him permanently during the January transfer window. Trippier amassed four goals and six assists in 50 appearances in all competitions, and was named Burnley’s Player of the Year.

In the 2012/13 campaign, Trippier – who was honoured in the Championship Team of the Year – missed just one league clash (due to suspension) and tallied a hugely impressive 12 assists in 45 outings. The next season harvested a similarly head-turning attacking output, as Trippier chalked up two goals and 14 assists across 46 outings en route to Burnley’s promotion and another spot in the Championship Team of the Year.

During Burnley’s one season in the top-flight last term, Trippier played all but five minutes of his side’s 38 league fixtures, notching four assists in the process – only six defenders registered more.

The Prospects

In light of Kyle Walker’s ongoing injury issues (he missed 23 matches last season and clocked only 2300 minutes in the 2013/14 campaign) and DeAndre Yedlin’s inexperience, it’s no surprise that Spurs felt obliged to bolster their right-back options. Certainly, the fact that Trippier sat out just six league matches in the past four seasons must have factored into their transfer committee’s thinking as Pochettino hunted for a reliable option.

From a Fantasy perspective, Trippier’s exceptional creative output should render him a real prospect in Spurs’ rearguard if he can nail down a starting berth and the North London club can improve on a paltry haul of nine clean sheets. Astonishingly, Trippier attempted 341 crosses last term and executed 42 more successful crosses than the next best defender Leighton Baines (91 to 49), underlining his proclivity for hugging the touchline. Incidentally, Baines was the only defender to fashion more key passes (70) than Trippier (63), who outclassed the much-vaunted Branislav Ivanovic (36) in this regard.

Considering that Burnley were the lowest-scoring team last season with 28 goals, there’s certainly scope for Trippier to improve on his four assists. In fact, the Lilywhites’ latest recruit tallied more than double the volume of successful crosses than Tottenham’s full roster of defenders (43) last season, while he came close to trumping their collective key pass output (73), too. With regards to his direct competitors, Trippier’s average of 57 minutes per key pass was more than twice as quick as Walker’s 125.4 and far superior to Danny Rose, whose average of 92.2 was the most impressive of any Spurs defender.

Tottenham’s poor defensive record last season (only four sides were breached on more occasions) should ensure that their rearguard starters are pitched at similar price points next term, with a ceiling of 5.5 expected. Given that Jan Vertonghen has managed just one goal and an assist in the last two seasons, Trippier looks poised to challenge Rose as the primary route into Spurs’ rearguard.

Fantasy managers might elect to hold fire in the early stages of next season, though, given that Pochettino’s troops open with a trip to Old Trafford and then face tough match-ups against Stoke City, Everton and Manchester City in their subsequent six fixtures (STO, lei, EVE, sun, CRY, MCI).

As an aside, the arrival of Trippier and 22-year-old Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer places uncertainty over Eric Dier’s prospects next season. The versatile defender – who bagged two goals and three assists last term – enjoyed a security of starts in the second half of 2014/15, yet was primarily tasked with covering at right-back. Elsewhere, Tottenham’s recent business has pushed former MLS starlet Yedlin further down the pecking order, with some reports suggesting that he’s poised for a loan switch to another Premier League outfit. If priced below 5.0, Yedlin would certainly pique our interest by virtue of his attacking instincts, with the Canaries opening schedule also boosting his appeal should he find his way to Carrow Road.

He plays for Atletico. That's all you need to qualify for Chelsea these days.

Good player though, was Sociedad's best player for a couple of years and he deserved his step up.

Just popping on for 30 seconds to say:

Apparently Koeman wanted the Clyne issue resolved ASAP so that's why 12.5 was accepted, rather than holding out for 15m that the board wanted, as it could have gone on all summer. Sensible management by big Ron. Schneiderlin and Clyne are big losses but it makes no sense to drag out inevitable transfers.

      Fantasy Football daily hot topic

      U21 changes.

Which six players are you bringing in?

Anyone with a wildcard left and looking to do a wholesale full revamp?

Who are the key players to own from amongst the semi finalists.

This. I already have 3 players from Germany, Portugal and Denmark so no need to wildcard this round.

Three games left means template central. Most of us are in need of differentials. A couple of players scored well during qualifying but haven't done much so far, resulting in low ownership:

        - Ricardo Pereira
        - Philipp Hofmann (not a great player, it seems, but he knows where the net is)

Beyond those two, looks like hoping for defender goals/assists (other than from Vestergaard) might be the only way to rise the ranks. Denmark's Knudsen was suspended last game but should be back. He grabbed an assist in the first game.

John Guidetti is low-ish ownership right now but that probably won't last, especially since the extra £5m budget has made price no object.

Or you could punt on plucky Sweden shutting out Denmark. Loading up on the Swedish defence would be a very hipster move 😉

I think that's key its all about guessing the result. If you think Germany will score but not many against Portugal, who will fail to score then get an entire German back 4.

With Sweden and Denmark, if you think both will score then use the transfers to draft in the likes of Guidiette, Falk or Fischer.

Its all or nothing in tournament Fantasy Football I think.

So loading up with Sweden defenders would be awesomly hipster - if they keep a clean sheet then that's a huge rankings boost.

Yep. Unfortunately, it's so very hard to guess. I could see a Sweden cleanie but I could equally see a really high scoring game.

