Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Sunday

Romelu Lukaku bags a hat-trick as Everton breeze past Hearts. Theo Walcott boosts his Fantasy stock as he snatches Arsenal’s winner against Wolfsburg, Newcastle new boy Georginio Wijnaldum nets again, whilst Palace taste defeat at the hands of Sporting Lisbon. Here are the notes from Sunday’s pre-season encounters…

Arsenal 1 Wolfsburg 0

Arsene Wenger made ten changes to the XI that swept aside Lyon 6-0 on Saturday, with only Mesut Ozil retaining his place. This saw Petr Cech handed his home debut between the posts, with a back-four of Hector Bellerin, Gabriel, Calum Chambers and Nacho Monreal. Mikel Arteta and Santi Cazorla were stationed in the double-pivot, whilst Jack Wilshere, Ozil and Jeff Reine-Adelaide tucked in behind lone frontman, Theo Walcott.

Reine-Adelaide supplied the pass for the only goal of the match, as Walcott strengthened his claim for a central berth by slotting home just five minutes after the break. Wenger made five alterations over the course of the second period, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier Giroud afforded further minutes off the bench.

Post-match, the Gunners boss had plenty to say over Walcott’s performance in an interview with the club’s official website:

“Another goal for Theo and I’m not surprised by that because I played him through the middle. I’ve always said that he’s a goalscorer because he has the movement, he has the timing of the run, the speed for the finishing, and he has an eye for taking his chances at the right moments. When he gets into these positions he finishes well. Yesterday he nearly scored when he came on as a substitute, today he scored. I believe that Theo will score goals. In his ideal world he would like to play with a strong guy next to him, a player who is very strong physically, and he play off him. We have so many offensive players which makes that very difficult to combine all of them together.”

Wenger’s line-up for the Community Shield on Sunday will clearly give us the clearest indication on his thinking ahead of the season opener against West Ham. Walcott appears to be in the driving seat to claim the striker’s role, leaving Olivier Giroud potentially frozen out to the bench in a repeat of Arsenal’s previous Wembley appearance for the FA Cup final. While Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla remain clear early midfield targets in the light of Alexis Sanchez’s expected Gameweek 1 absence, Walcott has emerged as potentially the most explosive option. He has currently claimed 7.8 ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Hearts 1 Everton 3

A Romelu Lukaku hat-trick steered Everton to victory at Tynecastle as the muscular Belgian showed poise from the spot to convert two penalties. Gareth Barry was fouled in the box to allow Lukaku to strike home his first goal, while Seamus Coleman’s assist then set up the striker for his second to hand Everton the lead. Kevin Mirallas was then brought down to allow his compatriot to complete his hat-trick.

Significantly, the 3-1 victory marked the first pre-season appearance for Leighton Baines – confirming the fact that Lukaku is now ahead of the left-back in the pecking order for spot kicks.

Baines took his place in a first-choice back four that was made up of Coleman, John Stones and Phil Jagielka playing in front of Joel Robles in goal. Roberto Martinez deployed his side in an attacking 4-3-3, anchoring the midfield with Barry, James McCarthy and Leon Osman. An attacking trio of Lukaku and Mirallas, flanking Arouna Kone through the middle, provided the threat.

The likes of Tom Cleverley and Ross Barkley were reduced to appearances from the bench. Bryan Oviedo was also amongst one of the subs introduced in the second period as he made his belated return from injury.

It remains to be seen if Martinez maintains the new attacking 4-3-3 setup, although post-match the Everton boss was clearly enthused by his side’s display…

“Going forward we looked a threat, but then we always kept a good balance and only a lapse in concentration early saw us concede from a dead ball situation. Apart from that I thought we kept our defensive duties to a good level.”

Sporting Lisbon 2 Crystal Palace 0

The Eagles ended the inaugural Cape Town Cup with a 2-0 reverse at the hands of Sporting Lisbon. Alan Pardew again kept faith with the 4-2-3-1 setup but shuffled his pack following the 4-0 win over Supersport United two days ago.

Alex McCarthy made his Palace debut in goal following his move from QPR; he played behind a back four made up of Joel Ward, Scott Dann, Damien Delaney and Pape Souare. James McArthur and Johan Cabaye were deployed in the double pivot, with Jason Puncheon, Jordan Mutch and Dwight Gayle in the attacking three, supporting Glenn Murray up front.

Pardew was again without Yannick Bolasie through injury, while Marouane Chamakh was also absent and Wilfried Zaha was limited to a cameo role from the bench following a recent knock. Post-match, the Palace boss bemoaned the lack of creativity from wide areas…

“We lacked a little bit of width today – Zaha hasn’t been fit and only trained for one day this pre-season so that was his first 10 minutes of action and Bolasie was injured in training on Thursday and it’s a shame he wasn’t involved because we probably missed a little bit of his x-factor.”

This would suggest that we’ll see a different attacking three take to the field against Fulham on Saturday, in a line-up that is most likely to reflect the teamsheet at Norwich on the opening day.

