The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Man United

After finishing seventh under former manager David Moyes in the previous campaign, 2014/15 was a transitional one for Man United. New boss Louis van Gaal splashed the cash on the likes of Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, in addition to drafting in Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan, yet despite having no European fixtures to concern themselves with, the Old Trafford outfit struggled for cohesion in the Dutchman’s first year at the helm.

Certainly, in front of their own fans, United were a real force to be reckoned with. Van Gaal’s side scored 41 home goals – a tally bettered only by neighbours City (44) – yet on the road, they were a different prospect altogether and netted just 21 times, only two more than relegated QPR.

Early indications from the medical services of the Argentine national team suggest that Di Maria may be out for a month with torn fibres in the femoral biceps of his left thigh.

Damn, looks very unlikely he'll play against Spurs now.

Same. Great starting 3 fixtures for attacking returns. And only one regularly starting midfielder had a higher involvement in his team's goals last season, Sadio Mane (45% & 50% respectively). I'm expecting Di Maria to have a great season, if he can stay fit.

There's always some idiots and it won't take many sales for each price drop with such low ownership. Although I don't think there will be enough said idiots.

How are people going plan for week 3?
With Aguero and Sanchez likely to miss opening games, how does one plan to retrieve them later with as little hurt as possible?
I think the top FPL managers will show a very low ownership on them.

Very very lose plan is maybe start with Rooney and Costa. Decide on which one of these to swap for Aguero. Prob Rooney.

Rooney top of my wishlist anyway. Could mean early use of a wildcard. we will all be looking for a mil at least for Aguero, so housekeeping will be required.

Not too worried with the fixtures, just need good captain options for gws 1 and 2, eg Costa, Haz, Silva. Be happy for Kun and Alexis to drop in price, then purchase in good time.

I'm considering planning an early WC.

An earlier start to the season means earlier pricing, and hence more opportunity for bargains to emerge through signings.

Also, it may take key players like Aguero, Sanchez & Di Maria time to recover from the Copa America, even if they return for GW1.

Chelsea and City's first 3 fixtures don't look enticing for attacking returns, so a GW4 WC could be used to bring in their assets.

      1. Captain Peacock

I feel like you're playing with fire on that last point. Both of those teams have the ammunition to destroy practically any opposition if they're in form.

I thought players perform less after long WC runs?

And form drops towards the end of seasons when for those that have played most games, so playing frequently can reduce performance over time?

I'd love to see someone look into this.

I can't see them scoring more than Arsenal and United assets over that period. Chelsea aren't exactly a high scoring team. And City's fixtures...

wba - Pulis with a pre-season will likely make West Brom even tougher to break down.
CHE - Mourinho likely to park
eve - Everton strong at home, 8 CSs at home last season, compared to 2 away.

I will NOT start with a Southampton defender this year. They ended last season terribly with Schneiderlin out. I will buy a defender from whatever club buys him. He was the key to clean sheets at Southampton. I'd prefer to see him at Arsenal, but a Man U defender will have to do.

Whichever team he goes to should tighten up. I'm looking at an Arsenal already. I'd consider a United if he goes there.

They had incompetent GKs at the time and ended the season on a high number of away games - as long as they're playing at home then they have a good chance for a cleanie imo, especially with Stekelenburg now (not amazing but much better than Davis/Gazza).

I think you've failed to grasp what Southampton's success is about. We have, and will never be, a one man team. Yes, he is our best player and yes, we will struggle to replace him but he is far from the only reason we keep clean sheets. The whole team struggled at the end of the season due to a lack of squad depth and substandard goalkeeping arising from injury. I would wait to see what happens to our squad over pre-season. 😀 As for Schneiderlin, he's not a one man band - I think United need more than him to become rock solid.