Do you actually need to do that? I thought I'd have to but the extra 5m budget means I can afford basically whoever I want.

I might actually save a FT for the final, although that probably won't be necessary either.

You could bench a 3.0 and 4.0 defender to buy you funds, but I agree with you - surely there's enough value in defences and midfield that you could afford Volland, Hoffman and Guidetti up front and still be fine elsewhere.

Thing is, now the game turns from a 2-match-day to a 1-match-day game. Completely different mindset now - I've enjoyed the "stick or twist" element so far, but now it's "all or nothing".

Still spreading my bets - got to bet on Denmark progressing, and Germany hiding off Portugal in a very low scoring game - 1-0 or 0-0 and penalties. Portugal have scored only twice in this tournament, and the Germans are more than capable.

Portugal won the last 3 games versus Germany in this category.

        2004 (group stage) - 1-0
        2006 (group stage) - 2-1
        2011 (friendly) - 4-2

I would go with 5 Portuguese and 6 Danish.

No manual subs for the Semi means you really should be able to get a full team out with the 6 subs you have and then save the WC for the final in case you get in 6 Germans and they lose.

A completely different strategy to previous years. One that I never saw coming. Ideally, we should get another DM, a keeper like Leno, and a top striker but i'll be happy if we just get a striker in and a decent Defensive coach/assistant coach in

This would be my England starting XI and reserves for ashes, Hales opening to continue attacking feel good nature from one day wave of confidence, lack of spinner holding down a end is a concern would start of with Ali at 6 if his spin is successfully targeted by Aussies would drop him for Rashid 2nd test and promote Butler and Stokes

        1 Cook, 2 Hales, 3 Bell, 4 Root, 5 Morgan,6 Ali, 7 Butler, 8 Stokes, 9 Broad

Yep Lyth and Ballance in reality will replace Hales and Morgan I'm that team, personally I wouldn't want platers that will dilly dally around for 4 hours to score 30, Hales and Morgan could take the game away quickly, I know we have Stokes and Butler late on for that but we need some agression up the order too

Not good enough. Not able to finish and poor defensive positioning. They carved out the better opportunities than Italy, but Italy took their chances, though the chances were gifted.

            Kind of a mix.
They aren't great (either skill or mentality- an English staple), they had a tough group, they stuck with the qualifiying squad instead of bringing in all the eligible players( of course the manager gets hammered for it now but I don't mind loyalty) and Southgate was never a great manager but seems pleasant enough to keep the side ticking over

It's a tough one really. Have the likes of Sterling and Co turned down opportunities to play with the u21s at any point? Or has it been Hodgson who has asked Southgate not to pick them previously? If it's the latter I'd have no problem in them being called up after not featuring in qualifying. If it's the former I wouldn't want them to play for the seniors again either.

Playing for your country should be a privilege at any level.

I'd have always called up the best I could, some of the players who could make a big difference to the U21's are not getting much game time in the full side, why not.

It also makes the U21 side a valid thing players should aspire to, which will have a knock on effect for the full side.

poor finishing for the most part. they had twice the number of attempts (20 to 11), but only 4 on target. Three good saves from bardi.

Ings finishing was poor yesterday. he really should have scored after about 10 minutes - he looked up prior to shooting, but still missed the target. he missed on a couple of other occasions that I remember.Kane should have scored a couple of times but for excellent goalkeeping.

Did you see his goal for Hoff last season where he finished into the open goal without looking at the ball? That's why he made this. I don't know if it's real probably is but I imagine it took a few attempts

I'm sadly quite pessimistic. A few things have got my hopes up - this signing, Lukaku hopefully finding consistency, but I fear for our solidity. Jagielka's, if not past it, then very nearly there, and we have no defensive cover. If we sign Ogbonna I'll feel better. I also worry about Martinez playing Cleverley and McCarthy as a midfield two. I'm a fan of Besic, he adds steel and may stop us getting overrun.

I'm primarily just not convinced by Martinez. very happy to be proved wrong though.

When I say pessimistic, I'm not thinking a relegation battle, but I think top 8 will be a big struggle. If we don't sign a keeper, and Martinez says we won't, then there's 5-10 points off our total immediately. Expect a minimum of 4-5 blunders from Howard/Robles over 38 games.

I think it's unlikely they will enforce that unless he's Barca first team quality within 3 years. That's going to be a tough ask for anyone to step up to.

Its a close one, if he is along with the likes of hopefully Firmino and other 50/50 mid-forw players, it could be so much fun to pick a midfield and we could see some different teams for once.

To Jay's response to us accepting less for Clyne to end the saga:

The Schneiderlin situation is completely different. I'd be very surprised if he went for less than the £24.2m asking price, which I believe was carefully negotiated with his agent. He's got more than a year left on his contract, unlike Clyne, and he's got several interested parties, whereas Liverpool seemed to be the only team dead set on Clyne. If we don't get what we want, or very very close, we won't sell him and everyone knows that.

Test cricket all the way for me, nothing else compares. 5 days of mental battles, one moment swinging the whole momentum, 25 days of England and Australia slugging it out. The 2005 Ashes is still the most I've ever enjoyed sport, you can't get that kind of spectacle in 20/20.

I fear this time though, we may be annihilated.
