Pre-Season

Sleeper – Mesut Ozil

Having arrived at the Emirates for fee thought to be in the region of £42 million, it’s fair to say that Mesut Ozil’s career at Arsenal has fallen short of expectations. Furthermore, the German playmaker suffered a downturn in his Fantasy output in 2014/15, ensuring he emerges as the latest player to feature in our pre-season Sleeper series.

After making an encouraging start to his Arsenal career, scoring five goals and providing ten assists in 2013/14, expectations were high for the playmaker ahead of last summer.

The arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona, allied with Aaron Ramsey’s improved form, meant that the German international struggled to capture the attention of Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway.

Valued at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the same price as the Welshman, Ozil made a slow start to 2014/15. Rested for Gameweek 1 due to his exertions for Germany in the 2014 World Cup, he registered attacking points in just one of his first six appearances, bagging a goal, assist and full bonus in the 3-0 win against Aston Villa. In the last of those six outings against Chelsea, the former Real Madrid man suffered a partial knee ligament tear, which would rule him out until the New Year.

Ozil returned to action in Gameweek 21, coming as a late substitute against Stoke, before reclaiming a starting berth in the 5-0 win against Aston Villa two matches later. He repeated his 13-point haul from the reverse fixture, and would then find his best form of the season, scoring twice and grabbing four assists in his next seven appearances.

Unfortunately for Fantasy managers, Ozil’s season would end as it had started, with no attacking returns from his final seven matches. He finished with just 103 FPL points, to his name, down on the 137 he accumulated during his first year with the Gunners, although he did make four less appearances.

When comparing Arsenal’s midfielders, Ozil fared well in terms of creating chances, teeing up a team-mate every 27.8 minutes compared to Sanchez (39), Santi Cazorla (40.5) and Ramsey (44.9). Indeed, his frequency of key passes was quicker than any regular in the Premier League, with City’s David Silva the closest on 29.5 minutes.

Furthermore, Ozil’s goal conversion rate of 13.8%, which was more than Sanchez, Cazorla and Ramsey, is also impressive, though bearing in mind he fired an effort every 67.2 minutes, it highlights the fact that the German is more inclined to play in a team-mate rather than fire off a shot himself.

THE PROSPECTS

With so many options for Fantasy managers to choose from the Arsenal midfield, the pricing is going to the crucial as to how we view their assets. Sanchez is sure to be the most expensive, with a price tag of around 10.5 to 11.0 expected, but with the Chile international possibly set to miss the start of next season due to an extended rest following Copa America, the battle for our attention may well be between Ozil, Ramsey and Theo Walcott. While Cazorla has penalty duties and shares set-pieces, his role alongside Francis Coquelin in the double-pivot makes him a less attractive option, particularly as he is likely to be priced similarly to the aforementioned trio.

Walcott may well earn plenty of suitors after finishing the season strongly as a central striker but with Olivier Giroud also in the mix, his security of starts still remains an issue. Ramsey has spoken of his desire to play in a more central role after spending much of last season on the right flank but the versatile Welshman may find it tough to nail down a regular spot in his preferred position, with Ozil’s presence in the centre looking set to continue.

What plays into Ozil’s favour is that he should benefit from an extended summer break following the exertions of the World Cup last year. Speaking ahead of the FA Cup final, the German international admitted he felt tired at the beginning of last season:

“I had the World Cup after my first season here. It was such a great time but when I came back, the fitness coach said that even though I felt fit, the freshness was missing. I continued to give everything to help the team and that’s how I got my injury.”

Also, his playing time from last season, when fit, suggests he is less prone to rotation than others, completing the full 90 minutes in 16 of his 22 league appearances, and appearing only once as a substitute. If Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are both fit for the start of next season, along with any further new additions, there is going to be a real squeeze on the midfield slots, making Ozil’s relative security of starts all the more valuable, while the German also takes plenty of Arsenal’s set-pieces.

Having netted nine times in the 2012/13 campaign for Real Madrid, Ozil has shown he can score at the highest level. Last season, David Silva enjoyed his most prolific campaign in England, netting 12 league goals, and although there is less competition for places in the City midfield, that leap made by the Spaniard is certainly one that Ozil has the potential to rival. If he can add goals to his already high assist potential, he could become a viable alternative to Sanchez and provide an unlikely value route into the Gunners midfield.

What price do you think Jordan Henderson will come in at? Would you pick him up if he was 7m or less?