Sheffield United 2 Newcastle 2

Steve McClaren continued with a 4-2-3-1 formation for the trip to Bramall Lane. A back-four of Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor and Massadio Haidara sat in front of Tim Krul, with Jack Colback and Vurnon Anita stationed in the double-pivot. Further up the field, Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum and Ayoze Perez took up the attacking midfield spots behind Papiss Cisse, with new signing Aleksandar Mitrovic yet to be involved.

Wijnaldum (7.0 in FPL) netted his second goal in as many appearances for the Magpies, courtesy of a Papiss Cisse pass, before Siem de Jong – one of seven second-half substitutes – notched his side’s second after slotting home a flick-on from a Colback corner. Although Steven Taylor (4.0 in FPL) started at centre-half again, McClaren is clearly determined to strengthen at the back – the Magpies have agreed a deal for Anderlecht centre-half Chancel Mbemba, with the FA expected to confirm the transfer on Thursday.

The Newcastle boss also played down rumours of a move away for Fabricio Coloccini. The Argentine has yet to play a part in pre-season due to injury and has been linked with a move to Palace but McClaren is clearly keen to keep him:

“We want him playing. He has got a little niggle, which he has every season and that has to be taken care of. He is working on conditioning. In America he was out most of the time because of the surface in the last game. We are still working and have time. He needs to have a good week and needs to play Saturday. We need him in the team. I have come in and they have told me to assess the squad. Colo has come in and I have been delighted with his attitude and the way he is around the place. That’s great – but we need him on the field. I looked at Coloccini in training and he’s one of our best players. I know things were difficult last season but I want him out on the field in a Newcastle shirt. He’s great for the team.”

After the match, new signing Wijnaldum admitted he’s still suffering from jet lag after arriving late to the club’s tour of the US before returning to the UK just a few days later:

“It is always hard to play after a flight of 10 hours but what is harder is that a lot of players still live in the time that they have in America, so most of the time I wake up at four o’clock and I can’t sleep any more – today I had the same problem. I am always pleased to score goals and always happy if I make goals. I’m always looking for that one chance and today I had that one chance, when you get it you must be ready.”

RMT - Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Myhill Hennessey

    Ivanovic/Shaw/Huth/Mings/Targett

    Silva/Fabregas/Walcott/Tadic/Hendo

    Rooney/Sakho/Wilson

    1.5 ITB

    My plan:

I plan to play a 3-5-2 for the first few weeks. Rotating both Defence and attack. Sakho and Wilson rotate well and Huth/Mings rotate well with the cheap option of targett in the backline of Soton whilst Bertrand is injured. I plan to go to Aguero from Rooney at GW4 to do this I will either go Silva -> 8.5 or Ivan -> Aspi injuries permitting. As for the goalkeepers I have gone for Myhill and Hennessey due to the idea that the latter will be moving to WBA and will give a very cheap option into a Pulis side that I don't expect to concede much. I don't plan to use my WC till later in the season, probably around GW9/10, obviously this is depending on how my team goes.

    Thanks in advance.

So what changes would you suggest - problem I have is don't think Hazard will start the season well. Aguero is out, sanchez is out. I was planning on captaining Wally, I know debatable however I have a gut feeling he is going to have an incredible season. Touching 200 is my estimation.

replace Aguero until he comes back GW4. Might want to downgrade Speroni if you plan on having Hart in goal all the time. I like the rest, although Kane will probably be a total flop (COYG!)

Thanks for the reply, i think i could replace speroni for someone cheaper and yeah ive seen a few people talking about putting ageuro in for GW4 so i think ill put rooney in and ive gone with Kane because tbh i cant see many great strikers, any suggestions instead? (COYG!) 😉

Herrera not guaranteed starter and Milner I'm not sure will be amongst the goals...I'd go Hendo and Tadic all day long over these....

Agree re GKs - downgrade Speroni or Hart

Kane - not sure he represents great value this season and Aguero won't start GW1.

Rooney to Aguero and then wally to whichever 6.5 bandwagon mid is in fashion at the time. Thats my plan anyway.

RMT - Any help would be fabulous

    Cech

    O'shea - Mings - Richards

    Ozil - Hazard - Cazorla - Depay

    Rooney - Costa - Deeney

    Subs: Rudd - 4.0 - Wanyama

OK I know the defence is awful I know but It just allows my Midfield to be so much tastier so thats why I did it. Is that a very bad idea?

My plan for GW4 is Rooney to Aguero and Whichever of the 8.5s is not doing as well as i would like to the bandwagon 6.0 mid at the time ( or else a wildcard, Hopefully not though ) .

Any thoughts at all would be greatly appreciated.

U might want to pick either rooney or depay, and invest the money on other player. Same thing with ozil and cazorla. Although with costa and hazard could be an exception. The idea is u might want to have some variety or flexibility in your squad. I dont like to put all of my eggs in the same basket. My sugestion would be adding a man city player and fix your defend.
      Good luck

What are the thoughts on Ogbonna? I was thinking Janmaat instead to rotate with Kaboul?
I've got Azpi and Bellerin in the back as well for a bit of context.