He has his merits but far too often he is the nearest defender to the scoring forward. Quite high minutes but only 6 CS and only 4 of his appearances were for less than 60 mins. 🙂

Southampton's drop in clean sheets towards the end of the season was down to many factors, including the absence of Schneiderlin, Forster's injury, playing teams that had a lot more to play for... I think their defenders still be a good source of FPL points if they can get Alderweireld back and get a decent Schneiderlin replacement, however I don't expect them to get as many clean sheets as they did last season.

I wouldn't agree, but then we'll only find out when PL kicks off. Everyone thought Everton is a good choice for defence last year with WC star Howard in the goal, and we all know where did they finish. I would go for Soton goalkeeper + defender. And that might not work. We'll see. I think Stakelenburg can shine, he was very good 2-3 years ago, probably Kuman has a trust in him, also that guy Soares could be next Clyne. Saints started two last seasons perfectly, why not continiue, especially with arguably one of the best first 6 fixtures. Again it's about tactics, I don't want cheap defenders, I want defenders with clean sheets and attacking potential.

I captained Baines when he scored 15:) and then was lucky to dump him. Ok, I give up, I am bad in making a point. All I want to say - I am really surprised seeing people not consider Sotons defence.

Cause Spurs can't defend I'm guessing.

Don't see the appeal at all for 5.5.

Probably going to be expensive, would go for Cech instead.

Why will Lloris be more expensive than Czech? I would think it depends on TFr news and when. Lloris for me if he goes to Man U late.

        1. Holmes
          • 10 Years

Not more than Cech, probably same price. And in that case, I would go for Cech.

We are on the same page for sure. But is it not easier to have a Man U keeper than an Arsenal one. Every time I do a draft side I take out Czech cause it limits my choice on other Arsenal players. I like Kosi for example and 2 of my 3 choices I don't want to be defenders.

I would normally say this. But with Myhill being such a strong option, if at 4.5, then a second playing keeper would be necessary to take advantage of him.

Palace confirm they are trying to sign Cabaye....

“There’s one we would definitely like to do,” Parish said on the club's interest in Cabaye.

“It would be a massive thing for the club obviously. He’s a seasoned international, so it’s definitely one we are working on.”

Would be a top signing and great FPL prospect even if he plays deep due to set-pieces - ideally though he'd be playing as a number 10.

        He'll do a Cesc playing a bit of both...but a lot cheaper.

Yeap I was thinking the Cesc role too because of the trio they have in attacking mid (Bolasie, Zaha, Puncheon).

When he does play further back it's more box to box...he still get's a few shots off, along with his set piece duties.

Me too. I think I will this season anyway. He'll either be a Number 10 or the main striker from the off. Plus as we know is reliable. the clincher though is ManU's good early start in comparison to say ManC and Chelsea. Spurs at home and Villa away have goals written all over them.

Raymond Domenech has urged Hugo Lloris to leave Tottenham in order to play in the Champions League, but insists the Frenchman should reject a move to Manchester United.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a summer bid for Lloris, with David de Gea having told the club of his desire to move to Real Madrid.

The Spurs goalkeeper has repeatedly evaded questions on a potential move to Old Trafford, but former France coach Domenech insists that such a transfer would represent a sideways step for his compatriot, and says that he should only leave White Hart Lane to join a top-three Premier League side or a major club abroad.

"I have no decision to take for him, but in my opinion he has to play in Chelsea, Arsenal, or Manchester City, to play in the European Cup," he is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

"Tottenham is a big club – it is not the biggest. Manchester United qualified for the Champions League, but I can't see really the difference with Tottenham.

"For me, it's Chelsea, Arsenal, or Manchester City. Because I think Manchester United is no more a big club, in England, for me. I think like that.

"I think Arsenal will be every time a big club, Chelsea also – City is becoming a big club – but I think United is with Tottenham, with the other clubs. Not one of the biggest clubs, so there's no difference.

"For me, he's a great goalkeeper so he needs to be in the best English club, or French, or Italian, or German."