I agree, for me he plays a bit too deep to offer the reliable attacking returns I'd expect for 8M+

I think 8m would be a bit much. I only mention it because with Gerrard gone he won't have to act as his legs anymore, a lot more freedom to be the box to box player he is. I think his points hauls could increase significantly, but perhaps based on last season his price won't match that potential?

          I reckon he'll definitely be 7.5 or 8.0.

No idea, but he started at 6.0. I know this because I started with him.

If you've got any hopes of him being 6.5, I'd forget it. Zero chance.
7.0 is the absolute lowest he could be priced at imo.

Big chance of 8.0. Smaller chance of 7.0.

                  Firmino 8.0/8.5.

I could see Firmino being more just on perceived reputation, and perhaps even the fee paid for him. At 8.5 though he could be immense if he was playing off of a striker and got the kind of assist returns he's had before. Not much else in that Liverpool team to take a chance on early though, I think even Coutinho could struggle to notch up worthwhile points for a few weeks.

He finished at 6.6 last year and I think people are overestimating his price for some reason. I don't think he should be over 7. He didn't do enough to be priced equal to say Mane who would be around 8.

I think Henderson is an awkward one this year, considering I think Benteke will probably take the set peice duty from him, and I think Coutinho could be set for a scorcher & Firmino playing off of the Big man could be trouble.

Liverpool did let me down badly last year, though

I think given the signs point to the readoption of the pressing system his position could be very good, I think he'd play around the same area as Milner but he's shown a lot of potential to do well from deeper.

I can see Firmino being a bit overpriced though, and it remains to be seen whether he'll hit the ground running or not. Though the same could be said of Henderson's potential jump to the 'next level'.

I admit he's a risk but I like the potential, the rest of my mid will be boring and safe.

I think Henderson is a risk, if Sterling leaves I'm not sure who will win penalties and fee kicks should be deemed as a bonus. Can see a lot of frustrated owners selling at the wrong times.

Depends on what they think he'll get I guess. If they use the 2013/2014 season as something to go on, he'll be priced high. Last season he didn't do as well so maybe lower the price there. One to watch.

Aye, and I have some memory of him really struggling to adapt to Germany in his first season (though he came from a rubbish team in Brazil) so I don't expect anything like that, but it is conceivable that the first few weeks may involve a breaking in phase.

Why all the sudden love for 442 and 433 ?

Are people really going with that formation, based on an article by a poster who has never even had a finish in the top 10k?

Just because a dead team can be made showing a system with 4 at the back is marvelous, dosent make it so. It lacks the plug and play flexibility of a 343 , and is made all the more difficult by the unpredictable nature of defencpsive returns

    343 is best by test

    Depay last season:

22 goals and 6 assists in 30 appearances in the Eredivisie. A great goal scoring return for a winger, but I would be amazed if he got remotely near that level of goal scoring next season. What worries me, from the FPL aspect, is that he doesn't seem to have assists to fall back on. Not convinced he'll dominate freekicks either.

Think I shall wait and see how Memphis goes.

Can't say I've watched the Eredivisie but was he the major outlet for his team? Generally what are his creative skills like anyway? If he was the go to guy so to speak maybe that would explain the lack of assists, that's what I'm getting at. Regardless its a step up so form would be expected to drop, no one would blame him for that.

I agree, but just in terms of quality you'd have to consider him at some price if he could nail down a spot. Though of course not premium, or even lesser premium perhaps.

I reckon it is just the stats can be a bit hit and miss.

I am not rubbishing the division, just pointing out that statistics from it are largely irrelevent to FPL

Plenty of players' stats have been relevant, just off the top my head, Janmaat, Chadli, Tadic & Eriksen, as well as Suarez.

Depays stats have some relevance as would those of Willems of Wijnaldum if they joined the PL

Yes, he was a deadly attacking weapon, striking up a great left flank partnership with Jetro Willems.

He's not a traditional winger though, he's an inside forward.

That is something I was thinking on a bit as well, certainly was one of their go to guys so it might explain it. Suppose, to be fair, he registered 6 assists (5 according to Squawka) but he did contribute a further 55 key passes so perhaps he is a bit better creatively than the assist stats show. But with a pass completion of just 75% I think he'll have quite an adjustment period.

        1. Licky
          • 11 Years

A lesser pass completion rate has two sides to it though, its sure to drop again, but it could well be encouraging depending on the kind of passes he was attempting if you get what I mean.