My first ever RMT post - any advice gratefully received:

    Cech, Henessey
    Azpilicueta, Koscielny, Cedric, Mings, Pudil
    Henderson,Walcott, Fabregas, Depay, Silva
    Pelle,Benteke, Ighalo

And looking to play 3-5-2 and playing the wildcard once the south american players (aguero, sanchez et al are back and playing)

Very similar midfield to me - also looking to play 3-5-2. Strike force looks a little weak and maybe too much invested in keepers? No Hazard either is a concern...?

      Good balance overall however...

      Agueroless
      Hazardless

      They instantly ring alarm bells

      Will Mert start?
Courtois won't get many save points so worth downgrading and saving 0.5 or even 1.0?
Will Kane be as strong this year and does he represent good value at 9m+?

    Hi guys,

After spending about 2 weeks toying with my team, I've finally decided to stop fiddling about and get some feedback from the experts on football scout. Would love your builds on the below

    BASE FORMATION - 3-5-2

    GOALKEEPERS - £8.5m - CHEAP AND CHEERFUL

    Butland | Rudd
Butland to start every gameweek. Will play every week, get plenty of save points and Stoke historically at least have not been bad defensively.

    DEFENCE - VALUE THE FLEXIBILITY

    Lescott | Moreno | Richards | Huth | Cedric
All teams have a decent run of gameweeks and I can deply 3 of these failry flexibly each week based on ease of fixtures. Lescott and Richards rotate well together. Moreno I'm not sure will start every week? Cedric is a gamble but if Southampton remain good defensively I think he'll come good at 0.5 cheaper than Fonte. Conscious I have no Chelsea representation as have splashed the cash on midfield...

    MIDFIELD - SPLASH THE CASH

Hazard | Depay | Ozil | Henderson | Yaya Toure
I just couldn't resist the lure of so many strong 8.5m midfielders + Hazard hence going with 3-5-2.
Hazard, for me, is the only essential aside from Aguero. Depay's pace has looked menacing in pre season and will rotate during the game with Rooney up front. Ozil I'm less sure about but Wenger loves him so he'll start and gets loads of assists - I contemplated Cazorla but think I'm relying on penalties a lot here. Yaya I think will come good again this season (providing City remember his birthday). Henderson is underpriced in my opinion for a certain starter, penalty taker and more license to go forward he's been given. I plan to downgrade one of the 8.5 mids with a 6m mid so I can upgrade to Aguero from GW2.

    FORWARDS - WAITING FOR AGUERO

    Rooney | Sakho | Berhanio

With all the new UTD firepower and RVP moving on I think Rooney will have a good season. However, I will look to replace him with Aguero from GW2 onwards by downgrading an 8.5 mid. Sakho I think delivers great value, especially with Payet providing a bunch of key passes/assists. I was choosing between Berahino and Cisse but went with the former due to guaranteed starts and easier run of fixtures.

Key question...Have I overspent on midfield and under on Defence/GK?

Look forward to hearing your thoughts!

    Right fellas,

After tinkering for many weeks now I have finally succumbed to the idea of dropping Rooney, freeing up 2.5m that I can use to strengthen GK, DEF and MID.

    here are my two options

    WITH Rooney

    mignolet
    cedric/clyne/richards
    depay/hazard/hendo/walcott/ozil
    pelle/rooney

    WITHOUT Rooney

    cech
    cedric/clyne/AZPI
    depay/hazard/hendo/walcott/STERLING
    pelle/LUKAKU

thoughts? is sterling/azpi/cech/lukaku really better than ozil/richards/mignolet/rooney?

RMT out of ten and give me feedback. I feel I just never can get it right.

    Fabianski (Schwarzer)
Azpi, Cedric, O’Shea (Alder, Ryan Bennet)
    Haz, Coutinho, Eriksen, KSY (Wanyama)
    Costa, Kane, Pelle

I think it may have too much money spent on the strikers. Fabianski’s opening fixture looks troubling. Midfield seems weak.

Eriksen was not great at the end of last season...Coutinho as well never seems to be give high points even though he is instrumental...Kane is too expensive...don't think he will be as good as lat season...may want to sub him n bring in a better mf

    Butland, Speroni/Ruddy
    Azpi, Williams, Huth, Francis, O'Shea
    Hazard, Cazorla, Henderson, Chadli, Fletcher
    Costa, Rooney, Sakho

    Thinking about:
    A. Costa, Henderson, O'Shea
    B. Benteke, Walcott, Cedric

Thinking I should go B but am I spending too much in defence? I'd like to spend that extra 0.5m in attack but can't think of a good way. Should be easy enough to get Kun either way. If I choose A will probably go Costa + Rooney to Kun + Benteke. Otherwise B, Walcott + Rooney to Kun and 6.5 mid
