Moving Target

Moving Target – Kieran Trippier

Mauricio Pochettino’s quest to shore up Tottenham’s leaky defence continued apace last week with the capture of Burnley right-back Kieran Trippier on a five-year deal.

The former Clarets defender – who carded the third-highest Fantasy Premier League score (118 points) among his team-mates last term – lauded the quality of Spurs’ squad, insisting he’ll do his utmost to forge a route into their starting XI:

“When I first heard that the club was interested I didn’t have to think twice because it’s such a big club and now I just can’t wait to get started. I’m very keen to perform in training every single day, do the best I can and hopefully get the nod from the gaffer. Whenever I get a chance, I want to do well for the other players, the staff and, of course, the fans. The squad here is unbelievable, there’s so much quality in the team and I’m really looking forward to starting work in pre-season and being a part of that. I’ll take every opportunity I get with both hands and hopefully play my part for everyone at the club.”

The History

The Bury-born Trippier learned his trade as part of Manchester City’s youth set-up from the age of nine. Having captained the Sky Blues’ triumphant reserve side in the 2007/08 FA Youth Cup, the rampaging right-back penned his first professional contract.

Trippier joined Championship outfit Barnsley on a one-month loan deal from February 2010 but only managed three appearances due to injury. The former England U21 international made the switch back to the South Yorkshire club the following summer, originally joining on a six-month loan deal that was extended to encompass the full campaign. Trippier recorded 41 appearances in all competitions throughout 2010/11, notching two goals and six assists, and claiming the Young Player of the Season award.

Burnley then sought to recruit Trippier on a season-long loan deal as a replacement for their outgoing right-back Tyrone Mears, before signing him permanently during the January transfer window. Trippier amassed four goals and six assists in 50 appearances in all competitions, and was named Burnley’s Player of the Year.

In the 2012/13 campaign, Trippier – who was honoured in the Championship Team of the Year – missed just one league clash (due to suspension) and tallied a hugely impressive 12 assists in 45 outings. The next season harvested a similarly head-turning attacking output, as Trippier chalked up two goals and 14 assists across 46 outings en route to Burnley’s promotion and another spot in the Championship Team of the Year.

During Burnley’s one season in the top-flight last term, Trippier played all but five minutes of his side’s 38 league fixtures, notching four assists in the process – only six defenders registered more.

The Prospects

In light of Kyle Walker’s ongoing injury issues (he missed 23 matches last season and clocked only 2300 minutes in the 2013/14 campaign) and DeAndre Yedlin’s inexperience, it’s no surprise that Spurs felt obliged to bolster their right-back options. Certainly, the fact that Trippier sat out just six league matches in the past four seasons must have factored into their transfer committee’s thinking as Pochettino hunted for a reliable option.

From a Fantasy perspective, Trippier’s exceptional creative output should render him a real prospect in Spurs’ rearguard if he can nail down a starting berth and the North London club can improve on a paltry haul of nine clean sheets. Astonishingly, Trippier attempted 341 crosses last term and executed 42 more successful crosses than the next best defender Leighton Baines (91 to 49), underlining his proclivity for hugging the touchline. Incidentally, Baines was the only defender to fashion more key passes (70) than Trippier (63), who outclassed the much-vaunted Branislav Ivanovic (36) in this regard.

Considering that Burnley were the lowest-scoring team last season with 28 goals, there’s certainly scope for Trippier to improve on his four assists. In fact, the Lilywhites’ latest recruit tallied more than double the volume of successful crosses than Tottenham’s full roster of defenders (43) last season, while he came close to trumping their collective key pass output (73), too. With regards to his direct competitors, Trippier’s average of 57 minutes per key pass was more than twice as quick as Walker’s 125.4 and far superior to Danny Rose, whose average of 92.2 was the most impressive of any Spurs defender.

Tottenham’s poor defensive record last season (only four sides were breached on more occasions) should ensure that their rearguard starters are pitched at similar price points next term, with a ceiling of 5.5 expected. Given that Jan Vertonghen has managed just one goal and an assist in the last two seasons, Trippier looks poised to challenge Rose as the primary route into Spurs’ rearguard.

Fantasy managers might elect to hold fire in the early stages of next season, though, given that Pochettino’s troops open with a trip to Old Trafford and then face tough match-ups against Stoke City, Everton and Manchester City in their subsequent six fixtures (STO, lei, EVE, sun, CRY, MCI).

As an aside, the arrival of Trippier and 22-year-old Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer places uncertainty over Eric Dier’s prospects next season. The versatile defender – who bagged two goals and three assists last term – enjoyed a security of starts in the second half of 2014/15, yet was primarily tasked with covering at right-back. Elsewhere, Tottenham’s recent business has pushed former MLS starlet Yedlin further down the pecking order, with some reports suggesting that he’s poised for a loan switch to another Premier League outfit. If priced below 5.0, Yedlin would certainly pique our interest by virtue of his attacking instincts, with the Canaries opening schedule also boosting his appeal should he find his way to Carrow Road.