Yeah, that is true, the trouble with stats. I don't like when they add crosses into it, I never really mind someone who hits a number of good crosses that don't happen to lead to anything.

I think you might be right, things change of course and I am happy with the signing, just trying to sift about a possibly decent new boy to consider.

That is true as well. Though if LVG sticks ADM in the CM where he should then Memphis will only have Young to compete with, still tough given Young's improvement but he should get time if that is the case.

        Agree anyway, monitor.

Don't think there's much chance of LVG playing Di Maria in midfield, he just isn't the type of CM he likes.

My only hope is a 4-3-3 with ADM Schneiderlin (assumption) Herrera in the middle 3.

I think it could work, but I accept you may well be right.

Maybe but I think Mata/Rooney are more likely to be pushed into that position than ADM.

Things will become clearer when we see who United sign I guess.

What do people think of Rooney for GW1 onwards. He will play striker and is well rested. As we cannot get Kun due to copa, Costa is always tricky and I personally think quite useless, it seems that Rooney and maybe kane are the key men upfront? Thoughts?

He's in my plans, definitely. Absolutely nailed on, bit of a sleeper in that his points were artificially low last year due to being played out of position, will definitely be played in attack unless United are hit by an unbelievable injury crisis of some kind and has good fixtures...

Safe pick to start with, at least until Aguero is up and running.

I may go with Costa, early season he was immense but faded toward the end. Tip of the spear of the champions.

I also want a player as close to Aguero's price as possible so I don't have to perform major surgery on my team to get him in.

People see Rooney as a fantasy failure last, the reality was different.
He played 16 times for my team this season with an average points per game of over 7

the reason for this is people kept hold of him whilst he was playing in midfield and basically doing nothing

You're right on Emnes, as he doesn't even play the striker role. Pretty sure whenever Emnes has got on the pitch for Swansea he's been out wide or off the striker...

6ft1 or something like that and is okay, 10 goals in Portugal last season. Think he's 3rd choice (assuming Emnes plays elsewhere) but Ayew is my concern.

    http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2013/sep/03/transfer-window-premier-league-club

Have just taken a look at premier league teams transfers in for the 2013 season. What is striking is just how many of the foreeign imports turned out to be utterly useless. Only a couple of teams appear to have bought in really good players.

Swansea were by far the best with their dealings in the transfer market while Liverpool and Sunderland were absolutely shocking

I won't hide my disappointment, I think United should have tried to get Clyne and be done with it. Darmian has a wealth of clubs after him, and Everton will be like vipers if they try to steal Seamus. I would like if one of them signed, but Clyne for £12.5m is great business.

Rodgers is back to annoying me again. Planning to give back Manquillo, Skrtel 3 year contract and being stubborn on the DM situation.

Manquillo is so solid defensively, raw going forward. He would be brilliant back up to Clyne and balances a shaken defence as he can play LB. Don't like the idea of 2 attacking full backs.

Skrtel is so overrated. He's OK..in and around average. People think he's better than he is because of his 'warrior' tag, being a long servant to Pool and because he scores goals.

BR should just go with Ilori. He was brilliant at the U21's. Tall, strong, quick, ball playing CB.

Clyne - Ilori - Sakho - Manquillo. With the likes of Wisdom, Lovren (I know) and Moreno in reserve.

Isn't Manquillo extremely lazy? Never drops back enough, a bit like Monsieur Johnson. Not sure about his attitude too. I think Ilori and Sakho in the heart of defense would be excellent though, the pace would allow for a much higher line which would compliment the press perfectly if that is what we are looking for. As for DM, the Brodge just doesn't care for it I guess. 🙄

Manquillo reminds me of a young Juanfran/Azpi. Raw going forward, but adaptable and solid defensively. Ilori needs his chance, he looks really good. Can't believe people still think Skrtel should be first choice at the club. Ilori-Sakho with a DM in front has the makes of a good defence.

Oh yes. I think he's a tad lazy too if I'm honest. He's a better RB than people give him credit for. Good defensively, albeit he's non existent going forward.

Which is odd, because my criticism of La Liga FBs has been they go forward too much.

If Pool get themselves a really top notch DM this stuff will be nearly a second thought, or at least it would help a lot to cover Clyne and Moreno bombing forward.