If Lloris goes to Man U after prices are done:
Tell me if my budget is out:
    Lloris 5.5
    A N other 4.0
    Morgan 4.5
    PVA 4.5
    Kosi 6
    Bertrand 6
    An Other 4
    Mane 8
    Caz 9
    Hazard 11.5
    Silva 10
    A N Other 4.5
    Rooney 10
    Sakho 7
    Deeney 6
    TOTAL 100.5
Yoshid and Calum Wilson on watchlist if I can't meet the prices.

Rough outline, I just can't wait till the launch 😛

    Goalkeepers: Schmeichel/Adrian
    5/5.5 = 10.5
    Defenders: MUN/ARS/LEI/WHA/4.0
    5.5/5.5/4.5/5/4 = 24.0
    Mid: Eriksen/Cazorla/Fabregas/Silva/4.5
    8.5/9/9.5/10.5/4.5 = 42.0
    For: Rooney/Diouf/Ings
    10/7/6.5 = 23.5

This is off if Ings is somehow nailed on the first few weeks. Alternatives for him though are Sakho and Deeney.

    Cheaper alts: Sig, Ritchie

Thoughts on how to improve? Or free up 2.5 for Aguero GW3 or 4?
    Thx so much guys

      My posts have been similar.
      Far too much on Goalkeepers.
      Ings will be 7.5 IMO.
You need a powerhouse for captain.
      My problem too getting Kun.

Yeah, u gave me the idea 🙂
I need to find a way for Costa/Haz in there somewhere.
        Maybe Fab -> Haz
        and Caz -> Sig?

dunno, I think I'll wait till prices now 😛

GKs to expensive, a little too much in mid and not enough up top. imo

My ideal price template is bit like-

      4.5/4.0
      6.0/ 5.0/ 4.5/ 4.5/ 4.0
      11.0/ 10.0/ 7.5/ 5.5/ 4.5
      12.0/ 11.0/ 6.0

6 out of 7 of Cazorla's goals were from penalties. Was he fortunate, or is it a result of Arsenal's style of play?

Also, what price do you think he'll come in at?

Arsenal are definitely liable to win more penalties because of their style, but what they do for the remainder of the transfer window is a big question mark. If they get a central midfielder then Cazorla's place will be very much under threat (it arguably is already).

I agree. I think Wenger will either play him as last year or sell him to Atletico. But I do think Wenger wiil stick with what was a very successful season in midfield

Will Arteta not be back or I'm guessing with the Le Coq, he's not even first choice. When he does get gametime I imagine he will be on pens which could be frustrating?

Are you sure about the Soton DRG, Doos? seems a bit high to me - is it bringing in to account the Europa factor?

It is high, on account of the fact that they had a brilliant Season. No, none of the teams' Europa commitments are factored in. Or CL commitments, come to that.

I suppose if it appears early on that it's innacurate, it will be adjusted. It's just the values being higher than Liverpool's doesn't sit well with me - after Liverpool beat them twice and finished above them last year.

Doesn't seem to sit well with GB, either. They say great minds think alike - although not sure that saying has anything to do with me or GB.

That is true. But Liverpool managed to comprehensively cock up other matches last year - and will do so again this year, as their fans, their manager and their defence are all out of sync.

Yeah, I may not start with one of their defenders. I can only see 1 CS in the first 4.

Regarding your SOT figure though, Southampton scored 37 goals at home last season, and only 17 away. So you may want to improve the ratings for a SOT fixture imo. They're much weaker away.

Many more factors than goals scored are involved. Goals against, for a start.

You don't have separate ratings for 'Clean Sheet Potential' and 'Attacking Potential' then? I see them as different entities.

No. That is overthinking, imo. Just HOME and away. Keep it simple, is my motto. Fixtures need a tag, but must not be allowed undue importance.

Also, "Clean Sheets Potential" is a chimera. All one can do, is note defensive prowess. After that, it is all in the lap of the Gods.

Look at Chelski. Hugely underwhelming in the clean sheet department last Season, compared to their potential.