        Ramos at 29 for a reported £35m.
        Schwein at 31 for £8m.
Deeply is a good signing though. But I feel if UTD carry on down this route, they'll be like City in 2 years with an ageing squad having to start again.

If they are to compete with them and Chelsea they have to spend big too. Only difference is they're funding it through sponsor & marketing revenue, due to a successful history, not rich investors.

Utd only have 5/6 players over the age of 27 so as a squad they are miles away from an ageing squad.

            What trophy?

Surely you can't mean the C1C? Is that what Liverpool have come to? A semi-final appearance they couldn't hope to win against a proper team and that counts as "close to a trophy"?

His point was valid. Liverpool reached 2 semi finals, United reached zero. Liverpool were much closer to winning a trophy than United. Don't be ignorant enough to say it's only the C1C or Fa Cup.

I'm not sure there was much structure to our business last season

I think it's different this season with LvG having had a full season and an actual pre-season with the team. LvG already commented on the unbalanced nature of the squad? Why target a player who will only add to that imbalance? He's already said he sat down with Woodward in January to discuss targets. That may have happened the year before (and probably did with Herrera and Shaw) but how much use was it when the guy who had those talks wasn't in the job come June?

Everyone, rightly I guess, already bemoaning FPL if they classify delafeo (spelling) as a forward howeve it could actually be a blessing, especially for the 3-5-2 gang. He could be benched for Everton tricky starting fixtures and then used when needed. If in for 5m striker (like before) he could be this seasons naismith(but remaining in the points)

These are big IFs but just saying him as a cheap forward could be decent.

That looks quite mediocre to be fair. Coutinho and Sturridge are the only ones with proven world class quality in the premier league. Can, Hendo, Firmino and Clyne have the potential too but that team is nowhere near Chelsea, City or even Arsenal

UTD fans or those who could offer some input. How excited are you to have Ramos for £35m?
Do you think he is worth that at 29 years old? How much do you think he will improve you defensively? If you get Lloris, do you think you've come out on top this transfer window?

Lot of money for his age but if he stays fit could get a few years in. Can't wait for the English refs to get stuck in, no way I'll be buying him! 😀

I don't think he was ever a target. It's come out and I think Utd chiefs have thought about it and just gone for it.

If they are willing to spend 35mi on a defender then why not on Hummels or Otamendi who have 7/8 years left in them not 2/3 at most from Ramos.

I think we'll be lucky to get Otamendi for that but I agree, I think this is more of an opportunistic signing ala Cantona rather than a pre-planned move

      £35m seems excessive but

      a) Ramos is basically a complete bar steward and we need one of them
      b) He's won everything there is to win and has vast experience, we have missed that
      c) Smalldini, Jones, McNair and Blackett can learn from him
      d) He can organise a defence, something no one in our defence (including DDG) can currently do Both Rio and Vida were excellent at this as was Blanc (though he was old), Stam and Bruce

I consider him one of the CBs in the world, and they should get at at least 4 good years from him. May be worth it. Great experience to help develop Smalling and the youngsters too. Experience is lacking the squad at the moment.

I personally don't care how much money is spent. The age structure of the players at the club is all over the place, most of the players that should be peaking around now simply haven't(Nani, Hernandez, Anderson/Cleverley) and we've been playing catch up ever since Fergie left.

£50m or whatever on Schweinsteiger & Sergio Ramos, two quality players almost as stop gaps while younger players develop isn't a bad route to go down. The youngsters are still there in Januzaj, Pereira, Depay, Wilson, Shaw, Jones(???) and even fringe players like Lingard, Blackett and McNair. Just need the time and to be moulded amongst quality.

If the relations with Ramos really are as sour as it is said, then they do it happily.

The rumour that Benitez is trying to get Koscielny to replace him is insisting in Spanish and French journals.

Numbers are generally _lower_ in French than in English league.

Two season average shots conceded (2012-2014) per game per team from several leagues:

            PL: 13.74
            Serie A: 13.35
            Bundesliga: 13.28
            Liga: 12.91
            Ligue1: 11.91.

This is a long term tendency, wouldn't change for, say last 5-6 seasons at least. I haven't yet counted these for last season, but you can check it yourself here:

            http://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/2/Seasons/4311/Stages/9155/TeamStatistics/England-Premier-League-2014-2015

            http://www.whoscored.com/Regions/74/Tournaments/22/Seasons/4279/Stages/9105/TeamStatistics/France-Ligue-1-2014-2015

Conversion rates are lower in England than elsewhere, though, I recall in France they were somewhat high last season, but don't know if these are long term tendencies or just fluctuations. What is true is that in French league they score significantly less goals on average than in other big leagues. So, I would not be particularly suspicious about the numbers for that reason.

However, what is a completely different fish is the team he would move to. West Ham is significantly weaker team in PL than the teams where Payet has played recently are in France, particularly Marseille last season (by far the most attacking team in France). They have less possession and attack less. While he could, as a creative player, actually improve this, it is to be suspected that he is going to be less in attack at Bilic's West Ham than he was in Bielsa's Marseille.