Dont agree about Manquillo being so solid defensively. He seemed fairly good with potential and would have been a decent back up for Clyne. You have Manquillo and Moreno the wrong way round

      1. goriuanx
        • 13 Years

I would keep him as back up though. I just prefer one attacking full back and one defensive one. Clyne and Moreno is too much. Clyne and Manquillo would be a Tesco value version of Ivanovic and Azpi.

No point keep Manquillo here, BR already showed that he doesn't fancy him.

We overplayed that "ball playing CB" card to much nowadays, for Liverpool we really need defender that can defend first than worry about how he does with ball at his feet.

      1. Licky
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

... but if we desire to play a far more offensive pressing game then a 'ball playing' CB is a must, a real necessity. A lot of signs are pointing to that as our preferred 'system'.

        1. Van Klinkert Delarosa
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

It's a necessity, but we don't have to be occupied by 2/3 ball playing CB at times, one should always be old school defender imo like Skrtel, unless Ilori can muscled up like Sakho - I don't see why should we drop Skrtel.

But saying that I don't mind seeing Ilori start alongside Skrtel.

          1. Licky
            • 11 Years
            8 years, 9 months ago

Skrtel should be dropped due to his positional mishaps, he'll ruin the defensive line with his lack of communication, it'll get pulled everywhere and allow gaps to be exploited and he'll play players onside. There's no reason why a CB can be both and I'd have faith in what Ilori and Sakho could do. Skrtel is far too much of risk to play if we set up with a pressing system.

To be honest all our defenders are awkward in positioning. And our CB were not really vocal (bar maybe Toure), since Carra left - no commanding figure in there.

BR will be gone though, whether it's by Christmas or next summer.

Ilori can defend as well though. He's proven that at Portugal, Bordeaux and Sporting. Skrtel was good, he's regressed massively.

        1. Licky
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

I think the regression is down to not playing a deep back four, and to a certain degree Agger who managed to keep him in check, though at great cost to his personal quality. :/ He really get caught out when we play more expansive football.

It's looks like the owner are really backing him at the moment.

Big fan of Ilori myself, I think he's ready to be number 3rd / 4th behind Skrtel - Sakho (I expect this duo will be our starting CB next season).

I remember, the first time I was here it was at the starting of 2012-13 season...
A man was writing post after post about when fpl is going to open... And an analysis taking the past opening dates of fpl.into account... I was astonished and quite impressed that this community has a person who is related to Fpl towers... And knows in n out of the releasing times n all...

I remember to have asked him n others one question "who are you, does he work for the fpl towers?" I got answer as "he is a legend!"

Now I know who he is... He is Daniel, I know he doesn't work for the fpl towers or he really doesn't know the release date of fpl but to this date I am astonished regarding his never-ending enthusiasm for fpl release and fpl as a whole!

Which of the players from these top 5 teams do you think are nailed-on (given the current states of the teams).

Chelsea - Courtois, Ivanovic, Terry, Azpilicueta, Matic, Fabregas, Hazard, Costa.
Arsenal - Cech, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Monreal, Coquelin, Ozil, Sanchez*.
City - Hart, Zabaleta*, Mangala, Kompany, Fernandinho, Yaya, Silva, Aguero*.
United - Valdes, Smalling, Herrera, Rooney.
Liverpool - Mignolet, Clyne, Sakho, Moreno, Henderson, Milner, Coutinho*, Firmino*

I'd say there are a lot less options than other years, especially given the states of the United and the Liverpool team - I'd say mid-table clubs will be a priority come GW1 team selection.

Liverpool have some interesting fixtures. The first four home games are

    Bournmouth
    W ham
    Norwich
    Villa

Sandwiiched between those freat fixtures are trips to

    Stoke
    Arsenal
    Man u

Question: Are the great home fixtures enough compensation for the poor away ones? There a very real possibility of some decent hauls from those home matches. Difficult to pinpoint an obvious captain choice, but there is certainly potential there

I dont like planned transfers, but one option could be to start the season without pool cover, then bring in whoever is their flavour of the week before the Bournmouth game, that would give 4 great home fixtures and only two away matches

Those home fixture look too good to be totally ignored

You have to think that the promoted teams will start full of energy and confidence as they often do and make it tough, West Ham also buoyed by the new manager etc.

given that Liverpool have really struggled for goals since Suarez and Studge i would say its def worth a wait for one game to see if they have a plan to address the goal issue.

Milner probably the safest choice at this stage (price dependent of course)