I agree, this is an excellent player they get, if they get him. That 3.9 chances created per 90 minutes looks even better to my eye. The total of 134 was by some margin the top of whole Europe, and that in a league where teams actually get less scoring chances than in others (although Bielsa's teams are extremely attacking, so Marseille was always going to create and concede a lot of chances).

And it's not just creativity, he can shoot too. Over last 5 seasons 46 goals and 43 assists in 125 matches worth of field time in league games, or NPGA90 0.712. That's definitely not bad for a midfielder. It is above the level Cesc Fabregas had in Spain, close to Costa, or, if you wish, better than what Hazard had in his last 3 seasons in France (that said, Hazard was significantly younger back then and there's no doubt he is the better and more talented player here, but just to give some perspective).

Hmm. There's a significant difference though. Cabaye, Payet and Rémy are all established, proven players, two of them in PL. And while I don't completely understand why you need another striker, Cabaye and Payet make complete sense in adding creativity that you lack. That all makes a difference to buying just everybody who's available for cheap money.

I'm sorry mate. Get in the gym and take it out on a punch bag to rage against the machine. My last break up got me a six pack. Being engaged has changed that completely.

Ah sorry to hear the update mate, probably for the best, I've been in a relationship where we've tried to give it another go and it just prolonged the pain, we both knew it was on its last legs and neither of us could relax. I thought I'd never really get over that one, and 5 years later I'm engaged, so plenty more fish in the sea is a cliche, but a true one.

I feel what you mean, i could sense an anxiety when i pressed things too much last night. That's no way to carry things forward. Cheers for being supportive bud. It's a bit strange to say that to a stranger but with a lot of my mates moved away, you don't really call them to talk about things like this.

Indeed, this place is great for things because you get a slightly detached view. I actually discovered this site when trying to rebuild my life a bit 3 years ago (had become a bit of a wreck-head through Uni and needed to calm down a bit), and it was fantastic because it allowed me somewhere to talk about things that were, well normal. It can be hard talking to people who are actively involved in an event.

Just dug out this post of mine from a couple of months ago:

Very well put, as always. It is a stirring place to be. I've only come back on since the season stopped and it's all calmed down, but it is wonderful saying hello to familiar faces on a regular basis again.

Ha, I would love to do that if I was held in such high regard.
One of my favourite things is a pretending game. Basically I speak Spanish but I am the most English looking person ever created. I used to sit and chat to Hispanic girls in clubs, let them talk to each other, sometimes about me, and at the end of the night whip out my fluent lingo and watch them go red with realisation.

        I used the opposite trick

I speak pretty good (though not totally fluent) Hebrew

Back when I was a student I used to use it to chat girls up. But of course I never actually said what I told them I said (it was usually ruder)

But of course given they didn't speak Hebrew, how did they know I was lying?

And they need to, because the poor performance of the English teams in Europa has been hurting the English co-efficient.

If if falls much more, only top 3 will be eligible for CL.

It was available last season too.

The EL is dead for English teams because (a) the financial rewards are slight compared to PL revenue, (b) we have a 20-team league, not 18, and (c) we have 2 domestic cups, not one.

In other leagues the EL represents a welcome extra source of revenue and extra fixtures they are happy to have. In England it doesn't. That's the long and short of it.

No, one proper cup competition only in most countries. Germany had a league cup played pre-season but abolished it completely in 2008.

When Campbell's goal was given offside I really tried to not laugh, honestly I did... Her poor face

I presume you mean 2006? I was baffled then working out who Lehmann was in the Istanbul final. I was gutted for Arsenal, you could see it was the last European hope of that great Invincibles-era side.

Sorry 2006, yes. They had some really good performances before the final, that era deserved a CL for sure...

He's a rare thing - a sweet footballer. Often sends support to people on Twitter, arranged a couple of tickets for fans who have had bad weeks etc, and was the only member of Ipswich's squad that commanded a fee last season - from Chippenham in 2012. Haven't seen much of him, but think he's a marauding full back by trade.

They'll need him to at that price

Kills Francis as an FPL option as well

£10k to £8M in 2 years. Great bit of business for us!

I bet Soton will be gutted they let him go for being too small (especially as he in now 6"5).

Almost time to service 2 teams of cricketers and their women again.
But a last question, how many yellows do we see Ramos getting this season?
    I reckon 13 with maybe 2 reds.

Yup, a bit of a no go area in fantasy football. On the other hand, he scores a lot of goals... High risk, high reward? Maybe.

Rupert has accepted a job starting on July 8th, forgetting that that's the day the Ashes start, and possibly the day FPL opens.

Don't even... Looking forward to it for years, but incredibly more so since this unbelievably sexy looking strike force has emerged. I don't know how to feel. I'll be on 3k a month but I'll lose so much from life. Won't even see my fiancée for months and that's not an exaggeration. We do have a wedding to pay for but I will barely see that gorgeous Hungarian.

The first Ashes Test, plus planning your first FPL draft, leaves no time for less important matters (loved ones).
